Benard promoted to active roster
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
11.09.2009
The Browns have elevated undrafted rookie LB Marcus Benard from the practice squad to the active roster.

A defensive end at Jackson State, Benard made a splash in the Browns' preseason opener at Green Bay in August. He was released in early September as the Browns shaped their regular-season roster and re-signed to the practice squad.

His move to the active roster was announced Monday morning as the Browns returned from a long bye weekend and began preparations for next Monday's game with the Ravens.

Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini said Benard will play outside and David Veikune will continue to play inside, allowing both rookies the opportunity to concentrate on one spot.

QUICK HITS: Mangini said he'll announce his decision on the starting quarterback Wednesday...The Browns still have one open spot on the active roster. Mangini said the Browns will hold workouts for some free agents on Tuesday...Mangini said he'll know more on the status of injured linebacker Eric Barton either later today or tomorrow.

If it's not Quinn, I don't know if I can watch this team anymore this year.

I can't stand to watch Derek Anderson throw another pass for this team.

Yup, DA has had his shot and shown he's set back the QB position a few decades with his horrible play. Let's see what Brady can do. If he plays the same, then we toss in Ratliff, then Cribbs, then Cundiff, then......until we have no more games to play. I'm done with DA (and I was on the DA bandwagon after watching Brady stink up the joint to start the season).

I just don't know how Mangini can possibly go with DA. I just can't foresee a reason.

Seriously. Why name a starter now? It's not like the guy will need any time to fit into the position.

The fact that this pudgy little jerk didn't come out and name a starter even last week let alone waiting until wednesday shows he has no clue. He has not learned from his numerous mistakes as he said he would.

This guy is an absolute wreck of a person and a coach.

I have a bad feeling that he is going to march DA out there to start on national TV thereby exploding any stitch of respectability we still have (if there even is any). "We looked at the film and really like his ability to move the chains. What's that? He hasn't ever moved the chains? Yeah, we really like the fact that he might move the chains maybe sometime."

This is beyond embarrassing.

Ryan coaches for the remainder and we BEG anyone with at least a moderate knowledge of football to take over. My 13 year old daughter can steer this ship better than this clown.

There is none. We only weren't the worst ranked team last week because there was a team that hadn't won a game.

There isn't any left.

DA is damaged goods but he might get up to play this game as the Ratbirds let him go.

I'm convinced that it doesn't matter if he starts your 13 year old daughter, we are going to embarrass ourselves either way.

Trying to be optimistic I think Mangini starts Quinn against the same team that he benched Quinn halfway thru the game. When an improved Quinn comes out and beats the teams average QB rating by at least 20 points, Mangini will come out and say "thats why we benched Quinn, because he wasnt ready to run the offense and wasnt throwing downfield and by benching him he can see how we want him to throw down field more and be a more prepared QB down the road. In the long run thats what we thought we needed to do to make Quinn a better QB." If it works out that way, mangini wont look like he completely mishandled the QB situation.

There is no way in the world that even the most casual fan of football could come to any conclusion other than that piece of garbage we have as a head coach screwed up the QB position worse than anyone could ever have even remotely imagined in the history of the game.

He didn't screw up the position per say, but he sure did mishandle it in preseason and arguably during the season.

To "screw up" a position would indicate taking something solid and ruining it. I haven't seen much of anything to suggest the position had much hope to begin with.

Regarding the QB's, as bad as Anderson has played, there can't be much of a choice other than to go back to Quinn.

Sooner or later we had to get Quinn back in there. Now is as good a time as any, considering how low Anderson has sunk.

Isn't that what he's doing?

He obviously knows who it's going to be. But he's not announcing it till Wednesday.

I hate you Eric Mangini.

I've been as big of a BQ supporter as just about anybody.. but I don't think making a change at this point is going to somehow spark life into this team... I'm just praying for no more injuries.

I want to see Quinn again too, but Baltimore really needs to get turned around to stay in the hunt with the Steelers and Bengals,....they trash us on Monday Night Football.

Well you can't breathe life into the dead but it will give us an opportunity to see if the kid is over his deer in the headlights look and see if he really can lead an offense. If nothing else it's a chance to revive his trade value. It certainly can't weaken it more.

I've just seen all of DA I want to see in my lifetime.

If the escalators are unachievable, I want Quinn in for the rest of the season. As bad as he looked, he has looked better before. It is imperative to see what we have with Quinn, if not for anything but trade value.

I wanted DA in when the switch was made, but I never want to see this guy in a Browns uniform again after this season. After seeing him smiling after throwing another INT, I'm done with him. What ever is said about Quinn, I can't imagine anybody as innacurate as DA has been. The guy is flat out done IMO.

As for Bernard, I think the guy has some talent, and I also think he's a sure tackler, bring him on, and let's see what we got, because next year LB is high on the needs list once again.

Another great statistic: Derek Anderson's 4th Quarter Passer Rating.....

Wait for it...wait for it.....

3.1

Ideally I'd like my QB to have a rating of more than pi.

Seriously, who does Mangini think he is? Did he not learn from his mistake the first time?

The Ravens could probably run a prevent defense the entire game and the Browns would still lose by 30 points.

This is my feeling. Hall misses too many assignments to be considered effective in the Mangini scheme. Same way with Robiskie.

Essentially you have to have a wonderlic score of 40 to play for him.

Your heart's in the right place, but I agree, you're over-reacting.
I'm not saying the state of our Browns is as bad as a tragedy like Sept. 11.

I'm saying it's worse.

Uninformed spew?

Would you care to elaborate on that, my friend?
