I hope you guys are right about Mangini's one year stint as Coach. I just have this fear that Lerner (based on his past hiring decisions) decides to give the GM position to Mangini, so he is Coach/GM. I really, really, really, really.... ...hope I am wrong on this, but I just have this gut feeling, a pit in my stomach.

If Lerner does that their will be a revolt in Cleveland. If that even crosses Randy's mind he's more inept than I previously thought.

9 " Bozo's" in one post has to be a Dawgtalk record. You actually exceeded the board's Bozo Limit by 6. Good job!

My question is why is Bud Shaw the Bozo when Mangini is the one running this mess? Besides Bozo was a fun clown when I was young!
Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

EO...there is no doubt in my mind that once Lerner hired Mangini, Pioli crossed the Browns off his list.
I'm sure the Mangini sourced spy-gate issue was fresh in Pioli's mind.

Lerner knows that he has a built-in fan base. The Browns have been one of the worst teams in the NFL over the last decade, yet, the games have all been sold out. - Until this year. Lerner notices the empty seats and realizes that his built-in fan base isn't so secure anymore. He also knows that there will be more empty seats next year if Mangini is here.
He's gone and a high profile guy is going to get brought in. -Somebody who can secure the built-in fanbase. - Unless Mangini starts winning.

And how is this draft a failure. Cause of Robiskie...again a Bozo
Mack, MoMas, 3A, Davis all have produced. Robo still a good prospect. DV who the heck knows about him??? Francies still developing and has talent.
"Produced" huh? If you mean "contributed to this mess", then yeah....none of them has even sniffed at average play compared to others at their respective positions in the league....4x1st day picks that is....guys who are "still good prospects" or "we don't know about" are PROJECTS or BUSTS....and you should avoid drafting them on the 1st day
- Mack is a BIG reason our OL performance went south....you guys just don't seem to realize this yet....he's far from even being an average starting C in this league...he's a G in my book and should be moved there
- Massa is a big reason we have no passing game to speak of...don't even start talking about QBs...they are the same we had last 2 seasons, yet the passing game declined...why? what has changed? Coaches, receivers and C to RT OL-side....there's your downgrade...Mack, Massa and Robo are part of it
- Veikune? Just watch the GL-TD by Chicago.....bum doesn't even know what to do on a freaking GL-play....yeah, he's our ILB of the future. He will be on the roster bubble next TC with the new bosses in town, you will see... our LB drop like flies, yet DV doesn't get on the field, every waiver guy we pick up gets more PT or are at least active...guy obviously can't even play ST

I'm not going to belabor this subject too much Mac...cause although you eliminated it from your name...you are still a Bulldog and will clasp on and not let go
But I do think you are missing the boat and its as clear as the nose on my face...ONCE LERNER HIRED MANGINI...it was US the Browns that crossed PIOLI off of the list, not the other way around.
The HIRE was for the MAIN designer and builder - Randy chose Mangini over Pioli...done over with - and all our choice not his.

Your right, and another reason when I hear the phrase "Lerner looking to hire......" makes me reach for the Tums and ... the bed for a week.
Getting an established guy to be the "czar" and hire EVERYONE else is so key to this organization, because Lerner has proved time and time again that he can not bring in the right people.............hopefully the sun shines on a dog's butt this time and he hires the right "czar" though, and get's out of his way.

Its going to happen. I still think Holmgreen is the man to take over but I get this nagging feeling that Cowher is about to resurface.
Mangini simply can not field a quality staff. No one wants to work with the guy. empty seats is a huge motivator for change and lets face it, Players hate the guy. Media hates the guy. Fans hate the guy. He is disliked throughout the NFL for what transpired with him being a rat and now with kokopuffs. Mangini is done for in the NFL and will be blackballed once he is fired here.

because Pioli has done such a great job with the Chiefs so far? he may very well do a good job there, but so far his draft doesn't look much, if any, better than ours and they are struggling as much as we are.
just to keep it short, Pioli's 3 biggest mistakes (IMO)
1. Trade for and pay big $$$ to an unproven QB (who made his money taking over the NFLs most prolific attack ever after not even starting in college).
2. Forcing his HC hire to keep around parts of the existing coaching staff....this ended up causing rifts that ended with hte OC being fired (note: this may have been the owner's mandate, but then Pioli didn't convince him enough how bad of an idea it would be to not allow the HC to hire his own coaching staff).
3. Drafting a 3-4 DE who is not a pass-rush threat at #3 overall and paying him that $$$. Tyson is a fine run stuffer....you don't pay 3-4 run stuffing DEs that type of $$$.

