Cribbs: New deal by end of season

Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio -- Josh Cribbs hopes his patience is finally going to pay off in a big way.

Cribbs had expressed optimism this week that he'd get a new deal with the Browns. On Thursday, he told The Associated Press why he was encouraged: Cribbs said the Browns told him during the team's bye week they want to have a new contract in place by the end of the season, ending what has been a sticky negotiation since training camp.

"They told me they wanted to do something before the year was over," Cribbs said. "Coach [Eric] Mangini has been optimistic about it as well. He's told me directly I deserve a new contract and he would work to get it done."

Cribbs wouldn't say specifically who told him the deal could be finalized by the end of the season, only that it happened while the Browns were off the weekend of Nov. 8.

In their first game following the open week, Cribbs was carted off the field on a stretcher following the final play of the team's loss to Baltimore on Monday Night Football. He said then that the entire situation increased his urgency to get a new deal done.

Cribbs has three years left on his existing deal, but believes he merits a raise now. By far the most dynamic player on the Browns roster, Cribbs has blossomed into an integral part of the offense after building a reputation as a special teams star his first four years in the NFL.

Mangini on Thursday again declined to offer a timeline to complete a new deal for Cribbs.

Cribbs began voicing his displeasure with his contract over the summer, when he sat out voluntary minicamps. But he reported to training camp on time and has done all that has been asked of him by the new Browns' coaching staff.

"I'm very happy with the way I handled it," Cribbs said. "I kept my head down and just kept playing."

Negotiations could get slowed again by the Browns' search for a new head of football operations.

The team brought in Mike Holmgren this week, but he left town without a new contract. Cribbs feels he's already been burned once by a regime change. Cribbs has maintained he was promised by owner Randy Lerner after last season he would get a new deal, but that changed when former GM Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel were fired and Mangini was hired.

With talk of a restructured football operation again bubbling up, Cribbs acknowledged he's concerned he'll have to start all over again.

"How many more times do I have to prove myself?" he said.

How dare Mangini do this!

I don't know exactly what it is yet, but somehow Mangini is doing this for his own twisted, evil, self-serving purposes.

I'm sure someone will think and speak of it eventually

If Mary Kay Cabot is accurate, then there is way more to it than Manginis game..

Josh Cribbs pushing Cleveland Browns for new deal before season's end
By Mary Kay Cabot
December 16, 2009, 8:48PM

Thomas Ondrey / The Plain Dealer"I would definitely appreciate a deal before the end of this football season," Josh Cribbs said Wednesday. "It would show a lot of loyalty on (the Browns') behalf." BEREA, Ohio -- Josh Cribbs said in a radio interview Wednesday he's convinced his new contract will be in place by the end of the season -- and the Browns have incentive to do so.

"My timetable is before the season ends," Cribbs told Sirius NFL Radio. "I'm convinced [it will get done]. Definitely. Within the next three weeks definitely. I would definitely appreciate a deal before the end of this football season. It would show a lot of loyalty on their behalf.

"You know, I've been here from the beginning and steadfast with this football team and I feel like I've not caused a disturbance to where I'd let this off-the-field issue come on the field. And it hasn't affected the players in any way. I feel like I've held up my end pretty good and, like I said, I'm just going to keep playing football and let that speak for itself. That's my leverage."

The Browns' incentive for getting the deal done before the final game Jan. 3 is that the signing bonus would be tacked onto this year's base salary and would count against the 2009 cap. The Browns are believed to have plenty of cap space available. A roster-type bonus paid in March would go on the 2010 cap.

Problem is, the Browns are involved in talks with Mike Holmgren to take over football operations, and may want to leave such a major decision to him.

Browns coach Eric Mangini said last week the team was moving forward on a new deal and that he imagined something would get done.

"I feel like, what more do I have to prove?" Cribbs said. "That's how I feel. My own guys come up to me on the team asking me, 'Hey, what more do you have to prove?' When your own guys are telling you this and speaking up for you, that's a good feeling. It lets you know that you're doing good by them first, your teammates, the players that you're fighting for. And if I don't get a deal done, you know, I'll be really, really upset, really disappointed in the organization but I'll cross that bridge when it comes."

Cribbs signed a six-year contract with his previous agents through 2012 worth $6.77 million.

Check out the bolded comment.. it appears there are CAP Implications.... Seems smart to do it now.. Well, at least based on that comment anyway.

