almost every game under RAC we were competitve and in the game till the 4th Qtr.

I don't agree with this. The same pathetic team we saw the first half of this season was the same pathetic team we saw the last half of last season. Poor right side of the OL (Shaffer getting knocked on his butt repeatedly), bad defense (26th in total D).

You know, I expect to get better in the offseason not worse or "as bad" ...that's NOT the goal of an offseason

I think in some cases (like a complete rebuild) getting worse is necessary before getting better. If you don't have a young nucleus of talent (at the end of last year we really only had Vickers, Joe Thomas, Eric Wright, and Shaun Rogers) and a huge salary burden, it doesn't make sense to dump salary but then replace it with a few high priced FAs. Instead, you have to install cheap system guys, then build through the draft to get that young nucleus of talent. The bad thing is it usually takes several drafts for this to pan out.

Your point is received, but I do not feel this is that sort of condition. I do not like the guy, but I am starting to see results - even in our losses like the Chargers game - and results is all I care about.

You call a 3 score deficit in the 3rd Qtr in a home game "result"?

Talk about lowered expectations

and honestly, of course we improved...was it even possible to get worse? we looked like garbage the 1st half of the season and now we're "just" bad....wow, it took EM a whole season to get us back to RAC level....consider me IMPRESSED....not

Hmmm...not an answer yet.

Easy there now...I am not pro-Mangini. YOU are the one who keeps spouting about how he tore down this roster and replaced them with worse or nothing.

I will ask the question one more time:

"Tell me who EM cut but he should have kept. Winslow and Edwards are already on the table. Who else should still be here?"

There are legit reasons to slam EM...however, he purged a roster of guys who are no longer in the NFL. THAT fact is not a reason to slam EM...use one of the many other reasons...but this delusion that he purged the roster of talent is ridiculous.

Give it a rest. Mangini could turn into the Golden Goose and and you'd still complain about the shape of the eggs or the declining price of gold. He could win the Super Bowl and you'd complain about the manner in which he did it.

Do I see progress in that sort of deficit? Hell no.

But, did I see progress in how this team played? Hell yes.

Which part of "HIS bums for other bums" didn't you get?

I never said he dismantled a SB-roster...but if the ones he released were so bad it should have been easy to upgrade, right? and THAT he clearly didn't do...all the while making the roster OLDER

@PPE

Progress? A 3 score deficit at home in the 3rd Quarter is NEVER progress, oh wait you're right maybe from those 4 score deficits of past games....:p

we are now competitive every 2nd game...that's it....yeah, it's "progress" compared to the pathetic mess he constructed and let onto the field in the first 8 games...but I don't see ANY progress to RAC's teams overall...and the RECORD is showing that....I loved RAC for that: you're as good as your record....I have never heard anything like that from EM....when asked he starts talking about "process"...0% accountability, 100% Faker

Show me an article or interview where EM is even hinting that he is responsible for what is out there...

Sorry that you didn't like my facts pal....3 score deficits are what they are, I didn't pull that one out of my bottom...we could also look at offense and defence overall ranking if you guys like....how bout some bottom line arguments? Nah...you guys want to see "the progress of the process"...have at it...

So you acknowledge that no player who was cut by EM should have stayed on this team. Therefore his purging of the roster was appropriate.

Eat the crow and move on...there is plenty to complain about with EM...purging the roster of non-NFL players is not one of them.

Look, all I'm saying is I get tired of you griping about everything......EVERYTHING. Negativity has never solved anything.

Perhaps I missed it - please - inform me on what the Browns need to do to better the team this year? In fact, you're the gm, what do you do to improve the team for Sunday? Again, perhaps I missed it in all your griping posts.......if I did, my bad. But fill me in - make this team better for Sunday........and you do it, how?

His answer is simple. Get rid of Quinn, get rid of Mangini, Get Lerner to sell the team.

If you think he's bad in here.. you should have read the stuff he was writing in the Chat room during the Pittsburgh game.. we were winning and all he could do is sit there and point out every single error on Mangini or Quinns part.. whether they were actually errors or not..

