Hey all gamers, right now I have a WII. I dont care for it so I am turning it in. I had bought it as a rental just to try it out. So now I have to choose between a 360 or a PS3. Could people list the pros and cons of each system to help me decide which I am going to get?? The help is appreciated. KING

I do not own both, so I can tell you what I know. I will start by saying I own a PS3, and chose so because of it's capabilities and game history over the years.
The 360 has been around longer, so their library is bigger. They have some exclusives like Halo that draw in the hardcore gamers. Biggest issue with them is that you need to pay to play online, which is a big let down. Also, they seem to crap out a lot. I've talked to multiple people who have had the red ring of death, as they call it. Supposedly it's been better with the newer models. Someone else could probably answer this better than me. (Edit- in plusbrownies' thread, he stated they have a 52% rate of failure, which sounds retardedly high. Not sure how accurate that is, but I hope it isn't that high. That's crazy.)
The PS3 has a little more power to it. The cell processor is powerful. I think as years go by, the potential for games as they learn to program them will get better and better. One problem with Sony is they have lost some exclusive titles that have crossed over on the 360. But they do have some great titles exclusive to them. If you like adventure type games, Uncharted is off the charts. No pun intended. There is a game coming out early in 2010 called M.A.G. (Massive Action Game) which will set new standards online, as it will allow 256 players at the same time to be playing, a first for a gaming system. It is a shooter from the makers of SOCOM from the PS2.
The Playstation Network and their online gaming is free of charge, which is a huge plus. You can buy and rent movies and shows online through it. You have a Blu Ray player automatically when you buy one as well, which is a plus.
Both systems have popular series like Grand Theft Auto and the Call of Duty series. Maybe some others who are more familiar with the 360 can add some more for you.

I actually own both systems.
PS3: ***One of the best Blu Ray players out there On most games IMO I think the PS3 has better graphics Built in Hard Drive Free Online Community
Xbox 360: Best Online Community Best Online Experience I buy all games I plan on going multiplayer for my 360 I actually like the triggers and controller better- personal preference Achievements are cooler than Trophies More good exclusive games to this point
With that said some PS3 is starting to put out some exclusives that are darn good. MGS4 and Uncharted 2 are absolute must haves and are comparable or better than any exclusive that the 360 has.
Xbox 360s break and break often. The only goods news is that they have extended warranties on the red rings problems. I actually own 2 Xbox 360s, an older one and an Xbox 360 elite. I have had the red ring problem 3 times. That is 3 separate occasions were I had to send in my xbox to have it repaired. In fact I don't know a person who has owned their 360 over two years without having a red ring problem. I was hoping the elite would help with that problem but my Elite just died 2 days ago. More and more I find myself buying titles that came out on both consoles for the PS3. However, games are starting to offer bonus content on one platform or the other. An example is if you bought Batman Arkham Asylum for the PS3 you got a special mode which let you fight as the Joker. I think publishers are wanting to get their games to the most consumers and will start releasing almost all games on both consoles unless its published by Sony or Microsoft. For example Tekken and Final Fantasy used to be hardcore PS3 exclusives but they are going to be released on the 360 too.
So if I had to choose just 1 of the two and exclusive tites weren't a concern of mine it would be the PS3. Free online, Blu Ray's are amazing if you have HDTV, and least likely to break. The only way i would choose the 360 is if I was big into multiplayer games and really wanted the best online experience but know it is 50 bucks a year.

So far, from what I have read, i am going with the PS3. The red ring of death thing associated with Xbox scares me as well as the charge for the online community.

The 360 is more for the hardcore gamer and the PS3 it seems is more of the casual gamer. Lot less kids on PS3 multiplayer than Xbox Live I've noticed. Which is a good thing.

I have a 360 and know about 25 people that have one, and only one of those people has had the red ring of death and it took a week to get the thing shipped, fixed, and returned to him free of charge.
As for PS3 v 360, it really comes down to what you plan on doing. If you like to play online a lot, then you have to go 360. Xbox live might not be free, but it's way better than the PSNetwork.
If you just want games you can play offline and a great blu-ray player to boot, go with the PS3.
I've had the 360 for over a year and for the longest time couldn't decide between PS3 or 360, but when I looked at the facts that many of my friends have a 360, play online, and love the 360, I went with Xbox and would do so again if I could do it all over again.

When it first started happening it wasn't free. They didn't start to extend the warranty until about a year and half ago. And if you seriously know 25 people and only 1 of those people got the red ring you got the luckiest 25 xboxs sold. Seriously I have 5 friends in my hometown 4 of them have got red rings and the only one who hasn't just bought his like 2 months ago. Just because they fix it doesn't mean its okay or it should happen. It's a hassle and it takes three to four weeks to get it fixed. Dude just cause they fix it doesn't mitigate the fact its a defective machine that breaks at a pretty good rate. I've heard rumors of over a 50% failure rate and if you don't think that's true why did Microsoft have to extend a 1 year warranty to 3 years. It's cause they know its a problem.
The rest of what you said I agree with but don't try to downplay the red ring problem as I have had to deal with it 3 times and it sucks. I got sick of dealing with it so I just bought 2 Xbox's so I can rotate them as they break.