Once the Browns determine whether he's a wr, or rb, it will help determine where his salary should start. He's a premier special teams player, which makes his current contract fair, but, the fact that he excels as a qb/rb in the wildcat formation does increase his value and should net him a better contract.

Toad had, tongue in cheek, railed against Mangini, as so many posters here do for everything that has ever gone wrong in the history of the universe.

So, following along with that, I made fun of the posters who blame Lerner for everything.

I can draw you a diagram if that would help.

Well, it's not about determining what position he is. His case in terms of fair salary is probably the most unique in the league in the past couple of decades.

He is the rare special-teamer who not only returns punts but kickoffs as well. There aren't that many of those in the league or even the history of the league. The fact he works as a gunner as well is also unique.

Further muddying up the waters is the fact that he has value as a wildcat/gadget guy.

He shouldn't get Devin Hester money (4 years $40 million. $15 million guaranteed with a $5 million SB and all kinda of workout and roster bonuses) but it will be close. Cribbs can do more things on special teams but nobody in the league will mistake him for a true receiver. Hester has 54 catches for almost 700 yards this year. Cribbs has value, but not that kind of value.

I do have to say............I think it's kinda entertaining how many people feared the Browns would stick it to him. The only real problem, as many had laid out before, was that the beginning of the year was just too soon to rework a contract he'd just signed a couple of years ago. This was always the predicted path. All's well that ends well.

Fill the rest of the 2009 cap with a "bonus" then give him a modest salary from there on out.

Problem solved...I think.

You left out that he also makes a ton of special teams tackles on the other side. The kid does whatever you ask him to do, he'd probably play nose tackle and give it his all if they asked him to. He is just a football player, there really is no other way to put it.

you know, you think that....but then the player's agent starts getting in his ear next year telling him...

"look at what you are making this year compared to playerX" totally ignoring that the upfront bonus $$ was part of the deal.

this is what led to TO leaving Philly...I know, bad example because that's TO, but it has happened with more sane people as well.

If your looking at this years stats then Cribbs has far more value. Hester (outside of WR) only returns punts anymore and is only averaging only 8.1 yards per return. Cribbs is far more productive and can play QB, RB, WR and is the best Special Teamer in the league. Wasn't he also talked about playing some defense in preseason? Our two wins can be credited to the plays he made more than any other player on our team.

So..............You want to discount Hester's receiving numbers........the real reason he got that big contract..........then turn around and say Cribbs can play QB AND RB?

That's quite a reach.

I get that Cribbs does work as a gunner as well, which is something else Hester doesn't do.

However, as for punt return average, those numbers are very much going to fluctuate based on the unit's play as a whole.

Last year Cribbs averaged that exact same 8.1 yards per return. Our special teams units were not good.

If Cribbs excel at another position I'd agree, but while more versatile, I can't say I see how his contract should exceed Hesters.

If Holmgren follows football at all in his current retirement, he'll be thrilled the team signed Cribbs to a new deal. He is truely one of the best weapons on the team and in the NFL.

If I'm not mistaken Hester got his 40 million dollar extension right before the 2008 season which means he got it mostly because of his impact as a returner. Prior to that he had only 20 catches to his name. Correct me if I'm wrong. I know you will.

I'm not saying he should get more but in your post you said he shouldn't get Devin Hester money. I personally think he should at least get that if going by stats and/or player skill.

hmmm.........Says here his contract was signed July 27, 2008. Which indeed was before the 2008 season. He may have been their number one WR going into the season but like I said even at that time he had only 20 career receptions. Most players get big extensions due to past contributions and not because of potential at a position that they were (at that time) trying him at.

I didn't really read the previous posts but would just like to say that no player in the NFL deserves a raise more than Josh Cribbs. He is something like the 30th highest paid player on the Browns. Just pay the guy.

I understand that and I still think Cribbs deserves those numbers in comparison. He's proved that he can be used in more positions than Hester can and be very effective. Isn't there talk of him even being used as a running back in a regular set as well? That is some versatility there. IMO he brings more to the table than Hester does.

In the off-season there was also talk of Cribbs being used on defense.

I'll believe Cribbs as a RB when I see it.

The Bears were looking at trying to take care of Hester as a unique talent and in the seasons prior to the extention, one of the most dangerous return men in the NFL.

