http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33994611CLEVELAND - The day after the Browns lose miserably against the Ravens former Browns running back Jim Brown says he believes that the owner is interviewing someone today to fill the post. Brown was part of the 2009 Starlight Guardian Humanitarian Award program at Landerhaven. Brown said he believes that Lerner was interviewing someone today to fill the shoes of Kokinis who recently exited the team He was also asked if Mike Holgrem was being interviewed. He chuckled and said, "You said it, I didn't." _______________________________________ Interesting considering Mangini cancels his press conferance and doing a teleconference instead.

OK,, Here's the plan,, I'll take Hopkins and someone else take Burke and someone else take the Cuyahoga county airport,,
we'll watch to see if Holmgren gets on a flight out of town
Honestly, I'm kinda taking that to mean that Holmgren is in town interviewing... But no way to know for sure yet...

I don't put a whole lot of stock into this. I like Jim Brown as a football player, but I don't really consider him an authoritative source on the Browns organization.

I don't know how much Jim Brown knows.
I do know that he knows more about the situation than you and I do.

I agree that he may know more than you and I. But just because Jim Brown says it doesn't make it so, IMO.
All this is going to do is lead to crazy and wild media speculation, and nothing will come out of it...although I'd be pretty happy if something did come out of it.

If Mike Holgrem gets the JOB as GM or President of Football Operations, I'd be pleased.
He could be the start of the "stability" we need. Next, find a GM (IF Holgrem isn't it). It's possible that he gets offered the (President of Football Operations/General Manager) Position.
Next, we need a Decision on the Head Coach. Give him the rest of the year to show some improvement and make a decision then, or make the decision now and appoint an interim Head Coach (Rob Ryan).
Meanwhile, Interview possible Head Coaching Prospects (Gruden, Shannan, Cowher, and ect) if they are interested in taking over the HC Duties, or would like to be brought in for the 2010 Season.
Start assessing the Team Personnel and Players for the 2010 Season. What would be needed, players to scout in the Free Agency Market and the NFL Draft.
Then give this system/plan on the rebuild 5 Years before evaluating their futures.

Can Holmgren really be a good GM? Why was he removed from being a GM/czar type while being head coach at Seattle a bunch of years ago? Does anyone know what the circumstances of him losing that position were? Was he just too overloaded with GM/Coaching?
He was GM for 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 I believe.
Holmgren's drafts:

thank you...I've been meaning to do this and just hadn't yet....
if those indeed are his drafts....not too shabby.
after his first draft in 1999....he did really well early on. a lot of playmakers there (though notice that he doesn't care so much about character as Koren Robinson and Jeremy Stevens had big red flags in college).
now, on the same token, he didn't really hit much late other than Pork Chop....but I'd gladly take a guy who doesn't miss any early draft picks.

Jim Brown: Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner meeting with top football mind By Tony Grossi November 17, 2009, 3:02PM CLEVELAND -- Browns owner Randy Lerner could be stepping up his efforts to land a new head of football operations.
At a luncheon this afternoon, Jim Brown, who holds the title of executive advisor with the club, said that Lerner was interviewing somebody to turn around the Browns' fortunes.
"At this moment, right now Randy Lerner is meeting with one of the great football minds in this country," Brown said in remarks prior to and during the luncheon. "And if things work out, that person will come in to run the football side of the Browns."
Brown would not disclose who it was. When somebody asked if it was Mike Holmgren, Brown responded coyly, "You said it ... and I heard it."
Brown made his remarks at a luncheon of Our Lady by the Wayside, who presented him with the organization's Starlight Guardian Humanitarian Award.
Holmgren, the former Green Bay and Seattle coach, has been rumored to be No. 1 on Lerner's wish list to hire a "serious, credible leader" to reorganize his football operations.
An NFL source close to Holmgren said he was unaware of a meeting with Lerner, but did not discount it could happen.
The source said, however, that Holmgren intends to wait until the 2009 season is over "to see how the dust settles" before making a decision on his future.
Holmgren was contacted by Lerner a year ago, but he said he would take the '09 season off. He coached in Seattle for nine years after five in Green Bay. He took both teams to the Super Bowl, winning one and losing one with the Packers, and losing one with the Seahawks.
For the first five years in Seattle, Holmgren held titles such as president and general manager, along with coaching the team. He was stripped of much of his authority in 2005 when Tim Ruskell was hired as president and GM of the franchise.
The NFL source said that Holmgren wants to wait until after the '09 season to determine whether he wants to coach, serve as a football czar a la Bill Parcells -- or do both.
"He has a full palette of things to choose from," said the source. "I know he wants to come back."

Does anyone know how much say he had in Green Bay? I thought Ron Wolf pretty much ran the show there. But you couldn't find a better guy to learn off of.
I guess he had freer reign in Seattle?

It sounds like Gruden is gonna be in the booth for a couple more years.
But after seeing those pictures of him dressed up in a Browns' jersey. I don't know. It might be tempting to join his old buddy and try to revive his childhood team.
Also, I don't see Mariucci taking an offensive coordinator position. I hope he would. But I don't see it happening.
If we hire Holmgren, I can't wait to see/hear Mangini press conference. It would go something like this...
"Any time you can bring in a guy as respected as Mike Holmgren to help out on the football side of things, it's a good thing. I'm happy that Mike is here to help me bring this team back to where I think it could be."
Or something along those lines. He will say that, but in the inside this is what he'll be saying...
"I can't believe this. I have to pretend to like having Holmgren around, even though I know he was brought in here to fire me. And he won't even let me trade for Wayne Chrebet."

