BEREA — Football games decided between the sidelines can won or lost by adjustments made under 12 pressure-packed minutes at halftime while coaches try to counter the strategies of the coaches in the locker room down the concourse.
Case in point: Sunday and the opener against the Vikings. The Browns led 13-10 at halftime and then were buried in the second half, 24-7.
The Vikings have more talent, maybe even Super Bowl talent, but Browns linebacker David Bowens said the difference was the Vikings did a better job than the Browns adjusting."At the start of the second half we have to make adjustments when they do and play consistently," linebacker David Bowens said. "We didn't do that.
"A west coast offense (used by the Vikings) typically is scripted for the first 15 plays. They figured out how we played against it. They said, 'This is what Cleveland did. We're going to go the other way.' Certain personnel groups we expected run vs. pass, they switched that up.
"They took advantage of where we were weak. If we showed a safety down, they ran the opposite way. We knew they were going to stick the running game. We just didn't know how. We did different things to switch it up. It was just a little too late."
Offense gathers in one area at halftime to hear from the offensive coordinator, in the Browns case Brian Daboll, and the defense gathers in another to hear from the defensive coordinator, in the Browns case Rob Ryan. At the end of halftime Mangini addresses the entire team.
Twelve minutes is hardly enough time for fans to use the bathroom, grab a beer and make a sandwich. For coaches the halftime flies even faster.
"I think our coaches do a good job coming over with some of the looks we saw in the first half and changing up some strategy on how to attack if we see the same look in the second half," safety Abe Elam said. "It is a condensed time, but we try to take advantage of each second we have."
The fixes the Vikings made worked much better than any the Browns made. After rushing for only 25 yards in the first half Adrian Peterson rushed for 155 yards in the second.
The Vikings had six possessions in the second half, not counting the final one that ended with backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson taking a knee. The others went touchdown, touchdown, punt, field goal, touchdown, punt.
The Browns never crossed midfield in five second half possessions before scoring a touchdown on their final drive.
Bowens said it is easier for the offense than the defense to adjust and Coach Eric Mangini agreed. The defense has to counter-punch on the fly in the second half.
"You go in defensively and say, 'these plays hurt us. This is how we want to handle it,'" Mangini said. "Offensively it could be, 'These plays have been very successful. These plays haven't based on the coverage. We could still run this second set of plays if we want to but we're going to adjust the routes.'
"Sometimes offensively you might be getting a lot of a certain kind of blitz. They'll say, 'If you're going to bring this blitz again, let's audible to this.' Offensively you're reacting to what the defense has done - let's give them more X, Y and Z, more empty, more big people.Defensively you don't get to control what goes out there."
Mangini said adjusting defense on the fly in the second half is "a collaborative effort." Teams get still pictures of every play on the sideline. Mangini said when players leave the field a player and his coach will study the picture. The defensive coach might ask the player if he was in his assigned gap on a play resulting in a long gain for the offense. If the player says he was in position the defensive coach might make an adjustment.
Then when the coach reviews the tape the next day he might see the player wasn't in his gap, that strategically the defense called was correct and that the adjustment was unnecessary.
"You've thrown out a perfectly good defense that could have been successful," Mangini said. "Honesty is very important on the sideline. It's not about assigning blame. It's about fixing the problem."
Mangini took blame for not adjusting run defense quickly enough Sunday. He said defensive players should have done a better job creating "an edge" to force Peterson inside where he would have had to evade more tacklers.
"I talked to the players," Mangini said. "It's not a function of player vs. coach or offense vs. defense or special teams. It's all of us being able to objectively take a step back and say, 'What can I get better at?' That's something I'm asking them each week, something I'm asking the coaching staff each week, something I ask myself each week. It's important that we do that."

How many times have we complained about half time adjustments? And ironically it is one of Mang's weaknesses as a HC..

While some would have you think otherwise, the Vikings would have had to make some serious mistakes in the second half for them to lose. They are clearly a more powerful and talented team.. I'm not so discouraged because it's the first game against a established team that has more talent where it counts..

