Cleveland Browns' Brady Quinn on IR for season By Mary Kay Cabot December 22, 2009, 10:38AM Quinn is on IR for the season. BEREA, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Brady Quinn has been placed on injured reserve with a right foot injury sustained on his 24 yard run at the end of Sunday's 41-34 victory over Kansas City and will be lost for the season. "It's going to take a little while (to heal),'' said coach Eric Mangini. He said he's not yet certain if he'll undergo surgery. Derek Anderson will start Sunday against the Raiders. Brett Ratliff will be the No. 2 and Josh Cribbs will be the No. 3. Quinn went 2-7 as a starter this season, and is the NFL's 26th ranked quarterback with a 67.2 rating. Anderson went 1-4 this season with a dismal 36.2 rating. It's the second straight season Quinn will finish the season in IR. "He's done a lot of good things,'' said Mangini. "I think the no-huddle helped him and helped us.'' Link

Yeah, saw him hobbling on that one... didn't look good.
Now we might have to draft a QB. Thought we could give quinn a couple more games and see what he could turn up, but now it looks like we might be taking bradford or clausen. Of course, holmgren did say quinn hasn't played enough, so maybe not.

He hasn't played enough but he's finishing his second year on IR. Can he hold up enough is the real question?

I guess this means its time to show Holmgren what he has in Ratcliff. I dont think it helps DA in any way to watch him throw missles behind a route or at the targets feet. Especially in this cold weather.
This all but guarentees that Quinn wont hit his contracts escalators. It was a dumb contract anywyas and a stupid reason to hold out. Not sure who is more at fault, him or his agent. They held out for nothing.
Now that the money is available, Cribbs agent has to know this money is there for the taking. Not to bash Quinn, but Cribbs deserves it more anyways.

Stunned is all I can say. I saw him get his ankle twisted on that one run, but I thought he shook it off. Sucks for Quinn.

According to my Brown's QB cycle field book, DA will now throw 10 TDs over the last games, just enough for Holmgren to fall for him.
Tragic, but somehow seems inevitable.

Good luck to DA, I hope he shows 2007 form and we blow away opponents the next 2 weeks. And he can do so without having to look over his shoulder as he and Quinn both did all year (actually more like the last 2 years).
Feel bad for Quinn, as he finally had his chance, but it ends abruptly again, but this is a league of opportunities. Whether that opportunity belongs to you or the guy that replaces you does not matter. What matters is what you do when you have that opportunity.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Oh c'mon, it's Oakland.
DA will drive us to goal line on our last series and Dabol will call "Red Right 88".

Unfortunate for Quinn but it does give Holmgren a chance to get a fresh look at Anderson as we head into the offseason.

I'm really concerned now about drafting a QB,...I mean,...does Holmgren now start thinking that way,... This just screws up my Master Plan,....(the one I never had anyway,....) Not to make light of his injury,...I really wanted Quinn to succeed, in order to save that pick,.... Is it noon yet ? Time for a Stroh's,....

Holmgren already has formed an opinion about Quinn, that much is obvious. However, he can't have studied film of him as that wouldn't be made available until he's signed the papers and taken the Czar's position. So it's unlikely he's formed his final opinion of Quinn.
Regarding his comments about that "three years worth of starts" BS, Holmgren wasn't about to say anything bad about any player or coach on this team. He couldn't. That would have been the most idiotic thing in the world for him to do, and he's no idiot. So there are no built-in excuses for Quinn. It's going to come down to what Holmgren see's on the tapes.
It's my belief that the very best Quinn can hope for going into next year is an open competition, where he's either competing against a vet or against a 1st day draft pick. The worst case scenario is that he becomes the backup. I say that's the worst case because it'd be better for him to be released, so that he could get a fresh start and a chance at a starters gig somewhere else.
There are some excuses for Quinn, but not even remotely enough to wash away the guilt from his lack of NFL prowess. The knocks on Quinn coming out of college still exist 3 years into his pro career. The two biggest were that he folds up like a tent when pressured, and his accuracy is poor. Against a pathetic team with time to throw, he showed both against the Chiefs, clearly indicating that he hasn't gotten it. I could have accepted a bad game here or there as long as the trend was moving upwards, but the last two weeks he flatlined. Now in his 3rd year, he's just a bad quarterback.
Let the speculation begin..........

Crap.
I wanted to see more of him to finish the season. I don't think this affects MH's decision on drafting a QB. I'd be willing to bet he already knows what he wants to do (though I have no idea what that is).
Well, let's hope Harrison and Jennings go crazy so we can keep the ball out of DA's hands. Ugh.

Yea I saw Quinn flinching when he came up after the run. Seemed to damage it on the cut near sideline and just had to go out of bounds. I don't think this will affect the draft much. He'll be back 100%. If they (whoever) were/will thinking, about getting a newbie they will anyway and if not, this won't matter.

Well I've read that MH had been reviewing the QB's in next year's draft..and what he determines about Quinn remains to be seen.. What we do know is that he's a student of the greatest QB coach and evaluator of all-time, Bill Walsh. And we know what Bill Walsh preached were the two most important things he looked for when evaluating a QB. Quick feet and accuracy. Not height nor arm strength. So just by going on that guess QB that rules out? ..
We also know that Holmgren has coached the three greatest WCO QB's of all-time. Montana, Young, and Favre.
He cut his teeth on Montana and Young, but he was solely responsible for evaluating, trading for, and then developing Brett Favre.
He also evaluated, drafted, then traded for, and developed a very non-descript 6th rounder, Matt Hasselback, who guided the Seahawks to 5 playoff berths, one Super Bowl, and he's also been to 3 Pro Bowls.
His options are then three, after his evaluation process. He may conclude that:
- No QB in this draft is worthy of a high selection, and he's sure he's the guy who can develop Quinn into a fine WCO QB by refining his technique because he has quick feet, thus improving his accuracy. Just in case he may draft a guy in a later round as he did Hasselback.
-Quinn is not WCO worthy, and he needs to draft a QB early in the draft.
- He needs to trade for a WCO QB, most likely Hasselback again, and develop a draft pick like Lefevour..or fill in a name ..a guy who can learn the WCO.. Now that could also include a Sam Bradford..who is accurate but hasn't operated under center..and has the questions about his shoulder now.

