Wow!
I can't say that it is dumb on NE part. get another 1st and replace him next year Oakland on the other hand prob just gave up a 10-15 pick for a guy who is 30 in 2 months
EDIT: I just saw that it was a 2011 1st rd pick.

No joke. Seymour is a great player, but he has problems staying on the field, is almost 30, and is in his contract year. The only thing they got out of it was a 2011 first instead of this year's.

WOW.....Why does a 2-14 team need a guy that might get them one, maybe two more wins?
If Patriots are willing to get rid of him, then I think it is more then just money....his play is slipping too. Belichick is good...really good
Top 10 pick...maybe even top 3 when you consider who Oakland's QB/Coach/Owner is....
I'm coming home, I'm coming home, tell the world I'm coming home

It's like the strong guy preying on the weak one. For as good as Bellichek is, Davis is equally as bad.
Maybe the NFL should step in and relieve Davis of his duties. This is borderline ridiculous, it really is. Wow, just wow. And how long did they get him inked for? Hopefully several years ...
How do they continue to have fans?
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Top Ten ?? Probably Top Five,...the way Oakland plays. GREAT move on Belichick's part,...he's constantly rebuilding for the future while maintaining solid current level play. Hard to beat.

OMG!!! What the FREAK!!!?? first round pick????
Seymour is over the hill and I'm a GEORGIA fan.. lol.. Well he can still contribute.. and is a force.. but he's getting older.. can't stay on the field..
How do the patriots do this?? They are about to kill in next years draft... and I think college prospects are going to work a little harder to try to get on this DYNASTY!!
NExt in line... Tom Brady... Yea I said it..
The Patriots have shown that no person is above the team... Plus he is wanting a new contract.. Not so sure he gets it..

In Seymour's defense, he did have 11 sacks as a 3-4 end last year. But he is aging, often hurt, and his play is bound to start declining.
Oakland does/did need a defensive tackle, but considering the state of their team, this trade was straight up stupid. He is no where near good enough to make them a playoff team, and odds are he'll be gone after this season.

Moves like this make me wonder how many ridiculous offers belichek makes to al Davis... "let's see if he goes for this!"
It's like a game. 4th for randy moss. Seymour for a 1st. Think he tried to get a 3rd for o'connell before cutting him? Has he offered maroney for a 2nd and a 4th? Maybe a 2nd and a third for asomughua? Davis is like the guy you hate to have in your fantasy league because of all the stupid decisions and belicheck is like the jerk that keeps taking advantage of him.
Davis didn't trade this year's first because he wants Taylor mays. He's even more of a Davis guy than DHB.

LOL You gotta love Belichick.. think about it. They use a 1st round pick to take Seymour.. Keep him for the best years of his career.. And when he gets older and on the downside of his years in the league,, they trade him for a 1st round pick in next years draft..
Not only that, but they trade him to a team that was so bad last year, that even if Oakland improves by double, The Pats are still going to get a pick in the top 5 or 6.
All I can say is WOW......

Im surprised at the reactions on here. Id have given our first round pick for Seymour in a heartbeat. He isnt a corner, or RB. A lineman can play till he is 35 easily. And he is one of the premiere ends for a 3-4 in the league.

Washington played till he was 40 and he was 400 pounds. A lineman losing a step with age isnt the same as a RB or CB losing a step. IMO lineman who are otherwise healthy dont really start to decline till their 35 and up. He would instantly be the best thing weve ever seen at end here. Probably for a good 5 years. To me thats worth a 1st. .

I just looked up Reggie White and Bruce Smith - RW was born in '61 and Bruce Smith was born in '63. - RW was at his best from 90-98. Making him well over 30 in his prime. While Bruce Smith was at his best from 90-96. - Again in his 30's during his prime.
I'd say you have a point.

I really and truly believe that Al Davis should relinquish all decision-making authority to someone who isn't hearing imaginary voices and watching pretty butterflies flitter from tree to tree.
It's a sad fact of life that we all reach a certain point in our lives where we become doddering, mind-muddled old people who aren't capable of building a ham-and-cheese sandwich, let alone making decisions for a multi-million dollar organization.
And we Browns fans think we have it bad......

Contracts are irrelevant to me. You have to pay to play. And with the salary cap as high as it is now, its not very often player salaries are an issue the way they were in the past.

