I really think that the defense is selling out trying to bail out the offense ... but, as often happens in total sell out situations ... the defense is the one getting roasted.

We need DA under center and a more disguised approach on offense. We need more running outta pass formations, passing outta run formations.
We need more screen passes to rb's, wr's, hell even te's. We gotta go play-action on third and short.
We need an offense that actually puts the defense on its heels. Like catches them off-guard once in awhile.

Quinn should get more of a shot than he's had so far. (and I know that many would be surprised to hear me say that given that I have been one of his more vocal critics)
For all of the ugliness that he has shown so far, he was seen as a consensus 1st round talent ..... and that talent may surface. He certainly deserves more than 2 week to try and figure out the NFL game.

Wow, here's a surprise for this board......a thread after a loss asking if we should bench the QB. Actually, I'm surprised it took 2 weeks. Here's another surprise......the guys who loved DA before the season started still love him. What's not to love, he hasn't killed any drives with an ill timed INT yet. Or decapitated a WR who is 5 yards away yet. And of course, Brady hasn't done much of anything yet but his guys (you 3 know who you are) still love him. Even though he either can't throw long or won't throw long. But really, with a RT that apparently uses a walker when blocking and a #2 WR that can't catch or run a 5 yard route when we need 5 yards just what do you all expect from our QBs? And hey, I didn't even mention our Center who apparently thinks whoever stands behind him is roughly 2' 3" tall or our OC who waits to see what's working then calls the opposite for a series or two. You know a lot of the guys on here predicted a winning season. Some even going so far as to say 11-5 or 10-6. Some sports writers came in at a depressing 2-14. And that was before either guy was named starting QB. And what does that tell us? That apparently a lot of guys on this team stink so the team stinks. Changing the QB may change the odor but we'll still stink. On Offense we need a RT, at least one more decent WR, a RB with a little speed and an OC who knows when to call what play. On Defense we need someone, anyone, who can rush the passer on a consistent basis. And gosh, someone who can stop the run when we need a stop. Another decent DB wouldn't hurt either. But hell, yes, let's throw DA out there. He'll make all the difference...........

Multiple choice question: Why are people asking for DA?
A. So we can give up 6-7 sacks a game instead of 4-5. B. Because we just don't turn the ball over enough. C. because we are convinced the TE and #2WR can't be worse than last year. D. We don't really care if the defense is on the field 40 min. a game. E. Our run offense will be better with a different QB. F. All of thee above

Can you devise a list of options as to why we are starting Brady Quinn?

Teams stack the line against Quinn daring him to throw the long ball. Teams will drop back against DA and dare him to throw short. I don't think he can do it.
That is a theory that gets stated pertaining to DA that is simply not true. In actuality what teams do is stack the line on DA and blitz the hell out of him and make him make quick decisions. This has served to take DA out of his game, until DA can learn to read a blitz and hit a hot route he will not suceed in the NFL.
At this point I am not saying Quinn is any better, I just hear this about DA all the time and it is just not true.

This offense is bad right now, and IMO a guy who puts the ball on a line down the field can help that.
Especially a guy who put up crazy numbers when he was the undisputed leader of this offense. When your offense is struggling mightily. And you have a QB who made a Pro Bowl on your roster--you put him in. Especially over a QB who has done nothing but lose and bring his own abilities into question with all the opportunity that he has gotten.

Don't you think it's Ironic that DA is both the Pro Bowl QB and the QB who has done nothing but bring his own abilities into question?
Like it or not, DA still has his very serious faults, just like Brady.

I was going to post Otto but you basically said everything I was going to say.
Week 2 though? Hell there were self professed "gurus" calling for him to be benched after week 1. I am sure glad these geniuses can determine a QBs complete career potential based on two games with a team with a new coaching staff and 40% new players.
I sure wish there was a shaking head in disbelief graemlin

Please, please, please drop the Pro Bowl references when mentioning DA. You can cling to those "crazy" numbers, or his downfield throwing ability if you like. But he backed into the PB and then sucked when he got a chance to play in it.
The only one who mentions him seriously as a Pro Bowler is his agent. And even he's embarassed when doing it.

At this point I think that it is ludicrous to put DA. And Brady in the same sentence---grammar be damned.
DA has produced much more with his opportunities in this league.
And for a guy who was supposed to be heads and tails above DA in ability. BQ fails miserably.
2007 was not a fluke, and neither was 2008.
But I believe that this offense would put up more points with DA at the helm---and right now---that is exactly what we need.

