As I sat watching the Browns get absolutely destroyed by the Ravens yesterday I had thoughts of all the coaches we have passed on while pursuing Lerner's Belicheck fantasy.
Let's start with Rex Ryan.... has the Jets looking awesome with not a bunch more talent than the Browns have or had prior to manginas arrival.
Next Harbaugh has shaped the Ravens into a legit superbowl contender.
Mike Singletary- He has the 49ers playing their collective asses off.
Sean Peyton- Ok that goes back a few years but I am looking at the beginning of the Romeo years.
Mike Shanahan- If we had hired him do you think we would have only one offensive TD this year?
Marty Shottenhiemer- Say what you want but his teams play well and are competitive. What have we done since he left?
Mike Tomlin comes to mind. Do you think he would be better than Romeo or mangini?
Feel free to add your passovers to the list.
We have passed on some excellent coaches and hired some bums. I can only hope it doesnt take three long years to get rid of the latest BB wannabe.

Scott Pioli/Todd Haley. Maybe we should also include the coaches fans have run out of town: Bill Bellicheck Bruce Arians ...

Ahh, sweet... another 20/20 Hindsight thread that assumes that any success these guys might have had is exactly what we missed out on... ya know, because it is just a single piece to the puzzle that we've got wrong and if we just changed that one magic piece everything will just get better.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

While reading the threads on here today I had to make a run to the local Army Surplus store because the stench from the whining and moaning has gotten unbearable. (I've smelled pig farms with less stench) I am now committed to wearing a gas mask while reading the whine and moan threads of what we have done wrong. Purp....glad I had the gas mask on cuz I could smell the sarcasm 700 miles away.

not only that but completely ignoring that some guys on the list weren't available (Singletary...he was interim coach of SF last season and they just removed the interim tag).....
some coaches chose not to come here (Cowher...as he will get mentinoed).....
and some coaches had stated intentions to have a year off football and wouldn ot step into this mess (Shanahan)
here are the biggest names technically available right now and where I would guess they end up next year:
Shanahan - Cowboys. It's almost a foregone conclusion here in TX no matter what Philips does. He could win the superbowl and be shown the door. Shanny is learning the 3-4 defense and the spread offense in his time off. The two things that Jerry loves and demands with the Cowboys.
Cowher - Carolina. It's where he lives, they have "his" type of team except they look to be taking a step back this season despite a high talent level. I love John Fox, but he is on the hot seat.
Gruden - Washington. Wouldn't be surprised if he stayed at home in Florida (still lives there) with JAX....but I think his ego wants the bigger market and bigger named team. Snyder will be willing to pony up the $$$ and let Gruden hand-pick his 1st round QB also could be enticing.
Holmgren - SD. I think he stays retired...but it's not like Norv's job security is high and they have a talented team that could hit the next level with Holmgren orchestrating that offense.

I'd rather not. I don't live in the past.. Hindsight is always 20/20 vision.
I'm more concerned about where we go from here.
And certainly,, you have to remember.,. the team sucked last season. Mangini didn't exacly inherit a winner. so three games into the season, and people are wasting time putting up threads like this one.
PURP,, you hit it on the head.. and Atomic,, there are lots of folks ordering Whine this week

If John Fox is let go, and we fire Mangini (not saying I want to), but if we do... I'd LOVE to have John Fox.

We didn't run Bill Belichick out of town. He was coach when Modell announced the move, and assumed he was going to be coach for the Baltimore Browns. Art Modell decided not to keep him, post-move.

I was one of them ... I couldn't stand the guy. Still can't stand him. I was wrong about whether he could coach or not, which is understandable since he basically stunk here, except for 1994 ( and even in '94 he managed to lose to Pittsburgh three times). I have seen the statement about us "running BB out of town" several times on this board, and its revisionist history. Art Modell ran him out of Baltimore.

If only,if only, if only.
Speculation aint gonna change a thing. But I'll toss one out for you:
If only Art Modell and Mike White/council didn't get into a stadium pissing match!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your list:
Let's start with Rex Ryan.... has the Jets looking awesome with not a bunch more talent than the Browns have or had prior to manginas arrival. Mangini had the Jets at 8-3 last year until Bret "I-won't-come-out-of-a-game-even-to-save-my-team" Favre got hurt and threw away four of the last five games.
Next Harbaugh has shaped the Ravens into a legit superbowl contender. Harbaugh didn't shape crap. He also didn't exactly inherit a talentless team. They still had one of the top defenses in football. They added a QB and never looked back. Plus, he was not available when we were hiring.
Mike Singletary- He has the 49ers playing their collective asses off. I'll give you this, Singletary willed his guys into playing on fire. But he wasn't available when we were looking to hire.
Sean Peyton- Ok that goes back a few years but I am looking at the beginning of the Romeo years. You give Peyton a GM who provides "Z" when he asks for "A" and you'll see the same results. You provide Peyton with a GM who undermines and takes control of the coaches decisions and you'll see the same results.
Mike Shanahan- If we had hired him do you think we would have only one offensive TD this year? Shanahan was not available.
Marty Shottenhiemer- Say what you want but his teams play well and are competitive. What have we done since he left? Marty was not available.
Mike Tomlin comes to mind. Do you think he would be better than Romeo or mangini? Another coach who inherited a boatload of talent. Who couldn't work with that?
Others inherited a team with plenty of talent and had recently been successful unlike the Browns situation. The only coach remotely doing well after inheriting the likes of the Browns is Singletary and he wasn't available to us.
So, I'm asking, did this thread have a point?