Except for the fact that:
A)He may not want to stay in Oakland B)Instead of getting better, he's going to decline C)You're going to have to pay him a bunch of money for someone who will become useless after 32.
From a strictly football standpoint, it's a average trade for the Raiders. Combine that for the fact that the Raiders may not even have him next year, the fact that they will not make the playoffs, or that Richard Seymour is not worth a first rounder in the first place, it's a horrifically terrible trade.
you had a good run Hank.

All good points, but tender with at 'what slot' is that first rounder,...?? To me, there's a difference. BB knew what he was doing here,...big time.

it may end up a good trade for oakland... if seymour winds up giving them good seasons all the way until he retires in his mid to late 30s.
odds are in this particular situation though, oakland got fleeced

The first rounder in 2011 was even a good idea! Next year will be uncapped... Think the Pats will spend any money in the FA next year?..... By 2011 a new deal will be in place and guess who picks (most likely) in the top 10? I can't stand BB but the Pats fans are damn lucky to have him.

The Raiders went to the Super Bowl in 2002. The most we've had since our return is a wild card game. I'm not sure how much we can ridicule Oakland.

This is a good point and I'm glad someone brought it up. I think Oakland's 2011 first rounder is worth *MORE* than their 2010 first rounder. Like you said, there will be a new CBA in 2011 and it's very likely that there will be some sort of rookie pay scale or something to that effect, where the contracts paid to players at the top of round 1 are reasonable and it's actually an advantage to pick there.
Two years from now we can all laugh when Seymour has a huge contract that he may or may not be living up to, but New England will be getting a stud in the top 10 of the draft at a manageable contract. Maybe they'll replace Matt Light who will be 33 when the 2011 season starts. Or Moss who will be 34. Or imagine how nasty that offense would be with an AP type back. Who knows.
This is a great trade for the Patriots, and you can probably guess how highly I think of it for the Raiders.

Seymour hasn’t reported to Raiders following trade By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer Sep 7, 9:54 pm EDT Can't say I blame Seymour, I wouldn't report either. Buzz up! 74 PrintALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—Five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour(notes) did not report to the Oakland Raiders on Monday, a day after being acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots. Raiders coach Tom Cable said after practice that Seymour had to resolve some things with the Patriots before the deal for a first-round pick in 2011 could be finalized. “We have attempted to make a deal,” Cable said Monday. “There are some issues still between him and the Patriots that are being worked out. I’m hoping that that will get resolved as quickly as possible. We know that the player wants to be here, but we have really no control over those issues.” Patriots spokesman Stacey James said he was unaware of any difficulties surrounding the trade, which was announced by New England on Sunday and confirmed by Cable. ADVERTISEMENT The trade was included on the league’s official transaction list distributed to teams Sunday, a person who has seen the list told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the list is not public. All deals are subject to certain conditions, including physicals for players involved, and teams can inform the league if those conditions are not met. Neither the Raiders nor Patriots asked for the trade to be rescinded by the close of business Monday, the person said. Cable did not want to address the issue further Monday, but said Seymour told him he wants to be in Oakland. Cable did not say when Seymour would have to arrive in order to be able to play in the season opener next Monday night against San Diego. “Just as soon as possible. That’s really the only way to answer that right now,” he said. Seymour, who turns 30 next month, is in the final year of a contract that pays him about $3.7 million this season. The deal would send him from a team that has gone 77-19 the past six seasons and is a perennial Super Bowl contender to one that is an NFL-worst 24-72 over that span. Seymour has been a stalwart in New England since being drafted sixth overall in 2001. He played on three Super Bowl winners with the Patriots, recording 39 career sacks and being selected to the Pro Bowl for five straight seasons beginning in 2002. The Raiders were looking to upgrade a run defense that was the worst in the league during the exhibition season and has been the worst over the past six seasons. Since going to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, Oakland has had the worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 141.7 yards per game on the ground and 122 touchdowns rushing. The Raiders have allowed a 100-yard rusher in more than half of their games the past three years. AP Sports Writer Jimmy Golen in Boston contributed to this report. web page

Ironic that now Seymour, Gerard Warren and Warren Sapp have played with the raiders. Seymour was the pick the Browns scouts wanted at #3 in 2001 but Butch overruled them and took Warren, who idolized Warren Sapp but was only 1/3 as good.
It's the three-degrees of Raiderdom.

Al Davis just keeps reaching new levels of stupidity.
I can't really blame Seymour at all if he doesn't show up. But if he doesn't show up in Oakland. What do you do with the draft pick? Does it go back to Oakland? Or is it just tough luck, NE keeps it?
