The deal is done, a new foundation has been laid, a trustworthy football mind has at last been installed!
Seems he will hire a GM and go from there. Will it be a rock solid, experienced guy on his level or will we see an heir apparent come forth and learn from "The Big Show"!
GM speak only, too early for coach talk please!

Could Holmgren still be GM too? I haven't heard any official announcement on his duties yet.

I'm guessing it'll be some guy most of us have never heard of, who's worked with Holmgren before.

I'm thinking also there's a pretty sharp YOUNG guy out there somewhere who MH has worked with. It would be a good move if so to ensure continuity we all consider so important.
I think he'll be very involved but not title himself GM.

Call me nostalgic but I still want Marty to be either in a GM role or a Head coaching role....I would assume GM because he is enjoying his life outside of coaching so much maybe something with less stress would work better for him.

I have confidence in the man he appoints. Since he will over see most, if not all of the football operations, the new GM will have to be a good football mind with a proven track record.

I would think it's possible.. But there is a reason that the traditional FO set up has worked so well for so many years... So if I were a betting man, either this year, or next, a GM will be in place...
Just a guess however...

It's all anyone's really doing now. Here's my prediction:
GM: Someone none of us have heard of. HC: 25% chance Mangini; 75% chance someone who runs Holmgren's system, but isn't real well known. OC: Someone who runs Holmgren's system, but isn't well known. Jim Zorn has an outside chance. DC: 50/50 Rob Ryan or someone else.

I would expect Holmgren to pick somebody that can not only help now but is mature and advanced enough to replace him at his position when he steps down after his second super bowl victory.

Maybe this guy. Quote:
Will Lewis joined the Seahawks' football operations staff as the team's Director of Pro Personnel on May 20, 1999, following three years with the Green Bay Packers (1997-99) scouting department. With the Packers, he worked closely with Seahawks' Executive Vice President & Head Coach Mike Holmgren.
Seems to have spent all his time on the pro side though, with no college scouting background.

It's been reported that Gruden is locked in contractually to ESPN next year.
Zorn was bad as an OC and likely won't get another shot. He's much more likely to be our QB's coach, where he was beloved in Seattle.
Kosar? I have no idea, but it looks like he's getting a gig somewhere. The question becomes whether or not Lerner wants him as an adviser or if Holmgren "names" him to his staff (ie: forced down his throat by Lerner).
I sure as Hell don't see Holmgren going away from the WCO. That would be idiotic considering it's the offense he's known his entire professional career and won Super Bowls with.

I completely agree, I want this team to run the WCO with Brady Quinn.

I don't. I just don't think Quinn is accurate enough.
We may be stuck with one more year of Quinn because of circumstances, but if so, we'll have a new QB in 2011. Holmgren won't put up with any QB's who aren't playing decently.

IF he doesn't believe Quinn will be the guy going into the future, then maybe he will draft Sam Bradford. I know it's not a popular choice. However the guy has Peyton Manning type accuracy even though he doesn't have a strong arm and he's smart. I believe he would be a stud in the west coast offense.

Take this for what it's worth. On Monday Night Football tonight Jaws said, "Accuracy can be improved."
I don't know if that statement is accurate or not because I've never played QB. But I'm assuming Jaws knows what he's talking about.
If we got the right offensive coaches in place (Jim Zorn as QB coach?) maybe Quinn's accuracy will improve.

Toad, you know I'm no Quinn Pimp.. I'm certainly no QB Guru either..
But if a person with the credentials Holmgren possess says that it's his opinion that you can't tell what you have in a QB until about 3 years (playing time), then really, (don't take this Personally) how can you know he's not the answer?
I was listening to one of the Browns related shows on STO this evening.. Doug Dieken, someone I respect, said something rather interesting that I hadn't heard brought up before..
He was saying that at the beginning of the year, BQ was a mess but that lately, he seems to controlling the flow of the the game better.. that for the last 3 games he's has managed things very well.
Dieken went on to say that he now needs help to get the passing game going.
now, keep in mind, the two guys I've loosely quoted are professionals that should know from what they speak...,
They don't seem to see it your way.
Again, I could care less who our QB is.. I'm not going to allow myself to get invested in anyone until they prove themselves one way or the other.. so for me, this isn't any kind of agenda.
Just more food for thought..... enjoy the brunch