And I don't consider people like that good fans........was there room for improvement? Oh yeah - on EVERYONE'S part.

Heck, even Payton Manning could've done better in his game.

I know I don't post in the football forums much, but I get tired of SOME people that think they know it all. I'm fairly football intelligent, yet I learn alot/see things from a different perspective when reading in here.

But for anyone to think they are the end all be all of football knowledge - heck, it cracks me up.

Even the doggone coaches learn something every game.......yet there are posters on here that think they know it all?

What do your points about people who act like they know it all have to do with the point of view that if the Browns:

Got rid of Quinn
Got rid of Mangini
And (especially) if Lerner sold the team

that many of us would consider it to be the dawn of an new beginning? I suspect there are a lot of experienced football people that believe (and believe they know they are right) that the day after that happening they would have a degree of hope instilled in them that doesn't exist today and won't exist until those three things happen. They would have a new outlook on the possibility of us someday reaching the Super Bowl.

Does that make them bad?

I actually had faith that Marty could someday win the big one. It scared the hell out of me that it was possible he couldn't, but I never gave up hope. In a bizarre way I even had hope under Blanton Collier, although top coaches would work him like a tool.

I have no hope at this time. I am simply a diehard. I see no way we become what we need to be unless we get a TOP coach, a FRANCHISE quarterback, and an owner that MANAGES his business. No chance.

Whose to say people who believe differently aren't the know it alls? We have to wait another 10 years to find out if the ballboy, Jane, and the boy with the toy can pull off an NFL championship? Yes we do. Your telling us we have to like it -- accept it? Why? We have to hope that everything history teaches us is wrong, Miracles will just happen out of thin air (which is what I believe many on this board are hoping for).

The three things you mention are the three things that are necessary. Two of them may happen soon. But, its up to the boy who owns our toy -- variable #3.

Lets see if he can make it happen.

It's not appropriate if you sign older bums with less hope/room for improvement and messed up the entire offseason as a whole (draft and FA period horribly mismanaged)...that's not cool with me, you know

I was bashed when I said it in the offseason and now this is actually a PRO EM argument, it's hilarious: all his moves were LATERAL moves....back then homers tried to convince me that we improved our roster with the moves....now that this has been proven wrong, same said homers have dried up to "precedent regime was bad too"...hello? McFly? How is that an endorsement to EM? Bums for bums is NOT a good deal...

@Daman

I ripped Mangini once during chat...for the penalty decision and subsequent D-call which basically gave AT LEAST those 10yds back....he should write a x-mas card to Mendenhall on that one, cause this would have iced his job for sure

BQ was simply horrible...there's no argument...in fact I re-watched the highlight video at nfl.com today and they didn't even have 1 (!!) Quinn play in it...so much for that

Also, you should at least mention that in fact I was rooting for the Browns....Tulsa at least acknowledged this....I was up till 5am here in Europe for this game, doubting my loyalty is more than inappropiate

Okay. What ever. All we are is an owner, a coach, a qb, and a team away from winning the super bowl.

Got it.

While you want a new owner, a new team, a new coach, and whatever the heck else new you want......I'm willing to follow what we have and look for improvement. I'm sure "your" way would be better - fire everyone and start all over - but for now bud, we have what we have.

By the way, are you an owner? Or a GM? Or a coach?

No? Oh, so your damn opinion means nothing. Hindsight is 20/20 bud. What we have is what we work with........hell, you wanting a new owner? Hilarious. Hope you have a good Christmas.

Django, I don't begrudge you your opinions.. have at it man... But for cryin out loud.. every other post from you in Chat was how bad Quinn was.. what's funny,, you continued it when our Defense was on the field..

YES, you were rooting for the Browns.. Good

But give it a rest... There isn't ONE of us that is happy about the performance of this team.. they aren't good.. But as fans, we are always looking for a ray of sunshine.. doesn't mean we don't hate the way the team plays...

