Yikes!
Funny that the lighter car pretty much obliterated the heavier one. But with the advancements in technology, it makes all the difference in the world.

I was surprised and more than thankful for my good fortune of surviving my childhood in the tail fin days of automobiles. Although I figured the occupants would be safer in the 2009, I was under impression that the old car would stand up better in regards to body structure.

There are a lot more tools available to engineers today.
Computer modeling something called finite element analysis allows you to make a strong part at minimal weight. That and crumple zone / safety shell concepts make today's cars much safer.
engineers in the late 50's were lucky to have a slide rule, when in question, they put more mass at a problem. But mass does not equal strength.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Wait,, I thought that government intervention was a bad thing.. good thing we didn't deregulate the Auto Industry If only we'd have done the same thing with lending institutions and other financial houses....

I have to agree with you there!
No doubt the new Bu is much better in a crash, but I wonder how a brand new '59 bel air that wasn't rusted to pieces would fare, and i wonder if that classic had a motor in it... hard to tell.

Theres actually only about a 100 pounds of difference between the 2 cars. Most people tend to think of newer as being lighter. But cars on avg are becoming increasingly heavier year after year.

It is bad, very very bad. We need to abolish all gov intrusions like air traffic control, public libraries, roads & schools. Everyone knows they're all a miserable waste of tax dollars.

From a personal standpoint, I never liked the 59 Chevy.. Now, if they'd have done that to a 57, I'd have a fit....
