I guess we should start a thread for roster cuts... Here goes the first ones I've seen. Quote:
The New England Patriots got a headstart on trimming the roster in advance of Saturday's NFL deadline to get down to 53 players, cutting six players, including veteran quarerback Andrew Walter.
Walter was the biggest name out of the players released today as the team announced the transactions a few minutes ago.
The other players let go were veteran linebacker Vinny Ciurciu, wide receiver Robert Ortiz, safety Roderick Rogers, defensive lineman Stephen Williams and veteran offensive guard Billy Yates.
Ciurciu signed with New England as a free agent on May 4, 2009 as a veteran of six NFL seasons. Ciurciu has played in 84 NFL games and has registered 44 total tackles and 74 special teams tackles.
National Football Post
None of these guys really stick out. But there is always a chance we end up seeing one because of the ties between our coaching staff and the Patriots.
Also, Rod Hood was cut again...
Quote:
The Bears have informed veteran cornerback Rod Hood he will be released three days after the club signed him with durability concerns plaguing the defensive backfield.
This greatly increases the chances Trumaine McBride and D.J. Moore make the roster.
Check back for more soon.
Chicago Sun-Times
Hood has been cut three times, from three different teams in the last six months. I think we made the right call in cutting him.

Rod Hood getting cut again doesn't surprise me. For all the grief that we Terry Cousins and all our other horrible nickle DB's, Rod Hood was easily the worst.
you had a good run Hank.

The Cleveland Browns have waived CB Tra Battle, Scout.com has confirmed through a league source. Battle was signed by the Browns on August 24. The former University of Georgia defensive back was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2007 by the San Diego Chargers. web page

I've got two words for you: Corey Fuller. I have always wanted to re-sign him just so we can cut him.

Fuller wasnt that bad if we had him as a nickel or dime CB. He was horrible as a #1 corner though.

Chiefs chop eight, including McIntosh Posted by Mike Florio on September 4, 2009 4:33 PM ET The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the release of eight players, as they attempt to work toward 53 players by 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Gone are fullback Jed Collins, cornerback Travis Daniels, cornerback Londen Fryar, center Eric Ghiaciuc, tackle Damion McIntosh, linebacker Corey Smith, tackle Herb Taylor, and guard Tavares Washington. The biggest surprise is McIntosh, an eight-year starter who was due to make $2.2 million this year. He started 16 games last year at right tackle for the Chiefs, and he has been a regular starter at left and right tackle since 2001 for the Chargers and Dolphins, too. In all, McIntosh has starter 111 career games. Because he's a vested veteran, he instantly becomes a free agent, and he likely won't be out of work for long. web page

The Denver Broncos executed several roster cuts today, cutting journeyman quarterback Ingle Martin and offensive linemen Kory Lichtensteiger and Clint Oldenburg.
The AFC West franchise also cut defensive linemen Matthias Askew and Carlton Powell, defensive back Rashod Moulton, linebacker Lee Robinson, wide receiver Nate Swift and running back Marcus Thomas.
Offensive guard Mattt McChesney was placed on the reserve-injured list. He's a candidate for an injury settlement.

The St. Louis Rams cut former Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Renardo Foster today, according to a league source.
Foster, 24, is a 6-foot-7, 340-pound former All-Big East Conference lineman from Louisville
He started two games as a rookie with the Falcons in 2007 before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.
Foster held up against New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith as a rookie, not allowing any sacks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers cut several players today, including fullback Carey Davis and running back Isaac Redman, linebacker Bruce Davis, cornerback Anthony Madison, defensive tackle Scott Paxson and center A.Q. Shipley, a seventh-round pick from Penn State.
Davis started 11 games over the past two seasons. He was waived-injured, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The Steelers also cut seventh-round defensive end Sonny Harris.

It's kinda a red flag to me if he is getting cut this quickly.
Guys getting cut right now are the ones that had no chance at all to make the team, whether for injury or lack of performance... the tougher cuts will be tomorrow.

