After the report that Mangini has named his QB, but will not reveal his choice for advantage points...

who do you think will be named starter and who do you think should be starter?

Let's face it, seems like a lot of people believe there are politics being played into the decision.

Will be - Quinn
Should be - Quinn

IMO, Quinn gives us a better chance to win right now. He manages the game much better than Anderson and while he may not put points on the board as fast as Anderson can with the long ball, he can wear a defense out and think on his feet much better as the pocket closes around him.

The reason I am not an Anderson fan is because of his decision making. People talk about how he was the victim of the drops last season. However, in 2007 he was awarded by spectacular catches by Winslow and Edwards on throws many wouldn't have made. I also think you have to figure in the surprise factor as well in terms of the opposing defenses. Anderson surprised everyone when he did what he did in 2007. The following season, he was no longer a surprise. Teams adjusted to Anderson. They took away the deep pass and forced him to throw short. He stared down his receivers and looked scared when the pocket began to close. He seemed unable to think on his feet.

I am not saying Quinn is the savior and if both are a flop this year, I truly believe we will be picking top 5 again in next years draft. It would be a hard thing to do, but with Bradford, McCoy, and others being on the board it would be hard to pass one of them up

Here's to hoping for a successful season! .500 and I am a happy.

Why start a new QB thread? Everything has been pretty peaceful around here.

Any, you are wrong, Mangini has not named his starter, publicly or privately.

Quote:

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns coach Eric Mangini has decided on his starting quarterback, and he's keeping it a secret as long as he can.

Mangini declined to name his starter for Sunday's season opener against Minnesota. Before practice Monday, he said he has not yet told Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson who won the job.

Mangini says he will not publicly announce his starter because as a former defensive coordinator he feels it gives his team a competitive advantage against the Vikings and future opponents.

He says it's more difficult to prepare for two players than it is to prepare for one.

Quinn and Anderson have been competing for the starting position for months, a close competition that carried through training camp and four exhibition games.

I know he says he hasn't informed BQ or DA who the starter is. But, I'm willing to bet that's a lie and the whole team knows.

OK I worded it wrong.... I knew he had not told Quinn or Anderson (at least thats what he says). Either way, his decision is made and that is clear.

I personally also believe everyone on the team currently knows who their QB is.

Waiting through preseason was fine with me.....but not naming the starting QB now just comes off as an amateur move by the coach. The Jets named their rookie the starting QB after one shaky preseason game...granted, we have a different situation but he made the call and rallied the team around the guy. We look even worse than our TD-less streak right now. Pathetic.

And like Minnesota, a waaaaaayyy better team than us, is going to be shaking in their boots not being able to gameplan against a certain QB. Put your best our there and make them beat you.....not this way. I've been fine with everything the new regime has done...up to this. Come on already, you look foolish.

Just another 1 of his oh so "clever" outsmart moves...I thought he at least told his team who the QB is....but this is ridiculous....he wants to outsmart the opponent and all he does is weaken his own team...yet again....boy, what a moron...so much for the homers saying he learned from his NY experience

Team has got to prepare for MIN and doesn't even know which kind of QB to protect, who will throw em the ball etc....just dumb...and so childish to then go out and say he has made a decision but won't tell anyone....not even his team

so, instead of preparing for MIN the players and probably even some coaches (hey, acting like this, he HAS TO BE 100% paranoid) are more occupied in an internal guessing game than focusing on the opponent...you're soooo smart Eric

I don't mind Mangini not telling the media, but to not tell the quarterbacks by now is ridiculous.

Do you really believe the team doesn't know who the starter is?

He said last week that he had made a decision, and that that QB would get the reps with the 1's in practice this week.

Just because he says he hasn't told the team, doesn't mean he hasn't.

It's gonne be Quinn and it should be Quinn.

- Quinn reminds me of Tom Brady. - Has the right equipment upstairs to run a ball control offense. - Short, precise, and consistent passes that get your offense down the field and that also set up a long ball every now and then.

Guys the whole team knows who the QB is... BQ knows he is going to be the starter and DA knows he is going to be on the bench. They just want to keep Minnesota guessing. Mangini is just blowing smoke at this point.

