I was thinking yesterday about some of my old, more obscure TV favorites of years gone by.

Firefly: I actually found this series on DVD at Best Buy yesterday. This was about a group of people ..... many of whom had been on the losing side of a galactic war .... (all human, by the way) and now trying to make it in the outer fringe of the galaxy. It was an old western set on a space ship .... along with a train heist ..... bar fights .... smuggling ..... a "companion" (a high priced, and very respected prostitute) and all the other things that make life interesting. I wonder where the show would have wound up if they'd had more than 1 season.

LEXX: The LEXX was a sentient spaceship. It was actually alive .... and followed the orders of whoever possessed the key. (which merged with the person until they gave it up) Oh ... it also had to ingest last quantities of matter for fuel ... so blowing up a moon ...planet .. or asteroid wasn't out of the question when the gas guage ran low. There was the killer love slave .... in love with the undead "divine assassin" who had no emotion, and couldn;t care less about affection, love, or lust .... the captain who was always trying to get rich ... get laid .... or get away ......oh .. and did I mention that there was also a robot .. who was also in love first with the love slave ..... then with the undead guy (while plotting to knock off the love slave "competitor") ...... It was just a strange, weird, and bizzare.

Sliders: This got some play ... and actually lasted 4 seasons .... somehow. The first 2 seasons are really the only ones worth mentioning, as they destroyed the group ..... fubarred the stories .... and generally wrecked the series trying to get the show to catch on. Sliders travelled through wormholes to different alternate realities by virtue of a "timer". They could spend 5 minutes on a world ..... or 5 days. Unfortunately ..... the timer malfunctioned and the sliders were lost in alternate universe after alternate universe. Many closely resembled home ..... but there was always that one difference somewhere ...... a living dead relative ..... the President not being the same person ..... driving on the wrong side of the road .... etc., that always let them (and the viewer) know that their journey was not at an end. They would even sometimes meet twisted and distorted versions of themselves and/or their fellow sliders. It was a really great premise ..... and was a well done show for the first couple of seasons.

So what are some of your favorites that no one knows ..... but might remember?

Wow, toss one in the wheelhouse..

Since you started out in the Sci Fi genre I'll stick to it. (BTW -Firefly is on my all time favorites list. You know that the movie "Serenity" is a follow up, right?).

Space 1999 - you can get the entire series in a 19 disc mega set on Ebay for about $40

Earth 2 - mid 90's series where an "earthlike planet" is being colonized.

The original Battlestar Galactica from the 70's - but I'm guessing you've seen it.

V- was mentioned above. Made for TV series in the 80's that was interesting but also bogged down with typical 80's "thin characters" that didn't always convince you. Careful which ones you get as there was the original mini series that was the best and then two follow ups that stunk pretty bad.

Airwolf- 80's TV series with a mega souped up attack helicopter that flies around the world blowing bad guys up. Story lines comperable to the "Six Million Dollar Man".

There are also two "pre-LEXX" movies that spawned the LEXX series. I can't remember the title exactly but something like "Tales from an Alternate Universe" or something like that.

One more thought for you- CBS.com has several old series that you can watch on line. An old western from the 50's is "Have Gun Will Travel" which I enjoyed.

Twin Peaks is there as well.

The "Mission Impossible" series from the 60's are some of the smartest spy shows I've ever seen. Plots that you don't completelty figure out until the very end.

Maverick from the 50's was a good light hearted western series starring a young James Garner.

Fury starring Peter Graves (before he went on to Mission Impossible) and
Highway Patrol with Broderick Crawford were a couple of my favorites.

I'll have to check out the CBS site. All I recall about Have Gun Will Travel was that it starred Richard Boone.

Before there was Airplane & sequels, and Naked Gun & sequels, there was a TV show called Police Squad, starring Leslie Nielson. It was produced by the same people (Zanuck? Zucker?) and was hilarious. Lt. Frank Drebbin was the character that went!on to Naked Gun fame.

Then there's my all-time favorite series, The Rockford Files. It was a great combination of humor, action, and suspense starring James Garner.

Oh Yeah,, Highway Patrol was great.. same with Have Gun Will Travel and one of the best cop shows was Naked City.

I can remember the tag line to Naked City: There are a million stories in the Naked City, this is just one of them... Ha ha,,

It's funny when you think about it but the original Star Trek only ran for 3 years and had 79 episodes before being cancelled.. Given the success of the franchise through the years, I find that amazing.

77 Sunset Strip was pretty darn cool also..

Does anyone remember The Millionaire.. A show about a millionaire that would give 1 mill away...

The Rifleman and also Zorro... I loved those shows.. Man am I showing my age now or what

I was "Time Tunnel" kid! I love history and that show flipped my switch!!!

Others:

"Roll Out" black supply truck drivers from the Red Ball Express in WWII starring Stu Gilliam and Garret Morris I think.

"The Manhunter" starring Ken Howard...70's vigilante thriller about a guy going around hunting down criminals after his buddies death at the hands of criminals.