And yet I read articles about Randy better stop idling on his decision and get it done quick...you know. Any direction Randy turns the media at this point is going to show a...not doing it right attitude. And there will be enough fans who will believe this.
I have come to the conclusion that due to the Rooney rule all movement in this HIRE has come to a halt. Cause I'm sure the few with Credentials and are minorities all are working for teams...maybe Dennis Green is the only one out there and he was just working with the UFL thing but he's gone through the token Interview in this process before dealing with HC. He might be reluctant to make the Czar interviews. So we are at a stop gap...Seattle is at a stop gap and showing no overtures to Holmgren.
And the hire for Mangini was not a bad one...it was the failure to make sure the marriage of Kokinis and Mangini was a successful one. That had a big thing to do with what went wrong this season. Randy stated that he had hoped Kokinis could have grown into that strong GM and didn't make sure that it happened instead of "HOPED". In that regard Randy made a big mistake. The path that we are taking and laid out by Mangini is not a bad one at all. As long as he is not both HC n GM I think it has a chance of working.

No .....
If the team performance doesn't show some improvement, it will be ugly. It doesn't matter who the head coach is.
I want to know a couple of things from anyone willing to answer.
What players on this team have been "coached down" to a poor performance?
What players could have been aquirred in free agency who would have created a marked improveent in the team's performance?
Given the fact that we had 4 or 5 draft picks antering this draft .... which players could have been taken who would have turned around this team's performance?
What players did we move out should we have kept? (bear in mind the long term impact of contract extensions vs. injury history, and other such factors)
I have always had about as much respect for Bud Shaw as a journalist as I did for Brian Billick as a coach. Shaw's opinions waver with each passing week.
A reed in a hurricane often has more substance.
If I wanted to get an opinion from someone .... Shaw would be at the very, very bottom of my list. In fact ..... if Shaw wants Mangini gone ...that's an endorcement for him to stay in my eyes.

The problem now is there's a stigma or an aura about Mangini that I don't think he can overcome. He's not gonna win next year either, at least not a significant improvement.
Winning would cure all but there's such an anti Eric campaign that even if the "program" is indeed good, he won't be able to overcome the continued bashing and the time needed to turn the ship around.
He's being bashed for sooo much that player developement has become a secondary issue. Maybe everyone is wrong, maybe they're right...I just don't see the guy sticking at this point.

Here's the thing though.
This team changes leadership every couple of years or so.We're going to have our .... 5th GM? How many coaching staffs and changes? How many directional changes?
The crap has to stop somewhere. This is an area where Mike Brown's famous cheapness has now served him well. He hired Lewis to be his coach .... and stuck with him. His team is now .... finally ....in a position to win. There were ups .....and downs ... and downs .... and more downs ..... and distractions ..... and all kinds of off field stuff ...... and now none of that matters. They are winning ...and that's all anyone remembers about the last 5 years.
This team will never improve until we pick someone to run things ...and let them do so. The owner can be involved ... and should have evaluation criteria ..... but "the fans don't like the coach" should be so far down the list that it doesn't even make the first 10 pages.

The thing is, with Marv Lewis you get a guy who seems to be well-respected as a man and a coach, although I admit he's a had a few players act like asses but still...
I agree if Brown wasn't so cheap he might have fired him two years ago.

hahaha you're right... IIRC that really only lasted a couple of seasons, it just seemed longer cuz they all happened at once. Besides, it's a shame he wasn't around when they were growing up: maybe some of 'em wouldn't have turned out like punks.

