Does anybody here feel that after the disastrous 2006 season that organization realizes that it is going to take more than 5 years to get back to being able to compete for the division title? Baxter, Bentley, Tucker, McCutcheon all hurt. I dont expect any of them to play for the browns again but they may. Just looking at the above 4 positions, are they even what most of the fanbase is clamoring for in the draft. Does this scare the hell out of anyone else? What if we lose Hank Fraley?? I truly believe that this team has been bad so long that we as fans can no longer objectively evaluate where we stack up against the rest of the league.

no... next season is season #3... with a great offseason, we could have an avg. OL and DL, which would do wonders in terms of making us competitive...talent looks horrible all around when the lines are in shambles...then we're only decent QB play away from a 'Cincinnati winner' IMO (aka 8-8 )...
Browns fans are born with it...

Some of us can, but most don't want to know the truth, and choose to wear the Brown & Orange glasses. On O we still need 6 fulltime starters replaced BADLY............and that's if La can make it back. On D it's a bit better, and we only need 5 fulltime starters replaced immediatly...lol. That's basically 50% of our starting squad needs to be seriously upgraded, and then with a few breaks where back to respectability....lol. Folks we are at least another 2 years away, and perhaps 3. I don't think any team (including an expansion team) should be more than 5 years away with today's FA and the draft. You can completely turn your roster over in 5 years. If this FO hasn't taken steps to make this team a much better squad by year 5 then they need fired, because they aren't very good. What is hurting them though is the loud mouth idiots who where expecting the playoffs in year 2 of a complete rebuild...lol. Folks we are maybe half way through this, but to be more realistic it's still 3 years away.

I know where we are at in the process, but 5 years was palatable when we drafted Charlie, signed Baxter, signed Bentley.
It just seems some things we were counting on for awhile have fallen through.
I agree with the sentiment that good line play will affect everything else but I think we will get competetive and than have to go through another shorter down cycle before we make any noise. Too many holes.

I can. As an out of town dawg I get a real good idea how we stack up just talking to other people... if I don't already know.
Last year I predicted we would win 4 games. I don't bring that up for any reason other than to show I knew we sucked and weren't going to do well.

I dont doubt it Peen. Reading some of the stuff on this board gets to be a little much sometimes though, being able to take of the rose titned glasses is tough for some because they want for things to be good. Unfortunately, this team is no better than it was in 1999, and I say that becuase at least we had the prospect of extra draft picks then.

I've always believed, and still do,that we won't have a clue what we do or don't have untill we build our lines.
I mean IF Charlie didn't "hear footsteps" and feel he had to run for his life all the time? If he actually had enough faith in his OL to protect him and could build some type of "confidence level" would he be better? I think so. Not an all-pro,but better.
If Ruben could get those "first few steps" to build up a little steam, would he be more productive? I think so. Not all-pro,but servicable.
If we could stop the run on any consistant basis,or get enough pressure that the oposing QB couldn't pick us apart, would we win more games? I think so. Not a SB team, but much more competative and at least a 50/50 chance to win those close games we always seem to come out on the short end of.
It's hard to accurately evaluate where you are when your trenches are in shambles. By doing this from 99 untill now,we've had lots of QB's,RB's WR's and none seem to be able to get the job done with any consistancy.
So hopefully,THIS TIME,we'll put first things first, instead of keeping that revoling door swinging.

What gets me is some people thinking that a "franchise QB or RB" will all of the sudden make this team an instant winner....it won't. Besides, I'm still not convinced that there is a true franchise QB in this draft anyways. Now Peterson could be a franchise type RB? However, our lines are in such a sad state that this is where we need to focus. IF we do enough in FA then maybe we could bring in an RB in the draft but I don't think we will do well enough in FA to warrant picking a RB with our 3 or 4 slot. I'm not one who really thinks Frye is the QB to ever lead us to a S.B. but after seeing the Bears get there with Grossman as QB then anything is possible but there is NO chance of that happening until we build the lines. If Thomas is gone when we pick then I think we should take Branch or trade down for more picks, as there is good talent to be had in the late first and early second also. The only bpa, if Thomas is gone, that would make any sense to me would be Calvin Johnson, I say this because fans and media seem to be in rare agreement that he is as close to a sure thing as you will find. Plus, drafting him may light a fire under B.E's.....feet. As for the other injured players....I'm still holding out hope that Bentley will return, Cutch is probably reduced to depth, Baxter is most likely done, and Tucker is a question mark. Our D is not that far from being respectable, however, the O has a ways to go before it catches up.

