Is it a coincidence that the team seems to show a little more fire since he's been gone? I've never questioned his work ethic, but as a leader in the locker room I think his complaining and moping attitude this year might have rubbed off on the other players....especially after that horrendous start of the season. I don't question Jamal's work ethic but I do question his motivation. He really had none.
With the young guys in running the ball, they have something to prove so they've got that extra hop in their step.

More addition by subtraction.....Jamal Lewis, Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow.....all whiners both in the locker room (I presume a bunch here) and in the media. If anyone caught the NFL Network interview with Josh Cribbs following the Stiller game, he is the exact opposite. He spoke of how he will let his play on the field dictate his value and that with the economy what it is and people in the blue collar towns struggling that nobody wanted to hear him whine about money. He spoke of how he loved Cleveland, loved the fans, and that he and the other players knew how important the Pittsburgh game was. Class act.

What he did was worse than someone just complaining. The minute we started losing (last year) he started seperating himself from the team. For a team captain and supposed leader he represented the team horribly.

I don't know about behind the scenes, but on field production has improved drastically. It's nice seeing guys who can cut the ball outside when the hole collapses. It's nice seeing 2 or 3 steps in the backfield as opposed to 35.

Sad and funny....but true.

His talk about retiring, saying he's done all he can to to help this team, complaining about practices, saying Art's a great guy, etc. Are you serious? (Unless in the locker room he's the exact opposite of the Jamal Lewis we've seen in the interviews and pressers.)

I think if anything that some of these new players are taking advantage of the opportunity and playing their butts off. I believe when some players get their big contracts that some are not giving it 100% and rather just going through the motions.
This is sort of like when I hire my employees. It seems that the longer they work for me the more secure they get in their jobs and they tend to start slacking a bit. However my new employees seem to work harder because they want to earn their positions.

He had plenty of motivation: He had a bone to pick so he aired out his dirty laundry.
The end result? His broken-down arse landed on the bench, out of the teams eye, and the spirit of the team improved.
Lewis was never a good "team leader." He was a respected vet. Those are two very different things.
And to J, yeah, it was either Grossi or Pluto who last week hinted that since Lewis has been removed from the eyes of the team they've not been as negative or mopey.
Mangini handled that situation perfectly.

I have to disagree bro, Braylon, and Winslow... YES... but Lewis had the respect and ear of the team in the locker room.

He might have had the respect of the team, but was he influencing the team negatively about Mangini?

The Browns running attack was too predictable with Lewis. Run it between the tackles and you have a choice of 4 locations. Run it to the outside and there are 2 more options and much more ground to cover.
Teams have to respect the ability to rush outside. Cribbs and Jennings were able to turn the corner on the Steelers last week. It will open up the inside game as well.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Getting Lewis off the field and out of the locker room is one of the best things that could have happened to this team. He was baggage in both.

This is true...I was hoping for alittle more "Team Leader" when he came here.
It is nice to see some new faces in the backfield and alittle more spring in the offense's step!!

True statement. I'll even bet Jamal spouts off several more idiotic statements about the Browns organization after the season ends.

Absolutely Shep!
Furthermore, there may be more fire because all the old has beens are hurt, forcing the younger, more althletic players to the field.
Watching these guys dial it up against Pitt makes me seriously wonder who has been doing the player evals......

Might be the result of motivation via success. We need young legs. Obvious that two point yds per wasn't getting it. Sorry to see it end like this for him. Hard working big heart guy IMO. I respect him. Never mailed one in.

So true, but he "mailed" this situation in,...ruined any possible chance at all of being the Browns next RB coach. Not sayin' he could, or even wanted to be after retiring, but he slammed that window on his own fingers.

I doubt most of the players are thinking negatively about Mangini. Usually HCs that lose the team lose at the end of the season. The Browns seem to be coming together as a team at the end.