Given the fact that we had 4 or 5 draft picks antering this draft .... which players could have been taken who would have turned around this team's performance?
Remember Chris Palmer? Remember Butch Davis? Remember Romeo Crennell?
- All 3 of those coaches came to a a Browns team with zero pro-bowlers. -ZERO. When Mangini came here, we had 7 Pro Bowlers on this roster. -Granted, he traded two of them, and I was cool with that, but that still leaves 5 Pro-Bowlers. With a roster consisting of 5 Pro-Bowlers, Mangini has achieved far less than Butch and Romeo and has somehow managed to achieve less than Chris Palmer. - There is no reason why a team with 5 Pro-Bowlers should have 1 victory at this point in the season. - Mind you, at this point in the expansion season, we had two wins.
As for the 5 draft picks we had, before Mangini came here, we had our # 5 and a second rounder. Mangini traded Winslow which netted us another 2nd rounder, and he traded down from 5 which netted us another 2nd rounder, and then he traded down again which netted us another 2nd rounder.
I liked the Mack pick with our first rounder. I had no problem with this pick. However, on draft day, I was so upset with how Mangini/Koko butchered our 2nd round. - These idiots could have referenced a draft guide and done a better job. Of the 3 picks we had, only MoMass plays, and he isn't good. - Matter of fact, Momass and Veikune could have both been had later in the draft, in Veikunes case, way later. We drafted two wideouts in the second round and didn't hit on either. - Other teams that draft wideouts in the 2nd round do a much better job - Philly with Desean Jackson, Cincy with Chad Johnson. Heck, look at who Pitts took in the 3rd round and how he measures up to the recievers we took.
The 2nd round of the Browns '09 draft was the biggest display of NFL managerial incompetence that any of us have ever witnessed, and is probably the biggest reason why Kokonis was fired.
So, the fact that Mangini came to a team that had more talent than the teams that Palmer, Butch, and Rac inherited, coupled with the horrible draft, are my reasons for wanting Mangini out of here.
The only one of your questions I haven't answered yet pertains to free agents. Mind you, Kokonis was brought here to be the GM/Personnel guy while Mangini was supposed to coach the talent he was given. This past offseason, I don't know how me and a couple other guys on this board could see what Lerner couldn't. - That Mangini was acting as the GM/Personnel guy. -Considering that the only personnel being brought here were former Jets. Mangini had his chance in free agency, and he chose to bring in his former players. - A true GM would have not allowed this.
- These are the reasons why I don't want Mangini here as HC.