But just like the ever optimistic people are, the ever pessimistic people are as well... both (you included) tend to take something small and blow it up all out of whack to prove a point that few even care about given your constant grinding..

Give it a rest., we know,, you hate Quinn, you hate Mangini and you wish that Lerner would sell the team.....

We get it,, now go for a walk...

I am late coming to the dance on this thread. I have yet to scan all the posts so if I echo something forgive me.

I think Mangini will be back next year irregardless. Personally, if they fire him tomorrow I would not bat an eye or shed a tear. I would be reluctant to accept the idea that we would be in another rebuild then, as I don't see what he has done this year as resembling anything close to rebuilding what was here last year. He let go crap and hired crap. Outside a Roth here and a Trusnick there, it don't make me think we are getting something better than what we were doing last year.

The idea that you have to tear down to start what you want is, in my opinion, an excuse to deflect failed game planning and poor personnel moves. In other words it gives him an alibi.

If we were to hire a STRONG general manager, one who could check and balance and keep the staff on their toes than I can stomach another year with some sense of optimism.

It seems alot of people are high on Holmgren, and I hate be Mr. Negativity, but outside of his track record as a coach, I am not so sure he is the guy for the front office job. Ron Wolfe ran the show in Green Bay and in Seattle he had some suspect moves. I would also think that even he, (Holmgren) would have to settle in, make mistakes, learn, move on . . . etc . . .

There is also the fact that some potential GM candidates might not want to work with Mangini and I wonder if free agents would consider working for the guy.

In a nutshell, a very STRONG GM is what we need.

My $0.02 worth .....

When you have a talent deficient roster, you make changes. Some of those changes are to get the same results from a cheaper player .... and some are in the hope that you'll get l;ucky and find someone who fits better than the old players did.

I would say that some players like Roth, Mosley, Bowens and Moore fall into this category. These could be 4 "free" players who could contribute on a good team in the future. When you're rebuilding from junk, you need to find a few of these "freebies" along the way. (no draft picks/expensive free agent contracts involved)

I think that Mangini has done a decent job in finding 4 potential quality contributors.

You can only do so much to find new players .... and sometimes it's a matter of throwing a bunch against the wall and seeing who sticks .... scraping off the ones who don't ... then trying a new bunch. I do believe that this has been the philosophy .... given a certain amount of turnover at the bottom of the roster.

Here's the thing though. If we hire Holmgren, it is very likely that Mangini is gone as Holmgren will want his guy (just like Mangini wanted his players). It is also likely that we switch back to the 4-3. That is the D that Holmgren won with and reality is, we really don't have enough talent to justify staying in the 3-4 at this point. I also think it is likely that Quinn stays (at least for a year), as we simply have too much of a skill position talent deficit to plug anyone else back there with hope of success.

So, unless Lerner hires a Mangini fan for Football Director (if there is such a thing), he will be gone and we really don't need any other reason than that.

I wuldn't go to a 4-3 now. If I was Holmgrem, I would let Rob Ryan do his thing. His schemes have been the best since we came back into the league. And he doesn't even have talent yet. No way I mess with that.

Mangini not unsettled by visit

ESPN.com news services

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini says he's not unsettled by Cleveland's interest in hiring former Seattle and Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren to run its football operations.

Mangini, 2-11 in his first season with Cleveland, spent time with Holmgren during the 61-year-old's two-day visit with the Browns. Mangini described Holmgren's visit as a chance to get to know each other better. Mangini said they talked about the Browns and other aspects of this season but provided few details.

Holmgren came to town at owner Randy Lerner's invitation. He left without an agreement to take over the Browns, who have had just two winning seasons since 1999.

It is not known if Holmgren has been offered a job by Lerner, who last month said he wanted to hire a "serious, credible leader" to run the team. In an e-mail to The Associated Press, Lerner suggested the sides were still talking but gave no specifics.

Holmgren has also said he's interested in a front-office position with the Seahawks, who, like the Browns, dismissed their general manager during the season.