I guess J. Campbell is done too since he got hurt and has proved all his team does is lose.. There is plenty of bad QB play to go around and we might see the worst of it this week.

Derek Anderson will start Sunday against the Raiders. Brett Ratliff will be the No. 2 and Josh Cribbs will be the No. 3.Am I the only one that wouldn't mind somehow seeing Cribbs at QB for every snap?

WOW, didn't expect to see this at all when coming to the board. Can we take DA out of the game and not throw a single pass? Please????

Please noooooo!!!!
BQ...yeah it was that long run thought it was a cheap shot too as he was going out of bounds??? defender fell on the back of his foot...bent his toes to touch his shin...or upper ankle in the front. He was hurting but we had a just a couple more plays and we were done on O - Cold and adrenaline had him in...but right from that moment I'm thinking...OH NO he broke something...he'll be on IR wish it weren't so.
I wanted us to win out. Well with DA in unless he pulls his magic show of illusion...we should lock up a #5 or # 4 pick in the draft nothing later. Losing out also might just be the kicker for seeing the Mangini era end. Winning out might have put some pressure on Holmgren to keep him here in 2010.
All I know is I do not want to waste another year with DA as our Starter. I'd rather have David Carr or Campbell here than see DA at the helm and wast another year of my life But BQ is smart and a hard worker - he will have time to win Holmgren over and learn his Offense a lot quicker than DA.

In my not so humble opinion...
It doesn't matter who starts at QB as far as Holmgren is concerned. Like I said in another thread, Mike already knows what he's going to do. The deal bringing him to Cleveland was probably in the works long before it was rumored in the media. The negotiations began a long time ago. RL might not know NFL football but he's a businessman and he wouldn't turn all the power over this huge of an asset to a man without a definite blue print for success. I believe that RL truly is sick of losing and truly wants to win.
The world has seen enough of DA and BQ to know what to think of them. Holmgren doesn't live in an igloo on Greenland. ESPN, FOXSPORTS, CNN, The NYT, Washington Post, and the BFE News from Podunk, Ohio all know that both DA and BQ are not our QB's of the future.
I believe that the only question that remains about who are QB next year will be is, what the draft pick order will be. Let's face it, neither of our current QB's have any trade value unless Al Davis' hallucinates on Ensure and has an epiphany of Biblical proportions that envision BQ or DA as the second coming of Kenny Stabler.
Mike knows football. Mike knows what will work. Un-harden my heart and allow me to get very excited about this "Wooo hooo we got...!" moment but I'm keeping my feet on the ground, this time, and trying to be sensible.
It's time for a true champion of NFL football like Mike Holmgren to bring us a Lombardi Trophy and restore our mighty franchise to the glory it deserves! Mike has a plan. RL has approved it.
I'm a Browns fan for life; win, lose or draw and it's time. We will start winning again!
Never have hope. You won’t be disappointed.

I would want "some" leeway on Young, as he stepped into a pretty good situation. But you're spot on with Joe and the follow-on with Favre. I hope he takes a nice shot with Quinn, but now it will be up to how well/how rehab goes,....I do not want to have to draft Sam or Jimmy.

Awesome...just awesome.... Who's willing to bet that Anderson plays well for the rest of the season, hence reigniting the QB debate? It's almost comical...in a deeply tragic sense. Hell, I say enough. The QB trauma (I meant to write drama here, but trauma is actually more apt) just takes up too much of this team's energy. Toss Anderson. Toss Quinn. Let's start anew. I was previously hoping that we could give Quinn another year but he did NOTHING against the Chiefs. Plus he injures himself. ENOUGH..... Give me the best QB on the board in the second round, get whatever you can for Quinn and Anderson and lets move on. I'm so sick of the constant change at QB. Its not good for the team and its damn frustrating for the fans.

I know this is totally irrelevant, but I couldn't help but think on Quinn's last run that he should have just gone out of bounds after getting the first down. 1., he risked injury, and 2. if he hadn't of kept going, Harrison could have run for over 300 and the single game record. Actually, the only thing I thought was number 2.

As I mentioned before, I was really hoping for something to click in Quinn's head over the last part of this season. People are going to say that you won't be able to judge due to the injury, but I stand by what I said when he took over the starting job again. You evaluate him for the rest of the season to see where he is. His season is over, and he really didn't wow anyone. I give him props for finishing the game on what turned out to be a pretty nasty injury, but his throws were generally poor all game (before the injury). I'm bummed, I was really hoping he would show something. I'm bummed because, once again, we drafted nothing more than a superb backup QB. I'm bummed that another of our high picks doesn't seem to be panning out. More than anything, I'm bummed to see Anderson under center again, but that's a whole 'nother debate.
Looking forward to next season, I'm really hoping we don't draft another quarterback. Maybe bring in a free agent and have a QB shootout with Quinn (I don't want it to even sound like the "competition" disaster from this year). We have too many other needs to ruin another drafted QB.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
