Mike Holmgren turns down Seattle Seahawks position; expects to inform Browns of decision by Monday

Associated Press The opportunity to possibly return to the sidelines with the Browns may have induced Mike Holmgren to turn down a front-office position with Seattle on Saturday.KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Browns are closer to securing a deal with Mike Holmgren after he declined an offer for a senior leadership position with the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.

It's quite possible the allure of resuming his career as a coach -- an option not available in Seattle -- may sway Holmgren to the Browns.

Holmgren is expected to notify the Browns of his decision by Monday.

The Seahawks put out a news release late Saturday saying team officials, including CEO Tod Leiweke, had met with Holmgren but he declined the offer. Leiweke said the Browns' pursuit of Holmgren and the former coach's desire to resolve his situation quickly spurred the meeting.

"We hold Mike in high regard and wish the Holmgren family the very best with their new horizons," Leiweke said.

The release quoted Holmgren as saying: "I sincerely thank Paul Allen and Tod for all their support over the years. I thank them for reaching out to me and we conclude these discussions as friends."

Speaking on his radio show in Seattle on Friday, Holmgren for the first time brought up the possibility of coaching the Browns. Holmgren was 161-111 in 17 years as a coach in the NFL with the Seahawks and Green Bay, winning a Super Bowl with the Packers.

Holmgren, who interviewed with the Browns on Monday and Tuesday, has called the chance to work for the Browns "about as good a job situation as you could ask for in this business."

Holmgren declines offer to rejoin Seahawks in senior position
Associated Press

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks have said that Mike Holmgren will not rejoin the team.

The Seahawks talked with Holmgren over the weekend about a senior leadership position.

"After a series of respectful discussions, Mike has declined our offer to rejoin the team given the structure we proposed," Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke said in a statement. "We hold Mike in high regard and wish the Holmgren family the very best with their new horizons."

The 61-year-old Holmgren won a Super Bowl with the Packers and led the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance as a head coach.

"I sincerely thank Paul Allen and Tod for all their support over the years," Holmgren said in a statement. "I thank them for reaching out to me and we conclude these discussions as friends."

Holmgren has also been interested in joining the Cleveland Browns. He spent two days meeting with Browns owner Randy Lerner earlier this week.

Holmgren said on his radio show in Seattle on Friday that he planned to give Lerner an answer "sooner than later" but added there was no definite timetable. It may have accelerated after he declined an offer to rejoin the Seahawks.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for anybody," Holmgren said of his visit to Cleveland. "It's about as good a job situation as you could ask for in this business."

I think that's the kicker statement in that article. How confining was that proposed structure? Just enough to insure MH wouldn't take the position yet save face for both parties, I'd say.

It's not the first time we've heard "coach" mentioned. In the Friday interview he said "All options were open to him". So would Randy allow him to coach and GM? Or would Holmgren and Randy together hire a GM? Too many qustions!

Love the idea of him being on the sidelines but not more than the idea of us getting our behind the scenes act together for a change.

Some interesting times ahead should this hiring be finalized!

That's my take as well.. for what it's worth, I think they had to make some gesture or ovature. On his radio show, he really backed them into the corner... Holmgren is a very smart guy. He played that perfectly.. JMO

I just don't think that he is going to coach again.
He stated that he would answer directly to the owner with no layers in between.
This is not how a "coach" position operates.
I know right now that Mangini technically doesn't have anyone between him and Lerner, but that's not how it was originally designed.
I listened to the radio show Holmgren had on Friday and I've been trying to read between the lines on everything he has said.
My feeling is Lerner offered him the ability to build this franchise the way he sees fit. From top to bottom, no questions asked, and with an open checkbook (within reason of course).
That is Holmgren's dream job!
Holmgren was relieved of GM responsibilities in Seattle, but wearing a coaches hat and a GM hat is just too much for one man. Try doing your job and your bosses job at the same time and see if you can do either one or both efficiently. The only logical choice was to just have him focus on coaching.
We are in for a total restructuring of the organization, again unfortunately.
This is taking a step back to run forward type situation. I think we're going to end up with an allstar type front office and coaching staff. There are alot of his people, good people not coaching right now.
Here we go again Brown's fans, but I think this is just the beginning of our reign.
Bout freaking time!

I'm reading posts on other boards that Lerner is going to allow Holmgren to be coach, GM, President and whatever else he'd wish. I wish folks would or could think it through or read and or listen before making those snap judgements! The pro Mangini folks who just weeks ago would have strung him up like Mussolini are now entrenching themselves firmly on his side.

I guess that's what one, ugly, long overdue Steeler win will do! But mostly I think they are protecting their "I love to bitch about the Browns" lifestyle!

Love it or not, we are about to enter a new realm here. It might be great or it could be mediocre. I don't think it will be a mess but it will be different!

While it seems encouraging that Holmgren may come here, I'll say that I'm not getting too excited until he signs on the dotted line. Cautious optimism, with emphasis on "cautious."

I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