Well, he did win some games too
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I find some of the reactions here laughable. Bench the QB after two games!!! Fire Mangini!!! Sell the team, Lerner!!!
Some posters are drunk & frustrated, which is understandable, but the real problem with the offense IMO isn't a barely-getting-started-in-the-NFL quarterback named Brady Quinn.... not yet at least. It's a bad WR/TE corps and a right side of the OL that is horrific.

I won't disagree that DA would probably put more points up on the board.
I however, I don't think it makes that much of a difference, because he'll also throw more INTs than Brady and he'll have much less mobility, leading to more sacks and QB hits.
DA is probably an improvement over Brady, but at this point, putting DA in isn't going to make this team win, just be close. Why not just continue to see what you have in Brady rather than losing with the same old cast. I think some here still believe that we can win this season, and while 7 wins might feel good, ultimately, it will do more harm than good down the road.
And just in case people are wondering, yes, I'm saying throw the season. It's quite obvious that we need an impact player on offense, impact players on defense and a franchise QB.

Is it time to start DA?
No.
Give Quinn the whole year. That way we can put his ass out of any further discussion. The guy is not an nfl qb.
We're going no where this year, so give quinn the whole season. That way he proves HE's not going anywhere either.
Just wait till next year. That seems to be the mantra of this team.

I'll take DA's faults over Quinn, considering 1 is more fun to watch and actually will make an attempt to use his WRs. We were at least in games with Anderson under center. Neither is not likely here for the long haul anyway.
Quinn = Fry and none are worth starting.

Arch, I agree. Give him the whole year. He does look like he's thinking way to much out there and is afraid to make a mistake. Now we see he wasn't as ready as advertised, so we let him take his lumps this year and see what we have.
Me? I'm not giving up on him yet. I do see that he has some serious issues.

If you don't know what Brady Quinn can or can't do at this point, you are blind. Between the end of last season and this season, most of us on here can "see" pretty clearly what we have (we sure as heck know opposing defensive coordinators can). I'd rather be close in every game this year and still have hopes of coming through with a win than to be downright embarrassed each week with absolutely ZERO offensive production.

How can you say that with a straight face? Quinn has 1 TD in Garbage time against second stringers and 4 Turnovers in two games. He is sacked a ton because he holds th ball too long..you mistake mobility for happy feet.
Remember how putrid we thought the offensive line was in 07 until Anderson came in and got rid of the ball and made quick reads, thus one of the least sacked QB's that year. His 29 TD's to 18 interceptions is not out of proportion compared with a lot of QB's. Especially given it was his first year as starter. Last year it was 9-8, but we all know there was more to it than that. The only argument that is valid regarding DA is his sub 60% completion percentage and short range touch which he has shown to improve on with the occassional hiccup.

I don't agree with this at all. DA is not NEARLY as bad as you ppl make him out to be.
And if he throws two or three td's then I could care less if he throws a pick or two.
His release, historically is quicker then Quinns as well, so I don't see him getting sacked any more oftern then Quinn.
And ppl. He did make the Pro Bowl, he took us to 10-6, he put up great numbers that year. Why Browns fans try to diminish these facts to justify continuing down this path with Quinn just confuses the hell out of me.
I remember people on this board talking about benching DA for the playoffs that year cuz Quinn is the better QB and would be ready by then.
We never made the playoffs that year b/c of a few key losses. But calling it a fluke is stupid.
And benching DA is stupid too.
But Whatev.
I have no say in the matter so I just suffer along week to week and hope that Mangini makes the best decisions for the team.
I think that you ppl already talking about playing for draft picks are str8 out of your minds. We are two games into the season---I don't think the guys lacing 'em up every Sunday are content to just chalk up this season as a loss.
Quinn is really making it difficult on the coaching staff to justify starting him the coming weeks.
I think Mangini made the wrong decision regardless---but I could see that wrong decision had to be made. Until Quinn fell on his face this fanbase would never really get behind DA.
I hope they do---and soon.

