Bow hunting was not kind to me - or, I'm not a good bow hunter, however you want to look at it.

Opening day of gun season WAS kind to me - or a deer screwed up, however you want to look at it.

After about 3 hours sitting, I got cold. I stood up, hopped around a bit to get the blood flowing again. I leaned the gun on the tree I was sitting under. Behind me, I heard a "crashing" noise, turned around, and coming straight at me was what looked like at the time about a 10 pt. buck. (only looked like that because as I stood there, gunless, he stopped about 10 feet from me. The look on his face was probably identical to the look on my face )

I reached for my gun, he took off. I took the safety off and he was about 30 yds from me, running away. I didn't have time to grab my blow grunt, so I just grunted myself. He stopped.

He fell about 8 ft. from where I hit him - which is about 1 jump for a deer. I had to drag him about 700-800 yds. through tall grass to get him in the truck. I made it about 40 before I pulled a "Who wants to be a millionaire" and phoned a friend.

He was a big 4 point. Now, for deer hunters, you'll understand what that means. Body was big, very big, for a deer with 4 pts.

When I checked him in there was a guy with a 9 pt and the body wasn't noticeably different from mine.

Regardless, I shoot the first "shootable" deer I see - buck, doe, doesn't matter to me. (although in past years I have passed on yr. old deer) Just so happens this guy happened to be "it" this year.

Congrats

I was hunting, a Man and his son came up to me an hour after I got to my spot, told me that they hunted there the previous year and I should leave, I refused. They sat 30 yards from the base of the tree I was in. I watched the kid pull up on a doe, I shot the deer before he did. Next time they will find a better place to hunt

No silly, that was last year. My friends made fun of me.. They said I killed "bambi's niece" last year. This year it was a much bigger deer. My wife was even impressed with its size.

She told me we'll need a bigger freezer.

Ticks you off, doesn't it?

I hunted today on approximately 30 acres of ground. Aside from the owner, 4 people had permission to hunt there. In fact, 2 of the 4 called saturday and said "hey, we have permission, and Gene told us you do too. Here is where we're going to be, where are you going to be?". Where I like to sit was at the opposite end of where they were going to be.

When I pulled up this morning and started walking, I see someone sitting just about exactly where I would have.

After I shot, within 5 minutes 3 guys come walking up. One said "hey, did you get one of the 3 does that came through?" No, I got this buck. Does Gene know you're out here?"

They left.

Plus, one of the other 3 that DID have permission - I spoke to him later and he said "I put my stand up saturday, and this morning it was gone".

I was very pissed. When I got out of the tree the man called me some names and I told him that I will do the same thing next time if he ever hunts near me again...he went on to tell me he knows who owns the land and it is his right to hunt wherever he wants. Told me that I ruined his sons chance of shooting his first deer...I laughed and got my deer

Hopefully he learned a lesson today

Nice! Way to go Arch! Wish I was up there, some stuff came up that forced me to not make my annual trip this year. Glad you're out there doing well in my place! ;-)

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I saw that guy where I wanted to be...........well, I had permission to be on this ground, he didn't. I wanted to say something, but I went further into the acreage and just forgot about him.

He was the one that wondered if I got one of his does..........

Arch, I took my nephew out for the early youth gun weekend and oddly enough he killed a big bodied 4 point himself. I was astounded to see how large a frame and thick of a neck he had on him and how small a rack he had.

I have two doe so far and am now just stalking the big one that roams my property! Freezers stocked so I'll be patient!

Good luck!!!! You're lucky - around here I can only get 2 - if one of them is with a bow prior to yesterday. Otherwise, I have to go to public ground in Lucas County, and trust me - public ground is NOT where I want to hunt.

No....you aren't legal if you do that....it has to be Bambi's Dad for sure and an in many cases Bambi's Mom.

On average Deer cause 150 people a year to die in auto wrecks, making them the top human predator on the planet.

Shoot all the bear, cougars, and wolves you want. If your goal is to save human life, shoot a deer.

I don't think that makes them a predator, unless they live through the wreck and eat the human corpses. And the top human predator is, has been, and always will be: humans.

Maybe we should work on not driving our high powered machines into unsuspecting animals to prevent more deaths from these predators attacking our helpless cars.

If your goal is to save human life, don't own a gun. Guns kill more people than deer. Research it if you don't believe me.

And fyi, the reason we have too many deer is that we shot all the wolves.

And before your panties get all wadded up, I'm pro 2nd Amendment and am not after your right to shoot animals. Just don't pretend your doing some "service." It's a cowardly sport. Spending time in solitude in nature is great. observing, tracking, even chasing animals - cool. But if you're a real hunter, kill them with your bare hands. Then I'll give you props.

Be a "real" human and live with the amenities you can only build with your own two hands. People like you kill me, you're not "real" if you used technology to do something. Of course you didn't notice that everyone can see in the house you built yourself.

I never have had an issue with people hunting for food. I however will never support hunting for the sport of it.

That said in this day and age were our food is pumped full of crap and with the economy the way it is then I say go for it. There is alot of deer out there and the meat is better than most that is available.

