BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers returned to practice Monday, increasing the chances he'll play in the season opener against Minnesota.
Rogers did not play in the exhibition season with an unspecified injury. For the past three weeks, he rode the stationary bike while his teammates practiced. The 6-foot-4, 350-pounder had 83 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 16 games last season, his first with Cleveland.
Rogers participated in position and individual drills during the 30 minutes of practice open to the media.
Browns coach Eric Mangini would not speculate if Rogers would be on the field to face the Vikings.
"With any guys that are on the injury report, we're always hoping they're going to play," said Mangini, who treats all injuries with secrecy. "To say one guy is definitely going to be there or not be there, it changes during the course of the week and that's the reality of it."
The Browns will disclose their first injury report of the season Wednesday, according to NFL rules.
Mangini knows what value the massive Rogers has to Cleveland's 3-4 defense.
"He's an outstanding player," he said. "He's got very good strength against the run. He's got very good awareness of blocking schemes, and he's got a high motor when he plays. That's sometimes tough to do when you're a bigger guy -- play in and play out at a high level -- because you're carrying a little bit more luggage than some of the little guys.
"I think he's also very effective pass rusher, so he's got a lot of great traits."
NFL.com
No way! The season is about to start and Rogers is now healthy???
Boy, I'm sure glad he wasn't hurt too seriously, because if we didn't have him our defense would be much worse. It's almost like the team faked an injury so he wouldn't really get hurt during the pre-season.
He must heal real fast because he was hurt enough to not play in all four season games, but now he's healthy, and that's all that matters.

i think mangini was saving him in hopes that he would not run down late in the season. He was riding the bike the whole time so i have read, Big guy is unblockable 1v1 he needs the cardio

It just added two games to the number he'll be able to play without tiring out at the end of the season. That, along with the rotational depth we have this year Rogers could finish strong.

Did they sit Rogers so he wouldnt get hurt and can finish the season or so Alex Mack wouldnt get hurt and finish the season? Maybe both.

Yes. We were all soooo terribly worried about the big guy... Big Sean is a smart guy. He knows that the more time he avoids practicing on the field the fewer laps he would need to run.

I like the level of secrecy about the injuries and who's starting at QB by Mangini. If you are Minnesota right now how are you really preparing for? You do not know for sure who will be starting QB. That and will Shaun Rogers really be healthy? If he is in the lineup, I don't think the Vikings will be able to run it in between the tackles and we have 4 LBers who can tackle. This is affecting their game-planning for the week so it is a good thing. I find it to be good gamesmanship by Mangini...

He has to list the injuries and their level....but he doesn't have to list the correct injuries or correct level. Just because you say someone is questionable or doubtful doesn't mean they really are.
If I remember correctly, one season Belichick listed Brady as "Questionable" every game the whole season.

He wasn't hurt. He is out of shape and he can't run.
He can play games and do the limited running he has to do from the NT position, but he can't run around for 4 hours in practice.
And that is fine by me...all we are asking the guy to do is neutralize the center and require a guard to help block him.
A plow horse can't run very well just like a race horse is going to fail miserably if you hook a plow to it and ask it to plow the south 40.

the guy did a 360 dunk at a charity event, he weighs anywhere between 350 and 400 pounds depending on who you ask and is around 6'4 (not like he can almost touch the rim without jumping).
how is that not an athlete?

I hope this strategy pays off. His injury was probably listed as "swollen gut muscle". That's OK by me. He's an animal on the field and will go until he just can't go no more. Who knows? Maybe the last two or three games of the year will matter and we'll still have gas in his tank?
I'm sure Fraley and Mack appreciated this approach, too.

No doubt in my mind this is was an agreement they had regarding Training camp and preseason games...work hard in training camp...then when the Preseason games start...we keep you out as long as you keep working out...bikes, weights and keep the weight down.
Good news is Rubin got a lot of work and looked better and better with each game.
prevent an injury, get the most out of Rogers for the regular season.
Now question is Peen...whats the news on the legal front regarding the Vikings two illegal substance users?!?
oh btw...anytime a 360 lb man can DUNK A BASKETBALL - it think its safe to say he's a Freakin Athlete

Unless you are 7'1" like Shaq. Then you should be able to dunk a basketball regardless of weight. (Shaq was pushing 4 bills sometimes at the beginning of the season for the Lakers)

Smart play by the Mangenius holding him out. It saved Rogers from getting worn down, and he got some much needed cardio. It also gave Rubin a chance for some major PT with the starters.
Also changing title to correct spelling.

I think you and a few others are taking the comment way out of context.
I am not saying he isn't good or doesn't have quickness...but nope, he isn't a athlete.
The guy isn't in good shape. He is strong. He looks like the guy tending the grill at the Waffle House.
That said, I am glad he gets away from his grill duties on Sundays to suit up for us.

No ruling has been made that I am aware...the way I understand it is if the ruling doesn't happen today, the soonest the suspensions could take place would be week 2.....if they happen at all.

I got what you were sayin' Ballpeen, and agree completely. I said three weeks ago I hope they sit him out the whole pre-season, whether he was injured or not.

I agree. During Tomlinson's best years he didn't take one snap during the pre-season. And he's in shape. Why waste precious Shaun Rogers energy on games that mean nothing?

I believe it is a bit of nievette on the part of Mangini!
Personally, I don't think the Vikes give a rats ass who is playing QB and who is playing on our Dline. From their perspective, they are the better team! They are going to RUN THE BALL DOWN OUR THROATS until we stop them. Now that they have a savy, veteran QB they can mix it up at will!
DA is slow to diagnose the blitz, Quinn is unproven under fire, we have a rookie center ... THEY WILL BRING THE HEAT UP THE MIDDLE until we show we can handle it!
It is time to end the charade, announce the damn QB and be done with it.

j/c a very interesting take on rogers: Quote:
LESS IS MORE: Other than the QBs, the other big question concerning the Browns is why seemingly perfectly healthy Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers rode the bicycle during training camp and the preseason instead of practicing with his teammates. There have been all kinds of theories as to what’s really going on. Here’s another one after visiting the locker room on Wednesday and seeing Rogers without a shirt on. Just as close observers of the team had surmised while watching Rogers practice – when he did practice – during the spring work, for a few days of camp and in the team’s intrasquad scrimmage, he has lost a considerable amount of weight, and most of it seems to be in his stomach. He doesn’t have much of a gut at all. He looks much, much smaller than the man who was listed at 350 pounds last season. That no doubt was a little low – maybe even more than a little low, as he may have been as much as 365 or 370 by season’s end. But if it were accurate, then Smith can’t be more than about 325 pounds currently. We’ll say he is legitimately about 335. So, with all that being said, was Rogers told by Mangini to stay on the sideline not just to keep his legs fresh and protect him from injury to make sure he’s ready for the start of the regular season, but also to work on the bike and slim way down so as to be even quicker than he already is, and to do all the things he needs to be able to do in the version of the 3-4 scheme being installed by Mangini and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan? Part of it worked, as Rogers is definitely lighter. But more importantly, will it allow him to shine even brighter on the field than he did last season, when he had a Jerry Sherk-like performance? We’ll begin to find out on Sunday.
