Browns change tight ends
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 22, 2009 5:55 PM ET
When the Browns traded a third-round pick to select Martin Rucker in the 2008 draft, there was much excitement in Cleveland about the catch-first tight end.

Just one year later, Rucker is looking to catch another job.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Rucker was waived Tuesday by the Browns, who claimed tight end Greg Estandia off waivers from the Jaguars.

Rucker is known to struggle as a blocker, but he's probably talented enough to get interest elsewhere in the league, if only on a practice squad.

Is this guy a good blocking TE? I know he's a big dude at 6'8", about 260 or so.

Hmm .... kind of surprising that a team struggling to find a weapon for its QB would cut a guy who would seem to be a solid seam type.

It seems Rucker didn't prove much under the previous coaches, and he hasn't shown much with this one. Tough to get too upset about letting him go when he hasn't really contributed.

Perhaps...we have this guy to block...almost like an extra RT?

Maybe a convert to RT ? But I guess he doesn't weigh "enough."

Seems he was a ST guy for the Jaguars.

I'd be surprised if we're not signing him to help beef up the right side of the line. I have a feeling we're not going to see too many TEs on the right side release for passes but instead stay in to help block.

I'd be surprised if he even gets to see the field.

i think you're right. interesting to see what will happen as that would remove a checkdown target. unless we stack the right with royal and heiden and go single back.

Wow, I never had much expectations for Rucker because if he was as good as he was supposed to be he would've been on the field more especially with the previous regime. Just another reason why Phil Savage was the wrong fit for the Browns or any of the other 31 NFL teams and was getting way too much hype when he was with the Ravens. Ozzie is the guy that found talent for them not Phil. The Ravens never skipped one beat when they lost Phil to become our GM. Phil was no better than the Butcher and were not far from where we were back in 2005, how sad .

Yeah, you're probably right, Purp. Royal and Heiden can block.

King has it right IMO. It's all about blocking. Heiden/Royal on the left or right on passing downs. This new guy on the right on running plays? Heck one of our surplus lineman should line up at TE on the right.

I agree;....he's a victim of not having been an original Mangini boy,...I predict the entire roster will have turned over by the end of next season, less the keepers (Thomas, Cribbs, et al.)

expanding on that, can we just put another lineman in at the te spot? are there rules about that?

Ain't no one going to be a target downfield if our QB doesn't have time to throw it. I'm not saying this new TE guy is here for blocking, but just in general.

If there was a poll of which LB's rather go up against.. I bet u HB's would be first, and TE's a close second...

TE's in this game don't block like they use too... The position is evolving into a hybrid position... Most teams want an athletic TE who has nice speed, and can atleast get in the way when needed to block.

I think the big thing is this.. it was a situational issue. If Rucker is in the game.. chances are its a pass... defense will adjust.. and Mangini doesn't want that...

Guess we will keep seeing what we saw the first two games for the rest of the season... Sometimes I think Mangini out thinks himself.. Just like when he knew who the starter was, and didn't tell b/c he wanted the Vikings to game plan for both.. WHAT!!??

Just b/c you, Mangini, have to game plan for two QB's, doesnt mean other teams do.. They just play the game...

You want smart players.. go down a level and coach for the NCAA in the ivy league...

You do know that he had 1 year (rook year) with the "previous regime?

You do know that he was injured that year?`

Yeah, who needs a receiving-TE...Rucker isn't a blocker, he's a TE/WR hybrid and should have been used as such...and Quinn could need someone like this...I'm sure he pissed him off in blocking drills...another square-round hole thingy imho

At least they got rid of this Floyd guy...Mangini is absolutely obsessed of bringing in players from teams he plays against...looks like "spying" is still part of his preparation style

Overall I don't like this devotion to what the opponents do...again, he's trying to outsmart and anticipate...meanwhile we have no identity, which should be the HC'S MAIN concern....not what the opponent does....this passive paranoid stuff is really getting old

Browns add TE Estandia, CB Madison.Related Stories

Posted Sept. 22, 2009 @ 6:54 p.m.
By PFW staff
The Browns signed TE Greg Estandia and CB Anthony Madison on Tuesday. To make room for Estandia and Madison, the Browns released TE Martin Rucker and DB Marquis Floyd.

Estandia, whom the Jaguars released on Monday, is likely to back up Steve Heiden and Robert Royal. He has 19 career catches.

Madison should provide an immediate boost to the Browns' coverage units. He led the Steelers in special-teams tackles a season ago but was waived when Pittsburgh trimmed its roster to 53 players. Madison could also vie for playing time in nickel situations on defense.

Floyd and Rucker didn't play in Cleveland's first two games of the season. Former Browns general manager Phil Savage had high hopes for Rucker and traded a 2009 third-round pick to Dallas to move up and select the former Missouri star in Round Four of the '08 draft, but Rucker caught just two passes in his brief career in Cleveland.

If we are doing that, then we won't beat too many NFL defenses with only 3 in passing routes (6 blocking, 1 QB, 1 RB Chipping, 3 in pass routes).

I'm hoping they see more in this guy than they did Rucker. I looked at his bio and then googled him and found that he was fairly productive at Nevada.

Maybe he will get some run.

I've gotta think it's an either/or for the most part: either a TE helps block or a RB chips. JMHO

This release is yet another black eye on Phil Savage.

Where's that thread asking if we're now paying for the sins of Savage............

I have been leading the Estandia bandwagon since his JR year at UNLV....leading the wagon? Heck I was alone on the wagon.

I like the kid a lot....decent blocker...but has a hard time getting low enough.....I like him a lot as a pass catcher....but at the end of the day...you have two ways to look at it.

1 Kid went undrafted...and is on his 3rd team

2 Kid is still in the league after 3 years...and at least 3 teams have liked him enough to give him a shot (Bengals, Jags, and now Browns)

I think it's more a sign that we're committed to Quinn for the long run.

I mean ..... a TE who could run downfield ....... we don't need that. We need guys who can get open in the 2-4 yard range.

Sorry .... I just had to.