Without a doubt on the talent issue ! .. We could start talking about the draft and FA. right now .. RG / RT / Safety / TE / and that's in round one

And those holes were known or self created (KW) when Cartman took over...what did he do? Draft a C, 2xWR, and 2x ILB and signed below average to bad stop gaps in Royal, Womack and StClair....it was by choice/poor management....Hank is a better C than StClair is a RT...yet he chose Mack over Oher, or Veikune/Massa over Loadholt
It's time to put some blame on who assembeld that roster and their weaknesses....that offseason was important for us...and they just made lateral moves not really reducing the quantity of needs....S, RT, 2nd ILB, OLB and WR were the needs before the offseason and are still now, since we have filled everything mostly with stop gaps....great job, another offseason wasted
here's what I mean by lateral moves:
Bowens for McGinnest Barton for Davis Elam for Jones Royal for Winslow StClair for Shaffer Womack for Tucker
We didn't get better or younger here...stop gaps Cartman likes for stop gaps he didn't know....as long as he is happy for the Browns this is bad though

I think the adjustment the Browns made at halftime last Sunday was to turn the "suck" knob WAY up.
The Cleveland Browns: The only team who puts a picture of a hat on their hats.

McGinnest retired. Bowens is a stopgap. Should we have paid top-dollar for Bart Scott (who may have followed Rex Ryan anyway?).
Quote:
Barton for Davis
No argument here....one may be better than the other, but marginally.
Quote:
Elam for Jones
apparently you missed the Vikings game? Has Sean Jones had a game like that the last 2 years? Elam was everywhere and even blew by McKinnie on a play to tackle Peterson.
Quote:
Royal for Winslow
blocking for catching. Winslow either couldn't or wouldn't block....plus, would you really want to be paying Winslow what he is making now in TB? Now, he has more overall talent, yes. But, he is working on borrowed time because of his knees and is now overpaid for a guy who can't/won't block.
Quote:
StClair for Shaffer
your answer continues to be Loadholt, however Loadholt looked as bad against the Browns DL as St. Clair did against Minny's DL. Mangini and company looked over tapes from last year and determined that in the AFC North, having an upgrade at OC was a priority and even stated so. Enter Mack. Maybe we should have gone Oher there....but if Mack pans out it will at worst become a JT vs. AP debate (where both teams ended good, so both sides are happy).
Quote:
Womack for Tucker
sadly, Tucker looks like he is done. would you rather have Tucker (in his current state) at RG? and don't bury Womack yet. he had a bad game against the best 4-3 DTs out there. that was his toughest assignment for the year. he will be better.
you forgot the DE's. Coleman and Mosely are huge improvements in run-stopping DE's from anything we had last year at the spot. Pass rushing is suspect from them, but I liked what I saw from Ryan to help get pressure from other places.
CB's - the new guys haven't been tested yet since Minny played a power game. when we see 4 WR we can see if we are improved there.
WR's - disappointing first game by them, no doubt. Good blocking unit (Edwards, MoMass and Cribbs can all block...Furrey tries despite his frame). But we need more from them. Furrey looks like a solid pickup in the slot though (improvement on anything we had last year).

OMG.. I must have found some long lost family because I have been talking about this since Manigini made these personnel moves. They really did not bring in any upgrade talent. Just avg talent that Mangini was familiar with. And its very evident on the Defensive side of the ball. Bowens really is not much better than Davis( hell look that the second half tape, the guard for the Vikings drove him all over the field). Barton, big deal! The only thing I can say about Elam is that I would take only a year of him so I could draft that Safety from USC!
Hell, Mangini and crew missed on the LB they did take. Taking Malava and not Maualuga will go down as a huge mistake!!

I now there are many on here who are far better than I at such analysis.
Obviously whatever we did, did not work. Would one or more of you gurus care to describe, in fairly plain language, what exactly we did different, and why it did or did not work? Same for the Vikings.
Also, if you could point out specific examples as to how these things are identified. Saying we (or they) changed from a Tampa-2 to an underneath zone does not help. I've heard the terms before but have no clue how to tell one from the other. Something like the cornerbacks gave less cushion, they ran wider to the outside, I mean simple terms.

Basically the Vikes started pounding the ball especially to the outside and the Browns did not adjust.. On offense ,well not much was done. They didn't try to run enough and failed to open up the passing game..