I think you hit on it in your next comment. I can't think of the last time one person was both the GM/Head of football operations and the HC at the same time and was successful..
Each individual job is tough enough on it's own. Each job requires many many hours of work.. I can't imagine anyone really being able to do both on a consistent basis and be as good as they can be at either one.
I"m not sure it has ever worked but let's say it has.. I'm talking modern era now.. not in the day when Paul Brown did it in the 40's or maybe even the 50's.. Modern times,, let's say,, 1990 to present..
Does anyone know of it working...

That guy in New England has handled it pretty well.
Also, Andy Reid has done a great job as well.
And I'm pretty sure Parcells was in charge everywhere he went.
Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
For the most part I don't think it's a good idea to have the head coach also be the GM/VP of Player Personnel. But when surrounded by the correct people I think it can work.

ASSUMING that Jim Brown can be taken as a credible source, outside of Holmgren, how many people could this be? Again, this is Jim Brown talking.
Bernie? Accorsi? Paul Brown via seance?
I'm taking a "wait and see" approach on this one.

Thats was the beginning of Wolf & Holgram era. Ron Wolf pretty much did the drafting FA signing ect, but Holgram had some say also, they worked pretty well together. as the team & themselves became succesful, there was somewhat of a power struggle not a all out war in the papers, but it happened, which lead to Holgram taking the job in Seattle.

I think we all need to remember this: NFL Expands Rooney Rule To Cover Front-Office Hires By Mark Maske Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, June 16, 2009 The NFL has extended its minority interviewing rule to include openings for general manager jobs and equivalent front-office positions, in addition to head coaching vacancies. The league made the announcement yesterday. The move had been expected after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said at a set of owners' meetings last month in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that he planned to expand the rule. Under the new rule, any team seeking to hire a senior football operations official for its front office must interview at least one minority candidate. "The discussion at the league meeting identified the strong reasons for taking this step, which in large part simply confirms a recommended practice that clubs have voluntarily embraced," Goodell said in a written statement released by the NFL. "The recommendation also recognizes that this process has worked well in the context of head coaches, and that clubs have deservedly received considerable positive recognition for their efforts in this respect." The rule previously had required each club with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least one minority candidate. That provision widely is known as the Rooney Rule after Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, the chairman of the league's workplace diversity committee, and was credited by many observers for the recent gains in diversity the league has made in its head coaching ranks. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, the group formed to promote diversity in hiring at all levels in the NFL, had pressed in recent years for the league to extend its minority interviewing requirement to key front-office jobs. But NFL officials until recently had resisted making that move, instead asking teams to follow the guideline voluntarily. The league indicated the minority interviewing rule will not apply to a case in which a team's top front-office job is held or filled by the franchise's owner or a member of his or her family, or in a case in which a team has an existing contractual obligation to promote a member of its front-office staff. According to the league, Goodell also urged teams to interview a diverse slate of candidates for other vacant front-office jobs. link

Holmgren can start immediately can't he? If that's the case he can coach the season out, evaluate the players and staff and hit the offseason running as GM! I love it when a plan comes together! Brown is probably senile though...

all true and the ones I was going to mention. good job.
i will add that the reason they were successful was that while they had 'final say' on the roster decisions.....they put smart people in place to advise them and take care of the dirty details that the job requires. that way, they still had time for their HC duties (Pioli in NE...Heckert in Philly...even Stephen Jones in Dallas for Parcells and he's had others in NYG, NYJ and NE)

But both Reid and Belichick have final say over personnel.

It certainly wasn't because of his drafting. As someone else put it, outside of 99, that's pretty good. I can't remember specifically, but I think that it was that he was doing both ok, but neither exceptionally well. So, they brought in Ruskell as GM and put Holmgren as coach.
I like the idea of Holmgren as GM - loved him as the coach of the Seahawks too (and being a season ticket holder, I got to see him for 5 years). Just remember that he's a WCO guy and knows that system well (4-3 too), so I suspect that he'd want to bring in the type of players and the coach that fits the systems he's familiar with....
An interesting article I just found: http://sea.scout.com/2/816748.html

And I think therein lies the problem with the Rooney Rule. Maybe at first, it was necessary. But it's gotten to the point in the NFL that minorities are equally considered for jobs because teams want to just win. It doesn't matter what color/gender, etc. they are. So now, the teams will bring in a guy, ask him a couple questions, and then bring in the person they really want. Maybe there's a job opportunity for a black guy to just be a professional 'token' interview. "Give me $10,000 and I'll satisfy your Rooney Rule requirement!"

According to this ,he's not coaching in 2010.
Quote:
To make it clear, Gruden told me he definitely would not coach anywhere in 2010 and didn't plan on coaching the year after; and ESPN vice president Norby Williamson told colleague Richard Deitsch that Gruden would "absolutely'' be at ESPN for the 2011 season.

Actually...those drafts are pretty bad
I wouldn't mind Holmgren as HC but not as Czar or GM or anything....he's just another Coach drafting like a coach....he was demoted in SEA for a reason....why should we go the Mangini-route AGAIN?
I really think HC just aren't objective enough to evaluate pure talent....they get caught in lots of detail stuff and don't see the big picture often.....a HC always see material he can develop....but that's not the lone goal in the NFL.....players must be ready to play and already have some talent to do so
same with Cowher....I know from Steelers fans that he was terrible on his draft "jokers" he advocated selecting (does anyone remember OLB Jackson in round 2 anyone? ....that was 1 example)
The guy from Philly would be my #1, Heckert?...their drafts are very solid and always value NOT need driven

I would doubt that we would be talking to Holmgren as GM.
If anything, I would suspect Team President ..... but to hire a GM before the President (final authority) would be more of the same.
