Cleveland Browns' Coye Francies loses temper in locker room
By Mary Kay Cabot
September 25, 2009, 2:18PM

Plain Dealer photoBrowns defensive back Coye Francies, shown working against Braylon Edwards during training camp, apparently lost his temper after a locker room prank today.BEREA, Ohio -- Browns rookie cornerback Coye Francies, an apparent victim of a rookie prank, threw a bucket of ice at some of his fellow defensive backs in the locker room Friday and even threw a punch at safety Abe Elam before being led outside by some veteran teammates.

Francies burst into the locker dripping wet and carrying a Gatorade bucket full of ice and water. Apparently, his teammates had dumped a bucket on him and he was looking for revenge.

The incident happened during the media's open locker room period. Francies threw half the bucket toward cornerback Brandon McDonald, some at safety Mike Adams and then headed toward Elam. When he got to Elam, he threw a punch, but Elam grabbed his arm. Before it got out of hand, Shaun Rogers, Eric Barton and D'Qwell Jackson led him outside to settle him down.

"We were just playing around, having some fun and games, know what I'm saying?,'' said Francies at his locker after cooling off. "That's pretty much it. It was all fun and games.''

So that's your story and you're sticking to it?

"Absolutely,'' he said, with a smile on his face.

While Francies was outside, McDonald grabbed a broom and dustpan and cleared the ice away from his locker area. He declined help from an equipment aide.

"We were just having a little fun with some of the young guys,'' said McDonald. "It was all in good fun, but he got a little aggressive. (Rogers) made sure it didn't get out of hand. We took care of it and we're moving on.''

Several teammates, including safety Brodney Pool, visited Francies at his locker to help smooth things over.

I dont know if you have ever played organized football at any level but stuff like this happens all the time. Its really not that big of a deal and it really isnt anything that the team would consider cutting him for. As a matter of fact most coaches would like the fact that the kid has heart. They may tell him to cool it in front of the media but that is about it.

A completely pointless article. This shouldn't have even been mentioned as a footnote in a real article, much less been its own article.

There's another article floating around out there that quotes Edwards as saying "Welcome to the Cleveland Browns Locker Room!" when the commotion started.

Not sure that's a good sign.

Ha, I was about to say save it for Sunday.

Use that aggression in the right forum. I don't have a problem as long as it doesn't get out of hand and is isolated. If fights are breaking out like this often, then we have problems...

My guess is the Quinn/Smith incident had alot to do with that comment.

The good thing is that the players came together and resolved the issue. Believe it or not things like this can ultimately bring the team closer together, this could be the first step in building some real comraderie.

I'm actually glad it happened,...these guys can use all the motivation they can get.

BTW Rish,...this the other article.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland rookie cornerback Coye Francies, incensed over a prank, threw a bucket of ice and at least one errant punch during a skirmish in the Browns' locker room.

Francies

As the team returned from practice Friday, a dripping-wet Francies, who had been soaked by teammates, stormed into the locker room carrying a water bucket full of ice. Before he could be stopped, Francies tossed the ice on cornerback Brandon McDonald, hitting him with cubes and covering the floor.

Francies flung some ice in the direction of safety Mike Adams before heading toward safety Abram Elam's corner cubicle. Francies then swung his arms at Elam, who deflected the blows, before Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers grabbed him by the back of the shirt and escorted him out a side door.

"Welcome to the Browns locker room!" wide receiver Braylon Edwards hollered as players rushed over to check on the commotion.

The incident happened while the locker room was open to reporters. The Browns (0-2) play at Baltimore on Sunday.

"Calm down, man," Rogers told Francies as he pushed him outside.

Francies returned a few minutes later and went straight to his stall at the back of the locker room, next to the equipment area. He still seemed irritated as he sat there. Rogers, linebackers D'Qwell Jackson and Eric Barton and safety Brodney Pool tried to calm him down.

Francies later said the incident was not serious.

"We were just playing around, having some fun and games, know what I'm saying?'' Francies told reporters. "That's pretty much it. It was all fun and games.''

Walker: No joke

The Cleveland Browns are 0-2 and in desperate need of a victory this weekend. So why exactly are the Browns playing around?, James Walker asks. Blog

Asked if he was sticking to that story, he replied "Absolutely,'' with a smile, according to The Plain Dealer of Cleveland.

At the other end, McDonald did some housekeeping in front of his stall.

"It was just guys having fun," McDonald said, whisking the ice into a dust pan with a broom. "I was the first one he saw. He got a little aggressive, it's no big deal. We handled it. It's over now and we're going to worry about the Ravens. We don't want to have any misconceptions in the locker room.

"So that's it. We took care of it, and we're moving on."

After dressing, Francies had cooled down enough to smile.