Cards cut down to 53 Posted by Mike Florio on September 4, 2009 5:46 PM ET The Arizona Cardinals have determined the 53 men with whom they'll start the season. Unless and until, that is, the Cardinals pick up some of the players who'll be cut by other teams in the next 24 hours. The team has announced that the following players have been released: linebacker Chase Bullock, guard Trevor Canfield, fullback Tim Castille, cornerback Jameel Dowling, defensive tackle Keilen Dykes, defensive end Alex Field, cornerback Wilfrey Fontenot, center Melvin Fowler, safety Aaron Francisco, receiver Ed Gant, linebacker Victor Hobson, linebacker David Holoway, receiver Onrea Jones, defensive tackle Rodney Leisle, fullback Regan Maui'a, guard Carlton Medder, quarterback Tyler Palko, tight end Leonard Pope, tackle Oliver Ross, receiver Steve Sanders, and running back Chris Vincent. Any of them with less than four years of service will be subjected to waivers. Any of them with four or more years of service will become unrestricted free agents. web page

i think that Fowler might have been injured last year. (a season long injury)

Bruce Davis is someone I really wanted the Browns to draft last year.. or whatever year he came out.. I'd like to pick him up as depth behind Hall and/or Wimbley...
He should be better than Leon Williams.. Hadn't really watched him in the pros, but he was a heck of a player at UCLA.
I see the Cards cut TE Leonard Pope of UGA... man.. He was suppose to be that work... Dude is like 6'7.

I agree. When a corner loses it, it is over. Either you can run or you can't. Very few have had a slow demise. It usually happens overnight.

well what's frustrating about him isn't that he's lost a step because of age. he's only, what, 27 or 28? this should be him in his prime. it seems like his mental ability (or maybe it's an attitude issue) that hasn't improved to make that next leap. he clearly has ability as he was a starter last year so it's more shocking that he went from starter to out of a job instead of the guys we've had before who were in the nickle for years and then came here. i honestly thought this guy could be a nickle guy for us but apparently he can't do it. again, i just wish we figured this out sooner so we could've kept carey.

Big fat BS...while our TE unit sucks, Pope is no upgrade....he has underachieved every snap in this league, Id rather have Heiden than Pope, he's a better blocker and at least consistent receiving the ball...we have our own Pope in Rucker...no thanks
McIntosh otoh would be worth a look...he sucks as a starter but so does StClair...and at least he would be an upgrade over Sowells...you aint going to get any decent OT, that's as good as it gets
We should also consider to trade for Pollard who is apparently on the block:
The Kansas City Chiefs are exploring options to trade strong safety Bernard Pollard, a move that would create an opening for veteran Mike Brown to move into the starting lineup, sources said.
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Biggs-Chiefs-exploring-trade-options-with-Pollard.html
Mike Brown huh? The guy I wanted in FA and we were unable to bring in after a visit

That name really popped out there. Another one I was interested in was Victor Hobson. Wasn't he at one point a starting linebacker? Any potential value in him?

They put him on IR, after doing the unthinkable...conducting TC with 79men for 2 weeks He's theirs...the penguin blew it, simple as that...he outsmarted himself...just like when he drafted Gholston so Belly couldnt get him

I agree. And although I had high hopes for Carey, if that's the worst mistake Mangini will make this year, then we roll with it. Now if he doesn't start Quinn or even trades him, then all bets are off with this guy. So far - and granted it's early - I think he's done more good than bad, but there is still time for him to really screw up. I just hope it's nothing major.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

He already screwed up in April...the offseason was a joke....looks like all 4 top picks aren't real upgrades to start the season even though at positions of major need, esp. the 2nd round looks like a big fat FAIL job....Veikune is horrible out there, Robo managed to be even worse than Massa which is saying a lot

Have we even played one regular season game yet? You are the type of Browns fan - negative, negative, negative - that I can't stand to be around.
Anyone that evaluates a draft after 4 preseason games either doesn't know much about football or has too many other personal things going wrong in their lives that they take it out via their football team.

You do realize that it is the end of their very first preseason in the NFL, right?
I think anyone in their right mind couldn't call a draft a "big fat fail job" before the season even starts. Actually, you should probably wait till around this time next season.
