trading them,, No, I got no problem with that.. Trading them before you have replacements of qualty.. Yeah, that was dummer than a box of rocks.. that I do blame him for.
Would you have had a problem if we didn't have quality replacements before K2's knees went out and BE's demands for an astronomical contract put us in a position where we had to trade them or simply cut bait?
There were extenuating circumstances around trading both guys that would have made it difficult to find quality replacements in either case.

I think people are making too much of trading K2 and Edwards. Too much.
You're right of course....I don't want em back, I agreed WITH trading them but not for the value/situation (BE) or in KW's trade with the way we used what we got back (FA Royal, Veikune and a hail mary prayer 5th rounder comin up....just wasted)
It's 1 thing saying "we had to trade them"....ok, I agree...but it doesn't justify the value and EXECUTION of the compensation....our Offense performance has fallen off a cliff because of this LACK of execution....plus another fail job on the right side with StClair and Womack.....EM basically signed the worst starting RT and TE in the league and a backup G (all over 30yo) to START for this team.....and now everyone wonders WHY we ARE the worst Offense in the league
oh and concerning Robo: good luck gettin stronger and faster at the same time all while aging he is what he is and what every scouting report had on him: a mraginal WR who can't separate....he's the next Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarrett etc....a tall WR from a big school that didn't have NFL talent but had enough TV minutes + his dad in the league...that's just politics in sports
so, we have 2 of 4 picks already near "busto", another not even touching AVG (Mack) and the other one absolutely overhyped around here (Massa), who is a bofdy catcher and has trouble himself separating...so we invested 3 TOP PICKS for this Offense and selected no playmaker...
Mangini has the same glitch Eric Wedge had (hey both Erics)....another guy who thought he could win with 25 "character" guys....too bad you can't win with 9 catchers hitting...same in football...can't win with STeamers playing....maybe you have a nicer Christmas party but nor gameday performance...let's please not do the same mistake the Indians did keeping the bum on the wheel for too long, ok?

Trading them was the right move. It was the right move with K2 ... the uncertainty was too great ... and a 2nd in return was more than fair value, IMO. Edwards had to go. I was a long time Edwards supporter on here, but I've watched nearly every game with the JETS since he was traded. He doesn't have the mentality to be a #1 in this league. Getting a 3rd - or possibly a 2nd for him - well, it's just addition by subtraction ... and - one could argue - fair value in return ... even at a 3rd. I've really soured on Edwards. We may have taken a hit on O in the short term, but I think we are going to be much better off long-term.
I'm not sure how any person can agree that they needed to be traded BUT only if what we did with the picks months later were used differently. At least not in these two guys cases. They needed to go even if we swung and whiffed on the return value. Don't forget the other circumstances around why these guys needed to go ... health and contract issues ... that would have made it dumb for us to even entertain giving these guys new contracts.

Would you purposly cut yourself when your fifty miles from the nearest ER? Of course not.
Guys go down all the time due to injuries... Trading guys before you have adaquate replacements is a self inflicted wound...
I know we drafted two receivers in the second to maybe cover for BE being gone at the end of the season. But he was still here. We Traded KW early but yet, I saw no effort to draft a replacement for him.. All we did was pick up Royal,,,, Yup, that's working out just great..

I'm not sure what you mean by Extenuating Circumstances.... are you saying because they were both Malcontents and that we may loose them both anyway?

Django and daman....I hear you. You've both been proven right in the past. I know it's a long shot on Robo getting faster/stronger, but it could happen. on K2 I think we were counting on Heiden a lot and his injuries killed us. I envisioned him and Royal rotating and it being ok. With just Royal, well it sucks. I'm willing to see what happens. I like Mangini's plan (or what I can glean from his BS anyway). I think he did bring in talant. I think Mack is better than just ok, and has played some with some actual studs in his face. I agree St. Claire and Womack were/are just a horrible "plan". But there wasn't a lot out there either. I'm not 100% backing Mangini either. I am hoping RL hires a competent GM/VPOFO and let's them make the decision on Eric. I just hope one day we are good again. That's it really,.

Well, what if Larry Fitzgerald or Adrian Peterson, Or Peyton Manning was sitting there at our slot ? I dont want to spend a bunch on overpriced top ten playmakers in the draft either, but if true talent is there, you cant pass it up. On this team, any true playmaker, at any position is a dire need.

Ok, then answer this.
What would you have done differently with K2 and Edwards? And I'm not looking for this answer: "I would've waited until we could have had someone of equal talent to take their spots".
Be more specific. It sounds like you wanted to keep both until we had their replacements on the team. Lay out some scenarios where you would have finally pulled the trigger, inclcuding obtaining those replacements either via the draft or trade while also considering the trade value at that future time.
And if you come back and say "I don't understand the question." ... you won't get another peep out of me.

