It really wouldn't surprise me if the Pats did want DA.
He isn't their typical "system" type QB, but I bet Belichick would love his potential. I could see BB wanting to work on him as a backup, and quite frankly, NE needs a backup. DA is a good one.

Maybe a Benjamin Watson or Alex Smith for Bartel or Ratliff.
Makes sense. We are probably gonna cut one of our QB's. They are probably gonna cut one their TE's.
They need a QB that knows their system. We could use a TE, especially one that knows our system.
Seems like a fit to me.

I'd fully agree.
In terms of being a backup there are few in the league equal to Anderson.
Furthermore, when you look at the system the Pats use, they have no qualms about lining Brady back in the gun, letting him stand still and fire the ball down the field. To that end, Anderson is the prototype for that kind of process. Clearly he wouldn't have the same success, but damn, imagine how many bombs he could throw to Moss with that howitzer attached to his right shoulder
Besides, let's be honest here for a moment. Who in the NFL (besides Z ) doesn't know that Quinn is our QB? Bellyache isn't about to waste time thinking he'd get Quinn.
Lastly, they have a Super Bowl team, and when you have that, you don't suddenly go all cheap with your payroll. Forking over money for someone like Anderson wouldn't be that big of a deal, not for the type of insurance he can provide.

knowing how Bellyache likes to garner draft picks, I think we could fork one out of him for DA...but KoMan will probably keep him...

Don't trade with the patriots.
When's the last time they lost on a trade?
The 2nd-rounder they got for Cassell plus Vrabel? Possibly.
Besides that... you have to go REALLY far back.
I mean come one... they gave up a 4th for Moss.
We would get reamed on this trade.

The Patriots mostly just trade draft picks, so it's hard to say if any trade is good or bad.
But this one is probably one of the worst they've done. The Patriots traded a second round pick in the 2006 draft (52nd overall - WR Greg Jennings) and a third round pick in the 2006 draft (75th overall - C Jason Spitz) to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a second round pick in the 2006 draft (36th overall - WR Chad Jackson)
But for the most part you are right.
Don't forget, they also got Wes Welker for a 2nd round pick and 7th round pick.
I don't see any harm in us trading them a backup QB that we will probably cut though. Especially if we can get back a player who can actually play for us.
If they trade for a QB he will likely never play, unless Brady gets taken out again.

j/c... Why would we get rid of Anderson? Don't WE need a good quality backup just as much as NE?

No we need our starter to be the clear starter without looking over his shoulder, and to put the "controversy" to bed. However, I wouldn't give DA away, because a good backup QB is nice to have. So basically I would want a 2nd and might take a 3rd, but would probably walk away from anything less than a 3rd.

I understand wanting the B.S. to end...and I agree. But, if BQ were to get injured early, who would help us? Ratliff?

I agree, and that is part of the reason I said a 2nd or a 3rd round pick. To me I'm willing to take the chance BQ stays healthy for that price, but anything less we keep what we have. In an idea situation we would keep both, but considering the B.S I think it might be best if you got value for DA and move on from it all.

It would have to be a 2nd, as NE's 3rd round pick next year will likely be somewhere in the 80s.

hell no. ratliff is a stronger arm version of the ken dorsey show.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

www.CBSsportsline.comBrowns coach Eric Mangini was about as inciteful as his mentor, Bill Belichick, when asked about whether Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn will start in the team's opener. "I have nothing to add on that right now," Mangini said. He expects to reveal the starter in Cleveland at a press conference. September 4 12:38 ET Although Browns coach Eric Mangini didn't disclose who won the starting QB competition, he did say that the competition is now closed. It won't go on at practice next week. "The information I have based on what they've done at this point is what the decision will be based on," he said.

This drawn-out QB saga has reached the point of being truly lame. I'm no longer impatient about it, is just makes Mangini look ridiculous.

I don't mind that he doesn't reveal his starter, but atleast be up front about it. My only question is when did he make up his mind? He clearly has been intending to drag this on until the Vikings game from the getgo. He could have seen enough by the end of the first preseason game to know who he wanted as the starter.

Or maybe he'll reveal the starter on Monday? Or even today during a press conference to announce cuts (if they have one)? Either way I doubt the Vikings are too worried about it.