Absolute nonsense and fanboy speak. Each community has a bunch of kids running around on it. I've heard just as many 9 year old's telling mom jokes on the 360 as I have on the PS3.

To me, I'd be very mad if I got the red ring and I haven't so I can't complain. I love the 360 but like I said it's not like the PS3 is awful. I can't complain about the RRoD if it's never occured to me or to most of the people I know that have one. But then again, most of the people I know didn't buy a "launch" Xbox so that might be why they haven't had the same problems apparently lots of people have.

Well like I said they had to extend a 1 year warranty to a 3 year warranty for free. My red ring problems usually didn't start till about the 1-2 year mark. I know someone who it happened to within 6 months.

On July 5, 2007, the Vice-President of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division published an open letter recognizing the console's problems, as well as announcing a three-year warranty extension for every Xbox 360 console that experiences the "general hardware failure" indicated by three flashing red LEDs on the console.[15] A source that has been identified as a team leader and key architect in the creation of the Xbox and Xbox 360 and a founding member of the Xbox team[16][17] provided insight as to the high rate of failures. The interviews suggest that Xbox 360 units that fail early in their life do so because of problems in the system design, parts supply, material reliability, and manufacturing issues as well as a system not tolerant to faults. These issues were alleged to be the end results of the decisions of management in Microsoft's Xbox team and inadequate testing resources prior to the console's release. A second source cited that, at one time, there was just a 32% yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective.

I've owned both, and have had both die on me. Got both at launch... Xbox360 crapped out right after warranty. They wouldn't fix it for free as they had not extended the warranty at that time yet. ( fun for me right? ) PS3 gave out about 3 months ago. It too was a launch console with ps2 compatability. Also died after warranty was up. I'm not buying either system again, so now I play Wii sparingly and moved on to pc gaming, until I kill my laptop lol. Overall I probably enjoyed ps3 more cause it was free online gaming and I never had issues finding matchups or people to play against. Also enjoyed beta testing home. 360 was fun while it lasted, but Microsofts customer support turned me off in a big way, and I had previously owned only the xbox (playstation 2 what?). Things like graphics are very comparable with launch games, and Uncharted 1 was awesome, can only imagine how cool uncharted 2 turned out to be.

I don't want to get into fanboy wars over which is better. Last generation I had all three (PS2, Xbox and Gamecube). This generation I am in a different situation finacially and I can only afford (Time and money) to play one. I chose the PS3.
My reasoning was because
1) Games. At the time I purchased my ps3 (June of 2007) my favoirite games were Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Socom and Resident Evil. The first three at the time were exclusive to the PS3. Since then Final Fantasy became multiplat in US and EU.
I Have Metal Gear Solid 4 (great game), Socom Confrontations (terrible game) and Resident Evil 5 (awsome game). Final Fantasy is not out yet. I am still happy in my choice because I also have Killzone 2, Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 which are also exclusive titles to the PS3 and they are all great games IMO.
2) The second reason I chose the PS3 was because at the same time I purhcased it I was looking to upgrage to a high def TV. So the PS3's built in Buray player was a huge plus. I found a bundle deal for a Sony 40" LCD 1080p tv, a PS3, a game (Motorstorm), and a Bluray movie (Casino Royal) for $1899 (this was June 2007 that was a great deal at the time).
All in all I love my PS3 and I would not trade it for any other system. I recently put in a 320gb hard drive in it. I have a launch 60gb with PS2 b/c and the media slots.

i own both systems and what you said is pretty spot on.
for anyone who is looking to buy one of the two, the bells and whistles vary, each has their perks and downsides, but the bottom line is that it will come down to games, exclusives...
if you're a guy who just has to have gears of war, or halo, obviously you're decision is going to be made, if you're a god of war freak, or a metal gear guy, obviously that decision is made. because graphically, they look pretty damn identical when matched up...
ps3 online is free, however i think 360 still is a better experience and 50 for the year isn't too bad...
if i absoluely had to choose to buy just one right now i would probably go ps3 because i think it has just a little bit more, with the blu ray and free online, as well as some of the other things it does, but you can't really go wrong with both. on top of that it has been lowered to 300 bucks..
luckily, i got my 360 a few months after it came out for a ridiculously cheap price, and my girlfriend split the ps3 with me...

I have a PS3. To me, it came down to "bang for your buck". And the PS3 won out. Wireless, free online, $299 price, most of the same games I can play on the 360, and my buddy already one too. I miss playing Halo but that's only one game. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Ive had both, I prefer the PS3.
For me I like the PS3 controller, the Blue Ray, free online, internet Browser, Wireless, etc.
I didnt dislike the 360 at all, gameplay and graphics are basically the same. But mine crapped out on me, and EVERY person I know who has one also has had theirs crap out at least once. Their customer support is terrible also.
I actually think the online for Playstation is better than the 360, maybe I have been lucky, but thats just from my experience.