Crap I could think of 4 or 5 more if I tried!

I loved Police Squad. Man ..... I'd forgotten all about that one.

I think that Quantum Leap probably took a lot of inspiration from Time Tunnel.

For those that said Firefly...heck for those that did not....

FARSCAPE

One of the best SCI FI shows of all time....if you decide to give it a try...just know that it does take a few episodes to really get into it.

A buddy of mine kept telling me I had to watch it...and he gave me season 1 on DVD to watch....I watched EP 1....and thought..wow...this is what he wants me to watch.....so then went on to EP 2...EP 3....while I was doing other things...by EP 4...I was like.....whats going on now....so I started over...and LOVED every second. I think its a show that you enjoy so much more once you get to know all the characters.....and it takes awhile to know all the players.

a few more

THE UNIT - CBS just canceled...but it was a very good show
FRINGE - New show in season 2....imagine X-files meets Lost
TOUR OF DUTY - 80's Vietnam War show
FIREFLY - already mentioned...but a shame it died way to soon
BURN NOTICE - USA show about a former spy dealing with being fired
PSYCH - USA show...on after MONK(also good) It was the Mentalist before there was a Mentalist(also good) Guy pretends to be a psychic while solving crimes...very fun buddy comedy....that makes fun of itself along the way.

Does Arrested Development count?

I know it generated a cult following after it was canceled but I don't think it was well known while it was on.

Well .... I had never even remembered hearing of this show ..... until a friend of mine started raving about it. She said it would be right up my alley ...... you know ... the twisted, head spinning, have no clue until you do kinda stuff .....

It sounded like a "chick" series ..... so I basically ignored it.

The show is "Dollhouse". This show is a trip. Reprogramming people to be whatever you want or need ...... Kinda scary stuff .... since, if the technology was actually available .... someone would pay ... and someone would use it.

"Combat," with Vic Morrow as Sgt Saunders. Some really horrible storywriting, but a lot of fun to catch other actor cameoes -- Telly Savalas, etc,...

The Lieutenant, LittleJohn, Kirby, Cage -- these guys all disappeared after the series was over. I know Jason Hanson committed suicide,....

"Baa Baa, Black Sheep" with Robert Conrad, was as comical as it was military serious.

I'd like to see that series again, unfortunately the DVD are abnormally expensive compared to other series.

Wow, Seaquest, I had forgotten about that one! Loved it as a kid.

Also, Dollhouse has not only a bunch of SciFi show escapee's like Tahmoh Penikett, but is written and directed by Joss Whedon of Firefly acclaim Just got into this show and think it's decent. Not as great as firefly was, and could've been, but not a bad hours distraction either.

FarScape was great too. Kind of like how I would envision Star Trek on LSD ...

The Rifleman

The Job........Dennis Leary was absolutely hilarious, they cancelled it pretty quick, and then came out with Rescue Me. I love Rescue Me, but the Job was one of the funniest shows I ever saw.

Not sure, but I used to watch it on Comedy Central, in the days before they had the Daily Show, the Colbert report and South Park.

From Wiki Wiki Link

The show premiered in 1989, both on CBC in Canada and on HBO. The CBC aired the show through its entire run. Seasons 1-3 aired on HBO but, in the fall of 1992, CBS picked up the rights to the show and aired it on late-night Fridays showing repeats, while HBO was airing the last of the season 3 episodes. In early 1993, all-new episodes of The Kids In The Hall aired on CBS late-night, making the start of season 4. The last two seasons aired there until the show ended in late 1994.

Freaks and Geeks
Produced by Judd Apatow and starring Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jason Segel and a few other actors and actresses that have also gone on to bigger fame in Hollywood. It aired between the 1999–2000 television season. Eighteen episodes were completed, but the series was canceled after only twelve were aired.

I thought it was really good. Actually reminded me of my years in highschool as a runt and a bit if a geek.

You have to start the Wire from the beginning IMO....I was told about it late...and tried to watch a random episode around Season 2...and really could care less what was going on.....

Then just recently I decided to give it another try...and watched all 4 seasons back to back on DVD in less than 4 weeks...I was completely addicted.

little-known shows:

The Prisoner
Rod Serling's Night Gallery
My World- and Welcome To It
Johnny Quest (late 60's cartoon)
Street Legal (80's law show from Canada)
Max Headroom- 20 Minutes Into the Future
The Unit (CBS did this show dirt. Originally aired on Friday nights, they moved it around until it landed on Sundays- where it was always bumped around by late-finishing football games. Loyal fans chased it around as best they could, but ratings suffered... and the show was dropped after 3 seasons. Good writing, compelling characters, good acting. A real shame.)

I'm sure I'll come up with more, but these are the ones I can remember without too much effort tonight.

BTW- anyone else bummed to see 'Monk' closing shop?

I really liked the first season of the wire, but then kind of lost interest in season 2. I really like most of the HBO shows. True Blood is my favorite show right now.
