Cleveland Browns by Tony Grossi/The Plain Dealer Saturday September 05, 2009, 6:12 PM CLEVELAND -- Running backs Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison were not among the 23 cuts made by the Browns today.
The biggest names were receiver David Patten, cornerback Corey Ivy, linebacker Beau Bell and fullback Charles Ali.
The rest of the moves included those whose contracts were terminated:
Safety Hamza Abdullah, running back Noah Herron and tight end Aaron Walker.
Also waived were:
Defensive back Brandon Anderson, quarterback Richard Bartel, defensive back Tra Battle, offensive lineman Branndon Braxton, linebacker Titus Brown, offensive lineman Dustin Fry, defensive lineman Adam Hoppel, receiver Paul Hubbard, running back Chris Jennings, receiver Lance Leggett, offensive lineman Pat Murray, receiver Jordan Norwood, offensive lineman Kurt Quarterman, defensive end Brian Schaefering, guard Isaac Sowells and defensive end Santonio Thomas.
Lewis and/or Harrison were rumored to be on the roster bubbled, but each survived -- at least for now.
There could be other moves in the coming days as the Browns scour the list of cuts league-wide. In fact, the Browns' moves leave them at 52 players -- one below the NFL limit.

don't see how people thought harrison was really going to be released. i think releasing lewis was a 50/50 thing. i'd rather have released him but i understand why we didn't. Quote:
The plan was for quarterback Jeff Garcia to push starter JaMarcus Russell, the first pick in the 2007 draft, to get better.

Plan C, as it turns out, was for Garcia to not make the team.
Per a league source, Garcia has been cut.
He had a decent showing in the third preseason game against the Saints, generating a triple-digit passer rating.

trade DA now and get garcia as a backup.

Sowells is a moderate surprise.

No Sowells shouldn't be a surprse..he's been slated as a backup since he was drafted and the Browns each year brought in people who played his position(s)...that should tell you he was a waste..

The only guys I'm surprised about are;
Charles Ali and Chris Jennings.. I thought either Herron or Jennings would make it and I was betting on Jennings.. Guess I was wrong..

David Patten among Browns cuts Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2009 6:32 PM ET The Cleveland Browns have announced their roster moves aimed at getting the team to 53 players.
The biggest name on the list is receiver David Patten, a veteran of the trio of New England Super Bowl wins earlier this decade.
Also gone are fullback Charles Ali, defensive back Brandon Anderson, quarterback Richard Bartel, defensive back, Tra Battle, linebacker Beau Bell, offensive lineman Branndon Braxton, linebacker Titus Brown, offensive lineman Dustin Fry, defensive lineman Adam Hoppel, receiver Paul Hubbard, running back Chris Jennings, receiver Lance Leggett, offensive lineman Pat Murray, receiver Jordan Norwood, offensive lineman Kurt Quarterman, defensive lineman Brian Schaefering, offensive lineman Isaac Sowells, defensive lineman Santonio Thomas, defensive back Hamza Abdullah, running back Noah Herron, defensive back Corey Ivy, and tight end Aaron Walker.
Finally, the Browns announced that an injury settlement has been reached with defensive lineman Melila Purcell, who already had been on the team's injured reserve list.

Here is our roster now (fluid as it will be this won't last):
3 QB D.A., Quinn, Ratliff (Don't read into it the order I listed, I did the QB's alphabetically) 3 RB Lewis, Davis, Harrison 1 FB Vickers 3 TE Royal, Heiden, Rucker 5 WR Edwards, Cribbs, Furrey, Massaquoi , Robiskie 8 OL Thomas, Steinback, Mack, Fraley, Womack, St.Clair, Hadnot, Hilliard, 1 K Dawson 1 LS Pontbriand 1 P Zastudil 6 DL Rogers, Williams, R.Smith, Coleman, Rubin, Mosley 10 LB DQ Jackson, Wimbley, Hall, Bowens, Barton, Veikune, Maiva, Costanzo, L.Williams, Bernard 5 CB Wright, McDonald, Poteat, Francies, Lawson 5 S Elam, Pool, Adams, Sorenson, Lockett 52 These are the cuts: Ali and Titus Brown are moderate surprises. Although Titus couldn't stay healthy so I suspect that cost him. QB Bartel RB Herron, Jennings FB Ali TE Walker WR Patten, Hubbard, Leggett, Norwood OL Braxton, Fry, Murray, Quarterman, Sowells K LS P DL Hoppel, Schaefering, S.Thomas LB Bell, Titus Brown CB B.Anderson, Ivy S Abdullah

From the main site:
"The Browns made 23 roster moves Saturday, trimming their roster to 52 players, one below the NFL limit of 53. "
Why cut to 52.........hmmm.........that's interesting. Thoughts anyone?