They had used him at times at WR kind of like Cribbs the last 2 years trying to get the ball in their best playmakers hands. When Hester was looking for an extention the Bears decided to make him a full time WR (hoping to be their #1) to justify the amount of money they were investing in him.

As you pointed out in an earlier post, since the Bears signed him to extension he no longer returns kicks and thus shot themselves in the foot.

While I agree that Cribbs is great on special teams and will do anything the team asks, we could not live with him as our #1 WR. Certainly, he deserves a pay increase and a contract extention but we would be foolish to pay him Hester-type money.

I think Cribbs deserves about $4-5 million per year. Give him a 4 year/$20 million deal and get it over with. He's definitely earned it, but I don't see him getting anywhere near $10 million/year..that would be ludicrous.

Most, but not all, which was exactly why Hester got the deal. They envisioned him becoming a legit wideout which is exactly what he's become, thus justifying the contract. They saw in him the ability to be a legit receiver. Nobody can say the same about Cribbs.

$10M/year would be insane for any player on this team.

My prior suggestions was to give him a $12-$15M signing bonus now, then a $2-$3M salary and wrap him up for the next 6 years. That'll give him near a tidy $30M, that should be plenty good and it won't break the bank and it is in line with his contributions to the team, and he'll in all liklihood then retire a BROWN.

I don't think they'd go that route, as that'd be handing over a big sum of money early in his contract. I do understand why, as that SB would be allocated to this year's cap, but I think that could be a tad too risky.

I think what's more likely is that they give him another SB, say something like $5-$7 million, another set of incentives, and then roster bonuses that equate out to a million or two per season on top of an average salary around what you suggested. That doesn't include all the fluffy workout bonuses he'll obviously get. In that way, the club is protected in case he suffers a career-ending injury.

Without a defined position, he doesn't have much of a chance of taking a hardline stance for big money, so while he deserves to be paid as the top special-teamer in the league, his contributions in the wildcat add a little but not much to that value.

Perhaps... but what I laid out isn't much of a risk, or much of an expense... and I think it is a very fair contract for a player of his caliber - AND it allows us to take the hit for most of it on this season.

Contradicting myself here but I agree with you. I guess my thinking is that if I had my choice between the two I would pick Cribbs over Hester. That is why I feel he should be paid as well as Hester is. However you are right 10 million a year is alot.

I think Cribbs deserves a new contract but the timing of this seems very odd to me. We are currently in search of someone to run our organization. Whether that be a GM a President of Football Operations or both.

Wouldn't it be that persons job to make a decision on Cribbs and his contract. I would think the owner wouldn't sign off on any deal without getting this done first.

So while we think Cribbs should get paid who exactly is making that decision. I'm thinking the guy that will ultimately deal with this issue isn't even employed by the team yet and if so Cribbs contract would be the furthest thing from his mind right now.

The driving factor is that any signing bonuses count against this year's cap, so it becomes an organizational thing even if a grand Poobah isn't in place.

BUT, we have until the end of the year, so if we're close to signing a guy like Holmgren, we would probably hold off and let that person give their stamp of approval. However, if we're not, it wouldn't be standing on anyone's toes if we do something that takes care of the organization first.

As good as Cribbs is, he isn't a quarterback or a guy that's about to get a $50 million dollar deal. His deal is going to be rather inconsequential in terms of the big picture which a Czar would concern himself with.

just clicking on you

i think this is one of the reasons, of unfortunately many, why we are and have been since our return a joke of a franchise. we miss on so many players but when we actually find a great one we don't take care of him. you can make any argument you want about josh's worth, position or lack thereof, longetivity, etc... but the fact of the matter is josh cribbs is the best football player we have on this team and the only person you can even argue for that esteemed honor is shaun rogers. he also happens to be one of the best human beings we have on the team. should he be making shaun rogers salary? i personally dont think so, but that isnt my decision to make. however, its very clear to pretty much anyone that we are not doing right by josh cribbs and something needs to be done to remedy that sooner rather than later.

Sometimes I don't know where you come up with this stuff, but it sure is entertaining.

Why does it matter if the guy plays a skill position or not? He's a game changer at what he does. You too often let traditional thinking cloud your stance without evaluating a situation on it's own merits.