I was not a gamer at all. I needed a BluRay player and heard that the PS3 was a great one plus it plays DVD and CDs and other multimedia. Now I am addicted to the call of duty series and play every night. Where did my free time go??

Thanks all who have responded, I appreciate the info.
I ended up going with the PS3. I got the 160 GB that was bundled with Uncharted-Drakes Fortune.
I am excited to get it hooked up and playing

Sweet, Uncharted has been my favorite game on the system.
I asked for the sequel for Christmas, I hear it's even better than the first, and that says a lot.

Cool. Like I said, you can't go wrong with either. Ideally, I'd want to have both a PS3 and a 360 but that's too much money with $60 video games. However, I wish God of War was on the 360, it was my favorite PS2 game. This is the first generation where I haven't had pretty much every game system out there. I have a Wii(rarely used these days, only if people are over pretty much) and the 360(used pretty much daily). One day, I'll probably buy the PS3, but at that point I'm sure they'll have the XBox 1080 and PS6.

this is obviously a biased opinion,
but ps1 was one of the first cd players i owned, ps2 was the first dvd player i owned, ps3 was the first blu ray player i owned.
so i would say ps3, hope you like your purchase

I've been playing battlefield:bad company. still a lot of people on there. It's lots of fun with vehicles and environmental destruction. A new one comes out in march, but you can probably get the current one for $15-$20 if you're interested. I got mine when circuit city was closing for $17. I have over 8 days logged online on that game.

battlefield 2 is still one of the most fun online games. the only problem is you cant really build your guy up like you can in mw2, but i love the super large maps that you can go on. plus u can ride vehicles

I like that the unlocks aren't necessarily "better" and aren't cumulative. Otherwise, newbies wouldn't stand a chance! From what I've heard of MW2, I prefer the bad company style, as well as special things like mortar strike, c4, and anti-tank mines that you don't have to build a kill streak for.

I haven't been on much lately- holding out for Uncahrted 2 for Christmas. Asked for DJ Hero as well, then M.A.G. early in '10.
I do have Killzone, SOCOM, GTAIV to play online as well as some others.

I purchased my PS3 60GB 3 years ago.
I can't say I play a lot of games on it, actually almost never, but it is one heck of a blu-ray player and does a great job of wirelessly streaming my mp3's from the computer in my office to the 7.1 surround sound system I've set up. I've never had an ounce of a problem with it.

u get a little bit of an advantage when you have built your guy up, but not that much. u basically just unlock different perks and add-ons for your gun, but as a newbie, it doesn't take that long to get goin...

You just have to set your computer up with media server software. Now you have to remember I use a Mac but I'm sure there's a similar animal for the PC. Here's the media server I use.

j/c i see the direction the read took but i wanted to address a lot of wrong information, in case future people deal with a 360 vs ps3 issue. 1) the failure rate of the 360, after switching to the jasper chipset has reduced DRASTICALLY. as in, calculated by a seperate company, the failure rate is now around 4% and the ps3 is not immune to those issues either. i think it's the blinking yellow light that is the equivalent of the red rings of death. 2) at this time, the ps3 is VERY difficult to code for. that means, any game that is not an exclusive to the ps3, the 360 version is always superior. people have 4 years of coding experience on the 360 and the way the cell processor is structured, in addition to their memory structure, lends to very high programming costs. the most recent real world example: Quote:
I love Bayonetta -- just look at my review of the 360 version for proof. But Bayonetta on the PS3 is a whole different beast.
The PS3 version has a lot of problems, primary among them being the excessive slowdown and loading. During certain scenes of high action, Bayonetta can slow down dramatically, enough to affect the gameplay experience. I can usually tolerate that sort of issue to an extent, but the loading problems are simply unacceptable.
This game loads all the time. When the player pauses the game during combat or a cutscene, there's noticeable loading before the pause menu is displayed. There's loading when you pick up an item and there's loading as you scroll through menus. There's even an obnoxious load time just to view a list of save files. For a game that's supposed to emphasize quick action and style, these loads are almost deal-breakers.

3) while the xbox live costs money, there are plenty of times where you can order a 12 month subscription online, through buy.com/newegg/amazon for $30, making it $2.50 a month. further, even in sony's most recent conferences, they constantly reference a new revenue stream through subscription fees for ps3 multiplayer.
that said, you can't really go wrong either way. i think these days, it just comes down to who you know who have what systems. it's multiplayer that make the decision for me and all my buds are on 360 (and i read that the 360 is actually better suited for 1080p through 3rd party analysts of the memory architecture). if and when i want to go to bluray, i'd probably go with a ps3 too.
