I get why the Rooney Rule is there and I agree with it. I think teams should be allowed to bypass it by donating to a charity ($500,000).

but what happens if a certain team just ups and pays that donation penalty every single time it has an opening.....bad publicity for the NFL, they won't risk that.

The reason it's been mentioned in Jest is that the person you interview has to be a real candidate.. Jim Brown isn't and I think that the league would see right past that one.

Good point, Daman, and I do realize that it's true.

If I have one complaint with Randy through this process, it's that he didn't interview a minority some time in the period between Kokinis and Holmgren. During that span, any interview would have seemed more legit than any that could be done now. It would have been more proactive, and could have paved the way for Holmgren to be hired at any time.

Then again, I guess we really don't know for sure if Lerner DIDN'T interview a minority.

some places are intimating that the Fred Nance interview may have covered the bases even though he only took the "general counsel" title when he was hired (they would have to claim the interview was for the grand pubah position)

Then make the penalty/donation very high, like $1 million or more. It's bad to bypass the rule but it's also bad to have a fake interview with Jim Brown too.

It's a good policy that should stay in place until the old bias is finally overtaken.

It's a stupid policy and the "old bias" will be overcome by two things and only two things... one, as old guard ownership gets out of the game and ownership transfers to younger folks... and second, as black coaches and GMs are hired and have success, the old guard will be forced to change...

20 years ago black quarterbacks were a total rarity.. now you have McNabb, Culpepper, Russell, Young, Campbell, Gerrard, and probably more that I don't care to sit here and remember.... they are not a rarity, they are not scorned, they are drafted and some are drafted #1 in the draft... not because teams were FORCED to entertain black QBs, but because NFL teams want to win and to win you go get the best people and owners and GMs realized that...

Well, forcing a team to interview a minority candidate wouldn't be real if you've already made up your mind too. So in a sense, it would be the same thing.

I agree with you,, but that's apparently not the way the League looks at it.. what can I say...

Now wait,,, there isn't any reports out there saying that he DIDN'T interview a minority candidate between the firing of Koks and the interview of Holmgren.

Nobody said they hadn't, nobody has said they have.. It's an unknown

Bonciewicz, the spokesman for the Browns is saying they are talking to the league about this issue.. I know it's far fetched, but they could be looking for a ruling on a candidate they interviewed already..

This whole Rooney Rule, while I understand it, isn't being managed correctly IMO. THere first has to be a decent sized crop of legit candidates out there. And there doesn't appear to be.. I suppose there are some that appear ready to grow into the job.. But that's not what the Browns want..

From the Press Releases posted in the information section of this site:

Quote:

There are currently five African-American senior club football operations executives; ROD GRAVES (Arizona), MARTIN MAYHEW (Detroit), OZZIE NEWSOME (Baltimore), JERRY REESE (New York Giants) and RICK SMITH (Houston). Newsome and Smith are members of the league's Competition Committee. The league's senior football executive, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations RAY ANDERSON, is African-American.

That's the list of Minority guys in the jobs today... they are off limits.. we can't touch them.. unless we are willing to offer them a promotion.

Others that have been mentioned are Jeremy Green and Tony Dungy (My guess is Dungy doesn't want anything at the moment...)

Jeremy Green is a good guy,, but he's no Mike Holmgren.. Given the choice,, it's Holmgren.

As I said above, the browns have said they want to hire a credible top football guy. A rookie GM/Czar/VP Football operations (no matter how well qualified on paper) isn't going to meet that criteria....

Legitimatly, there may not be a minority candidate that fits the description of what the Browns want. At least not thier stated description of the person...

Just checking:

Mayhew is still with the Lions
Graves is still with the Cards
Reese is still with the Giants
Smith is sitll with the Texans
Newsome is obviously still with Baltimore.

Ozzie is the only guy on that list I'm familiar with so I can't comment on the rest.

Is there anyone on that list that anyone thinks the Browns should go after and make President of the club? Besides Ozzie I mean?

For what it's worth, I think this could be sold to the League.....

Nope, said he didn't want to get into any of it.

What else could he say? He can't tip his hand. The only possible news he could have given was that he was taking the Browns job or a different one.

He's not talkin'.

They are gonna ask him about CLeveland in a moment.. let's see what he says.

Yeah, being out here for 9 years now, attending 20-25 Seahawks games the last 6 years, and paying attention to the team, listening to him and PNW sportcasters - there's no question that he and his wife are very high quality people.

Last thing they said was that they'd talk about a certain team in the midwest after the break they're on. I suspect he'll talk high level about the trip and things he liked but not comment on offers/next steps...