NRTU rish.
In hindsight the KW2 trade sucks, IMO. I was never all crazy about the trade anyway, but he's still catching balls and scoring points with a bad TB team. He's on pace for like 70 catches and 8 TDs or so... sure his body might break down in a couple or three years, but maybe it won't. After his operations he's gone on mostly guts, anyway.
BE, I got no problem with shipping him. He's disappeared since his 1st game with the Jets.

I know this question isn't directed at me, however this is how "I" would have handled this:
1. Winslow:
When I came in as Head coach I would have sat down with Winslow and told him straight up the following:
"Look I AM IN CHARGE HERE this is my team now, I have you under contract for the next two years. So I really hope you will be a part of this team and play within the boundaries i set for this team. You have two choices. 1. continue your attitude the way you have been, and I will bury you so far on the depth chart that even your own mom won't be able to find you on the roster sheet. since I own you for the next two years, you simply just will not be allowed to play period. two years of not playing at all makes you not very valuable to other teams. OR 2. you can play in my system, if you perform well i'll give you a raise or trade you to the team of your choice if you don't want to be here. So we can either help each other, or you can hurt yourself. take your pick.
Braylon Edwards:
I would have told him:
"I have you under contract, either you will play within my system, and be a good team guy, or I will bury you on the depth chart and you will NEVER step one foot on a football field this season. however, if you play well, have a good year and help me out i'll either give you a raise at years end, or i'll franchise you and allow you to work out a deal with another team where we get a fair compensation from you(2nd and 3rd rder) and you cna go where you want. We can either help each other out, or not. Its your choice
You need to be honest and straight up with these players...as a coach. this is EXACTLY what Bill Parcells would do...thats what Mangini should have done...in the above circumstances, Winslow and Edwards would have shut their mouths and played
but thats just me

Lerner is going to stay with Mangini for the rest of the year. He's going to fire him. For whatever reason he's just not trashing him.
In conclusion, Eric Mangini = Larry Craig.

Yes, we should follow the Matt Millen school of draft picking! WR first and to hell with our o-line! That's the ticket to success!

I'm sure that would have straightened them both out. Yeah, a good talking to was all edwards needed to fix his attitude and catch passes.

I pretty much agree with ya on most that post except da Mack part.
The dude is at this point "average" . He is a rook and centers usually get better over there 2nd and 3rd year. He is strong and plays with leverage. When he learns the schemes and gains some confidence....Mack will be Good to VERY good center in this league.
Heck....Thomas is looking like crap this year.....not to mention Steiny.
Hard to judge Mack now!!!!!
The others....still hard to judge..... although Masso does have the tools.
Maiva impresses me.....

I thought Thomas has been the best LT in the NFL this year. His individual play hasn't been bad at all.
As for Mack, his shotgun snaps are improving quite well, but his blitz-recognition and pickup is molasses-slow. Maybe he'll get it, maybe he won't, but he's having a rough rookie year. Getting better, but rough.

In your handling of Winslow all you would have gotten would be for him to be disruptive and once again throw the organization under the bus. If you think he would stop at blaming the team for a staph infection he incurred on his own time then I believe you'd be surprised at the lengths he would actually go to in order to distrupt, distract and get his voice heard.
My meeting with him would have gone like this: Kellen, you are one bad ass receiving tight end. Because of that I am going to do my utmost due diligence to get for myself the most I can get as I ship your insubordinate ass out of here. Have a good day.
To have told Braylon anything short of, "You are the best player on this team. Because of that I am going to do my utmost due diligence to get you out of here and into the limelight of a big market team where you really belong so you can shine the way you were meant to", would have gotten nothing more than a sulking, moody, can't-get-his-head-in-the-game prima donna.
If you think playing hard assed with either of these two guys with the main prize being to be allowed to stay on a team that is going nowhere and of which they want no part you are fooling yourself.
Before you can play the hard-ass you have to have something the other side wants.

Not disagreeing with you, but even when Thomas is chasing his defender from behind, at least 2 defenders going thru the right side of the o-line are getting their first. That was just one play that the whole o-line broke down on an obviouse passing play. I saw Thomas get beat a few times last year but I think he has improved on last years Pro Bowl year.
I just had this one play on my mind from the last game I re-watched tuesday. I saw the game in person but I watch every game when the next day after I get home. Th 2007 Cincy game and MNF Giants game, i watched right away and the next day. Thomas is still playing at Pro Bowl caliber this year. Better than the LT Jason Peters who alot of people were saying was the best young LT of the future. With Peters in Philly, Thomas and Miamis Long are going to be the best 2 AFC LTs for a while.

