Monday, January 4, 2010 Zorn fired after 12-20 stint
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services
Jim Zorn has been fired as the head coach of the Washington Redskins, according to multiple reports Monday morning.
The Redskins were 4-12 this season, capped off by a 23-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. It was the team's worst record in 15 years. Zorn as 12-20 in two seasons as the Redskins head coach.
The Washington Post reported Monday that Zorn and the Redskins returned to their headquarters arond 2:15 a.m. Zorn left with a security escort around 4:45 a.m. ET without commenting.
The Redskins are expected to hold a press conference around noon ET to announce what had been speculated about and rumored on for weeks, ever since Washington lost to Detroit in Week 3. Zorn later was stripped of his play-calling responsibilities prior to the Oct. 26 game against Philadelphia.
One Redskins player said the team already has called a team meeting for 11:30 a.m. Monday, at which time the players are expected to be debriefed about what happened with Zorn and what direction this team will go. With Zorn out of the picture, the focus now will shift to whether Redskins owner Daniel Snyder can do enough to lure former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan to Washington.
Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter is included in this report

Zorn is a good man,, not sure he's HC material, doesn't appear so, but he was, from what I recall, a solid QB coach.. Maybe he'll end up here. We could do worse..

Don't how accurate this is, but Mike and Mike just said that Snyder interviewed one of Zorn's own coordinators for HC a few weeks ago to meet the Rooney Rule. Kind of a scummy move. I'm glad that guy is not our owner.

I don't know if that matters.. according to a blurb that Mac found (and posted on the RAC got a job thread), Snyder would be responsible for the difference between what we could pay him and what his last contract was..
That's if I understand it correctly.

He was in WAY over his head. WAY WAY over his head.
He is a great QB's coach. He didn't appear to be a very good OC. Hard to believe, but the offense got better when he had those duties stripped from him, despite the continued deterioration of his offensive line and positions due to injuries.
Zorn is a great guy, and very well respected throughout the league for his work as a QB's coach and a human being. But he never stood a shot as the HC.
The odds are great that he'll land here.................

Please God, please do not let Jim Zorn end up here. The last thing the Browns need now is a mealy-mouthed, ineffective, wuss of a coach at *any* level in this organization.

As a QB coach, he will fit in nicely, either revamping what's left over of the Quinn-Anderson fiasco, or tutoring the new boy Holmgren picks,....

LOL ... and who in their right mind would fill that vacancy?
I laughed so hard when they hired CABLE. He was an offensive coordinator for a COLLEGE program when he got the Raiders job. His only HC'ing experience was when he ran the Idaho Vandals program into the ground in the first part of the decade. Only took Idaho 6 years to recover from that!

Oh, Davis will get somebody to take the job... there will always be somebody willing to take that much money. The comedy is in watching how much farther Davis will have to dig each time to find that person.

I'm not saying Zorn will be our head coach.
He was an excellent QB coach before the Redskins made the mistake of hiring him as head coach.

Actually, I was thinking "young" ,,,,,....as in a draft pick. (Not that I want to do that.) But I think Zorn would be good in either case.

If you think about it, the Raiders job is almost a no loss situation for an up and coming coach.
If you fail, it's almost expected since Al Davis is such a goof. If you succeed, people will think you succeeded in spite of Davis and more opportunities open up for you.

Even worse is the coordinator accepting the invitation to interview. I would have told Mr. Snyder I don't interview for positions before they are open.

If teams are going to continue to skirt the Rooney Rule, then either drop it or find a better way to enforce it..

Sorry but I have to call BS on the bolded part. The Rooney Rule has turned into a farce. Opinions of Dan Snyder aside, why should the 'Skins be forced to interview a minority candidate when they have already locked onto their guy? There simply isn't a black coach on the market with near the credentials of a guy like Shanahan or Holmgren. There just isn't.
Instead of arguing my point even more, I'll just provide one example. Tony Dungy. It appears that he's done coaching and content with working for NBC. Good for him. He built Tampa into a Super Bowl contender (Gruden won it the next year) and did win a Super Bowl with the Colts. If he wanted to get back into coaching, do you think any owner would turn him down on the basis that he is a minority?
Give me a break. Society has changed over the decades and so has the need for the Looney rule.
I agree with whoever said that the coach shouldn't have interviewed for the job while Zorn was still there, but that is a different issue. I also disagree with how Snyder belittled Zorn in different ways (again, different issue).

Agreed Has....
Untill we drop this Rediculous rule we will never get past the very principle it represents. We are at a time now to where a minority should and will get the chance they deserve.
As a owner i should be able to hire and fire who i wish to. If people or players or even fans feel like the owner or organization is being bias......then the potential FA or draft picks or even fans can show there dissaproval by not supporting or playing for the team and reasons why. The organization would purge itself from such things in order to compete and be successful.
We can only move forward when one stops forcing color and starts looking at a talented player/coach and not a talented black or white player/coach.
JMO....

First of all, Mr.Snyder interviewed his minority candidate when the old team President( Vinny aka.. Dan's lapdog Cerato) was still around. Danny set that up and it was Danny and Vinny who interviewed the guy. Danny KNEW he was not hiring the minority candidate, just interviewed him to say he complied with the rule. So how is that Rooney Rule keeping Danny from hiring who he wants??? How does it stop any owner from hiring who he wants??? Also, The Rooney rule does not give ANY COACH a job. It just says you have to INTERVIEW 1 minority candidate. BTW, that can mean hispanic also! I want someone here to tell me how can you get a job if you cannot get an interview??

I do too but this is big business anymore. I'm afraid had you done that your next stop would have been the door with Zorn.
