Its was about time the Super Bowl had someone that knows how to deliever the goods. Don't know about you guys/gals,but Prince nailed it tonight.
He was so unpredictable with his choice of songs.
Only a genius like him could pull off a a medley of "Proud Mary", "All Along the Watchtower" ,"Baby I'm a Star"......
Then he goes throws everyone a curveball by doing that Foo Fighters song, which sounded better than the Fighters version....
yet Dave Grohl and the Fighters just butchered "Darling Nikki"
How cool was it him doing "Purple Rain" in the rain...
Alot of musical acts should take a look at Prince and see how its done...
His guitar tone is off the charts.....funny thing though, the drums and keyboards weren't mixed all that well.....
amazing amazing guitar player.....
He just buries the Justin Timber-Fakes and Janet Jackson's of the world.....

Definitely one of the better performances for a halftime show.

Better than any of the garbage that is popular these days.

I'm not a prince fan by any means, but he entertained the crowd....in a downpour. I'll give him props for that.

What colour was the rain?

I too found the title of this thread disappointingly misleading.

Prince was very good. I was glad to see some great quality half time entertainment.

I love Prince and I thought he was disappointing. What about all his awesome original songs? The dancers were very distracting too.

I thought he was great. I've always been a fan, especially back in the 80's. I used to have his movie "Purple Rain"....don't know what happened to it.

He puts on an amazing show.

He is a great guitar player but I can't help but think about a thin Aunt Jemima when I see that guy.

Can't say I like Prince's music but I respect his talent. However it was better than watching a tired old Rolling Stones performance.

A good show at halftime... something we aren't guaranteed. Ever.

Prince delivered the goods on time like FedEx... and it wasn't one of his more memorable sets. Just goes to show how lame some of the past shows have been. Li'l dude nailed the tunes, and never allowed that downpour to distract him. A real pro's pro. I was impressed.

And to the poster who's reminded of Aunt Jemimah... sorry, I just don't see it. It would take 3.5 Princes to even start resembling her. Get past the head wrap, please.

They were playing that medley on the Stern show on Sirius all last week. Apparently, Prince's people sent Stern the tape and asked him to play it on the air, then discuss if he and his crew felt Prince would play it during the half time show. Just a ploy to garner interest, and Howard kinda busted them on it.

Unfortunately, I missed it due to party festivities....

They were talking this morning on the show about the guitar solo on Purple Rain - and felt Prince pulled back on some notes because the guitar was out of tune. The way the guitar is made - would be hard to not hit it somehow, and the weather and humidity made it hard to be in tune. The acoustics in the stadium did not help either.

Prince is one of the greta guitarists though. There was a list just released a few weeks ago of the 100 greatest guitar solos.....forget where Prince fell in it though...

I thought it was a great half-time performance, especially for Prince to not be even slightly phased by the rain and still be able to get the crowd into it all!

(I'd also like to know what hair products those dancers used, because their hair still looked rockin' in the downpour, not to mention what the secret is to dancing in killer heels on a wet surface and not wiping out! If that were me, I would have wiped out at least 6 or 7 times, so kudos to them!!)

I'm not a Prince fan, but I thought he did a great job. I was really impressed with his guitar playing - I never thought he was as good as he is. He's not a GREAT guitar player, but he was smokin' last night.

Didn't they at some time years ago have championship rounds of Punt Pass and Kick for the kids?
I realize that Super Bowl is all about the bucks and ratings but I'd prefer to see Prince and Michael Jackson in a "Cage match" to the end...if they are going to be performing.

I would have a better idea of how good the show was had I turned off my streaming radio so I could hear the halftime show. But from what I did see and hear....he kicked ass out there in the rain. I was very impressed with that. Most performers would have cancelled due to the weather or made themselves total asses whining about it. Props to the little dude with the attitude.....great performance by him. (wish more would take a page out of his book and play rain or shine, warm or cold, dry or snow.)

I googled it - couldn't find the one they discussed on the Stern show (it was from one of the leading guitar magazines, Guitar World). I remembered Eruption being #2 though - so I think it was close....

Here is where that came from:

2.
song: Eruption (YES, the guy influenced millions of guitarists)

3.
song: Freebird (NO!!! This solo sucks and is a bore)
guitarist: Collins/Rossington

4.
song: Comfortably Numb (YES, this solo is awesome)
guitarist: David Gilmour

5.
song: All Along the Watchtower (YES)
guitarist: Jimi Hendrix

6.
song: November Rain (NO.... this guy is so over-rated)
guitarist: Slash

7.

Triumph guitarist Rik Emmett's solo on Rock 'n Roll Machine (live version) is as good as any on this list. Jazz, classical, volume swells, all the tricks, lightning technique...). he's a master.

I give a lot of credit to Prince!

I have never been a big Prince fan.............but last night impressed me!

He rocked that stadium................loved the lights and the stage set-up!

I loved the song selections..............and he threw in a Hendrix song as well.

So much better then watching the burnt out Stones............Maria Carie, Micheal Jackson (or any other Jackson), any of the boy bands, and even McCartney!

It is going to be hard to beat this show next year.......................I wish that would be one of the goals for the Super Bowl.................try to improve on the halftime show every year.............I mean try really had to make it better every year!

We do not need the Rolling Stones every other year...............they were one of the best in their prime...............but that was twenty some odd years ago!

I'm sure that is a goal. The problem is with a hundred million viewers, of all ages, races, backgrounds, etc.... it's impossible to please them all... They could have one next year that I think is better and you might think it's a step backwards....

I thought it was great too because I fast-forwarded through the whole thing. DVR is a God-send!!!

My wife and I didn't start watching the game until about 9:00 and we were done with the game (and stopped to watch a few commercials, too) at about 10:40 or so.

I thought it was terrible.... The tone of his guitar was far from great. His best song, Purple Rain wasn't even performed that good. It's a shame to see someone life Prince stealing the half-time performance from some of the great talents we have out there today. I am not talking about your Aguilerras and Timberlakes and stuff like that. There is someone by the name of John Mayer who can deliver great lyrics and even better guitar playing. He can put on one hell of a show, and if it's covers you want...he can do anything from Hendrix to The Police right back to SRV. He is the closest we will hear to Clapton and so on in the mainstream While, many think he doesnt fit the mold of a half-time performance, I don't think Prince does either. There is some real talent out there in the world, we just have to find it and accept it. As much as I love Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Zeppelin, and Floyd, we all have to stop living in the past and make way for the future.