Whatever you may think.
DA is still a backup in the NFL and every single attribute and stat points to that. But he made the pro bowl, so he must be great...
Again, whatever you think bud. Hopefully we get Sam Bradford.

ahhhh...
my head hurts...bigbad...throw the season? whyyyyyyy so that some QB who in 3 years hasnt shown he can do it?
i look at the NFL pretty objectively i think...Romo, Kolb, Brady, O'Connell, Palmer, and so on and the like...Who of them really gets to play awfully and get to keep their career as a starter.
We have...and i still believe this...5 WRs that are NFL capable...anyone that blames Cribbs for dropping the balls that he did while getting laid the eff out in the shots that he took...i dont blame him, We said DA got his WRs killed but Quinn did that almost every throw..,his first throw got Cribbs leveled...thats what happened..;
again people...i really honestly think we think that Quinn is too much...Quinn is another QB...we think that oh we gave up a 1st round pick and thats gon na eventaully lead him to a great QB...it doesnt happen as much as we seem to think...hes a bust...oh well...it happens...more often than not...Alex Smith, Akili Smith, David Klingler, David Carr, Dave Brown, Tim Couch, Jamarucs Russell...it happens...we need to just accept that Brady is a bust...He hasnt been able to grab the starting position and hump it into submission like Patches OHoulihan says you gotta...he hasnt and that sucks for us...and Quinn needs to go the way of the bench...not because hes a bust...not because he is a dink and dunker...but because he is a QB that cant get the job done...26 pts. vs the Vikings and Broncos? really? cmon/...

Anderson is still the same damn QB he was in college and will always be the QB. Jesus, I wish people could see Jeff Anderson for what he is, a great NFL BACKUP Qb.
Granted, that looks a whole hell of a lot better than Quinn...

Quit making excuses for Quinn....this kid is awful
we had 3rd and 6 in the first quarter, Quinn has 4+ seconds in the pocket...he throws a 2 yrd checkdown punt
late 1st quarter, same situation,. again 2 yard pass, punt
The kid had only 54 yard passing on 8 completions in the first half....the first half!?
Kyle Orton, who is god awful looked like a real Qb today
You do realize the "whole freaking world" is laughing hysterically at the Browns right now, they are laughing big time
The Browns and Brady Quinn are a complate joke
a 2 yard pass?
a two yard pass is pointless....why bother even throwing the freaking thing
Quinn needs to be yanked NOW....not tomorrow, not next week, not 6 weeks from now...RIGHT NOW, PRONTO, The kid is a total joke and a bust....he is worse than rick Mirer....he is worse than Ryan Leaf for gods sake...yes Ryan Leaf looked better than this kid
I really want what so of you folks are smoking, because people supporting Quinn definitly are not looking at the reality of what this kid has looked like....
my god we won't win a game with Quinn in there..the D just gave up because its pointless....
I think the players are already beginning to pack it in...Dabol is a diaster and should be fired now.
Heck I am hoping Mangini is canned at the end of the year, the guy is a total train wreck, then again so is Randy Lerner....Jr. has no clue how to run a football organization, but he is the prefect absentee owner...the guy is the epitome of failure
this franchise WILL NEVER WIN JACK SQUAT UNTIL RANDY LERNER IS GONE
Sell the team Lerner...your a joke, you have no idea what you are doing
Jr. has no idea what he is doing, the ownership and front office of this franchise is a complete diaster....a total train wreck
this team and Randy Lerner is an absolute embarrassment to the Browns tradition and history. A total embarrassment
People need to start going to games in droves with signs demanding Randy lerner to resign or sell the team
better yet, the staduim needs to be "COMPLETELY EMPTY" on game day....not a darn soul in the stadium...send a message to Lerner in a way that will hit him hard....his pocketbook, let him know these hard working people won't put up with this garbage anymore....its insane...this team will not get one dime from me until they clean this mess up...and it starts with Jr.
Jr. has no clue what he is doing, the guy is a joke of an owner...he is right up there with Al Davis...he is just as bad as Al Davis, the only difference is Lerner meddles behind the scenes by hiring incompetent morons to run things...

Even IF DA helps, thats only one of about 17 things we need to change to be competitive in games, and only one of about 50 to actually win.
Derek isnt gonna do a whole lot more than Quinn, sure he'll go down the field more, he'll turn the ball over more. Its not gonna lead to more wins right now, we have mega issues everywhere.
At this point, we are gonna have to find a QB elsewhere......its not gonna matter...the QB is only one thing on a big checklist.

ahhhh...
my head hurts...bigbad...throw the season? whyyyyyyy so that some QB who in 3 years hasnt shown he can do it?
i look at the NFL pretty objectively i think...Romo, Kolb, Brady, O'Connell, Palmer, and so on and the like...Who of them really gets to play awfully and get to keep their career as a starter.
We have...and i still believe this...5 WRs that are NFL capable...anyone that blames Cribbs for dropping the balls that he did while getting laid the eff out in the shots that he took...i dont blame him, We said DA got his WRs killed but Quinn did that almost every throw..,his first throw got Cribbs leveled...thats what happened..;
again people...i really honestly think we think that Quinn is too much...Quinn is another QB...we think that oh we gave up a 1st round pick and thats gon na eventaully lead him to a great QB...it doesnt happen as much as we seem to think...hes a bust...oh well...it happens...more often than not...Alex Smith, Akili Smith, David Klingler, David Carr, Dave Brown, Tim Couch, Jamarucs Russell...it happens...we need to just accept that Brady is a bust...He hasnt been able to grab the starting position and hump it into submission like Patches OHoulihan says you gotta...he hasnt and that sucks for us...and Quinn needs to go the way of the bench...not because hes a bust...not because he is a dink and dunker...but because he is a QB that cant get the job done...26 pts. vs the Vikings and Broncos? really? cmon/...
Can I get an Amen!