This is one of those threads that always gets me in trouble because I'm basically an optimist. It does make me wonder sometimes if we will ever turn the corner. Things do appear pretty hopeless at the moment I have to admit. Lots of injuries have caused a number of unknowns.. Will we have Bentley back? Can Baxter ever play again? Will Cutch recover? And So On and So On. Really if you focus on those, you wouldn't find it easy to think that we could get it done in the next 3 years.. Let me ask this... was the 5 year plan devised to make us into a contender or to win a Superbowl? If it's to make us a contender, yeah, I think it's very doable.. To get us to the Superbowl and win it, That I would have to say is a long shot. But that's JMO,,,,

Ah, PitDawg, finally someone who maybe can see the forest and also the trees. EVERYTHING revolves around the lines, both offensive and defensive. You have a young QB, still learning to make his progressions, young wide receivers who don't know the routes, a running back that is just adequate, not a burner, and you cannot get your change of pace back in because you are constantly on max protect and he cannot block. Now is the time to fix the lines, especially the OL. It happens EVERY YEAR, people yell during the season the season to FIX THE OL, then when the draft comes around it is always take the RB, take the QB, take the wide receiver. If we don't fix the line, it doesn't make two hoots in hell how many glamour players you get, if you don't have someone to block, nothing will happen but your QB and RB's will get injured. Same with the defensive line. Fix that and your LB's and CB's will improve. Just my opinion though.
Hope springs eternal in the heart of a true Browns fan. GO BROWNS!!!!!

There is no 5 year plan. In fact I remember Romeo saying 3 years is all you get and that usually translates to 2 years.
We tried to buy wins last year when we overpaid for guys like big ted and Willie McGinnest. All that did was set us back even more.

Let us follow our Free Agency moves and our drafting scheme before we assume we will be horrible again. I am not predicting a division champiosnhip but I do believe that we will be stronger next year and that the Ravens and Bungles will fall a bit.
When you have such a horrible season it doesn't take much to change your winning percentage and lift some hopes.

Rab...It cannot be ALL OL or nuttin'...Can't work that way bub...
If Thomas and or Quinn are there WE MUST TAKE EM'...Only because Thomas is worth it...NO WAY do we go Levi Brown this high just cause he's an O-Lineman...
There are many many ways to build the trenches and STILL get a potential STUD at another position...Ala Peterson...
If I'm Savage and Quinn is there...I trade down to about 7 and let Minny have Johnson and snag Peterson ahead of Houston...
Go Browns!!!

I think the team is better than 1999... We have Tight End...Line Backers...Safeties...some depth at Conerback....and possibly so-so wide receivers... that is if Brababy can get his head out of his rear.... Much better than 1999.....
Picking OL, DL and depth (rounds 5, 6, 7) at RB, CB, WR....we could be in shape to go .500 next year. Last year, I predicted 4 wins...maybe, with luck, as many as 6. Unfortunately, we had too many injuries and no luck...

This is a pivotal year. IMO we need to show HUGE and I mean HUGE improvement on the field and in record.
We can't have another talent infusion with lackluster results. This is the year Braylon, Kam, Jackson, Williams, Pool, Kellen and even Charlie need to emerge as quality players and superstars.
That first draft needs to show some results, that second one needs to continue to emerge as a quality class, and our 3rd draft needs to be as good as the 2nd draft.
We need to be ready to be knocking on the door of the playoffs this year. I'm not talking playoffs, I'm talking meaningful football in December whether we get there or not. Anything less and Romeo won't be here.
That's not being impatient, it's merely stating the truth. If a program isn't turning the corner at year 3, something is wrong and I don't think it's the GM.

i agree that this next season is a pivotal one...
the Browns need to become a threat in the AFC North.. when that happens.. then everyone will see the turn around.. but until we can actually compete for the top spot in the AFC north.. its gonna be sad for a long long time..
I have faith in RAC though.. regardless of what most say.. he does have what it takes to guide/ lead this team to victory.