Would you actually take Hester over Cribbs? If you answer yes, I'll only assume you are not typing it with a straight face. To say Cribbs is the best football player on this team is almost an insult on a team in need of a serious talent upgrade. However, you can't tell me he wouldn't be one of the best football players on any team in this league. That's the true measure of his value.

Out of the box thinking bro ... everything is not black and white. BTW, is that why you choose that font color?

We better reward him and reward him well. He deserves it. He's earned it. And thank God he's not asking you to go to bat for him.

Hmmmm, we can make as much of this as we want to. The new GM might not approve of the contract or want to do it themselves .... sure, OK. Sometimes it seems people just like to hear themselves talk.

Given Cribbs performance on the field does anyone really, REALLY believe that any new Czar, GM, or Coach would object to Josh Cribbs being signed to a new deal?

Just sign the guy already and make him a Brown for life, plain and simple.

Ironic, since it's traditional thinking that is narrowing your perception of what I said, creating a situation where you've missed the point.

Because he doesn't have a defined position, he can't take someone's big-money contract from the league and say "Look, my numbers are better than this guys, so if I don't get paid like him, I'm going to sit." He can't ask for Hester money because he isn't a receiver. It can be debated as to whether or not he brings more value to our team, but it terms of whether a receiver gets paid more or a special-teamer gets paid more, it's no contest: The receiver gets more.

Follow the bouncing ball here Rish ..............He can't demand a $15 million dollar SB because he just doesn't have a regular, definable position. SO, if you go back to what I said previously, his Wildcat contributions add a little something to his value, but let's be honest with ourselves: Don't you think you could put any number of guys back there to run a sweep out of that formation? Cribbs can't throw the ball. He sucks. He's been picked trying to do it and the other throw I remember was way off as well. He's no traditional RB. That all means his value is as the best special-teamer in the league plus a little more. Unfortunately for Cribbs, even though he has earned the raise, he also doesn't play a regular position, and players who don't play regular positions just don't get.........and can't demand........big-money deals.

Out of the box thinking bro ... everything is not black and white. BTW, is that why you choose that font color?

We better reward him and reward him well. He deserves it. He's earned it. And thank God he's not asking you to go to bat for him.

Why, because I'm not dropping to my knees and praying to the Browns to back up the Brinks truck?

All I'm doing is discussing where his contract range should fall. Nothing more. Prple and I debated how his contract should be structured. If I didn't think he's earned a raise, I wouldn't have done that. All I'm doing is chewing the fat on what he should get paid.

Keep this in mind: When he went on his PR campaign to get a new deal at the beginning of the year, I railed against him. Why? Because he hadn't outplayed the contract he'd signed? No. It was because it was simply too early to ask for a new deal so shortly after he'd signed his previous one. Did that have anything to do with his ability? Did that have anything to do with a belief that he should or shouldn't get a raise? Again, the answer is no. It was nothing more than talking the nuts-and-bolts of a contract situation, which is all I'm doing here.

It becomes WAY too easy to take comments as meaning something they don't. It happens to me all the time around here. I can say I don't believe Cribbs should get Hester-money, and suddenly that means I don't think he deserves a raise.

Thinking outside of the box............indeed.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

I never said you said he didn't deserve a raise. You know that.

But the above quote is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. You argue as if you've been in a village with no TV for the last 4 years. Upon your return to the States, you get briefed on a situation, apply traditional rules to it, and assume that's the right way to go even though you haven't seen a single play in four years. It's as if you hadn't actually seen the games ... or have a true sense of the situation at hand. You can't evaluate the situation on it's own merits so you evaluate it the exact same way you would any other guy who thinks he's underpaid and under contract. I don't believe that applies with Cribbs.

All I can reiterate again is thankfully you are not going to bat for him and thankfully you don't work for the Browns.

The rest of the your post was just more Toad ... follow the bouncing ball, eh? ... spin, spin, spin, spin ... can you just make the name change now from OverToad to OverSpider ...?

...eh, wait ... probably not. It's not common to change names midstream, and we should stick to that line of the thinking ... even though it would be appropriate ... LOL ...

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Like it ir not, with a new regime likely to be installed it remains to be seen if Cribbs fits their plans.

He could very well be used a s a pawn to garner more draft picks via trade.

I hope not as I love the guys loyalty, toughness and attitude! I'm not however, wanting to see him overpaid! We have too much to do.
