Heckert is certainly a good option. However, we can't even talk to him until their season is done. But, it would be worth the wait to make sure we get it right.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I have heard that Gruden signed an extension with Espn to continue broadcasting. Question is, is he allowed to void the contract for a coaching job? Any knowlegde on this anyone?
According to this ,he's not coaching in 2010.
Quote:
To make it clear, Gruden told me he definitely would not coach anywhere in 2010 and didn't plan on coaching the year after; and ESPN vice president Norby Williamson told colleague Richard Deitsch that Gruden would "absolutely'' be at ESPN for the 2011 season.
Just like Nick Saban said he's wasn't leaving the Dolphins for Bama.
I'm not calling Chuckie a liar, just, I'll believe it when I see it. Though, why would you want to get another high stress coaching gig when you can travel the country, watch football, talk about it, AND get paid for it. Seems like a gig you don't give up.

agreed.
i do think, however, that the perception is this offseason will be a gold mine for newly hired head coaches. gruden would be a fool to exclude himself from that possibility. with the market, these coaches could be paid multiples of gruden's best expectations a few years ago. as much as others are saying they got the exclusive, no way gruden is barred from going back to the nfl in 2010.

And I think therein lies the problem with the Rooney Rule.
Maybe at first, it was necessary. But it's gotten to the point in the NFL that minorities are equally considered for jobs because teams want to just win. It doesn't matter what color/gender, etc. they are.
So now, the teams will bring in a guy, ask him a couple questions, and then bring in the person they really want.
Maybe there's a job opportunity for a black guy to just be a professional 'token' interview. "Give me $10,000 and I'll satisfy your Rooney Rule requirement!"
give me $1,000,000 and I'll be your token white cornerback

"It certainly wasn't because of his drafting."
Did you read the article you linked?
I linked as part of the edit. Nonetheless, here's my thoughts on the drafting...
1999 - terrible
2000 - future NFL MVP in Shaun Alexander, long time Seahawks #1 WR in Darrell Jackson and a more than serviceable LB for Seattle in Isiah Kacyvenski. Add that he added Robbie Tobeck (who was with Seattle for years), and traded Joey Galloway for 2 first round picks, and overall he did very well.
2001 - while nobody would argue Koren Robinson didn't have talent, his head is what messed him up in the NFL- bad first round. Steve Hutchinson is still regarded as one of the best (if not THE best LGs) in the NFL. He wasn't GM when Minnesota signed him to the poison pill contract. Ken Lucas had been a starter as CB and a good one before he left as a FA. Heath Evans spent 4 years in Seattle and is still in the NFL. Floyd Womack was Mr Versatility in his 8 years in Seattle, and started about 50% of the time. Not bad for a 4th round pick. Alex Bannister never worked out as a WR, but was a special teams demon. For FA, he added Dilfer, Engram, and John Randle. He also traded for Hasselbeck for a 3rd and swapping firsts. Overall, successful draft.
2002 - Stevens was another head case he drafted in round 1. Mo Morris was more than servicable as backup to Alexander, as well as part time starter. Rocky Bernard was a 5th round steal, and played well for 7 years in Seattle as a DT before he left in FA to the Giants. Nothing to write home about in FA, though DD Lewis contributed as a backup and special teams guy for years. Overall, below average.
So, 2 bad years and 2 good years when taking into consideration the draft, FA, and trades. Add into the situation with Bob Whitsitt, the guy who was nicknamed "dimwit"...they had a bad relationship at best. Its hard to be successful when your boss doesn't let you do your job. Here's a little snippet with more detail than I knew until now...
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seahawks/2002151567_kell15.html
So, all in all not bad for Holmgren in his first attempt at GM. He's 7 years older with 7 years more experience. And as I said in my opinion that you quoted, it certainly wasn't from his drafting.

Thanks,I now understand your position. When I first saw your drafts results,I wasn't impressed, very few names jumped out at me.But I figured that was a long time ago and I had frogotten most of those players and I don't know squat about Seattle anyhow. I read the article and the writer's opinion is completely opposite of yours,I was just trying to get it straight in my mind.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

No problem BC. It helps that I've been a season ticket holder for now the 6th season and have lived here for 10 years...I know as much about the Seahawks as Browns.