Then your dead wrong. The GM signs and brings in the talent, and so far the talent he's brought in hasn't been up to snuff.........Vince Lombardi couldn't win with this group of has beens and never where's. It wasn't RAC who drafted BE, Poole, and Frye (all of whom have shown little so far to believe they are long term answers). It wasn't RAC who signed past their primers like Druzzi, Ted, and Willie in short cost saving contracts. It wasn't RAC who signed Baxter, Schaffer and others to big deals and then got little if any bang for their buck. Phil is responsible for all of this mess, and if you truly believe that this team should be competitive next year then he's the guy you want to blame. Personally, I knew when they took over and gutted the team (and it needed gutting) that it was going to be 5 years before we got to the point where you are talking about. However, if you are disatisfied with the results next year the guy you want to get rid of is Savage, becasue he's the one that has made the mistakes and assembled a team that like I said Vinnie Lombardi himself couldn't reach .500 with.

Wow..you can't blame Phil because the guys he brought in got hurt. Atleast he made an attempt to fix as many holes as he could. I personally like what Savage has done so far. Have all of his draft picks panned out? No. Have some of them panned out? So far. He did a great job in the 2006 draft and he did decent in the 2005 draft if you consider how much time he had to evaluate the team and then all of the players. As far as his FA signings he brought in quality people. Are some past their primes? Sure. I think we need to keep Savage around for a while. RAC's job is to coach and while the verdict is still out he doesn't seem to be doing a very good job.

You're right about RAC, he can get it done, and he can get it done his way. Just take a look at Tony Dungy, he's doesn't show any fire, but then again, he does have Payton Manning.

RAC can do it!! I wish the media would just leave him alone.. Him being on the hot seat, and all this other talk about Cowher.. GET REAL!! Just let the man coach..
and can a QB just snap out of a slump and become "kinda a big deal".. lol.. May be one day we can say hey.. atleast we have Charlie Frye!!

I'm not saying Romeo is a bad coach at this moment. I'm just saying if we add more individual pieces to the puzzle that continue to prosper, but the overall team looks the same, Romeo will be the one to take the fall.
It's usually how it is in the NFL. GM gets a mulligan on a coach.

ASSASSIN...
maybe the time from competitive to 'making noise' (assuming you mean capable of reaching SB) will be another period of delay...some teams seem to always be competitive and never get over the hump (Jags, Dolphins, Packers, Cowboys in recent memory)...but your original post was suggesting that Browns fans don't have a clue how bad the team is...and my only point was that yes, it is one of the worst in the league, BUT the margin between the worst and middle of the pack is fairly small, and IMO we'll make that jump with the things i talked about...
and i'm not sure that we all (Savage included) were counting on Charlie to be THE answer...i was personally hoping for a capable enough starter to be a 3 year placehoilder for a franchise QB to be drafted AFTER bigger needs were met...the other 2 are just injuries...i don't see the point worrying about those moves...they were both good players that may or may not come back, but that's not a fault in the building of this team...
MOURG...
actually, Phil HAS said they had a 5 year plan...not sure about Romeo...he probably said 3 b/c that's all that HC's usually get...and while i'm not a conspiracy theorist, believing that Phil is setting RAC up to be fired, he has a more important concern than ensuring Romeo is successful by year 3, and that is the talent level and sustainability of the team...
BWS...
if you knew that is was going to take 5 years to field a good team, then why would you expect results in terms of Ws by year 3?...how does a new home look half-way through being built?...if you're looking for Ws in year 3 of a gut & rebuild process, you're looking at the wrong thing...
and there are arguments to be made about how best to build a team, and whether Savage's philosophy will work, but are you honestly saying that Savage hasn't upped the talent level? since the O is our bigger concern, i'll just post it:
2004 2-deep.....................v.................2006 2-deep
QB: Garcia, Holcomb..........>...............Frye, Anderson RB: Suggs, Green.............=.................Droughns, Harrison FB: Smith, Bowers...........=.................Smith, Vickers WR: Bryant, Q..................<.................Braylon, Northcutt WR: Davis, Northcutt........<................JJ, Cribbs LT: Verba, Chambers.........=...............Shaffer, Dorsey LG: Demar, Beasley............<...............Druzzi, Friedman C: Faine, Fowler..............<...................Bentley, Fraley RG: Garmon, Zukauskas........<............Coleman, Matua RT: Tucker, Gonzales..........=..............Tucker, Butler TE: Winslow, Heiden............=..............Winslow, Heiden
i took season-ending injuries out of the equation, b/c the point is about what squad the organization was planning on putting out there...and i'll be honest, that's not a lot of improvement on O...but still modestly better on the Oline and in the receiving core...the only potentially less talented group are the QBs...(BTW, that's 3 years of talent aquisition by Butch and Garcia, only 2 by Savage)...
Savage hasn't lit this team on fire with his O picks, and improvement over a terrible 'GM' shouldn't be the only measuring stick, but it's heading in the right direction at least...
if you want me to so the same comparison with the D's, i'll do it, but i think we all know today's D is more talented than the 04 squad...
Browns fans are born with it...