To make better adjustments, you must first make SOME adjustments. It also helps to have an OC who knows what to do. I think our DC will be able to handle it, but I need to see MUCH more from Daboll before I feel good about him.

they started picking up our run-blitz better as well.
in the first half, we got a few run-blitzers through their OL unblocked.....i don't remember that happening in the 2nd half.

in your world of no salary cap, im sure we could have brought in all the talent we desire. however, phil bashed the cap, and we're dealing with it.
not every single player on a team can be a pro-bowler.....thats WHY there is a salary cap.

It has nothing to do with busting your salary cap. But it does have to do with finding good football players and getting them on your team. Malauaga was a second rounder, I think we could have afforded him. As far as the LBs, if you cannot afford free-agents, then you need to develop or find a diamond in the rough, not someone you knew from your previous team! Again, do not listen to me, just look at the last game and watch were DQ and Bowens are at on most running plays, under a guard!

"blocking for catching. Winslow either couldn't or wouldn't block....plus, would you really want to be paying Winslow what he is making now in TB?"
And that catching...Royal 4 receptions for 60 yards 1 TD. 15 ypc.
Winslow 5 receptions for 30 yards 1 TD 6 ypc.
I know, I know KW2 was an incredible talent....
Barton n AD... definitely a difference Elam n Jones...Jones is not even playing. Tucker n Womack...we didn't trade, cut Tucker he is still here. Tucker btw played one game last season and that was at RT.
on and on it goes with Django
according to him all 10 rookies on this team suck and will amount to nothing.
We didn't improve our DB situation? We didn't improve our WR situation...we didn't improve on our Depth? Special Teams?
We did nothing but waste time n energy.
We shouldn't have gotten DV...we should have gotten somebody else. We should have gotten Loadholt isn't so easy to see??? Meanwhile who was Django pimping.
Conner Barwin, how bout at # 5 Crabtree??? just who. I know who I was pimping first and 2nd round cause I was hoping for a stellar RT? And a Center!
Oher? 305 RT...might as well move Steinbach there.
ahhhh...had enough...off to practice! got to get ready for Playoffs!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

Playoffs?!?!
I don't think winslow ever dropped 3 passes in a game.
And from what I've seen around the web, oher looked pretty studly at RT in week 1. Granted, it was against the chefs.
I was pleasantly surprised with how Mack played week 1, with the exception of the awful shotgun snaps.
Wasn't Paul Kruger still there when we took veikune? And follett (1st-team PAC 10, 2nd in nation in TFLs) when we took Maiava (2nd-team PAC 10, undersized, likely strictly special teams and occasional nickel lb).
It may be unproductive and beating a dead horse, but given what happened and what should have happened, he is right that round 2 was pretty off.

You know, that was funny at first but it's childish and getting old.
It reminds me of Ammo refusing to call Charlie Frye by his name referring to him instead as "#9 because Frye wouldn't give him an autograph.

Back on topic since we have a new version of Vers in here..maybe he's typing when Django posts..the BROWNS have hardly been a team that we could see made good adjustments at halftime..if they did , they certainly didn't continue to tinker when the opposition countered..

I'm fine with lateral moves for ex-players who know the system and know what Mangini is looking for in this defense. It helps all the other players on the team here get in synch faster having experienced players in each position group.
Elam with the DBs Barton/Bowens with the LBs Coleman/Mosely with the DL
No problems there.
My problem is with moves like St. Clair. That guy is one of the worst RTs in the NFL. Apparently he's a smart guy. Not sure why that's important for a RT.
I watched Royal a bit during the Vikes game and wanted to see a very good blocker. Didn't see it on the plays I replayed on the DVR. I'll reserve judgement there but didn't like it first blush. I like TEs that can block. But for an offense and a QB like Quinn....a TE that can get behind the defense would really really help.
"Porkchop"? Whatever. Not a difference maker.
The first round...loved that. And you'll never hear me complain about high round picks on the OL and DL.
But the second round? That was pretty sad. I hope it pans out for the best.