I can't believe they let Bartel go and kept Ratliff. I know a couple of preseason games are not a lot to go on, but I thought Bartel absolutely wiped the floor with Ratliff. Ratliff looked like a shaky, scared, INT machine. Bartel's numbers and confidence seemed to be 10 times that of Ratty's. Well, I guess when you're Mangini's boy, it can pay off.
And yeah, I know we're talking 3rd QB here, but hey- you never know. We *did* go through 4 last year...

I'm thinking Jennings to PS if he clears waivers?

Are you friggin nuts? No way Garcia retreads here.
I am also unhappy about keeping Ratliff. Bartel DID look pretty sharp Thursday. I understand it was the xx team D but still.....I hope it don't come back to bite us.

I'm thinking we pick up an OL from the other cuts. We only have 8, typically teams carry nine.
I could see Lockett being let go, or even Lawson if a DB gets our attention from the other cut lists.
I can also see Ali returning after clearing waivers, etc. Two FB's would be a good idea as well, imo. I think we 'stashed' a player or two to avoid losing them initially and will fill out the roster over the next 48/72 hours.

I assume Little was meant to be Adams?
Not a whole lot of surprises. A little surprised by Lockett, Bernard, and Hilliard, but everything else is pretty much how I expected. I'd say we're looking for OT depth with that extra roster spot, or less likely, a safety.

If you are asking about Earl Little, he has been out for a while. His last year in the league was 2005.

I watched some NFL Network today and Sowells looked awful against the Bears just very very slow at RT... 3, 4 years into your career, 3rd string OL... you're done.
None of these cuts were a surprise, except maybe Jennings and that's even a stretch.

According to my count, only 8 OLs are on the team and 1 is Hadnot. You can almost wager $$$ that the 53rd man will become an OL.

I am rather surprised by the combination of 3 RB, 3 TE, 1 FB.
I would have expected another TE or RB in place of the FB (Ali) who was cut. I like Ali .... but don;t expect him back. I think that Mangini really likes having a FB and also using the H-Back in his offense as well.
If anything, I suspect we'll be loking for another TE/H-Back type. Those guys are usually pretty good special teams types as well.

Until the PS is filled out,it will be difficult to determine who/what is needed. Case in point,to properly practice, a team needs access to 10 o-linemen(5 on O 5 on scout team) and 8 d-linemen(3+1 for rotation on D and 3-4 on the scout team). Those are bare minimum numbers. As of now we are short in both categories.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Approaching it purely from a special teams perspective, it says a lot that Bell was cut over Costanzo. If Mangini thought Bell had any upside at all, you know he would have kept him over Costanzo.
Can you see Lawson picking up KR or PR duties to get Cribbs more involved in the offense? I think he won a job on the roster with that last preseason game (which I am ashamed to admit I actually watched).

I am surprised that Ivy was cut...and that Poteat and L Williams were not cut. Although I am indifferent to all of that.
Who is Hilliard on the OL?
I like Mangini, but cutting to 52 is a little squirell-y if you ask me.
When can they start announcing PS guys?

That's a good point. Not to mention if one of the OL/DL needs to be held out,

A possible OL pickup.
Tony Pashos-T- Jaguars Sep. 5 - 7:32 pm et Jaguars released OL Tony Pashos. Pashos' move from right tackle to guard was a bad sign, and the Jags weren't going to pay him over $4 million in salary to be a backup. He's immediately the top offensive lineman available, though, and should be signed quickly. Browns GM George Kokonis was a big fan of Pashos in Baltimore. web page

Bernard Pollard has been cut, along with a few other Chiefs... Quote:
The Kansas City Chiefs released 13 players, including big names like veteran linebacker Zach Thomas, wide receiver Ashley Lelie and safety Bernard Pollard.
Thomas' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, had denied a published report earlier this week that Thomas would retire. However, Thomas did wind up being cut.
The team placed offensive guard Colin Brown on the reserve-injured list to get down to the NFL roster limit of 53 players.
National Football Post's Brad Biggs reported that Pollard was being actively shopped in trade discussions today prior to being cut. Pollard was deemed expendable because coach Todd Haley wanted to move veteran Mike Brown into the starting lineup at safety after signing the injury-prone former Chicago Bears standout in June.
The Chiefs announced that they have cut: CB Jackie Bates, TE Tom Crabtree, DE Dion Gales, DE Bobby Greenwood, G Darryl Harris, WR Taurus Johnson, WR Ashley Lelie, DT Derek Lokey, S Bernard Pollard, S Ricky Price, LB Zach Thomas, RB Javarris Williams and WR Rodney Wright.

He was projected as a 2nd round pick as late as draft day, but then fell to the 5th or 6th. I wouldn't mind us picking up Pashos either.