"It's all just fun and games," he said. "We were just playing around."

Later, Francies went to coach Eric Mangini's office to explain what happened and acknowledged he had overreacted.

Mangini wanted to do some further investigating and consulted with other players and team leaders to make sure there was no lingering conflict.

"I said, 'Was there anything malicious about this? Is there something deeper here?" Mangini said. "And to a man, they said, 'No it was nothing like that.' He's a rookie, he's young. He should have put it in the right context. I trust the guys I talked to. I talked to him afterward and he said, 'I should have handled it differently."

The Browns dropped their first two games with second-half collapses in both. But despite the slow start, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan senses that Cleveland's players are determined to turn their season around.

"I know our guys are ready to fight," he said. "They're starting to care for each other. We're coming together. I can see it."

J./C,
This is just a prank Vets pull on rookies in every NFL locker room and Francis over reacted. The players took care of it and that will be that. BUT I will say, Francis has not done much at all to get mad about a prank in a locker room!!

Where did you read that? It can't be further from the truth according to a very close friend of mine that works with the SJSU football team.

He had one knock coming out of college, an incident at Oregon State that violated a policy. He was in the back seat of a car when the car got pulled over and the driver threw his gun in the back - Coye was the closest to the gun and the police assumed it was his. Charges were eventually dropped, though because Oregon State has a 1 strike rule when it comes to weapons, he was dismissed and went to San Jose State where he did not get into any trouble and is said to be incredibly polite and lacking in any attitude.

One of the oldest gags in the book in a locker room is dumping a bucket of ice water over the top of a stall when someone is dropping the kids off at the pool.

I'd be peeved too. I don't blame him.

btw...he might be the best player from this year's draft. I hope he gets on the field more often.

In a related story, a number of Browns players wore sandals from the shower area to their lockers. Oh ya, and grass is green.

At least this reporter isn't bothering to write the same old "...this is why the Browns stink" article.

I think this tells us 2 things:

1. Rogers cares enough to take care of this problem on his own. I love that. He has been portrayed as a guy who's just playing for a check and if you ask me, Shaun Rogers is becoming one of the leaders in this locker room. I would have loved to see the look on Francies face when Rogers was picking him up off the ground and bringing him outside.

2. Braylon is a punk. Plain and simple. That guy is here for one more year, no doubt about it.

Yeah, I'm not happy about that quote at all. I think it speaks volumes about Edwards state of mind. And I think it's all negative.

Edwards just wasn't born to be a leader. He isn't the type of personality that can last on a losing team and be a catalyst to turn the team around. That's not his makeup. He would be beyond dynamic on a consistent winner, and he would be the toast of the league. Being on the Browns just isn't a good fit.

Conversely, I think just the opposite about Winslow, and he's the one who's no longer here.

WOW a guy cant make a joke?

Serioulsy do you all just sit back and pray for something to happen so you can bash Braylon Edwards...again...and AGAIN?

It sounds like the whole team was playing around joking around.....but since Braylon said it that makes him a bad guy, and a terrilbe person....

You need to look past your obvious Michigan bias and see that he's a moron. Everyone knows it, with the obvious exception of you. I'm not just talking Browns fans, I'm talking people around the league who say his trade value is hurt because of his awful attitude.

This has nothing to do with me rooting for Michigan but thanks for bringing it up as it proves a point as to why Braylon is hated...I made no mention of Ohio State or Michigan but this is your rebuttle to what I said? get real kid....Braylon cracked a joke...big freaking deal!

He played his butt off sunday and you all rooted for him....he makes a joke and you all want to run him out of town....this is truely pathetic!

That's the weakest part of your argument. You think that we dislike him because he's from Michigan. I, and any reasonable fan (aka almost everyone on here) dislikes him because he's a punk, a moron, and he isn't a team player. I could give countless examples of how awful he really is. The reason the Browns didn't trade him this offseason is because of his attitude. We couldn't get enough for him for this reason.

What on earth makes you think his comments are a joke? He played hard on Sunday, but it doesn't change who he is, or what he's done.

Do me a favor and quit reaching because thats all your doing right now.....This whole story is being blown up and made into something its not. This kind of crap probably happens alot more than any of us realize...this is not the end of the world.

How do you know that Braylon said that not in a joking manner? how do you know that he meant to make all of you mad THATS RIGHT YOU DONT!.....the article is garbage and didnt need to be written to begin with....and to have some of you guys ripping on Edwards for making an Obvious joke of a comment is rediculous!

Who brought up Michigan? THATS RIGHT YOU DID SMARTY!!!!

It never crossed my mind that is why you all was being so negative I just said that it was pathetic to hate on the guy for joking around......when Coye throws punches at other players its a "boys will be boys" approach....but Braylon makes a joke and its "braylon is a punk, a moron, a crybaby, a locker room cancer" approach....