I was out as well yesterday (and heading out this afternoon). Saw a buck munching in a field about 500 yards from my stand on the morning. Nothing else all day. The shot numbers were down from years' past. I was just south of Vermilion in the morning, and about 20 minutes south of that on this other plot of the land the same farmer owns. Saw a lot of hunters though.

Heading back out this afternoon....Tuesday (after opening day) hunting sucks...deer are bunkered down.

And hunt for food is what I do.....I shoot the first deer big enough to shoot - I don't shoot bambi's - although like I said, I got made fun of last year for the size of doe I shot. (good natured fun, of course) First deer I can get, I do. That also consists of having a good shot. I have never had to shoot twice at a deer. Not cause I'm the greatest shot, but because I don't take a shot that isn't within my range.

I've shot running deer - running at an angle to me - so I could hit close to the right area, and like this one - he was running away from me. If he hadn't stopped and turned when I grunted - no way I shoot. (mainly because I've seen too many gut shot deer - ain't no way I'm cleaning one of those. Also, shooting them in the butt as they run away doesn't lend itself a fun gutting experience either.)

If you read my entire post, you'd see I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm mocking peen's statement that deer are predators of humans because they get hit by people driving their cars into them. That's like saying guns kill people. In both cases, its the dumb human who causes the death.

I missed the sarcasm in your post, I guess....and I still don't see it.

I do agree that they aren't predators of humans, though. Well, unless they are like those silly squirrels in the commercials that run out in front of you on purpose.

Got back at 9:15.....a friend called a little after 5. Said he had a big deer, needed help to drag it out. When I got there I had to walk about 300 yds. to where he was - he shined his flashlight to let me know I was close. But he was on the other side of a small river, so I had to walk back about 200 yds to cross, then met up with him. I asked him where it was. Another friend got there.

The shooter said "I shot it right over there, then it went a little bit, and I hit it again, over there. I think". Long story short, we spent over an hour looking for a trail. Finally found a spot - no where near where he thought he hit it. Then we lost the trail.

One guy went off just looking - and about 50 yds away he found it......beautiful, big 8 pt. Great size.

No easy way to get it out though......took all 3 of us dragging, and many rest breaks.

Finally got it out. It's hanging beside mine in the barn. A lot of meat on that thing........

2 less deer for tyler to worry about hitting in n.w. ohio.

No - just kind of an estimate. http://www.whitetails.com/deer_info/weight_estimation.cfm

Just found this. The chest on my deer is 39" which puts it at about 170 lbs.......The chest on my friends is 43", which puts it at about 220 pounds. Dang, I didn't realize that. I know it's only an estimation, but wow!

No luck for me yesterday. Work is getting in the way the rest of the week, and I have to get back to Chicago on Thursday. May have to wait until the 2 day gun season or muzzleloader to get it done...

Shot the smallest buck I've ever bagged this year after he ran into me . Yes he literally ran into me , ok it was more of a brush but he surprised the heck out of me . Was on a deer trail behind a big tree and he approached ( ran like hell ) from the blind side going up hill and whooosh ! Did not see the numbers this year as in previous years .

I spent last night skinning and quartering my deer, and my friends deer. Even had a few beers, believe it or not.

Today I didn't work.....my wife and I got the meat almost all boned, and we ground quite a bit. Then we had to leave for our Wii bowling league.

Tomorrow morning we'll finish the boning and grinding - wow, that sounds sexy doesn't it? - get everything packaged and frozen, and we'll be done with it.

Don't know where you hunt - but the deer are there. Be glad you got one. My bro in law has been out all week - he's a "picky" hunter, where I am not. He had a 6 pt. in his sights........but, according to him he had just cleaned his black powder rifle and it misfired - 3 times in a row. First, when he had a coyote in his sights, second, when he had the 6 pt. in his sights, and 3rd, when he just wanted to shoot.

Don't know about all that jazz - seems kinda fishy to me, but it could happen.

Anyway, deer in the freezer is a good thing. Even small deer.

Just a final update: We got 35 steaks from the backstraps and loins. Not huge ones, but bigger than I've ever gotten before. Probably average size is 5-6 ounces?

We still have 2 big bowls - probably 25 to 30 pounds to grind, but we have 18 1 pound bags in the freezer already. This year we're mixing it with sausage - 25% sausage, 75% venison.

Plus, we have enough to can....maybe 8-10 quart jar range? We have a christmas to attend here shortly, so we'll probably finish the "hamburger" tonight - maybe tomorrow after church. The canning will be done tomorrow - and we're done.

Like doing it, but it's always nice to have it DONE.

Probably total meat from the deer in the 65 to 70 lb range????

Me got a nice button buck again something about me & button bucks, was going after a nice doe, but got a nice heart shot @ 40 yards on the dead run. but anyway got meat in the freezer,

Just curious arch, but why would he shoot at a coyote? Surely he doesn't eat coyote meat.... does he? If he ain't gonna eat it, why kill it?
I know some coyotes get shot because they chase, kill and eat deer... which is what a coyote is supposed to do but hunters don't like it.