Sources tell ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Holmgren is hoping to have his future clarified and secured by Christmas. He recently returned from a nine-day vacation to Mexico with his wife, Kathy, where the couple was believed to have discussed his potential options.

If Holmgren decided to take the Cleveland job, sources say Mangini's future would be in considerable jeopardy.

Even if the Browns reach an agreement with Holmgren, it's possible they may have to conduct further interviews to comply with the league's "Rooney Rule," which mandates that a team must interview at least one minority candidate before filling a front-office vacancy.

Jim Brown supporting Mangini

ESPN.com news services

CLEVELAND -- Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown believes embattled Cleveland coach Eric Mangini deserves another year.

Mangini improved to 3-11 in his first season in Cleveland with a win at Kansas City on Sunday, but he could be fired if Mike Holmgren accepts an offer to head the Browns' football operations.

An NFL source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Holmgren's pending deal with the Browns was expected to be worth $50 million, possibly over 10 years.

Holmgren was expected to let the Browns know of his decision by Monday, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported. He turned down the Seattle Seahawks' offer of a front-office position during the weekend.

Holmgren did not rule out a return to the sideline when he said Friday that Cleveland's offer would include "any and all" of the titles of president, general manager and coach. Holmgren led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl after the 2005 season and the Green Bay Packers to a pair of Super Bowls, winning a championship following the 1996 season.

Following Sunday's win, Brown, an executive adviser for Randy Lerner, said Mangini should be back in 2010.

Brown believes the team is improving with "a lot of young people who we don't know who are playing good football." Brown also said he didn't want to contradict his boss.

The biggest thing in Mangini's favor at this point in my book is not that he won a couple games (though beating the Steelers is always a plus) but it's that the players are still playing extremely hard down the stretch of a dismal season.

Simply put, this team has looked pretty good since the bye week. Getting JL off the field has freed up the running game. If we only had a QB.... but that's something EM can address in the off season.

I just hope Lerner has sense enough to let him do his job.

It's fun to watch Browns football again!

I have been in the fire Mangini camp for quite some time.

But after these past two games I have to say I would be in favor of him sticking around another year, with Holmgren calling the shots at the top.

My only concern would be if Holmgren knows how to draft for a team that runs the 3-4, or maybe he would hire a GM that has experience in that area.

Hopefully Mangini can adapt to having someone else call the shots because he seems to be a pretty good football coach.

Maybe this is too optimistic, but maybe these guys could take a "team" approach?

I have heard for years that the Brown's scouting dept. is excellent and thorough, and that drafting problems have typically been caused by enthusiastic leadership overruling a majority grade.

Imagine a scenario where Holmgren (and his GM, if any) asks Mangini (or the new HC) what types of characteriptics he values in any particular position, and what existing NFL players exemplify that style. Mangini in turn looks for the same input from the Coordinators and the rest of the staff. These player templates are then compared to compiled information from the scouting dept. to create an organized, comprehensive Big Board.

Then, on draft day, they actually stick to the board, and take players based on months of research and coordination rather than one guy's instincts.

Could that work?

That sounds too much like a stable organization. Something like the Eagles or Colts or Ravens would do.

Is it possible that could work here?

Maybe, just maybe it' because thery are playing for themselves...we are talking about marginal NFL talent on a bad team after all...guys like Trusnik, Jennings, Moore, Benard, Costanzo, Ventrone etc are playing for their careers...guys like Harrison and Cribbs (who won the game) are playing for a new contract

If Mangini was such a great coach, why would he have Harrison inactive for several weeks?

I'm still waiting to hear an actual argument for his "good" coaching...what is "good" about it?...if not for Cribbs special returns we would have lost against KC...and PIT...and probably BUF too... and everyone would agree to fire the guy....gotta love homers

So what are JT, Steiny, and Mack playing for? What about everybody else that contributed?