Nothing really new.. but maybe good for discusion... Enjoy http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2009/12/14/eric-mangini-keep-him-or-not/ Quote:
Eric Mangini: Keep him or not? Filed by Scott Petrak December 14th, 2009 in Sports. Print this story Read comments and discuss this story
Should he stay or should he go? One of the most intriguing questions facing the Browns is whether coach Eric Mangini will be brought back for a second season.
Owner Randy Lerner remains mum on Mangini’s future, focusing instead on the search for someone to head the football operations. Lerner is expected to leave the coaching decision to the new “czar” and doesn’t need to clutter the situation with votes of confidence or public criticism.
Whether the new football executive is Mike Holmgren, Floyd Reese, Tim Ruskell, David Gettleman or a mystery man, his first order of business will be judging Mangini. The decision is as complex as it is important.
Mangini has three winnable games left — at Kansas City (3-10) and home for Oakland (4-9) and Jacksonville (7-6) — to alter opinions, but arguments can already be made for keeping and firing him.
They are compelling on both sides.
5 reasons to keep him 1. He beat Pittsburgh.
Eric Mangini believes he deserves to return as Browns coach, saying he has the team headed in the right direction. Of course, it won’t be his decision. The truth is there are valid arguments for bringing him back and vaild arguments for cutting him loose. (AP photo.) It’s only one game, but the 13-6 win Thursday night was one more than Romeo Crennel managed against the Steelers in four years and snapped a 12-game losing streak in the rivalry. Mangini learned the importance of beating the Steelers during his time here under Bill Belichick and has been able to convey it to his players.
The upset Thursday wasn’t just another win. The Steelers are the defending Super Bowl champions and were fighting for their playoff lives, and the game was on national television and played in sub-zero wind chills. Fans had been looking for a signature win since the Monday night victory over the Giants in October 2008.
2. Making strides.
The Browns have just one win since the bye at midseason and entered the Steelers game with a dubious double: the 32nd-ranked offense and defense. But they’ve made noticeable progress and continue to give good effort.
They haven’t been blown out, have improved in every significant offensive category and have been efficient in the no-huddle offense under quarterback Brady Quinn. On defense, they’ve overcome a variety of injuries to post their best games against the run the last two weeks.
3. No quick fix here.
It’s not like Mangini inherited a playoff team.
The Browns were 4-12 in 2008 and two of their best players, Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards, had off-the-field issues that diminished their talent.
Mangini took the job believing he’d have a few years to fix the problems and put his plan in place. He showed his willingness to take a step back to eventually move forward by trading Winslow and Edwards for no-names and draft picks.
4. Solid principals.
Mangini doesn’t deviate from his value system. He believes deeply in hard work, discipline, intelligence and character, and wants players who fit the description. There’s nothing wrong with that.
His insistence on position flexibility and post-practice opportunity time came under criticism early but has paid dividends lately. Both sides of the ball have improved despite players switching positions and others getting their first playing time.
Mangini has a clear vision for a football organization and thinks he has the plan to achieve it.
5. Not enough time.
Firing a coach after one season sets a bad precedent. “Who would want to come coach here knowing if they don’t win right away they’re gone?” Joshua Cribbs asked Friday.
Mangini has spent a year installing a system and acquiring his kind of guys. His plan may prove unsuccessful, but he has a detailed and well-thought-out strategy that is specific to his coaching style.
A coaching change would require the rebuilding project to start over — again.
5 reasons to fire him 1. The record.
The NFL is a bottom-line business, and the bottom line is ugly.
The Browns are 2-11, and the wins came in bad weather, which diminishes a talent discrepancy. Derek Anderson went 2-for-17 for 23 yards in the 6-3 win in the Buffalo wind and Brady Quinn 6-for-19 for 90 yards in the 13-6 victory over the Steelers in frigid conditions.
The Browns will again finish in the basement of the AFC North and seem destined for another top-five draft pick unless Mangini can put together a season-ending winning streak.
2. Halftime adjustments.
One of the knocks on Mangini when he arrived from the Jets was that he had been outcoached during halftime and the opponent was better prepared for the second half. The reports have been confirmed.
Beginning with the opener against Minnesota, the Browns have been overmatched coming out of the locker room. They’ve been outscored 87-29 in the third quarter and watched close games with the Vikings, Broncos, Ravens and Chargers turn into runaways.
Even in the two wins the Browns were outscored 6-3.
3. Talent evaluation.
Mangini isn’t just the coach; he makes all the football decisions. Therefore, he gets the blame for the personnel moves that haven’t worked. There have been plenty.
Former general manager Phil Savage left big holes at right tackle, tight end (Winslow was on his way out), cornerback and outside linebacker. John St. Clair has had his struggles at right tackle, Robert Royal’s been a bust at tight end, no one’s stepped up at cornerback and David Bowens has been better since his move from outside to inside linebacker.
The draft class has also underwhelmed. Center Alex Mack and receiver Mohamed Massaquoi are consistent starters and linebacker Kaluka Maiava has filled a role, but receiver Brian Robiskie, linebacker David Veikune and Coye Francies have been non-factors.
4. Bad hires.
Mangini pushed for George Kokinis as general manager. Kokinis was dismissed after eight games.
Mangini brought in Erin O’Brien as director of team operations, and she was fired in October. He also hired offensive coordinator Brian Daboll without any experience calling plays. Daboll is smart and confident, but the offensive production has been lacking.
If you seek all the power and get it, there’s nowhere to hide when the decisions go bad.
5. Strained relationships.
A coach’s approval rating inside the locker room should never be the primary reason for him staying or going. But it’s important enough to be considered, and the locker room is divided when it comes to Mangini.
The guys he brought with him from the Jets, signed in free agency or drafted tend to be in his corner. The holdovers from the previous regime lean toward disgust.
Mangini gives off the impression of an uncompromising control freak who works his team until it’s exhausted. The truth falls short of that, but he needs to do a better job showing the players his human side, displaying a degree of flexibility and admitting when he’s wrong.