Looking at that list it's hard to say we're any better at all, especially considering three years of picks and $100 million in FA.
The QB position is clearly much worse and the RB position is better. Other than that it all looks like a wash.
Phil and RAC's biggest mistakes have stemmed from trying to completely overhaul our scheme. Trying to impliment the 3-4 with the talent on the roster has proven to be a complete blunder.
It only got worse by shoving the few talented players we had out the door in favor of "improvements" (see Garcia, Faine, Bryant, etc).
They cleaned house for the sake of "cleaning house" and further depleted one of the least talented teams in the NFL.
And even more frightening is that now they're doing the same thing to the coaching staff..... Davidson, Rosburg........ It's inept.
Savage and RAC are lost, in over their heads, and grinding the team right into the ground. But hey, I'm an optimist.

I agree even though the thought of it is scary. We cant have another season like last season bad luck or not. Something has to give with the fortunes of this team.

Bro that Hateraide thats been floating around has finally caught up to you.. U well know that all those bums that Opie jettisoned were not marque players at all..they weren't worth anything.. What the heck did those guys do in the four years Botch had them? One year in the playoffs the other years 7-9, 4-10, 5-11..yet U wanted to keep those clowns? Look what just happened to Denver...all those ex-Browns brought in..people in here ACTUALLY crying that we dropped the ball and shoulda kep them..NOW they want those bums out..and they FIRED PATTERSON who brought them all in.. U well know the first year was a gut and patch job, and save MONEY ..thats where Druzzi, Coleman and the others came in..Druzzi wasn't a bad signing..but Coleman..no I wouldn't have..
U say the team needed gutting but they couldn' t replace them all with outstanding FA's in one year.
Opie can't help the injuries that struck the team, and U musta forgot the talent that Opie offered contracts to but they went to other teams..several TOP defensive players were offered to come here and they turned us down..so what the heck do U expect him to do?
He has to sign whoever he can to fill a hole.. Now does that mean I agree WITH every signing and draft pick? No and no one should ever misconscrew that from me..I awlays voice things I don't like and give the WHY ..but I see the guy is trying , he's made some mistakes in how certain things were done but I'm giving the guy a chance to improve the team..

They do need to win the majority of the home games though.. for ONCE!!!
Oh yea,,, of course they need to do that.. 5+ wins at home would be terrific and I'd love it. I don't know for sure if they are capable, but it would be great.
But just as important are divisional wins.. We can't go Ofer again...of all the stats from last season, that's probably the one that bothered and baffled me the most...

This is a pivotal year. IMO we need to show HUGE and I mean HUGE improvement on the field and in record.
I agree. And it starts at home.
The schedule won't be posted for another couple of months, but I can tell you the home opener is a critical game.
If we lose that, we are done.
I gotta agree there.
I felt the wind taken out of the sails of the whole season just from that opener. Sure we had no idea that the Saints would go on to the NFC Championship game, but I had never felt so many expectations just die right there.
On the first 3rd down when Frye dropped back, held the ball, held the ball, ran for a little bit...sack. I knew it was gonna be a long year and Savage whiffed on the QB situation.
I watched the game in my friend's dorm, and the walk back to my dorm was absolute silence. You could hear a pin drop outside amongst Browns fans. No one expected us to lose to the Saints.
This brings up an interesting Q: Why the hell can't we win at home? Why do we play worse at home? Why do they make us hate them so much?