Here are some names to consider that have ties to Holmgren.
John Schneider, 38, Green Bay Co-Director of Football Operations- worked with Holmgren in Green Bay & for one season in Seattle.
John Dorsey, 49, Green Bay Director of College Scouting- worked with Holmgren in Green Bay & for one season in Seattle.
Will Lewis, 51, Seattle Director of Pro Personnel- worked with Holmgren in Green Bay & followd him to Seattle.
Lake Dawson, 37, T ennessee Director of Pro Scouting- worked with Holmgren in Seattle for 6 seasons, before leaving for the Titans in 2007.

Of all the QB's in this draft, Bradford is the one I'd bet would end up having the best career because of that accuracy.
He's a cerebral guy. The difference between he and McCoy is prototypical size, making him the favorite of the two to be drafted high. I have a hard time seeing McCoy going in the 1st round because he's barely 6'2 and 210. I think his combine numbers will show those numbers to be generous.
To be fair to the evaluation process (in which case I mean Holmgren) Mike has a long history of taking QB's with non-1st round grades. That could mean another year of Quinn with a 2nd or 3rd rounder as the developmental guy.
To tie this back to the topic, there probably will be a "GM" but Holmgren will be the REAL GM. It'll be his guys and his systems. That likely means the WCO and the 4-3.
WCO: I've beaten this subject up over the years. We're finally getting it! We're finally gonna be a legitimate offensive team. (This is as Homeristic as I get people. Please don't confuse me with Eo! ).
4-3: I've also stated repeatedly that I favor the 3-4. That won't change now. However, we're closer to a 4-3 defense than a 3-4. Furthermore, I think it's smarter for Holmgren to stick with coaches and players which fit the systems he's most familiar with in order to maximize our chances at success. Therefore, while I'd like to stick with the 3-4, a switch to the 4-3 wouldn't be something I'd complain about.
Make no mistake about it: Holmgren is going to be the GM, even if he has a dummy in the GM's chair with Holmgren's hand up his wooden butt

If that can happen in round 2 and we draft Russell Okung to solve the middle and outside of our offensive line then I think we just fixed out offense with a couple of solid vet free agents in the mix or other draft picks. The possibilities going forward have me excited...

Un-harden my heart. I'm just too cautious to get excited, yet. I guess because I've seen too much of, "Wooo hooo! We got...." and then have been so disappointed.
Bernie? No. He's bringing back his arena football team. Bernie was good on the field but his personal life is a train wreck right now and I have this sneaking suspicion after listening to him as a commentator that there is an underlying problem. I think the organization has kept him hanging around out of respect for his history with the team. He owes the Browns a boat load of money from what the media reports. With all due respect to one of the greatest pro-football players of all time, we keep Jim Brown hanging around out of respect, too. Sorry, Jim, but you're way too far detached from "real" NFL play and strategy now.
Mangini stay? No. The team has been in practically open revolt over him. Jamal Lewis might not be the poster boy for the ideal NFL player but he's a hardened veteran and for him to speak up and say what he said about the regime...it speaks volumes.
I can't figure out why we've never made a play for Ozzie. Maybe he doesn't want to come back to Cleveland. Maybe he has a sweetheart deal in Baltimore. Maybe he's locked into an ironclad contract there.
I think Holmgren knows exactly what he is going to do. I think RL knows, too. He's got a list and has checked it twice. A deal of this magnitude that brought Holmgren to us, with the type of money that has been speculated about in the media (ESPN stated that it was 'thought' to be a 10 yr. $50M dollar deal), is not something that was completed without a definite blue print. They met in Cleveland for two days. Rumors had been flying longer then that. The smoke filled backrooms have been chugging away with all kinds of behind the scenes work and negotiations that have been hidden well enough or gone respectfully unreported.
What personnel does Holmgren plan on bringing in? I'm not smart enough to know or I'd be bringing in the kind of garbonzos every year that I'm sure he has made and will make with the Browns.
I just hope and pray that this is finally the thing we need to get a Lombardi Trophy and restore this mighty franchise to glory!
I'm a Brown's fan for life; win, lose or draw!
Never have hope. You won’t be disappointed.