I think they are just trying to keep the Vikes guessing, which at this point is kind of lame. I did watch the vikes pregame/game last night and the viking announcers were talking briefly about the browns. They seemed to imply the browns were delaying the announcement to make the vikes prepare for both DA and Quinn. Another thing brought up was it was good for the vikes to play Dallas and the 3-4 as a tune up for the opener.
One thing that is scary about the vikes- their defense knows how to bring pressure. It is difficult to run on, and the secondary looks improved. The oline must be ready or it will not matter who is back there at QB.

I honestly think he's doing it to ... the media off. I think that the entire team knows who the starter is, but Mangini is sending a message to the media that we're in charge, not you.
I could be wrong though.

I think he's just doing this to be an ass, in general. If he really thinks keeping the starter a secret from Minnesota is going to give us some *huge* advantage, he's probably wrong.

I agree with that. DA and Quinn aren't that different you have to change your prep.
One may go deeper more often than the other, but those are simple game day adjustments. You aren't going to see the Minn. staff flailing their arms in the air in panic if they find out they prepped for the wrong guy.

It is an advantage.
Right now the coaches would be devising their defensive gameplan based on one QB. Because Mangini is being an "ass" they don't have the advantage of knowing which guy to focus on, so their efforts are being spread out, making their schemes less precise.
It is an advantage. It's just annoying.
My problem isn't with that aspect of it, but rather I feel it's more important to give Quinn as much time under center as he can get. This didn't do that.

Toad,
What if, and it's not likely at all, but WHAT IF he comes out with a two QB rotation..........????
If he likes the surprise so much, it's possible he'll do it every week.

Frankly, if this makes the Vikings spend 15 minutes concentrating on this and not on the important stuff, then it was worth it (so long as it doesn't hurt us, which, if we name the starter now, he's got this full week of practice).

Derek Anderson might be exactly what Coach Bellylaugh is looking for in New England. Remember back in '93 when Chuckles brought in a strong-armed, recognition-impaired QB to (ostensibly) back up Kosar? I would say that Vinny Testaverde and Derek Anderson are very comparable, with the exception of Vinny's athleticism and Derek's lack thereof. Belichek is the kind of coach who thinks he can rein in the talents of a flawed QB, while minimizing their deficits. All he has right now are an increasingly fragile Tom Brady and rookie Brian Hoyer. Add to that, Mangini's apparent high regard for Ratleff - as the backup - and you have the chemistry for a trade. The only question would be for what in return? Ben Watson wouldn't be enough. Ben Watson and a #3 might be.
The only other question is who's going to negotiate the trade since Mangini and Belichek will need U.N. diplomats to intervene before they even speak to each other.

Then Lerner has made a horrible decision and our season is doomed.
But there's about as much chance of that happening as 'Gini naming Ratliff the starter

Guys, there's an article floating around here somewhere ... Mangini has picked his QB and has informed the both of them who it is. The article implies he did not inform the rest of the team, just the two QBs. That QB will get the majority of reps this week in practice which I believe is mostly closed. Our No. 1 gets number 1 reps, and Minn still doesn't know who it is.
He's now made the decision. So we took a step in the right direction.
There's also a ton of rumors floating around out there that 3 or 4 teams have inquired about our QBs, and if you haven't noticed NE's QB situation is a total disaster. Don't be surprised to see one of these guys dealt soon.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

How could it???
New regime...New everything...OPEN Comp's...The way it shoulda been...
The decision is made or both woulda played Thursday...And the team KNOWS who it is and that QB is taking ALL THE REPS RIGHT NOW...
Just cause we don't know because Mango's not stating it publicly don't mean squat...
U bet your ass the team knows tho...Mangini ain't a fool regardless of what some think...
And BTW...
It's QUINN'S TEAM NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
Go Browns!!!

j/c mangini has said that he will tell the qbs who the starter is and whoever is the starter will get all the 1st team reps. this isn't hurting anyone but the vikings and the media. we as the fans can afford to wait. most fans waited until now for quinn to start, we can wait another week

J/C
Look back to 2006 when he was with the Jets....same QB-competition in the summer....same rhetoric.
I see nothing wrong with it and it's not like it will affect anything once the season starts.....
again,
2006 Pennington named starter just prior to week1, Jets go 10-6 2007 DA named starter at halftime of game1, Browns go 10-6 2008 Warner named starter after week4 preseason game, Cardinals go 9-7 and within 2 minutes of a superbowl win