Come on man, he's a newbie and he's venting.
There are about 20 other posts this could have been attached to, but the newebie has a point - we're an unlucky group of fans.

Some of the coaches you mentioned werent even available. But one question, if the Browns continue to look this bad where the players dont look like they are willing to go all out to play for him, does Lerner fire this regime after one year? It might cost the team money but so does not selling tickets. Heck, Marty Shottenheimer only lasted one year in Washingon and he had an 8 game winning streak to close out the season. Oakland had coaches for 1 year. I dont remember how long Kiffen and Spurrier lasted.

Yeah you're right. I'm just getting tired of all the venting I guess. If we want to complain about about a bad coaching decision... WE FIRED PAUL BROWN!!

Well...ol' Paul Brown's last years in Cleveland weren't all too good. I might get flamed for this, but I think Modell made a good decision to axe him.
Hell, he couldn't even get the Bengals to win a Super Bowl.

And isn't Tomlin basically working with most of the same staff that Cowher had?

He's missing Wiesnhut and the other guy that went with him to Arizona (russ Grimm).. but I think the rest is still there.. He promoted Ariens to OC and the DC remained the same I believe.
So did the bulk of the players.. So, all in all, Tomlin was winning with Cowhers players and coaches.
3 years into it, we see a ... in the armor a little. they are not 1-2.. But that could be as simple as missing Polumula (sp) I have a feeling that TD pass at the end by Palmer doesn't happen if Troy is in the game.. Just a guess however.

j/c....
I think the thing EVERYONE is missing is that a coach does not make the team!, but only manages the game, if the player's do not run the right route, or sceem, is it the coache's fault?...A coach can only do so much, the player's have to do the rest......Now dont get me wrong here, there are som bad decision's made by coach's and if they dont understand the game, then they will alway's do that. I guess what im getting at is the player's have to take responsability at some point. no?

One losing season since '99 3 Championships & 1 Super Bowl & we LOST em ALL OF COURSE....we would be bitchin' like Philly fans

Do you believe McNabb would have developed into who he is if he was on an expansion team?

McNabb would have been an assistant offensive coach at Syracuse 4 years ago if we would have drafted him.

I love hindsight drafts... let me play!!!... Our first round picks could have been... 1999- Donovan McNabb 2000- Lavar Arrington 2001- LaDanian Tomlinson 2002- Ed Reed 2003- Nnamdi Asmougha 2004- Roy Williams (WR) 2005- DeMarcus Ware 2006- Antonio Cromartie 2007- Joe Thomas (won't trade that pick lol) 2008- Chris Johnson 2009- Too early to say who we should have taken. We could have been sweet!

Topdawg, Arrington wouldnt even speak to the Browns. The Browns wanted a contract done before the pick and when they went to speak to Arrington, he wouldnt talk to them and said he soesnt want to play there. I think Washington had something to say to him by saying they will take him #2 and pay him well if he dont go to Cleveland. It Washington was smart, they would have picked Samuals with the 2nd pick because o-lineman are cheaper then Arrington but I think Washington already gave Arrington a commitment before the draft if the Browns went with Courtney Brown.
Also, I was disappointed that the Browns passed over Marvin Lewis twice for Palmer and Davis. I think Lewis would be doing much better without Mike Brown penny pinching and making personnel decisions.

Maybe,,,??? If we had hired Andy Reid in '99, I'm sure alot of things would be different. The '98 Eagles weren't much better than our exp. team
There's a guy here on campus that is retired from the Cowboys & 49ers personnel offices, and in one of our discussions he said they (49ers) almost fell out of there chairs when we hired Palmer. Along with they knew D. Clark would suck as an office man. I stick w/ the Bill Walsh stories & his philosphies on football in our talks anymore. More informative& less painful, ecspecially before the season he told me not to get my hopes up high for our old ballboy, now coach.

Yeah, which includes our very own Bruce Ariens whom nearly everyone on this board wanted run out of town because he sucked as an offensive coordinator.
Which is just one more reason to take all the know-it-all negativity on here with a grain of salt.

Even if we had a team of thugs, if we just won some damn games it would be okay with me. It really would.
