I thought that as well as someone had alluded to the fact that with increased H-Back usage, we have less need for a true Fullback... so Vickers should be all we really need. It's risky though... if Vickers gets hurt, then we'd have nobody at FB.

Jennings *should* be practice squad eligible, but I don't think that there is any way in hell that he clears waivers - I think that he just showed too much and somebody will snatch him up.

I am cautiously optimistic about James Davis.

He has definitely showed flashes of being pretty good. But I don't want to get myself too excited until I see him play in a real game.

Look at it this way-he will give us several good runs a game that we didnt have last yr-that could be the difference between a win or a loss!

I had never heard of Chris Jennings before we signed him so I decided to do a little research.

It's weird. I looked up his stats for the CFL. He was on the Montreal Alouettes. He was signed and released by the team in June 2008. Then re-signed with the the team on December 12th (his birthday.) Then released by them on the August 20th.

The team's web site has no recorded stats for him from last year. It says he got no carries or receptions.

He played two years at the University of Arizona, which makes me think he was a JUCO transfer. In those two years he rushed for a total of 607 yards on 158 carries (3.8 YPC) and 4 TD's. He also had 262 yards receiving, from 34 receptions and 1 TD.

Then after I looked a little harder, I found out he was a Junior College walk-on at Arizona.

Seems odd that this guy has somehow found his way onto an NFL roster, having never been a consistent starter, even if it was only for training camp. But he has obviously impressed some of us with how he played against the Bears.

Maybe if given a special teams spot he can impress the coaching staff enough to give him some carries he and there. After about him and finding out all of the above information about him, it's easy to see he is a hard worker.

I hope he makes the team.

well as a rb, you either have speed/elusivity or you don't. in that sense, that's good for him. whether he can adjust to the speed of his defenders (like the trouble reggie bush has) is another issue. that said, i'm really starting to wish we could just cut lewis and keep davis, harrison, and jennings. on offense, it always seems like it's the rb that takes the least amount of time to adjust to the nfl. in their purest, they either have the running ability or they don't. i don't see why we would keep lewis when he clearly doesn't have it anymore. sure he can rip a couple runs but not to the point where he can take pressure off our qb or make a defense genuinely worry.

As this point the only reason to keep Lewis around is for respect and leadership.

All the others players respect him. I think it would be hard on some of the players to see Lewis get cut. But it would also send a message, saying, "Anyone can get cut." And Mangini seems to be pretty big on sending messages.

I would worry that all of our young running backs wouldn't have anybody to look up and learn from if Lewis is gone. But then again, that's what coaching is for and our running backs coach Gary Brown also played in the NFL.

I would like to see us keep Lewis. But if it comes down to Lewis versus a player like Jennings or Harrison, you have to take the younger guy who has his best days in front of him. And also the versatility to contribute on special teams (Jennings.) And the ability to take one to the house on any play (Harrison.) Lewis no longer maintains either of those attributes.

Ok, I'm going to say this one last thing, and then I am done for good with this topic. James Davis has average speed for a running back. He isn't necessarily slow, but he is far from a burner. We will see him get caught from behind.

I think that is a fair assesment. I think average straight ahead speed would equal out to "good enough speed" as some of us have stated. I am more impressed with his vision and accleration to the hole which i think is the most important thing for a back anyways. I am looking forward to seeing him get run down from behind on a regular basis

I would rather see Harrison make this team then Jennings, or Herron. And I think that Mangini see's Harrison as Clevelands Leon Washington, so I believe he is pretty safe from cut-downs. I would be really surprised to see him cut.

Has there been any specification as to what type of injury JH has?

Guys miss football for 7/8 months... and all of a sudden want to throw a guy out the door for not playing PRESEASON!! I'm w/ u man... Harrison can do different things than both Lewis/ Davis/ AND anybody else...

The guy's vision is amazing.. he's very shifty.. and moves the chains..Small guy that can get yards.. much like Darren Sproles.. I won't say he's an LT b/c he is not.. but he is very much an asset to this team.

To all those who keep calling Harrison injury prone, can you tell me how many times he's been injured? I doubt it.

Last year he got very limited playing time, some weeks he wasn't even active. He got injured by being tackled into the bench (1st), he came out of the game but was playing the next week if I remember right. His second injury was a helmet to the back(ribs), near the end of the season. That was it. He didn't play because of RAC, not injuries.

This year he was doing well in camp, and on a run in the GB game it looked like a hamstring or something, and Mangini has sat him since.

His injuries last year didn't keep him from being able to play the next game, RAC did. This year, we don't know what the problem is, but Mangini still gives him high marks.

So the crap about him being injury prone is just that...crap.

Call me a "ghost" lover, I don't care, but IMO Harrison is just another example of RAC's incompetence. He has wasted a good part of this kids career.

On the broadcast of the Titans Game I believe they stated he was known for his special teams play.

I just thought I'd add this bit of spice to the Jerome Harrison love fest...

Jerome Harrison, Running back: Watching the 5' 9", 205-pound Harrison take a handoff is a bit like watching Laird Hamilton catch a monster wave. Just after the snap it's all frothing chaos, and you momentarily lose sight of him. Then suddenly he emerges -- you're not sure from where exactly -- smooth and under control and moving awfully quick. "He's supremely talented," left tackle Joe Thomas says of Harrison. "It's a shame he hasn't gotten on the field more to this point, because when he does get touches, it's magical."

Last season, his third with the Browns after they drafted him in the fifth round out of Washington State (where he was second in the nation in rushing as a senior, with 1,900 yards), Harrison averaged a robust 7.2 yards per carry and 9.7 yards per reception, but he was handed the ball only 34 times and had just 12 catches.

Now, though, he's got a new coach in Eric Mangini, who during his time with the Jets made productive use of a similar player, the 5' 8", 195-pound Leon Washington, and who will likely call upon Harrison frequently as a change of pace from bruising starter Jamal Lewis.

"He has a great chance to achieve what he wants to achieve, and what we want him to achieve," says Mangini in his typically inscrutable style. Translation: It's Harrison's time.

What happens to Harrison is going to be very interesting. Do they go with what was seen on tape, or what was seen live by Herron or the other guys. I hope they keep Harrison, but can easily see why he would be cut.

Davis has some speed according to the Combine results
http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers?tabIndex=0
He was mid pack for RBS but Cedric Peerman was the fastest at 4.45 for the 40 yard run. We now have a whole backfield of small fast RBs with Davis Harrison and Peerman...take your pick

James Davis isn't that small for a running back 5'11" 220. Or am I wrong?