I would have started by saying that what's gone on in the past here is just that. I'm starting you and everyone else out with a clean slate. Everyone on this team is expected to play team first, self second. Those who do will have no issues. Those that don't will see it reflected in playing time.
I would have had that speech ready fo the entire team as well.
If you come in and challenge a guy like Winslow from the very beginning w/out even seeing what kind of working relationship you'll have with him you immediately put him on the defensive and force him to dig in and not back down. It's a bully technique and doesn't show good leadership.
It seems that Mangini didn't even try to do anything w/ Winslow, which tells me a lot about his leadership/lack of immediately.
In my many years as a high school coach, I've had several players that I was warned about concerning attitude and selfishness. In all those cases, while I may have been guarded, I tried to let the relationship develop before coming down on a player who hadn't done anything wrong while playing for me. Sometimes it worked, and a few times it didn't, but no player could say (and have it be true) that I was punishing him/her for past transgressions.
There may be people who have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. -Derek Jeter

I didnt think it would be right to go to a player and say "if you continue with your attitude". That right there would leave any player with a bad taste in his mouth.
One thing i would do differant as a coach is instead of saying "This is my team and Im the man in charge so you do it my way" i would say something "We are all professionals here. Lets work together. if you think I can do something better than sit with me and tell me. I will explain to you why I do it this way and consider your way and I see why you feel that way."
Imagine if Mangini came in and told Peyton Manning "Dont change my plays and your going to do it my way."
How about when Carthon wouldnt let Dilfer change any plays and didnt have an audible in the playbook.
At this level, the players are professionals and i think you treat them as so and their word should be heard. Not on gameday, but practice is a great time to let a player tweak something to look for better results. They should be able to work together and I dont think Mangini creates the kind of atmosphere that lets the players opinions on gameplay be heard. That could be a reason as to why morale is so low.

I've never coached on any level beyond 9 and 10 year olds, so I'm not a coach.
But I do know this about dealing with adults. Whether it's you, me Kellen Winslow or Braylon Edwards, in order for us/them to become team players and fight for the cause the employer has to have something we/they want. The Cleveland Browns have nothing either of these guys wants.
For Kellen it was not enough money and he was sick of losing. He is still losing, but he ended up with lots of money and that's like a spoonful of sugar helping the medicine go down.
For Edwards it was not enough limelight and he was sick of losing. He is still losing, but he's in a market where he is noticed and that is the most important thing to him.
The reason I believe Winslow will fare better in the end is because Winslow leaves it all on the field. He is a man, a soldier if you will. Whereas Edwards misses the kick-off because he can't pull himself away from the mirror.
There was no way to deal with either of these players as Browns. They were gone or they were trouble. If there was a mistake in dealing either of them it was the powers that be lacking the negotiating skill to get the most out of them at the exact opportune time.
That's just my opinion.

I agree with you on Thomas, but Mack just had his worst game as a pro imo.......hard to say he's steadily getting better. His line calls are crap, and as you said he is horrible at blitz recognition. Watching him at this point makes me think Django might be on to something here..lol.

He's going through a learning curve. He's struggled, but most rookie centers do. Most rookie offensive linemen do regardless of whether they have to make line calls.

The problem was not trading KW, the problem was replacing KW with Royal.
Royal is less effective than Heiden. Heiden is hurt, and was far better than Royal.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Wait,, let me get this right,, you ask me a question and tell me I can't answer it the way I want to...
Lets get something straight, This conversation started with me saying that getting rid of BE and KW was on Mangini.. and it is. You can't deny it.
I think it's a mistake from the standpoint that Mangini or Koks didn't find adequate replecements for KW... We picked up Royal who for all practical purposes has busted out here..
We also dumped a guy the Browns drafted the year before that we didn't see a lot of, but seemed like a prospect (rucker) and then we picked up another guy (estandia 6'8" 266lb) who I seem to remember catching a nice pass from either DA or Quinn... have you seen him at all since? Nope.
Now that Heiden is out, I expect we'll see Estandia or this Gaines guy(is he still here)
Point is,, Heiden had this big as life caution flag surrounding him due to his knees.. Royal didn't exactly come in with a reputation of being a stud... Mangini or Koks did nothing to replace KW.
Keeping KW would have been smarter at that point.
On to Edwards,, we go out and draft 2 WR's in the second round. Couple that with Edwards apparent desire to be gone at the end of his contract...and you get the feeling that he should have gone first. So trading BE would have at least on paper, made a bit more sense. ON PAPER.....
Mangini and/or Koks did it bassackwards.. IMO
For this I do blame them.. yeah..
But, putting all that aside for a moment.. I too was tired of the attitudes of both BE and KW.. in the long run, I'm just as glad they are gone. I just would have done it in reverse timing wise....
I think now more than at any other time in the last 9 years, we can see what a team without talent and playmakers looks like...
And Manginis and/or Koks moves haven't helped.
Before you say it, I'm not totally upset with the draft.. I actually like Mack and MoMass.. I think Robo will come along fine, he's a quality young man and just needs time I think.. Viekune and Miava (wow, did I butcher the spelling or what) may still prove valuable and I'm still very hopeful for Francise and Davis..
Let me say one other thing.. when we traded KW, I wasn't upset,, I thought that Mangini just didn't want to deal with him and I had no problem with it. But I also thought he'd go after someone to replace his production... We got Royal.... need I say more....
