I think he's just trying to motivate with his presser but I like it anyway...

Pretty funny too !

I think the wrong coordinator is falling on his sword.

Rob Ryan is still a fantastic coordinator who is getting every last bit of talent out of his defense right now.

i agree, our defense has looked pretty good until they eventually run out of gas from spending the whole game on the field

Yes.

Al Davis and his noted meddling in coaching affairs. Considering Ryan was successful everywhere else *as well as pretty successful in Oakland for a few years* there is a lot of reasons to think he'll be a good DC in Cleveland.

wtf? Oaklands defense was ranked near the top in YPG. It was their offense that was horrible.

Ryan reminds me of that guy in Roadhouse... Sam what's his name. lol
He looks like a biker, or a guy who might play bass in a southern rock band. He might be our next HC, too...

Sam Elliott plays Wade Garrett.

Rob Ryan looks like Sam Elliott carrying triplets.

One thing about our D - they haven't got a turnover yet. We need some of that.

I also like Ryan because he refuses to die his hair, even though he's got some grey.

I am rooting my butt off for Mangini, but if he fails... I would LOVE this guy as our Head Coach.

I have nothing but respect for him after hearing how he handled that. I think he would make a better head coach than Mangini. If anything he earned all my respect.

Finally got around to listening to his presser.

Fairly impressive. He talked like a head coach.

He's straightforward and seems sincere. He actually had the entire room of reporters on his side. You could feel them rooting for him in their tone and questions. If he could get a room full of reporters who are just itching to rip him apart to actually be on his side ... what could he do as a head coach? Very interesting.

Good coach...

He stated...something about throwing a dummy at somebody to fire them up??? And said it was a player that "HE" brought into the team from Jackson State.

That player was Marcus Bernard on our practice squad.

DV...Triple A...of course if you listen to enough posters all our draft picks are BUSTS...

hmmmm, should we listen to Ryan or Django...Ryan or Django.

Call me stupid but I'm going with the straight shooter who actually knows football.

JMHO - Ryans a good coach...good for this team

If and when he has any success here he'll be gone as a HC.

Complete opposite of Mangini and I actually buy what he's saying!

Someone help me out. I'm NOT the kind of guy who is an emotional thinker... I want Mangini to get his time and prove he can right the ship, BUT:

I am absolutely astonished with Rob Ryan. Taking into account his attitude with the play he has gotten from this D along with his family, I'm ready to hire him as head coach right now.

Someone give me some reasons why this is a terrible idea so I can go back to being my level headed self.

I love Rob Ryan and think he can be a very good Head Coach. I was all over us getting him as our DC.

But you don't give up on your head coach after two games. I can honestly say that I've loved everything Mangini has done. I don't care how charismatic he is, or how well he deals with the media. He knows x's and o's, is a disciplinarian, and is all about the fundamentals.

Give him a chance. He had two good seasons in New York, and I see no reason he can't do better here.

He may not want to be a head coach: Since he's explained how much he loves to coach the individual players and how much fun he has doing it, knowing that he'd no longer have that one on one with the players may make the being a head coach less desirable.

He may not have the overall organizational skills needed to be a head coach: A head coach is responsible for all of the daily organization of the entire team and all of it's units. That includes so many things that are actually unrelated to football coaching as well as other stuff such as practice and meeting scheduling, meeting with all the coordinators and assistant coaches daily to make sure the everyone is on the same page, assisting in the game planning of not only the defense but of also the offense and special teams. The list goes on. He may not have the skills for that and/or he may not have the desire to get into all that. He may be happy being a DC as it seems that is what he really loves doing.

He may be considered to have not had the kind of success as a DC that invites one to offer him a head coaching job: Most HC's have had a reasonable run of success being coordinators studying under a successful HC. (John Harbaugh of the Rats might be an exception to that. There are probably others.)

He may not possess the personality required by owners for that position. I would guess that most owners would shudder at the prospect of hiring a hippy/biker-looking dude to be, if not the face of the franchise, the main spokesman.

