PITTSBURGH (AP) Linebacker LaMarr Woodley predicts the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals will "lay down'' for their virtually meaningless games Sunday because they don't want the Super Bowl champion Steelers to make the playoffs.
The Steelers (8-7) would reach the postseason for the fifth time in six seasons if they beat Miami, the Patriots defeat Houston, and the Bengals beat the New York Jets. There are other combinations that would get them in, but all include either a New England or Cincinnati victory.
Pittsburgh's problem: The Patriots (10-5) and Bengals (10-5) have little at stake other than which team will be seeded No. 3 in the AFC. With a wild-card playoff game awaiting both teams next week, New England and Cincinnati are expected to rest some starters to avoid possible injuries.
New England coach Bill Belichick hasn't revealed who will play. Woodley, last week's AFC defensive player of the week and a Pro Bowl alternate, thinks he knows already.
"All of them lay down,'' Woodley said Wednesday. "No one wants to see Pittsburgh in it. That's just how it is. Everybody knows we're a dangerous team once we get into the playoffs, no matter how we played the whole year. Once we get into the playoffs, the Pittsburgh Steelers is a playoff team.''
The Steelers were No. 6-seeded in 2005, only to win three consecutive road playoff games and the Super Bowl. One of those road victories was in Cincinnati; now a Bengals loss to the Jets (8-7) could help keep Pittsburgh out.
"Cincinnati is probably going to go into New York and lay down for the Jets and not play them hard just because they're not going to want to see Pittsburgh in it,'' Woodley said.
Woodley emphasized the Steelers played their regulars during a season-ending 31-0 win over Cleveland last year, despite having nothing to gain other than staying sharp. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sustained a concussion but, after a bye week, returned for the playoffs.
"We definitely wouldn't lay down because it's a pride thing with us, going out there winning ballgames and shutting teams down,'' Woodley said.
Woodley was a lone voice among the Steelers' players, none of whom said they agreed with him. Safety Ryan Clark laughed off the notion Cincinnati doesn't want to play Pittsburgh again. The Steelers have lost five of their last seven.
"To say Cincinnati doesn't want to face us, that would kind of be a little dumb, being that they beat us twice this season,'' Clark said. "So I'm sure they have a lot of confidence if they do have to play us.''
The Steelers beat the Ravens twice in 2008, Clark pointed out, then won again a third time in the AFC championship game.
"I think when you say that (teams will lay down), it calls into question the character of the players on their team. And I think all those guys are character football players and competitors,'' Clark said. "Now if it were last year's (Steelers team), yeah, they probably wouldn't want to play us. But this year's team, I don't think strikes fear in anyone.''
Several players said the Steelers need to focus on beating the Dolphins (7-8) rather than worrying what the Patriots and Bengals do.
"They're a team you can't look past at all,'' right tackle Willie Colon said. ``They're going to have pride and they're going to be ready for us to get after them.''
Nose tackle Casey Hampton and running back Willie Parker will understand it if New England and Cincinnati rest their starters in what Parker called ``a game you don't need.''
"Coaches have to do what's best for their team,'' said Hampton, who laughed when told of Woodley's remarks. "Being healthy going into the playoffs, I think, is their main focus. If the game doesn't mean anything, why risk getting hurt?''

Frankly, I think Miami will whoop the Stoolers behinds and they won't need to worry about what the other teams will be doing.
Woodhead forgets that Miami is still in the hunt for a playoff spot. Every coach I ever had taught me to worry about the game in front of me.
The way the Piggsburgh Stoolers played this season the Cheatriots and the Bungholes would probably rather SEE them in the playoffs. "We are slouches during the season because we know we will win in the playoffs." Now, that's flat out brilliant Piggsburgh logic for you.
Unless Piggsburgh has the entire officiating squad in the NFL on their payroll now, it's hard to see how they will be able to affect the outcome of so many games.
Enjoy the playoffs from the comfort of your living room, Stoolers.
Never have hope. You won’t be disappointed.

I think it's funny it sounds like his own teammates don't even take his comments seriously. I truly hope he was joking. The Bengal's swept them this year.

Actually, the thought crossed my mind that the Colts were planning ahead a bit as well. A jets win vs the colts really hurt the steelers chances. Now the jets can take care of things themselves and keep the steelers out of the playoffs.

If they had beaten us, the Chiefs or the Raiders, he wouldn't have anything to be whining about right now. Take care of your own business and you don't have to worry what other squads do.

The Steelers are so good at reinforcing and justifying my pure hatred for them,...I remember when the Steelers began there 4 game losing streak in KC, I listened to Ryan Clark give about a 5 minute interview on sirius NFL radio after the loss and did nothing but make a mockery of that game,...the dufus has since shut his pie hole.
There will be nothin sweeter than Miami kicking that stooler butt right out of contention.

What's the status on Polamalu? Heard he could be ready this week or the playoffs if they make it.
My worst fear is they get in and Polamalu returns. I have a much better appreciation for that guy after this year. Always thought he was overrated but I think that was my hatred clouding my view of the obvious.
Woodley is an idiot. Hasn't he opened his big mouth in the past about other things as well?
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Well maybe you should have beaten the Raiders, Chiefs and US and it would not be up to what others do.
And yeah - in lieu of the power the Steelers have presented puts fear in those people...btw how many times did the Steelers beat the Bengals this year that makes them soooooo afraid of them.
You're DONE! Another reason I hope Mangini stays...I think he has their number Got a feeling the Steelers are on their way DOWN. And the crying is bad...like we got a shoulder for ya...when we had the Titans walk in over us on an end of season game against the Colts!!
Suck it up!

Woodley is a egotistical arse.. if the Pats and Bengals lay down, it won't be to block the Steelers, it will be to save thier starters for the Playoffs.
Me thinks he thinks to much of himself...