This is why I give you such grief. After ONE PLAY, you deemed Frye a failure. Unreal. What about when he was in the 4th qtr and threw a great pass to Edwards that could have went the distance and won the game and it bounced off his hands for a pick? Did you decide right then that Edwards was terrible? You crack me up with such a terrible attempt to evaluate players.

I know you don't really mean that Peen,,,,
No...I pretty much do.
I mean we could lose by a point or something and it not be a total calamity.....but winning at home is key to this season...
If we have 3-4 home loses by the bye.....Romeo is out the door and Savage follows when the season ends if the team doesn't pick it up the rest of the way..
I will tell you why...that 1st home loss will set the tone for the next home game...and it won't be pretty....fans will be in a booing mood...a win buys the team another game before the fans turn...every loss at home is going to have the fans ready to turn...we CAN'T have 2 home losses in a row.
Mark my words...that 1st home game....no matter if in week 1,2,or 3 is a critical game. Everybody in Berea needs to understand that is the game they need to circle.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

You are so quick to jump and defend Frye when Ammo speaks that you didnt even read what he said.
He said Savage whiffed on the QB situation and rightfully so.
To hand the starting job to Charlie last year with No Veteran QB to even compete with was an absolute joke. I understand the need to get the evaluation process with Fyre over with but there were several games where a Vet may have handled things differently and maybe chalked up a few more wins. There was not a single win last year where the play of charlie frye was the reason we won. To think that we wouldnt have done better with a veteran at the helm is ludicrous. Looking back at all the finger pointing that went on and the braylon blow-up one could hardly argue that the gamble to try to evaluate last year whether Charlie can be a starting Qb failed miserably.
No questions were answered, more questions are now being asked.
I understand your affinity for Charlie as he has some good attributes (high completion percentage, moxie, mobility etc) but as far as the decision making process to give Charlie the reigns last season Savage whiffed, just like ammo said.

The intent was to evaluate him without any pressure of someone looking over his shoulder.. They wanted to see what the kid REALLY HAS.. And I tell U what I was able to see it even though the supporting cast let him down a lot.
Thus he's NOT A QB that will lead this team to a playoff birth let alone a SB even with all the parts in place..

Maybe you should reread what was said and what I refuted. Here is his statement:
On the first 3rd down when Frye dropped back, held the ball, held the ball, ran for a little bit...sack. I knew it was gonna be a long year and Savage whiffed on the QB situation
The FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR ON ONE PLAY, he decided that Frye was not the QB for the Browns. That's absurd to be polite.
Also, who has an "affinity" for Frye: I have said we don't know what Frye has to bring to the table yet and it's too soon to throw him on the scrapheap. It's the impatience and ignorance of the game that makes me come to his defense and sound like a Frye pimp. After all, Ammo was demanding we draft Smith with the #3 pick before the championship game! That type of "typical fan" crap being spewed is something that people with a clue about the game SHOULD take to task. It has nothing to do with my "affinity" with Frye.

I repsect the fact that your are willing to call like you saw it, but how many other folks here or on the browns organization saw what Charlie really has, what kind of evaluation was actually made? I am not sure if he can be sucessful but i didnt see lot of things that made think he can take this team places. Quote:

It is all good and fine if we feel or dont feel that way but what does the FO think? I am not sure they could really pass out a grade on Frye last year due to the O-line injuries. I agree that they needed to give him a "shot" without him looking over his shoulder but it may have benefitted him just a bit to have Vet to lean on, and there wasnt any reason to just write off the season off so we could evaluate him as if he is the cornerstone of the whole frachise. One of the best ways to evalaute him would have been to give him some competition for the job and see if he could rise to the occasion.
Competition is a good thing. Coddling is not which is why the starting job is up for grabs between him and Anderson god help us

While I see your point about it setting the tone, I hardly think we are done after one home loss.. Is it important, you bet! I can agree with that all the way. But if we lose, are we done? No! That I can't buy into..
Tell you what however, if we lose that first home game and the players think we are done,,,, Then yeah, we are done.

With that statement I better see your LAST MOCK having one of 2 names for Cleveland...
Russell Quinn
Cause there ain't another QB worth a flyin' in this draft... Nor is there a FA available...And we're NUTS if we give a #1 for Schaub...
Go Browns!!!