Pretty sure the poster above you said 'Quinn reminds me of Tom Brady'. He did not say he is Tom Brady. And honestly there are similarities. Get over it.

After seeing three posts by you, I can already tell you hate Quinn. As far as we know, he is Tom Brady. Just three short years ago, he was being touted by many as the best QB prospect since Peyton Manning. Only good play by DA in '07 kept him from starting last year.

When it comes to Brown coaches.

Chris Palmer - I thought we be ok
Butch Davis - Was never a fan
Terry Robiskie - I like a lot..but not as a HC
Romeo Crennel - I like RAC, feel he is good HC, but obviously time to move on
Eric Mangini - Not a fan...and I think he is a more NFL ready Butch Davis.

I was not a fan of Mangini in NYJ.....and he has looked worse to me in Cleveland.

He may be a great HC by the time its all done...and honestly...I hope he does....I think the NFL is a better place with a strong Cleveland Browns team in it...but to date..to me....Mangini has looked like 1 good step....2 bad steps.

I don't hate him. My problem with him is that he has had multiple opportunties to take the job while he has been here and he hasn't done anything with it. Tell me why should I be optimistic about him.

Hack, I'm not sure why you say this. I have loved everything Mangini has done. I like his discipline and no nonsense attitude. I just think he comes off a little rough to fans and media, but so does Bill Belichick.

Although I like discussing this topic because it's the most important for our team at the present, it shouldn't really even be a debate. This whole competition was about Brady Quinn showing he's ready, and as long as there was no total collapse then it was Brady's job to lose. And why not? We've seen Derek Anderson for 30+ games and he was a practice squad 6th round release guy. Brady Quinn had a lot of investment put into him and he could be the second coming of Bernie Kosar, no one really knows because he's played less then 2 full games without injury.

I'm told by someone with the Browns that while Mangini has been tight lipped that everyone in the organization who hasn't been told anything thinks it will be Brady Quinn under center all year.

I also believe 100% without any shadow of doubt it should be Brady this year and next year. It takes time to develop a quality passer in this league. He should be given at least that amount of time and I think due to Randy Lerner that he will be given that time. It was Randy Lerner who imposed on Crennel and Savage to start Quinn last year. He thinks Quinn is an excellent face of the franchise.

So we'll see soon enough. I think the time has passed of when Mangini should have named the starter. Now he's opening us up for more negative criticism and to be the laughing stock of the league. The only way this decision isn't gonna be second guessed is if we come out and win early on to shut up the media and talking heads. Otherwise, it will be the same old Cleveland Browns joke franchise.

He hasn't had a single opportunity until now. His rookie year, his holdout kept him from having a chance. Blame this on him or not, he didn't have an opportunity. Last year, there was no competition and DA was named the starter. Then in mid season, he was named the starter after DA sucking. And this year he was in a battle for the job, and may have won.

You should be optimistic because he was a great college quarterback and elite prospect who has shown us nothing bad. If you didn't like him as a prospect in the draft, you probably won't like him now. If you did like him as a prospect, there is no reason to like him any less now.

One more thing is Mangini walks around like he's got the credentials of Bill Belichick. Carrying around a pretty big stick. This guy has done NOTHING in this league and honestly is opening himself up for a lot of criticism if things don't go well. I hope he sees big potential in this team to surprise.

I think it's just smoke and mirrors. I think the team DOES know who the starting QB is. It's just that this team needs every advantage it can get vs minnesota.

Heck Mangini could really screw with them by starting Josh Cribbs on the first play

Exactly, and that is why BQ will most likely be the starter. He is a media darling.

Ok, I guess my biggest problem with the whole thing is that I am worried about Quinn getting the nod just because he is Brady Quinn and not based on what he has shown on the field. I am worried that if he couldn't beat Anderson out convincingly, is he really that much better, or is he even better at all? I just think that with the talent we have on offense right now, that is better suited for a quarterback who can stretch the field and help out our running game. I think that DA is going to give them the best chance to win games now. I don't know, I just want a winner.

Probably the fact that Derek Anderson has been garbage since his 6 game hot streak is also a large factor, too.

Maybe so. The backup QB usually is to the media. Its also compounded by the fact he's said all the right things, been a quality teammate, and works his butt off. Americans and fans of the NFL can relate a lot with a guy like that.