What really stunk was we didn't even have to win in the final week. Nobody but Anderson (and the team) to blame for that one.

Yes Anderson is to blame especially since he cost us the tie breaker with divisional record http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/standings?year=season_2007 but the Browns did need to win that game to have a chance.

If I remember correctly if we were to win the Bengals game in Week 16 we would have clinched a playoff spot, however I could be quite incorrect...
In the end what it comes down to is we didn't seal the deal when we had the chance, and we therefore couldn't control our own destiny. No excuses. The teams that play winning football throughout the course of the season have every right to do as they wish going forward. That is their strategic reward for handling business in the regular season and locking up an appearance in the post season.

Apparenly he just loves to see his name in lights. And to over use smack names in the Pure Football Forum which could get a warning from the Refs.
But hey, to each his own.
It is funny that Woodly is talking this kind of crap while none of his teammates back him up. It's also odd that Clark says this Steelers team doesn't scare anybody. That's kind of a defeatist attitude. I wonder how many other Steelers feel this way?
The Steelers seem prone to giving up a lot to the wildcat and nobody does it better than Miami. Should be a good game. Go Fins!

The reason the Colts played Sorgie was because they didn't want to see the oh so dangerous Browns in the playoffs.

If you had Norton 360 Version 3.0 and had their Identity Safe feature activated, you'd understand why.
As I have explained before, time and time again, for some stupid reason, Norton thinks that the Subject bar is asking for my username as though I'm trying to log into this message board and Norton automatically fills it in with my username.
I could A.) Turn off Norton when I come here and pull up my password off of my thumb drive and log back on when I leave (that won't happen) B.) Put up with the incovenience of having to copy and paste the thread title into the Subject bar every time I post C.) ignore it and just have fun D.) Continue to explain to folks with issues why it happens.
C.) is the correct answer for me.
Sorry it bothers you so much. Just skip my posts or calm down. It's no big deal.

That is incorrect,...they didn't. If the Titans and Browns had both lost, Cleveland would have won the tiebreaker with a better conference record, 7-5 vs. Titans 6-6.

I remember how angry I was when the Colts rolled over and gave the Titans a walk into the playoffs over the Browns. Took me awhile to realize that it was our own fault due to the loss to the Bengals, which should have never happened.
My entire point in even posting this thread was to point out the arrogance of Woodley. But, as some people who have replied stated, it could be reverse psychology.
Unfortunately, I do agree with Woodley's indignation only in so far as, I was taught by many good coaches that winning is every thing. Rolling over, to me, is tantamount to putting "the fix in".
The questions remain: are the teams who pull their starters doing so to rest key players and avoid injuries, or are they truly trying to determine their own destiny? Or both? Is it cheating or is it legitmate? Who is to judge?
It wasn't funny when it happened to us but considering it's now happening (or could be happening) to the Steelers...well...now that's funny.
Never have hope. You won’t be disappointed.

I agree that the Steelers could have taken care of their own business and this would not even be an issue. On the other hand, however, I for one am dissappointed that by laying down and throwing away a perfect season, the Colts have put an inferior Jets team into the playoff picture, thereby reducing the quality of the playoffs themselves. Now the Bungholes are going to lay down for them almost ensuring their post season appearance. Does anyone on this board really expect the Jets to get past Wildcard weekend if they make it in? I don't! I would much rather see the best teams in the mix, not those who had two late season games handed to them because two playoff teams rested their players! This just sucks IMHO. I know, I know, they earned the right to rest their players.... I would really love, I mean really, really love it if the Jets met and defeated the Colts, the team that opened the door and let them in the playoffs by throwing away a perfect season instead of eliminating the bums in the first place! Sorry for the rant, but it just ticks me off!

It's an understanable rant. On the other hand, how can this be controlled ?
I, for one, would put a "salary premium" on wins.
In deference to questioning that we indeed have the best teams going into the playoffs, I'm not so sure the Steelers have been playing well enough late to accord them that status, but in the meantime if the math says they're in, then so be it.
Believe me, I wish the Colts had won too, but that's not because of the Steelers or the Jets, but rather the historical implications of having another 16-0 team. Also in that vein, I think it's a different accomplishment than the Dolphins', who only had to play 14 reg season games.
I'm actually hoping more that the Pats lay down for Houston

j/c Related article: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4788472The NFL will ask the competition committee to review integrity-of-game and competitive-balance concerns with clinching playoff teams that choose to rest starters at the end of the season. "This is an issue that we have reviewed in the past. The position of the competition committee, and affirmed by the clubs, when it was reviewed in 2005 was that 'a team that has clinched its division title has earned the right to rest its starters for the postseason, and that preparing for the postseason is just as important as protecting some other team's playoff opportunity.' That is the current policy," league spokesman Greg Aiello said. "We are aware of the fan reaction and that is a factor to be considered," he continued. "Some teams that have everything clinched, like the Giants and Patriots two years ago, choose to play all out to continue or gain momentum for the playoffs. We expect to continue to review this issue." The Colts' recent 29-15 loss to the New York Jets, which ended their shot at an undefeated season, didn't sit well with Colts fans and NFL purists. The Colts (14-1) had nothing significant to play for, having clinched their eighth straight playoff berth in late November. In a controversial decision, coach Jim Caldwell chose to sit quarterback Peyton Manning and numerous starters for most of the second half. The Jets' win boosted the playoff chances for New York, which can clinch a postseason spot with a victory Sunday against the Bengals. Cincinnati, which has clinched the AFC North, also might sit some of its key players in the game. Information from ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Thanks for posting, but other than the NFL recognizing that "it's an issue," it doesn't provide any answers or suggestions. At least they're looking at it.
