I meet with Mr. Davis in the offseason," Ryan said. "That thing is just (wrong), and I want to make sure you got it right. I meet with the owner in the offseason. He's the boss, he's the man that hired me, and that's been well-documented. I don't meet with him on game plans or come up with all this. It's amazing when things like this come out when we have a bad week. Put it on me, that's where it belongs. I'm the man that runs the defense. "That's what I'm up here for. We have to bounce back. It's not one of my players. It's me right here, all on me." http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/raiders/2008-09-11-rob-ryan_N.htm

Damage control or utilizing the "Don't burn any bridges" theory?
Can't say for sure myself. Davis controling or not I can't say.
I liked what I've heard Ryan say here so far and hope he gets a chance to gain talent and develop our D.

True, I wouldnt expect any less from a smart coach. But I tend to think Oaklands defensive fall off had more to do with personell than with the owner.

This will pass for class until the real thing show up. Too little corner, too much zone, too little tackling, but we kept trying.

He said the same thing here.
I'm a little worried that this guy's defenses don't look so good. Sunday's game featured some of the worst defense I've witnessed as far back as I can remember.

I believe an offense that is like 6-30 on third downs contributes to how bad our defense is.
I also believe that an offense that can't put up ANY points is pretty demoralizing to a defense. Why try and make a tackle if our offense isn't even gong to move the ball.
Our D was pretty decent the first half of the Minny game, got smoked in the second half---but our O couldn't stay on the field either.
And when you don't score, and you give the other teams Offense chance after chance, eventually they will succeed.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

I understand getting tired.. but if one player on our defense feels that way, CUT HIM.

Not quitting, but I think it's more of the reality that if you give a guy like Adrian Peterson enough chances - not only AP but any other big-time playmaker - he's going to hurt you sooner or later. Same with the Broncs game, then the defense got manhandled vs. Ravens, from the get-go.

Maybe I'm just old school but I'd turn that around.. as a defense I have to think, if we can just hold them again, our offense is going to make a play.

What I meant was, the D kept us in games against Broncos and Minny, but they could only stop them so many times; you give an NFL offense enough chances they're gonna put up points (except ours of course).

But it certainly has been offensive.
