I'm looking at the impact of the dynamic safeties in the NFL like Ed Reed, Troy Palamalu (spelling's off I know), Bob Sanders, Darren Sharper, etc. can make on a defense and Berry is the sure-fire thing that will make our secondary upgraded the second he steps on the field for us in 2010.

Unless this Suh character can play linebacker, we don't need him right now (at least not as urgently as we need help elsewhere).

We run a 3-4 and we have, at best, mediocre linebackers across the board. Our best are backups and special teamers on most any other team.
On top of that, the guys behind and outside of our linebackers aren't much better. DLine is the one spot we don't completely suck.

When New England was winning all those superbowls they had 3 first rounders on their D-line and how many great linebackers? If you can get to the QB with three or four players how much better would our D be? How much would Suh help our backers by taking on two blockers keeping them clean? How much would that help this secondary? Come on Rogers is the only beast that we have and Suh is a good one with a chance to play next to a guy that will help him learn the game. If we can't get Suh then get Berry. We need so much but we have to hit on some playmakers and I hope that will be Suh or Berry. NO MORE REACHING. This guy will be a good one, given time, as he has great character. Best player available this year and build for need next year. "God, Please no injuries to whom ever the Browns first rounder is."

I cannot strongly enough emphasize the role that a good pass-rush plays on the success or failure of safeties in the NFL. That isn't to minimize the accomplishments or ability of the safeties you listed, but all good safeties are accompanied by a good front-7.

So it always comes back to the old adage: You build from the inside out.

Fix the lines and the rest of the team tends to be far easier. Bring in the skill positions first and they tend to struggle.

toad...very good point.

One of my favorite sayings when speaking of the offense...Your skilled players will never reach their potential if you don't have a sound offensive line.

Look back to 2007...the Browns had one of the best Olines in the NFL and our skilled position players blossomed...QB-pro bowl...WR-pro bowl...TE-pro bowl..LT-pro bowl.

When the play of the offensive line declined in 2008, so did the production and performance of all of these skilled position players. These players proved they were "capable" of a pro-bowl performance, but without a good offensive line play, these skilled players looked average or below average.

On defense, if you can't stop the run or rush the QB, your defensive backs and LBs are not going to be able to perform to the best of their ability.

There isn't a backer worth a top five pick either..now if the Browns drop down, sure..but if they stay where they're at..I'm taking Suh.

My thinking is Rubin is going to have to step it up.

You got that right.

Sidenote: Rubin's the only player left from our 2008 draft. 'Course that aint saying much.

I just hope this thread goes away soon because I can't stand that Shaun Rogers (no D) name is mispelled.

we got 4 studs if you ask me. JoeT, DQ, Rogers n EW - now 2 out of 4 are on the IR.

Got a feeling its the Achilles Tendon...Robaire meanwhile made ONE HECK of a recovery from that injury. I did not think it was possible. Amazing.

All the Prayers out to Rogers to make a similar Quick and Healthy Recovery

I have really liked the maturation of Rubin btw...we will get a real good look of him.

DL has been our best unit and it is just that A UNIT...that means Depth.

Coleman actually might hurt us more if he disappears...cause neither Mosley nor Corey has played as good as he. 1-15??? yes, a possibility wish it wasn't but got to be real. Trust me it won't have anything to do with Rogers not here nor our injuries. We get good QB play we should win - unless we get a PI call on a Hail Mary with 00 no time on the clock

JMHO

As bad as this sounds....I hope so. Just for the healing aspects of it.

I heard somebody mention broken ankle - But I don't anyone knows for sure. And it should be that way until Rogers announces it... It is his body

Ya didn't hear it from the genius cuz according to todays PD when asked if SRs ankle was broken he said he wouldn't comment on that.Maybe we're playing a trick on the Chargers.

Do we still have to make a roster move.....anybody else feels that we take forever to fill open roster spots? Just another example of EM being in over his head....there should be a list with 20 names on it, right? Seems to be no plan...with Savage I at least remember he signed some PS-guy or FA the SAME or NEXT day somebody on the roster had to be put on IR

Meanwhile....from my "I told you so" tales

Norwood was signed by Philly to their active roster....the guy I was high on when we signed him as UDFA and I predicted to look better in preseason than at least one of our 2nd round WR but to be released because there was no room for him by default...he was the best WR prospect from that Penn State class, yet was not drafted because he's too slim....he's a good slot-WR prospect with #2 upside....now he makes the roster in WR-laden Philly....while we watch Robo on the bench and Massa half assing it on the field or body catch drop every 4th pass...I guess Norwood was just too fast for Mangini's system, which isn't designed for speedy WR who catch passes....Norwood probably isn't a good blocker at his weight...there you have his deficiency...who needs a slot-WR who can't block? Only in EM's head.....

and yes, that's a pro-Heckert argument

Heckert has to be #1 at this point especially if Holmgren is going to be in Seattle...

Hope this answers your question...

Quote:

The Cleveland Browns promoted defensive lineman Brian Schaefering to the active roster from the practice squad today, the team announced.

Meanwhile, running back Jed Collins and defensive back Michael Grant were signed to the practice squad.

Collins and Grant were among the players who tried out for the Browns on Tuesday as well as De De Dorsey and Justin Miller.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Cleveland last year, Schaefering spent one week on the Browns’ practice squad last year before being signed to the New York Jets’ active roster on Dec. 30.

He has spent the first dozen weeks of this season on the Browns’ practice squad.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Philadelphia last year, Collins spent parts of last season on Philadelphia and Cleveland’s practice squad in addition to two weeks on the Browns’ 53-man roster.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Jacksonville last year, Grant spent time on the practice squads of Kansas City and Washington. He was released by the Redskins on Aug. 30.

A four-year letterman at Arkansas, Grant saw action in 44 contests, collecting 154 tackles, 32 passes defensed, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and one sack. As a senior, he recorded a career-high 75 tackles, 20 passes defensed, three interceptions and one forced fumble.

Schaefering for Rogers (No "D") is a good trade. Right?
