Like it or not, talk about a QB in this draft for the Browns is legitimate. It'll come from the fans and the media alike. Some of you don't want any part of a 1st round QB. Some don't want a QB at all. Some think a guy not from the 1st round is the way to go.
Well, if you're one of the latter, then McCoy is the guy in this draft, just like that wasted-time Charlie Frye was back in '05.
I've stated my opinion of McCoy numerous times. I think he's a guy who looks better because he's been in a great system that inflates numbers. I've said that once the combine gets here, his lack of arm-strength and size are going to be exposed, and because of that, he isn't a 1st rounder.
Well, while I'm not sure if it's a positive affirmation of my evaluations (remember, I've watched McCoy for several years here in Austin) or the kiss of death because it's Mel Kiper but for good or ill, here's his updated take on the guy:
Quote:
It says a lot about Colt McCoy that in a year in which he's thrown for 27 touchdowns -- against just 12 INTs -- and maintained a completion percentage of (once again) over 70 percent, his stock has actually gone down.
College will, of course, soon be over; in many ways, McCoy may wish it was finished months ago, at least in the eyes of NFL scouts. McCoy has one crucial test left in Pasadena, and I truly believe that based on his performance against the Alabama Crimson Tide, McCoy could shift his stock anywhere from the late first round to well into the third. Really.
It's not all about McCoy -- it has a lot to do with who he's playing. And if you don't think the bowls have anything to say about stock, you're not remembering the last Texas QB who was an underdog in the BCS title game and catapulted himself through his performance. (Here was my call on that guy.)
I was as high as anybody on McCoy to start the season. Just look where I had him when we got this season started. So how is it that a quarterback could be punished for winning game after game? How is that McCoy may have dipped as we assess his NFL prospects even while he has cemented an almost absurd level of college legend?
As the season progressed, I started to sour on McCoy's NFL stock -- at least a little. I wrote this in November:
"In terms of his pro potential -- which is still significant -- I think the bigger issue is he's a really tough evaluation for NFL people. I'd compare him to a Jake Plummer. He doesn't have a big arm, he doesn't have a big body, he can run, but he's not some kind of elite athlete. ... he won't blow anybody away in terms of what he does in workouts. He'll need to stand on what he's done on the field. That's a lot, but it might not be first-round material at this point."
I won't change that assessment much now. But remember: Plummer isn't some bad comparison. Fans tend to think that if you don't compare a guy like McCoy to Drew Brees or Steve Young, you're slighting him. But the great majority of NFL quarterbacks are failures by any measure, much less compared to Hall of Famers. Plummer was a very productive NFL quarterback. He could extend plays with his feet and was resourceful. He was accurate but not blessed with a cannon. He was a lot like McCoy.
So why is the BCS title game so big for McCoy in terms of NFL stock?
It comes down to competition. The bottom line for McCoy this year is that the Texas captain hasn't impressed when you truly felt like the playing field was level. When he faced teams that had the kind of talent Texas has, he struggled; against the Oklahoma Sooners, McCoy had to dink and dump exclusively (21-of-39, 127 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT); against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, he was bad (20-36, 184 yards, 3 INTs).
Even against the Oklahoma State Cowboys -- who spent much of the year in the Top 20 -- McCoy was efficient (16-of-21) but didn't get the ball downfield at all. This year, he hasn't in general. McCoy's yards per attempt is at its lowest in his four years.
Now he gets a chance to show that he can perform at an elite level against a great defense. If he can somehow find ways to extend plays against a swarming defense, if he can get the ball into intermediate and deeper areas against a strong secondary, if he can make accurate throws not just underneath but to receivers and backs who need the throw to be perfectly placed, McCoy may jump a grade.
If he struggles -- as he did against Nebraska's tough defense in the Big 12 championship game -- he could drop.
McCoy has a chance. This year may be an aberration and more a product of his surroundings -- the offensive talent is down this year in Austin, which is a limiting factor. But I don't see a star. I see Jake Plummer, a guy who also went in the second round, and frankly, didn't turn out bad at all.
I have mixed opinions about McCoy. He's a much better prospect than Frye ever was, but he will come into the league with limitations. Frankly, I'd rather go for one of the two big prospects in the 1st round or not go QB at all.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