Derek Anderson on the other hand has been a flippant and aloof figure a lot of the time. He's a pouter. He's not a great teammate. He struggles to get through interviews. He's from Oregon State. You get the picture. There's no comparison from a marketing standpoint who'd be better for this franchise to develop into a great player.

I disagree...BQ will be the starter because he is the better QB.

He is exactly the kind of QB that EM has said all along that he wants.

As stated earlier, BQ did nothing to dispel those facts/beliefs/notions.

I think it is silly that EM is waiting to make the "announcement". But I also think many people are getting their boxers in a bunch over nothing.

The players know the score.

Brady outplayed Anderson this preseason. There's no question about it. Last year is debateable I suppose, but Anderson certainly didn't outshine him. In 2007, Anderson almost got cut while Quinn was the best QB in camp as far as statistics went. That's nothing more then scuttlebutt; and if there's nothing more then that for why Brady shouldn't be the QB then it should be his job to lose. He certainly didn't hurt his case.

This whole competition was stupid to begin with. What it ultimately comes down to is the kind of offense that Mangini wants to run, and what he feels best plays to the strengths of the offense. I think with receivers like Braylon, and Mass on the outside who are deep threats and Furrey in the slot, a vertical passing offense suits those players better. Hence, I think DA is the better fit and should start. This should have been settled 3 weeks ago. Honestly here, did we see anything new in the preseason that we didn't already know about either quarterback? This whole thing hurts whoever the starting quarterback is going to be, and the entire offense because they cant build any chemistry. It is annoying.

While I agree the competition probably makes each QB a little more fragile truth be told, rather then strengthen either; the book on Derek Anderson is the same while the jury on Brady Quinn as a pro is very much still open.

Derek Anderson will never be consistent enough to:
A) take a team to the playoffs over a 16 game season
B) Beat top tier quality opponents (possibly needed to win games on the road)
C) win a Super Bowl or even get there.

Who ever said Mangini wants a stretch passing game?

Everything I've seen from his playcalling has been from 0-30 instead of 0-50. Besides, Quinn has a much better deep ball than Anderson does on the ten yard pass.

I don't understand how you can say that. He is only 26 years old. Pro Bowl season first year starting, and last season was doomed from start when he suffered a concussion and didn't practice until the Tuesday before the Dallas game. He was rusty his first few games, and then got it going. If I remember correctly he had about 100 pass attempts without an INT. If it weren't for Braylon dropping that bomb against Baltimore, he never would have been benched to begin with. Last year was a wash for both quarterbacks. Last season was bad all around. He has just as much room to grow as Brady.

For all the knock on Quinn's arm strength, he's got plenty of zip on the slants and the outs I've seen him throw, which is utilized more often in the pro game then flat out bombs. I've seen him play enough through the years to know he has enough arm to make defenses pay when something downfield is there.... he's going to be waiting in the weeds and catch some teams by surprise who stack 8 in the box. No one, I didn't say that. I said that our offense is better suited for that type of passing game. Not only because of our receivers, but because it will benefit our mediocre running game. I don't know what type of offense he wants to run. That was my whole point. It is up to Mangini what type of offense he wants to have.

This is why I don't post on here very often anymore. Too many posters sound like the townspeople from Hoosiers.

Starter has been named, the team knows, and the QB's know. Heaven forbid the media doesn't, and Mangini keeps them and the Vikes guessing the whole week.

Well, let's break this down a little.. Who doesn't NEED to know who the Starter will be?

Hmm, let me think...

The Media doesn't need to know
The fans (that's you and me) don't need know

Now, let's list those that need to know...

The candidates need to know for sure.

The offensive coordinator needs to know

Every offensive coach needs to know

And his offensive teammates need to know for sure, and out of courtesy, the entire team really.

That leaves only one question... When is the last possible moment they need to know whos starting?

My understanding is that they begin preparing for the Vikings on Wednesday., if that's correct, then that's the day that those that NEED to know should know.

Those that don't need to know,, hell, we can wait until game time and it makes little to no difference.

unless you just hate mangini and want any reason to call him stupid. Like some folks.....

Oh,, by the way, I think Quinn will get the nod.. But I don't care either way... May the best man win..