Coaches of the Week Eric Mangini and Rob Ryan, coach and defensive coordinator, Cleveland. The Arctic weather (minus-5 wind chill) helped in a 13-6 beatdown of the Steelers, certainly, because the Steeler receivers were neutralized by the deep freeze and the slippery field. But give lots of credit to Mangini, who has steadfastly maintained he is building a program, cleaning up the salary cap and adding draft choices for future Browns teams he plans to build in his image. (Whether he gets to do that, time will tell, but this game did help his Cleveland longevity.) The Cleveland team Mangini put on the field Thursday was a battling, hustling, never-say-die group that wanted to win about five times more than did the defending Super Bowl champs. Ryan choreographed an aggressive and schematically imaginative game plan that had corners, tackles and linebackers rushing from all over the map, like one of those classic Ravens' jail-break defenses his brother Rex made famous. Rob Ryan showed he knew the way to get to a plodding quarterback was to send rushers from different slots on almost every passing down, and it resulted in an eight-sack game ... and holding the Steelers to a measly 3.5 yards per play, Pittsburgh's lowest in the last 25 games. The #1 reason I want Mangini gone is his O coaching staff. Their incompetence throughout this season has been epic.
Reason to stay. These guys despite the record are playing every snap as if it was their last. There is no quit.
Reason to go. No free agent worth a damn is gonna wanta come here unless we overpay. Its Butch 2.0
Reason to stay. Rob Ryan is awesome. No matter what I want this guy to stay and be given full rain of the D. O minded coach to pair with Rob might be the trick.

Two reasons to possibly keep Mangini:
1. The poster on the Ruskell thread that said he prefers keeping things as they are rather than bring in Ruskell (I'll add Floyd Reese to that). As outrageous as this sounds it actually sounds preferable to me.
2. If God intervenes in all this, and Parcells decides he wants to show everybody just how big is cajones are, I think he would be the one guy who could possibly keep Mangini. If you look at history, if you have read his book, if you look at his philosophy, it actually is a possibility. Although a long shot.
Reasons to let him go: The handling of last years draft The handling of the Braylon trade (seems you guys have really let him off the hook on this one). Once quicksand sets in, its very hard to get out. (regardless of players recent vote of confidence) Daboll His apparent dislike of playmakers, players with talent.
Some of his decisions are just plain bad.

Your reasons to fire him are hilarious. Mangini, first of all, got a decent 3rd WR and a 3rd round pick for a pathetic primadonna WR.
His dislike for players with talent?! WHAT?!
Wayy too early to see how his draft did, but Mack is a good player and MoMass is at the very least a good #2. Too early to judge one way or the other on his other picks because they don't play. I will say that it's not looking too good so far.
The reasons to fire Mangini are this, IMO:
Brian Daboll. His lack of adjustments @ halftime. His ego.
I find myself changing every day on whether to keep or fire Mangini. My guess is that he gets another year at this point, no matter who the Czar is *provided he doesn't quit or refuse to work with said Czar.*
you had a good run Hank.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I'd agree.
I think there are two reasons to fire him in this article are weak in the talent eval and the record. Mangini obviously was here to blow it up and despite my thoughts otherwise, we didn't have the talent to go 8-8. He just signed stop gaps and wanted to build through the draft.
I don't know...but I keep finding myself thinking "I want to see Mangini with a good GM." Obviously he was pretty decent in NYC.

The most important guy to keep is Ryan, but yeah, Mangini deserves more time as well. Mangini is head and shoulders above RAC and we gave him 4 years. One thing to take note here is the guys that really stood out in the Pit game besides Cribbs were all Mangini's guys. 6 of the 8 sacks we had came from first year Browns players(5) with 3 of the guys being rookies. Let's also not forget about Moores beautiful catch that set up one of our scores,..Moore was a practice squad guy that was able to become "football ready" when given the chance because of Mangini's OPPORTUNITY SESSIONS .Bernard also commented that his readiness to play should be accredited to those sessions as well.
So, Mangini's the real deal, he has a plan and it's starting to show.

I don't know if he's the real deal....but things have been "better" as of late. I would be more than happy giving him another year as long as he's not the decision maker during the draft and free agency.

I think from what we know right now is that Mangini will be a HC only if he's still here next year.

It is a problem, but I think it can be fixed with time. On the other hand, he won't get much more time if he doesn't fix it soon.