But if you want to follow the herd of sheep and jump on a guy when the masses do go ahead. I think I will speak my own thoughts and my own opinions on things rather than follow what the herd is doing!

The ice and bucket and water are the minor things, it's the fact that Francies THREW A PUNCH and missed that is the reason, I believe, the story got printed.

No big deal probably (but if Mangini fined a guy for water . . . ), but when you're 0-2, and playing only one half of football, the reporters, the media, the naysayers will have a field day with it.

As for Braylon, at this point who really, really cares what the hell he says? As long as he's catching the ball and not being detrimental to the team who cares? We all know he's on borrowed time here.

And his "welcome to the Browns locker room" is not the worst thing he could have said and some of you are reading into it.

yeah you got ot all figured out bud!

See this is whats wrong with this board, if you go against the herd of mindless sheep people start mouthing off to you. And then the they start to dog pile. USNavyDawg (Ret.) why dont you do yourself a favor and keep your nose out of stuff that has nothing to do with you, and maybe try growing up while you are at it! I was talking to Deepthreat, and didnt need your two cents thrown in there. Especially if you was going to insult me the way you just did, I am sticking up for a CLEVELAND BROWN's player yet you throw an inuslt my way because I am not afraid to go against the grain and instead of jumping on Edwards for something dumb, i said WOW big deal the guy made a joke....

So this must have to do with me being a Michigan fan, and having a man crush on Edwards....talk about moronic!

I must have missed that, do you have an example of a team that didn't want him, for that reason? You don't think teams would tolerate his "attitude" for his potential?

And why the Michigan bashing? Not all Browns fans drink the scarlet-and-grey Kool-Aid, especially when Robiskie obviously can't fit into his big-boy uniform.

I have been one of Edwards biggest supporters on this board ... at times, the only one.

I don't think the quote makes him a bad person ... I do believe it gives insight into his state of mind. There is no other way to take the comment other than he meant it sarcastically ... no other way. You can tell from his body language on the field, on the sidelines, and in his pressers that the losing act is wearing on him ... this sarcastic comment is just a continuation of that.

There is no mention in the article that he tried to break it up or took any action that a leader might take.

I took it as a joke, but if you want to go that route lets take a look at it that way.

So him being sarcastic and sick of losing is no different than all of us posters here who vent about how sick of losing we are, and how we are tired of getting beat each week.....the guy is Human! And is no different than you or I when it comes to being upset with the situation. Edwards is playing pretty good football this year, the guy wants to be here when we turn it around, but when the rest of the team is playing like a pile of crap its would be hard on the ego. We got a few players on this team to build around....Edwards is one of them. We dont have any real impact players in the skill positions, other than Joe Thomas what do we really have on O?

If he goes next year we will be worse than we are this year!

I dont think anyone on the Lions last year was that glad and happy to be there either!

And if a fight breaks out and you see Shaun Rodgers starting to head that way I would of stayed clear as well.

Eskimos dismiss shovel incident at practice

By The Canadian Press
Sat. Sep 26 - 4:46 AM
EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos, in a three-way dogfight for first in the West Division and bracing for hundreds of rabid Saskatchewan Roughriders fans invading their house this weekend had one more thing to deal with Friday — burying the hatchet over a shovel.

Eskimos defensive tackle Xzavie Jackson was welcomed back on the practice field after a bizarre fight Thursday with teammate Aaron Fiacconi that led to Jackson going after him with a shovel.

"I’m very disappointed," said Jackson, sporting sunglasses and a bandage over a swollen eye, after the team’s final run-through prior to today’s game against the Roughriders (7 p.m. AT, TSN).

"That’s not me. That’s not my character. I know I could’ve made a better choice. I’ve apologized to my teammates and that’s all."

Fiacconi, the starting centre, said it’s all part of the wild emotions of a violent game, but noted, "We have to have some kind of control out there. It got away from us a little bit yesterday and it won’t happen again."

The dustup occurred during practice with Fiacconi getting his work in at three-quarter speed while Jackson, a spot starter, came at him at a much higher tempo.

Finally, Fiacconi had had enough. Wham wham wham — he rained fists on Jackson while no teammates intervened.

As media and others looked on Jackson (whose first name is pronounced ex-ZAY-vee) stormed off the field, yelling and whipping off his practice jersey. He walked past a nearby dumpster, spotted a long-handled metal shovel, turned on his heels and stormed back onto the practice field marching toward Fiacconi.

Eskimos' GM Danny Maciocia, standing nearby, jumped into action, standing in the path of the six-foot four, 240-pound lineman, gently putting his hand on his chest and gesturing to the shovel.