"Playoffs?!?!"
Was asked to come out of Coaching retirement - Coach OL, DL for Semi-Pro Team. Whose previous best was 3-7 (last season). We are 8-2 with our season finished and going into the Playoffs. And this ain't no Coach B crapola. Came on board one week before their first game. Wish I was with them since Feb...when their TC starts. We got some really good players - to - Just men who can't let go. I've enjoyed coming out coaching again. As always I learned a lot as well as taught a lot. Anyone wants to know more about it PM me. I never knew the league existed and I think there are around 230+ other Leagues in the States. Old time football before the NFL...College Football was the Big game, Pro stuff was small local potatoes. Mostly blue collar guys loving the game!
Winslow dropping...Royal dropping, recollection was one drop by Royal - I'm sure there could be more just didn't jump out at me as a obvious negative.
Nah...he didn't drop much, he pretty much would ruin plays by not being where he was suppose to be. Or whiffing on his blocks in a running game. How many times did Jamal avg. 5 yds p carry against a top Run D team (Vikings entered as #1) - To each their own.
You'll see even St. Clair look studly against poor teams. So did Shaffer. So did a lot. maybe Oher will be good??? Probably would prefer him over St. Clair. But their future with Oher is having him at LT. RT you would prefer a bit bigger. For Us I would have preferred Loadholt. As we got our LT for many years.
I don't see Mack as a mistake in any way.
Shotgun snaps...remember how bad Faine was - saw him snap for Brees almost all Shotgun and it looked crisp - nowhere the same. It takes time...especially when LBs are blitzing or fake blitzing the A gaps. It will get better trust me. Unless he's a complete spazz.
Follet??? I'm very happy with Triple A - I think he will be a much better LB than Follet in the long run.
Kruger over DV...was Kruger OLB or DE? Personally I'm happy with our DL personnel.
Kruger vs DV....means what. Get back to me in 3 years after they develop.
If we had nobody...they 2nd rounders would be Starting. The fact they are not starting doesn't mean they SUCK! It means we finally got talent here where we can groom some picks into their positions before letting them learn on the fly.
"but given what happened and what should have happened, he is right that round 2 was pretty off."
"GIVEN"???? Got news for ya, the Given part has not happened yet for any distinction to be made.
What I do know...regardless of what happens - I'm sure there will be somebody in the 2nd round picked afterward that will give posters the chance to say...SEE WE COULD/Should have taken so n so...
As long as they contribute and develop into players - making the team better.
I see the WR corp much better than before.
I see DV as future ILB the transition takes time from DE...how long till Bruschi became a starter? Guess who his LB coach was
Barton not impressive in Pre-season was very Impressive in our opener.
Am I worried or wondering why DV is sitting? nope why would anyone be.
he is not right...he is a soap boxer tooting his Woah is our ass horn...
Then again Thats JMHO
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

If you don't think Oher can be a stud right tackle, you're smoking something. He's starting there for the Ravens.
And he's 310.

Well after that pop warner game there better be some other adjustments.. I'd be scouring the FA list and get rid of St.Clair..he is about the worse OT, I have seen a while.. Next we need a real RB..oh boy.. Next as I have now been saying, get Cribbs into the slot..we're waisting plays and players because of this.. On to the DB's..o.k I have had enough of this poor excuse of covering/tackling..if we did that back in the day, you'd be benched.. I have never seen DB's who not only allow recievers to catch the ball with cushions a truck would love but instead of coming up and hitting the guy they take a step back and allow the man to turn up and throw some weak move on them(which they bite on) and gain more yardage..

I know what you mean...and I happen to think a lot of it is caused by the scheme/coaching...it's this passive style Romeo and now Mangini preach...."don't get beat deep"...it's that fear of messing up that contributes to this play

I kinda disagree..and this is what I mean..even with cover2/cover 3 the scheme is designed to keep it in front of you..but that doesn't mean the DB allows the wideout to craddle the ball, look up hit a fake and streak for 10 more yards..a aggressive back will come up to challenge the catch and hit the guy..these giys are afraid to tackle and that goes back to last season..just watch how they react when a back.reciever gets into the second level..they are actually letting themselves get faked and act like the want no parting of hitting the man..

This team is passive, its pretty easy to tell that most of them dont care. Bralyon and a few other are playing hard, mainly because they are FA's, and they are playing for money.
This team doesnt want it more, they have no heart, and are poorly prepared, especially offensively.
The Jets showed yesterday why they fired EM, and what the gained from hiring Rex Ryan, attitude, work ethic, leadership, toughness...etc. They beat the pats, with a rook at QB. the Jets players love Rex Ryan, i'd bet 75% of our players pretty much hate EM by the way he ran camp and has handled things. The Jets have that it now that good teams have, we still have the it that bad teams always have.
We need to make adjustments all right, by going back in time about 7 months.