He may not have the temperament for that position: Ryan seems to be the type who takes no crap from nobody. That could lead to knock-down-drag-outs with an owner or team executive who he vehemently disagrees with.

He talks and acts like no other head coach I've ever seen: Dude seems to be one of us notwithstanding the fact that he's a professional defensive coordinator in the National Football League. He seems to care not to choose his words in a politically correct manner or side-step questions. It seems he likes his conscience to be clear so he simply says what is on his mind and he says it like he's talking to his players or to a buddy or to us.

I'm out of reasons.

I think he 'could' become a good head coach, but apparently some people thought that about a former DC named RAC,...I wouldn't wish that on Ryan. But until Mangini does right the ship, Ryan would be as good a candidate as any, were the Mangini ship to sink today.

Lampdog,

I sure hope the D shows ALOT more before that promotion occurs...

I think we got the lesser of the two Ryans...14 more games to change my opinion on that front.

The 'D' has been far from perfect, but they kept us in both games this season. I was only half-ass speculating about Ryan as or next HC.

I know Lampdog, sorry if it read like I was bashing you. I just meant that for me the jury is still out on Ryan....I like what I hear but am still looking to see how the product evolves.

So far it seems like we hang for half a game and then the D becomes porous. I understand that the players may be giving up, and the Offense has done nothing to help, but at the same time the other teams offense seems to be adjusting to our D at the half and then coming out and having success in their first couple of series when our D should be rested from the break. We need to make more impact, momentum changing plays ... I just haven't seen it. There were flashes in the Vikings game, and it was exciting to watch, and then it kinda disappeared last week.

Alot of football left ... hopefully we turn it around.

I love the guy, too. He seems like the kind of guy that players would do anything for. He's seriously charismatic and there seems to be no BS at all with him.

BUT... I'm not ready to hire the guy as our next head coach after one or two pressers - one where he says that his hot-head play call blew up an entire game. I realize that he was taking onus and that everyone knows that one play can't change an entire game but I'm just sayin.

He seems awesome and I'm really psyched that he's on staff. I think he's going to be a great DC for us. But Charisma and likeability aren't enough to hand the keys to the kingdom over. We did that with RAC and you all see where that got us.

I think he looks particularly refreshing in light of "No Fun" Mangini but lets give our HC just a few more games before we run him out of town and start over again for the 114th time in the last ten years.

Next head coach... Reminds me of when everyone wanted GRANTHAM to be the "head coach in waiting/Crennel's 'Successor!'" just because he dressed like a damn PUMPKIN!

Yes, that deserved every single emoticon because it is HYSTERICAL.

Yeah, it's nearly as comical as 23+ pages of Quinn v Anderson talk and that's become a weekly ritual!

There's no end of comic material within this organization.

If it wasn't so old and pathetic I might have a good laugh.

I see what you are saying, but there is one distinct difference. Grantham and Chud were both first time coordinators, while Ryan is a very respected veteran DC. If he hadn't been hindered by Al Davis, I think he would already be a head coach.

I see this alot, would you care to elaborate exactly how Al Davis hindered him in any way shape or form. Did he hold his hands over his eyes while he tried to call plays ?

Everyone knows Davis hindered Rob Ryan, because everyone keeps typing it even when they have no earthly idea if it's true or not.

I'd heard it too...a search reveals alot of stuff like this.

http://ballhype.com/article/raiders_defensive_coordinator_al_davis_has_a_new/

A number of Raider fans on their forums I checked at Ryabs hiring talked about Ryan being handcuffed by Davis and to be fair there were those that thought otherwise. The above link is current though and basically says nothing seems to have changed.

Oh I have seen the stuff out there. Just dont buy it. If Davis handcuffed him then Is Al Davis responsible for the years they led the league in D. It cant be both ways. Unless Davis is calling the plays on a down to down basis what is there to handcuff or hinder ?

He made Ryan run the 4-3, didn't draft players for his scheme, and even called down to the sideline to make them change the scheme.
