Success on any level is measured by championships. Was Marty successful in Cleveland, two straight loses in the AFC championship game, I'd say no he was not successfull. Yes, I would trade todays record for those days but to me that is not being succesfull. Let me rephrase my question. Has any team had a GM/Headcoach win a Superbowl? Belicheck, and whoelse?

Your not looking for success, you want perfection. IMO Parcells turned a Jets franchise that was a joke at the time into a contender for a playoff spot with Vinny Testaverde at QB, IMO that is success. Success does not mean SB to me. For me, beat your division, and go to the playoffs on a regular basis. That is success,

I don't know.. don't really care. I was answering the question of whether or not Parcells was successful with the Jets and the answer is a resounding yes. Has he been successful with the Dolphins? Again, absolutely.

A person who is the head coach and also has final say over personnel decisions can be successful.
They just have to have good people surrounding them to help make the right decisions.
Belichick had Pioli. Reid has Heckert.
Mangini has no one.

Bellyache, Jimmy Johnson (had final say in personnel at that time), Andy Reid......to name a few. The problem is that the list is much longer of those who've had it that weren't successful.
There's alot of good reply's on here. One that I have not seen though is even though Belichick and Reid and to a lesser extent Cowher is the fact the none of these guys started out with final authority, they worked with the GM's for years and developed the trust. We want to start out with BAM our HC is the MAN, well it seems we first need to find a good GM & then a HC that earns the respect of our GM, only then can we expect similar results. If you check back on the history of these guys they all worked to earn the respect of the Org. If memory serves me right, didn't Reid threaten to resign at one time because they couldn't agree on the draft?