I'm glad I'm not as cynical as you and I don't believe there is some self-serving ulterior motive behind every single thing the way that you do. I'm also glad that when somebody I don't particularly like does something good that I can acknowledge that good thing without twisting it into a negative the way that you do.... gotta love haters.

guys playing for themselves end up going for stats.....going for stats do not equate to good things happening overall.

take Cribbs for example....sure he could be going for himself trying to get those returns, but if the guys blocking for him (who likely will get little if any credit) don't also give it their all, then those returns don't happen.

it's not like he was going all Barry Sanders on those returns, there was good blocking and he took advantage with great cuts and good speed.

------------

also, who knows what happens if Cribbs doesn't return those kicks...it's not like KC was stopping Harrison, he may have had 400 yards (see I can play that game too). without those returns, the entire game changes and you can't just assume everything happens the same.

Holmgren did not rule out a return to the sideline when he said Friday that Cleveland's offer would include "any and all" of the titles of president, general manager and coach.

I thought that this is what we wanted to get away from .......

Scary, isn't it?? I don't know how Lerner sat back and didn't make it clear that it's one job or the other....

This scared me too, but it appears that he won't coach per this article:

Its unlikely he says. Holmgren will want his own guys IMO. Manigni has left his ugly mark on this team and I don't want him having a say in all the draft picks we have. I knew he was a failed hire from the start.

Mangini has 0.00% chance of being HC of the Browns next year. He has a higher shot at replacing Sherm Lewis as official bingo caller.

I'll start by posting what I said in another Mangini thread:

"Anyone who thinks that Holmgren's biggest decision is anything other than whether to fire Mangini on Jan 4th or 5th isn't thinking it through.

The man (EM) gutted the team. It sucks. He doesn't play the guys he himself drafted so who knows whether thay actually stink or not. He shafted the guy he hand-picked for GM. Other than possibly Ryan (and that's not a sure thing either) all of his coaches are suspect. He apparently knows less about QBs than Romeo (hard to believe, I know).

Honestly, other than a win against a Pittsburgh team that's a shell of it's former self what would suggest to a normal thinking human being that Mangini deserves a second chance at anything other than being a ball boy?"

The question/answer that seals it for me is this: Why would Holmgren keep a guy around that thinks he deserves all the power in the organization, once had all the power in the organization, and by all logic will probably resent that power being taken away and do his best to get it back?

If I had a guy that I thought would rather put a knife in my back than back me up I'd fire his butt in a New York minute. Which is what I think MH will do.

As I recall, we didn't much care of the way Belichick did it himself when he was here.

Exactly! Thank you!

Just clicking to add my thoughts...

When Bill Parcells took over the top job with the Dolphins, one of his first acts was to fire the Dolphins 1st year head coach, nearly the entire coaching staff and the GM.

Parcells came in and hired the people he wanted and in one year, the Dolphins went from a 1-15 team with Cameron as HC, to 11-5 with Parcells hiring "his" guy, Sparano as HC. Sparano had been an assistant under Parcells so he had a good idea what he was capable of even though Sparano had never been a head coach in the NFL.

Keep this in mind, Cam Cameron's Dolphins team may have been 1-15, but they had some tough losses to top teams, losing to the Giants and Steelers by 3 points and they did beat the Ravens in week 15, for their only win. They were only shut out in one game, 3 to 0 against the Steelers late in Nov. 2007.

Here is my question to those of you believing that the Browns must give Mangini one more year to see if he can produce a winning football team...

WHAT IF, Parcells had kept Cam Cameron another year because the Dolphin fans thought he deserved at least one more chance to turn the Dolphins around?

In 2007 the Dolphins were 1-15 in Cam Cameron's first year as HC.

In 2008 the Dolphins were 11-5 after Parcells fired nearly everyone and installed his coaches and GM.

In 2009 the Dolphins are 7-7, still fighting for a playoff spot.

You comments please...Did Parcells do the right thing?

Why shouldn't Holmgren do the same thing Parcells did when he took over as the Dolphins head of football operations?