While I believe he doesn't plan on coaching, if someone offers him the right deal, the right money, the right everything,, there is always a possibility
exactly. his extension at espn means crap. he can get out of that at any point, i believe all those commentators have clauses like that so they can get back into coaching...
i really think lerner needs to do this right, open up the checkbook and make a big splash, bring good people to make decisions he himself should not be making, and let everything else just trickle down.
i like the idea of holmgreen. i think the city would realy get behind a guy like that. class guy, good football guy, has the track record. i love gruden too. i dunno how interested he is in the browns job (don't buy into what you heard last night, he has done that every single game, he is clearly not burning bridges, he loves everything and everyone in the nfl)
but i really think all lerner needs to do is get that top guy, that president who then can make all the football related decisions. then people will stop hating on the guy.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here.. dispite what you hear in the press.. I think that randy is talking to Ernie Accorsi today to come in, help fix the immediate problems and train Kosar to take over in some set period of time..
WOW,, that even sounds wierd to me now that i've read it

I agree.
Grudens extension doesn't preclude him from taking a NFL job if offered.
He and his agent would qualify as moron's if they took a deal like that.

Personally I think Gruden is having too much fun yapping it up with the guys in the booth and I don't see him leaving that cushy job unless they ask him to leave.

At this point, He's gotta be as sick as us about losing.. I think he's shell out anything he had to to make it work...
It's as much a shame that he has to shell out big money. I hate that part of this whole BS.

I don't put a whole lot of stock into this. I like Jim Brown as a football player, but I don't really consider him an authoritative source on the Browns organization.
Taking it a step further, can we PLEASE put a muzzle on him?
Seems like at least a couple of times a year he opens his yap when he shouldn't.............

I love Jim Brown but the dude needs to realize when to stop. A few months ago in the Sporting News magazine Brown had the nerve to call Ladanian Tomlinson overrated.
Shortly after Butch was fired didn't Brown catch alot of flak for admitting they were going to interview Ozzie for the GM spot?

Where was Brown when his boy Claurice Maurette was running from the law?
He sure jumped off that bandwagon really quick........

That depends on how much money was offered. If it's comparable to what he would make coaching, but without the stress and long hours, I wouldn't blame him.
I honestly have no idea what the contract looks like or if he can get out of it. Maybe it's something like he works exclusively with ESPN through 2010 (i.e. no coaching jobs), then after that he can leave ONLY for a job with an NFL team. That's just pure speculation on my part though.

let's get the backstory correct if we are going to go there.....Jim Brown said that Adrian Peterson was the most complete back TODAY and that LDT was over-rated TODAY.
he went on to say that Adrian Peterson had a chance to be considered one of the greatest complete backs ever if he continued to advance at the same rate.
LDT didn't like that and responded that he would show the world that he wasn't overrated this season. Jim Brown stood firm....
I agree there are often times that Jim should not speak (such as on the marijuana charge in the Stallworth case), however in this such case, he was merely giving his opinion on Adrian Peterson and saying that Tomlinson was basically past him prime. And from the past couple years, it seems that he is correct.

Ron Wolf......Great job in Green Bay....What else has he ever done, thats what scares me about him. I like him, dont get me wrong, I just wonder how much Wolf & how much Holgram, love to have them both back as GM & coach.
P.S. Rob Ryan deserves to stay, yes the Def. is onyl playing average, but they have below average talent.

I'm sure that what he makes plays a part in it.. but from every coach I've ever met, there is that competitiveness that he can't fulfill being on TV..
I think it goes far beyond just money.

On Tomlinson vs Peterson...Jim Brown was 100% right on.
Peterson has 917 yds so far this season...Tomlinson has 385 yds (same as J.Lewis). JB spoke the truth about Peterson's future in the NFL as well as what Tomlinson is "today".
Jim Brown is respected by the players as well as Randy Lerner and Lerner uses him as a communications link between our players and himself.
Sometimes Jim Brown might say a little more than he should but for the most part, he has been a plus for the organization since Lerner hired him, IMO.

Just a suggestion, Jim Brown is also human and has bad days when he dosent want people sticking pens, microphones ect in his direct face. Give the guy a break, or atleast the benifit of doubt, now if he does it a couple times than call the jerk out. I've met Jim Brown, Jim wasnt getting paid or anything, he had no reason to be nice, but he was very kind & very polite to everyone around him. I'm sure you have your reasons for calling him a jerk, but man, we all have good days & bad days.

I understand that. I have heard over the years that he was known to be a jerk on occassion but he shouldn't make people feel bad for being enamored with meeting him. I saw it with my own eyes.....just sayin.
