The Big Show airs at 4
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 5, 2010 10:51 AM ET
While the Mastermind has landed in Washington, let's not forget about this is Mike Holmgren's first day of work in Cleveland.

"The Big Show" arrived at the Browns facility Tuesday and will meet with the media at 4 ET. Holmgren is meeting with Eric Mangini according to Adam Schefter, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that "no major announcements" are planned Tuesday.

Making Holmgren's decision about Mangini tougher is the sudden show of support by the Browns players. Josh Cribbs was hardly the only one.

Who would have guessed Mangini's season would end in a gatorade bath? Quarterbacks coach Carl Smith had a long, impassioned defense of Mangini, comparing him to Bill Belichick.

''They missed it on Eric,'' Smith said. ''They missed it . . . I don't blame anybody,'' Smith said. ''Because it's hard to know. It's not Entertainment Tonight. They missed it on [Bill] Belichick [in Cleveland]. They missed it."

"They" in this case is the media or the owner or the football populace. But even the Cleveland media seems swayed by the four-game winning streak, saying the Browns always played hard, earned respect, and forced Holmgren into a tough decision.

What a difference a month can make.

I'm not really surprised that there won't be any "big announcement." The only way I figured there would be was if Holmgren had already made up his mind or if the meeting with Mangini went really badly.

I have a feeling Holmgren is a little more deliberate and wants to make sure he feels comfortable with his decision.

Holmgren doesn't need to make the quick decision...he needs to make the right decision. Take your time, Mike, and get it right.

I'll definitely be very interested in this one.

I don't know, as someone said, the meeting with Mangini might be quick and we could find out that EM is gone.

I have this feeling that Holmgren already has called potential candidates and had some ideas in mind. I just don't see Mangini staying here next year seeing as Holmgren comes from a totally diff coaching tree, wants to give some of his guys a chance. Why draw it out?

I think this guy Marty Morhinwig or whatever is coming in to replace Mangenius

As i've also said, i think that we can expect a GM any day now. May be we find out today

IIRC, as a former Marine, Marty is no more than a likeable guy. He did a terrible job in Detroit, no ?

The big issue, though, with a GM is that some of the teams with pretty good candidates are still playing (Green Bay, Philly, etc.) So, that might slow things down.

Nobody's done a good job in Detroit.

He's done great as the OC in Philly. He's 48. Has prior head coaching experience. He's their Assistant Head Coach so that he can't be moved laterally which shows that the Eagles definitely covet him.

Many reports link him as the guy that Holmgren will want to go to us. I just feel like he might be the guy who comes along. Remember he coached the lions like 2001 and 2002. It's 2010 now so he has probably grown as a coach

At this point I am so sick of the debate, I just want it to be resolved, Having to talk about mangini's future since week 4 has grown stale.

They may have it live on Bruce Drennan's All bets are off on sportstime ohio. For time warner package it is usually channel 34.

I would hope that MH was brought in for his knowledge of what it takes to win and not to commit to or pick from some tree.

Here's a novel idea,....why don't we get all the ingredients neccessary along with some really good fertalizer and grow our OWN tree!!

Yesterday on All Bets are Off on STO, Drennan said that they would carry any Holmgren conference live on STO... It just so happens that Drennans show airs live today starting a 3pm and running till 6pm so it will most likely be on then. Not sure if ESPN or any other national network will pick it up,.,

I would think that for sure the entire thing would be available on the Browns main site after it's over...

If MH is going to clean house he MUST do it quickly. Lots of teams are already interviewing coaches - and those coaches are signing up asst coaches. Word is that the Redskins may announce Shannahan as HC today.

I personally hope we keep EM as I think he's the best man for the job, but if MH is going to shake things up he needs to move swiftly.

You gotta be careful with the main site though. I have noticed them changing around the press conference transcripts to better reflect the organization and not necessarily what was actually said/asked. Could very well edit the video as well.

He's going to pick somebody he's comfortable with, probably somebody he's worked with before.. It's not like he's going to run an ad on Monster.

Novel, true. Saplings have a much better success rate than seeds... so you don't plant a seed, you plant a sapling that has already been groomed and nurtured by somebody.. and by the time a coach gets to be a successful OC or a DC... they've all coached for somebody like Holmgren, Parcells, etc so they will all be said to have come from some "tree"...

Your orange trees came from somewhere originally. We aren't talking about picking fruit yet, we are still talking about planting the tree.

It'll probably be on Cleveland Browns.com a little bit after it's over. That's where I'll listen. Unless someone else provides a link of live audio.

My prediction for what Holmgren says at 4:00:

"Eric and I had a very productive, very good talk. I haven't made any decisions yet. I want to make sure I'm looking at the big picture and I make the proper decision to help this organization move forward."

That's definitely what Eric Mangini would say about meeting with Eric Mangini.

I can't imagine him not feeling comfortable with what Mangini has accomplished so far,in fact, I would imagine he's very impressed,...they share the same goals. When actual "true" accounts are reported of Mangini,he comes across as a very personable guy with a very distinct vision, which btw,is being established as very respectable.
If MH runs an ad on Monster he's probably going to come up with someone like you or me,..not Mangini,....hmmm,..on second thought.

I think we all need to remember the role that MH is to fill within this org. He's NOT the coach,OR the GM. His job was to establish credibility and "right the ship" here. Why would he tear down a positive that has already taken 1 year to obtain, just to hope for the same results with different personel, while taking yet another year just to get there? I don't know about you but I'm sick of waiting.

OK,..I'm guessing you agree with me on this. Mangini is not a seed, he's actually more than a sapling. He may be a tree of a different variety, but it's still from the same family. That in itself should not interfere with a football czars ability to run a successful franchise.

I still think we know EM fate by the end of the day, though.

Hey for all we know he could have guys tripping over themselves to get here and be a part of the turn around of one of the NFL's storied franchises!

We could have a serious all star cast and I don't even think I'm going out on a limb with this.

If he decides to dump Mangini...I just don't know who else is out there that would be better.

With everything that has happened this year...I think Holmgren has to be impressed with how Mangini was able to finish off the season.

We could have had 7 wins...the OT Cinci game and Detroit game came down to the end. We win those and we're 7-9...and I think it would be automatic that Mangini stays.

That being said...who knows what's gonna happen...how hard can it really be for these two to work together.

We also could very well have lost that buffalo "game" and if the last pass in the KC game was complete...

Not arguing with you on whether or not he should stay, but every year every team can point to a number of games in their schedule that could have gone either way.
