Romeo Crennel is expected to return to coaching in the NFL by joining the staff of the Kansas City Chiefs next season, according to to multiple league sources.

Kansas City wanted to hire the former Cleveland Browns head coach as its defensive coordinator last offseason, but his hip surgery made it too challenging a prospect.

Hiring Crennel would be one of the first steps it would take in its defensive makeover. Clancy Pendergast is the current defensive coordinator for the Chiefs.

Kansas City waited throughout last offseason to hire Crennel and now is expected to be waiting for him once again.

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli worked with Crennel in New England.

Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider.

I'm glad he came through the hip surgury/rehab well.

I'm also glad he got the gig in KC. It will be interesting to watch to say the least.

I wonder...does that get Crennel off Lerner's payroll?

Glad to Romeo getting back to a position he is qualified for. He will probably be more successful as a DC than he was as a HC.

Good luck RAC, except when playing the Browns...mac

Yes. No double dipping, even for coaches. That's why people think Gruden will sit out another year. So he could collect off Malcom Glazer, whom he thinks gave him a raw deal.

Not sure if it's 100% or they just deduct the diff in what he makes from KC as DC. It's gotta be a lot less than Lerner pays him.

Good luck, RAC. You are a class act who was just in over his head as a head coach. Hope you do well in KC unless you are playing the Browns.

Good guy, Crennel. He's on the long-list of good coordinators who didn't have the game to be a HC. There's no shame in that. He'll be good for a struggling KC franchise.............

Tell you what...............If we switch to the 4-3 (it's not a lock like the WCO but it's probably likely) then here's something we should think about:

Because of the lack of a CBA, there are a TON of restricted players. Because there are less true free agents, there are going to be some trades. Since they are going to the 3-4 while we may go to the 4-3, I think two guys that aren't good fits for new defenses should be traded.........

We send them Wimbley (whose contract goes through 2010) and we get Derrick Johnson, who is a Restricted free agent.

I've always really liked Johnson. I thought he'd be great in the 4-3, but we were running the 3-4 and he isn't a pass-rusher.

Such a trade would make just too much sense for both teams. I wonder how long it'd take the media to pick up on this one....................

Trella...found an article this morning that answers the question about Lerner's financial responsibility to Crennel, if and when he's named DC of the Chiefs...

"The move would save the Browns money, as they would only have to pay the difference between his new salary and the $4 million owed per season through 2011."

I doubt it...the payroll part.

Romeo is a good coordinator and will do well.

I like Romeo as a DC. I think he does very well there. Hope he can make KC into a decent defense.

So was hiring Mike Holmgren.

The rules that exist because of the CBA situation make many things possible that weren't last year. Each team is going to have a far greater percentage of restricted free agents, and as such, may be interested in trading them.

I think you'll see some trades this year, unlike in years past. It isn't that great a stretch to think that Crennel is familiar with Wimbley, and would think he could help them in the 34 while Johnson, who doesn't fit that defense, would do well if we switch to the 43, which is possible.

Congrats to Romeo.... was always a fan of his and didn't think that he needed to go. I'm glad that he's caught on elsewhere.

When you realize just how different the mentality of this team is now, it makes you think.

Mangini, for whatever faults he has, instilled a toughness in this team that Romeo never, ever, ever could.