I want to make this clear.
I do not think Quinn is an NFL caliber QB, never said he was. I just don't see why we should throw in Anderson to start when it's quite obvious that Anderson won't do much more than win maybe 7 games and we have a worse draft pick.
Sure, I know that's probably sacrilege, hoping for my team to lose. I don't really care, because without getting elite talent, this team is doomed to the Detroit Lions forever.
We do not have a starting QB on this roster, so switching junk for trash just doesn't really excite me.
you had a good run Hank.

I'm not sure about Lerner but often I get the feeling that he's indifferent to it all.
it's an inhetritance so he may as well keep it. No real enthusiasm for the team or the city or the fans. I might be wrong but even in interviews he says the right things but with seemingly no real conviction.
I hate to say it...but for the most part, Art was a great owner up until the end in those regards. (he now ducks under the desk)

Strike two...
I'm willing to give BQ one more shot to show something...really, just anything. I just need to see some glimpse of improvement. He did look down-field more today, but the accuracy was atrocious (the MoMas pass was horrible, and did anyone see the last drive?). I gave him a pass last week with the Vikings' D, but you can't tell me the Broncos' D is that great. He's going up against the Ravens' D this week, and it's time to put up or shut up: three strikes and you're out...
And for the people saying start DA will just drive up the sack numbers: how many times did BQ get out of a sack today? I think I remember one time in the 1st half, and maybe one scramble in the 2nd half (which almost an QB could have got out of).
When DA is in his zone, he takes a his drop, plants his back foot, and the ball is out, usually in under 3 seconds. (He gets into trouble when this doesn't happen, but that's another topic).
I saw BQ look very indecisive today, especially in the 2nd half. Don't get me wrong, St. Crap was getting beat like a red-headed step child. But I have a hard time remembering a play were BQ just took a drop and threw it, outside of a couple of long passes. Maybe the WR's weren't getting open, but sometimes, you just have to throw it.

Quinn is a dink and dunk QB. For whatever reason he doesn't want to go deep. So to stop the Browns offensive all you gotta do is put 8-9 in the box and watch Quinn throw it for a 2 yard gain on 3rd and 9. I will take Jekyll and Hide over someone who is so one dimensional it has completed stalled our offense.
Many of us stated this before the season even started when the arguement was out there that all you have to do is take away the long ball on DA.
And that may be true, but when you take away the deep ball the run becomes wide open. While taking away Quinns short throws also kills the run in the same process.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

I wish people could see Jeff Anderson for what he is, a great NFL BACKUP Qb.
Is there an inside joke here I"m missing?
Do we have a q.b. named Jeff Anderson that I have not heard of?
What am I missing?
If you're talking about Derek Anderson, you would be wise to use the proper name - otherwise you look no better than Brady.

The Browns make him big $$$$ thats all, otherwise he'd have sold the team awhile ago. He only needs to make a fresh buzz about the team in the offseason, and wallah everyone buys tickets, clothes, and watches them on sunday.
Lerner doesnt care who the QB, coach, RB, or anything else, as long as the fans are spending money and the seats are full, hes happy. He gave the entire organization over to a suspect unproven HC at best. Its a money game, hes taking advantage of the C-Town fans, and their passion for football.
Winning will always be optional with him, because hes a soccer owner, and thats his passion, not football.

Has anything changed since the last regime. Lackluster offense. Bend but don't break defense.....
Throwing the flag on that one.
We are doing anything BUT playing "bend but don't break." We're actually dialing up blitz after blitz, then dropping 9 to try and confuse the QB's. What we AREN'T doing is getting to the QB, or blanketing receivers.
We're breaking, but it's not because we're not blitzing or throwing the kitchen sink at QB's. We simply don't have very good players. (Sooner or later the Homers will realize it).
Toad...looking at it with a cooler head you are correct in that we do have a more attacking style defense this year. I guess I figured while I was ranting why not roll with it.
