like the title says. i typically avoid doing so even when i think it's a good matchup just because it's hard to root for both. just a general FF philo question for you guys.
my current example: i have jay cutler and joe flacco as backup. flacco, you could argue, could have a good day but i still have to stary jay just because i'd feel miserable if flacco started and had a big day, almost like i rooted against my team. it's also why i almost never draft within the division.

I like to win my fantasy league, but I don't "root" for my fantasy players. So yeah I play players against the Browns.
I actually tried to trade for Flacco so I could start him this week, since McNabb is my QB and he's out.

i pretty much dont play fantasy football at all for this reason. i cant mix business (the browns) with pleasure (fantasy football). I couldnt pick any player from the afc north, therefore it pretty much kills my chance to win. I never understood the rationale for people that start players going against the Browns, some say " i hope such and such player scores 3 touchdowns and has 200 yards, but the Browns win" so let me guess this straight, you want the opposing teams players to have a field day against the browns, blasphemy

I always start guys against the Browns, that would be stupid not to considering how bad our defense typically is.
I dont root against the Browns though, you rooting for your fantasy guys has nothing to do with what they end up doing.
If I start guys against the Browns and they suck it up, oh well, at least the Browns did well.

I agree with Topdawg. When it comes to fantasy I take my heart out of it. I look at the matchup use my head to make the decision. I also don't have a problem having players on my team that I generally don't like. It's not really about cheering for the player as it is trying my best to win.
The things is while watching the game I don't really care about my fantasy team. I look at that after the game is over.

+1
I already have Flacco as my backup, behind Cutler. It's going to be a tough call this Sunday. The Bears are in Seattle......Cutler should do well but Flacco could have a field day against us.
Overall, when it comes to fantasy football, Vegas bets, pickem pools or just plan shooting the crap with my friends....I go with my head and not with my heart on everything. My wife picks the Illini to go all the way EVERY FREAKING YEAR in the NCAA brackets.....she was almost right one year but massively wrong every other year. Why? Because she can't pick against her boys. It's not a contest of what you want to happen...it's what you think will happen.

Vegas bets, I just avoid Browns games all together. Unless I honestly believe we'll cover. I'll bet on the Browns, but never against.

since we're in the same situation, what do you think you'll do with the cutler/flacco choice?

I agree. I start guys vs the Browns, but I would rather have the Browns win then me win in fantasy...

All the time. I'm elated that someone in my money league foolishly dropped the Ravens D last week. They should score atleast 20 to 25 for me. Of course I'll be rooting for the Browns, but when Ed Reed scores on a pick 6 I can atleast take solace in the fact that it's points for my fantasy team.

You play FF with your head not your heart. Otherwise you end up like one of the guys in my league who is a steeler fan and gave up Flacco and Ronnie Brown for Big Ben and Fred Taylor just so he could have big ben or like another who I took advantage of because they wanted Jeff Reed

Dude, it's not cool to play against 3rd graders. lol. Who in the devil DROPS the Baltimore defense? ESPECIALLY in a money league!
And to give my couple of pennies to the original question...
I don't care if someone is going against the Browns or not - if they have a better matchup than someone else on my roster - they play. And this week? You'd be foolish if you're looking to win your game if you DON'T play someone from Baltimore.
To take it a bit further - I'm in the championship game of both my fantasy baseball leagues. I don't "stream" players during the year - I find that if you have a plan at the draft and draft according to that plan you don't need to stream...until the championship game. At that point I'm all in. Since I'm a Pirate fan - and I know that they blow like few teams have - I have no problem picking up opposing teams starting pitchers for at least the day. Example - today I picked up Arroyo for Cincy and he got me seven solid innings and a win for my fantasy team...and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to sleep tonight. I'll try to do the same with Dodger starters over the weekend.
I'm in it to win it - it's not about rooting "against" your team, it's being realistic.

Prayers to you sir, prayers to you. Every Colts fan I've met though has been cool, so maybe you have one reasonable person in there, lol.

Man I'm always an outlier. Dong I never start players against the Browns. I DO root for my FF players, and don't want to "curse" the Browns. I also never draft Ravens or Steelers b/c I don't want to hope they do well. I figure there are plenty of good players w/o using ones I'd hate. I mean there is no way Hines Ward would be on my team. I just couldn't do it.
I wouldn't start Flacco against us anyway. If they have a brain at alll they will run and run some more. I would not throw much against us. Until we prove we can stop the run...........then run. I'd bet his point total will be low this sunday.

Right now, I have Flacco starting. I might change it 4 times before the games start. It's really a coin flip. The cbs.sportsline "guru" has Flacco with 11 points and Cutler with 10. I'm sure one will score 34 and the other 4....my luck, it's Cutler and I don't start him.

I say go with your first choice. I switched from Cutler to Cassel when they announced Cassel would play last week because Cutler was going against the Steelers. Cutler ended up with 27 points and Cassel with 21 and I lost by 1.

That's the beauty of fantasy football...it makes fans of the not so successful teams(sadly, our Browns) have something to root for..keeps you interested in all the games and takes the sting out of the home teams loss...the Browns D sucks...so hell ya I am starting Flacco against them.

Makes no sense to start Flacco imo. If this game turns out as ugly as its predicted then why will Flacco need to air it out. With McGahee, Rice and McClain they can pound all day long .... start the Ravens RBs not the QB.

i actually picked up buckhalter and started him last week only because he played the browns....you have to be realistic...if you want to win in fantasy football u do what it takes...it's not just the browns...if someone is playing a bad team or a team that has given up more points to certain type of position i try and start them... That said...i root for the player to have a good day but the browns to win anyways...

I have McGahee in one of my leagues.. I would have to put him over Chris Johnson or Clinton Portis...
Portis hasn't done much for me this year.. and McGahee is getting scores...
Its a 3 WR league.. so I can't play McGahee as a flex...
So what yall think?

if i were you, portis running on the lions and i'm pretty happy with that matchup. not to mention, he's the main back vs baltimore's rotation and i wouldn't put mcgahee in. that's just me though and this is regardless of the past 2 games.

it's pretty simple for me....I usually don't end up with Ravens/Steelers/Bengals on my team.
I play in a league that has a couple Bengal fans...they tend to slightly overrate those guys anyway.
everyone slighlty overrates Steelers players....and the Ravens (until Flacco) generally haven't had anyone I've wanted to have in the first place.
so, my slight downgrade on draft day of those guys (just from internal bias...not even really trying to) generally makes me avoid them naturally.
but, you always play the matchups of what you have....anyone that had Adrian Peterson in week1 better have started him. Don't root for him, but just start him and forget about him till Monday morning.