I must have missed this....but did he EVER take any accountability or blamed himself?
I don't remember a time where he took blame for anything,,, but in all honesty, I don't remember him taking credit for any good things.. and yeah, there have been a few..

The #1 reason I want Mangini gone is his O coaching staff. Their incompetence throughout this season has been epic.
When we get a new Czar and we change OC's but Keep Mangini, would that be enough to cause you to rethink getting rid of Mangini? Just asking...

You may be right.. ON a personal level, I don't care for Mangini,, I don't like how he throws people under a bus, Belichick, McDaniels and even Kokinis..
But those reasons that are listed I have to believe are true to a great extent.. if you got something that it broken,,, you gotta tear it down and rebuild.. I'm guessing it's impossible to do in one year..
I'm going to stop calling for his termination and reserve judgement until I see how he does in the last three games...

How many Jets fans do you know? If you know a couple thousand,, then you got something there,, but if you know only one... who cares

I agree on Ryan.. I'd love to see him with some real talent to coach.. some of these youngsters are playing very well under Ryan.. and the game plan for the Pittsburgh game was pretty darn good..
As for Mangini,, read my comments above..

He really didn't do that badly last year.. Really, the only guy you can point to that isn't having some kinda impact is Veikune.. Davis is on IR so I can't fault him for that... Robo came alive.,., we'll see.. MoMass is looking like a solid guy that isn't a finished product yet. So all in all, not the worse draft we've seen.. Obviously, Mack is coming along fine and Mieava (sp) seems to be coming along fine also...
On the other hand, some of his FA signings... let's just say I'm not overjoyed with.. I agree, he needs a GM that can pick for him...

Romeo wasn't much better at his in-game decisions either...........
Mangini just seems like such a pompus jerk. But his Jets teams weren't bad, he was lucky to have Tannebaum as the manager. I would like to hire someone who could be the manager of this football team and clearly have power of him, like the Jets situation.
People say that Mangini is unlikable and too disciplinarian, and things like that. But that's also the kind of stuff that was said about the Giant's Jim Fassel. He worked on his faults, improved, and has done well for the Giants for many years (although they did lose big to Phili, they need to improve their defense).
A general manager is exactly what we need right now. Someone who can evaluate Mangini, decide whether he can work with him or not, and decide his fate. This is important, because it makes clear who is in charge.
I'm also nervous about this draft and the scouting. I wonder who is running the scouting now that Kokinis is gone

I'm guessing you meant Tom Coughlin.
I'm on the fence about Mangini, too. At first, I supported him. But as the season went on, I really questioned his abilities and his ego.
But I do believe we're seeing some positives these past few games. Is it enough to keep his job? I'm not sure.
Beating Pittsburgh has helped him a lot if for no other reason than it even makes this discussion possible. If he had lost to Pitt., even in a good game, people would not be coming around to his side. The fan outcry would continue and Lerner would feel compelled to make a move, if only to placate the fans (IMO).
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Oh ya, I don't give him an F at all on the most recent draft. I like Mack and MoMass (really liked Davis before he got hurt)....the others seems to be playing better (which you have to expect from rookies). I REALLY liked the Winslow and BE trades. I don't like how he's constantly looking at Jets to fill his roster.....but most GM's do the same (follow Parcells moves and you see he signed or traded for his former players a lot too).
I did think he should have got more for each trade down in the 1st. I didn't like dumping BE when his value was at its lowest (should have been in the offseason - he stole too many reps from the rooks).
Get a strong GM, keep Mangini, and lets focus on the draft. Beating Pittsburgh really helped him in my book. RAC's record against them was #1 on my list for reasons to fire him.

I strongly disliked the hiring of him from the outset. I vocally despised a lot of his off-season moves. The manner in which this team redefined "Crap" on a weekly basis at the start of the season further reaffirmed my beliefs that hiring the guy was a mistake.
The steady and consistent progress toward looking like a valid team that this team has shown since those first few weeks has me thinking that he deserves at least one more season. I would do it with a short leash, but I would do it. Not absolutely fixing the right side of the line, not getting a freaking cornerback to move McDonald to the nickle or starting the season akin to this last one, however, and I would can the guy in very, very short order.