I think McCoy is as close to a perfect fit for a WCO QB as there is in this draft. Smart, good decision maker, accurate, mobile - reminds me of Hasselbeck in those regards. Size and arm strength are two concerns, yes, but still I think he's the best fit for a WCO.
To be honest, I'd put money on Seattle taking him in round 2 if he's still there. Though if he were available, I'd definitely consider taking him with our 2nd round pick - assuming we move to more of a truer WCO. My preference would be to pick up a Pennington or Clemens in FA (assuming DA is cut due to $) and draft CB, OLB, OT, and TE with our first 4 picks...

Agree,....
I read the other thread talking about Dan at CMich. That's who I would consider, IF you're gonna make me take one. If not him, then you go all-in at pick #7 and take Sam.
Otherwise,...NO QB !!

I'll pass on McCoy and I will say that this is a sad, sad year for quarterbacks in the draft. There is only one that I like and I definately don't want to use the pick that it will take to get him assuming he is still there. Obviously i'm talking about Clausen.

I've made my observations on McCoy..and I'm just not impressed with him especially in big games..but guess what? The biggest game is on tomorrow night, and he'll get a chance to improve his stock..or not. I have read some that have said he is a good QB to run the WCO..I just don't think so..like some of the other QB's I question arm strength among other things. If you are anyone thinks I don't like the QB's coming out, you're right..I haven't seen one that makes me go "WOW"..

All the more reason why we should draft God's grandson, Timmy Tebow, instead.

My best comparison for McCoy would be Jeff Garcia, and that ain't bad if we go WCO.
If Holmgren sees him worthy of a second round pick, and he is available, I would take him.

See Mr. Toad, sir.. (hope that's not too formal... ) we can agree on some QB issues... Quote:

You know I am opposed to a QB in this draft but if we are going to take one, if the powers that be can not be persuaded to give it another year before taking that leap... then go big or don't go at all. We don't need a developmental prospect, we don't need a guy with serious limitations.. yea, they all have question marks and concerns but for my money, and it would be a lot of it, I either take Bradford or I pass on the QB class this year.

Sorry to butt in, but I fell for that with Adrian Peterson too,...if not Sam, then you go LeFevour (sp?) or you don't go at all.
UNLESS you think Tebow is all that. He would be the only other I would even give slight consideration to, and then NOT as a pure QB,...but rather as a guy,...like Cribber,...who could fill eight roster spots. I'M SERIOUS.
Maybe a QB, Backup QB, Punter, LB, NT, Safety, TE, HB, #3WR.
Somebody is going to take that kid in the first round.
But McCoy ? NO, as our QB "need" pick. No thanks.

Yeah but with the Adrian peterson thing I still would have taken Thomas.
I'm just curious about Bradford because one of the things that gets picked apart about him is his arm strength. With the surgery being on his throwing shoulder that might concern me a little bit if i'm a GM.
I hardly ever watched Bradford so I can't really weigh in too much on the subject. Just curious what the thoughts were about it.

Tebow anyone?
He's smart, mobile, and strong.
Yeah his release is slow, but that can be worked on.
Plus, he comes with a built in fan base and is sure to get lots of media exposure in other markets.
If we are taking a chance on a qb, then why not Tebow?

Don't get me wrong,...I STILL butt heads with my Little Brother Oklahoma fan over that one,....he still thinks we should have looked at AP. I would have quit if they hadn't selected JT.

None of these guys impress me at all, but I am a horrible talent evaluator (I may also be the first person to ever type that on these boards! ) IMO, Tebow is the most interesting guy. He can either revolutionize the team he goes to, or drag them down like a dead weight. It's about 50/50, as far as I'm concerned, so I'd prefer it not be the Browns to take that gamble.

Yes, that is exactly what golfers do. When you sit with your golfing buddys and listen to them embellish a golf story, even though you were there, it is poor form to correct them.

I must have missed the part where "His lack of arm strength will get him exposed in the NFL" is pimping a player.
