Rome is actually one of the few in the media who likes Cleveland and gives props to the fans for being so passionate.

That may be true, but on his radio show he tries to hard to be entertaining. He plays with that stupid buzzer and just repeats the same material over and over again.

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns Pro Bowl all-purpose star Josh Cribbs cleaned out his locker in Berea today, said his good-byes and told The Plain Dealer he feels like he's played his last down of football for the Cleveland Browns.
"I said good-bye to some people on the medical staff, some of the equipment guys and the coaches,'' he said. "I wished the coaches luck and told them I hoped they kept their job. But it absolutely felt like the last time I'd be setting foot inside the building. I feel like it's over for me in Cleveland.''
Cribbs said he was thrilled that Browns coach Eric Mangini kept his job, and said he felt like he contributed to that decision.
"I'd like to think that some of my play over those last four games helped those guys keep their jobs, including my two kickoff returns for touchdowns against Kansas City,'' he said. "I wonder how many jobs would've been lost if I hadn't laid it on the line for them every single week?''
Cribbs said the Browns' $1.4 million a year offer feels "like I've been betrayed and stabbed in the back. I'm not just insulted by the number, but by the fact they consider me just a kick returner. I'm so much more than that.''
Cribbs said based on the "take it or leave it offer'' he's not at all optimistic about being back and that he'll most likely demand a trade in the near future.
"There's no way I'll play another down for the Browns without the new contract,'' he said. "They won't let me sit, because I have value. They'd be forced to trade me.''
Cribbs said "I'm shocked they make me an offer like that after all I've done for this team. They told me to be the good soldier and prove it on the field and I did that. I can't be told to wait again. I just don't see it happening now.''
Cribbs' agents said Wednesday that Cribbs will leave the team by the start of the league year March 4 if his contract is not re-done. They were miffed that several messages to Dawn Aponte, vice president of football administration, and new president Mike Holmgren were not returned, even when given a deadline of 5 p.m Tuesday to do so.
As for Holmgren retaining Mangini, Cribbs said, "that's a good decision by Mike Holmgren. He's the right man for the job. Guys have started to buy into his system. I feel like a good football mind would know that coach Mangini has this team going in the right direction. I can't see another coach coming in here and creating the impact that he's done so far. I feel like that's a job well done right there.''

Yeah and at just over 600K per year, it won't hurt them to let his butt sit.

The roster spot is far more valuable than the money.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

That's true. I was curious though, when Tampa Bay sat Keyshawn did he count towards the roster?

I never would have thought Cribbs would say anything like that. He sounds like a prima donna. "I saved everyone's job....therefore pay me what I want within 3 days or I'll go to the media and cry like a baby."
Look, I think he needs a new contract but this isn't the right way to go about it. Him and his agent look awfully childish and stupid right now.

Yes it will, for a while,...he is our best player,...NOW. In 6 months from now, he won't. He knows we're on the move; keeping Mangini, hiring Holmgren, 11 draft picks, all positive--except his contract. As the TEAM gets better, his role will diminish. That's why he wants to get this done now. When we start putting up 35 a game in a WCO, we won't need a KR. "They" will.

I am shocked he said that, too and had the same feeling about him patting himself on the back to get his new contract.
I thought he deserved to make some more money, but the more I hear come out of his mouth, I'm not so sure. I know he's been patient, but I don't understand the sudden rush to get this done by a certain day and time.

We may see just how quickly one can go from fan favorite to arrogant jackbutt. I give the guy props on being the NFL's all-time leader in KR touchdowns but to really say that puts me at a loss for words.

You are a "special teamer" so I will say yes more than just a kick returner. However, he is not that much more. He can't play QB, RB, or WR full time. Therefore you won't get paid as such. You have three years remaining on a deal that you previously negotiated. That is the reality of the situation. You need the Browns more than they need you right now since they control your fate.
I can't wait until we're actually a good all-around football team to where we won't need massive contributions from special teams guys to get 5 wins in a year. The guy sounds childish right now. I mean the entire Cribbs camp is being a bunch of melodramatic babies. Mike Holmgren JUST started working as team president and has yet to hire a GM and put his front office staff in place. He has bigger fish to fry than a player (who is only good for special teams and the occasional flash package plays) who wants their big pay day to come.
My point: Shut up and know your place and true value in the grand scheme of things.
Politicians are puppets, y'all. Let's get Geppetto!

OK Josh,...I'm moving on.
Put Lawson back there; he looked OK in the preseason returning kicks.
And Robo, I have a role for you now. You can return punts like you did at Ohio State.
Goodnight, Josh.

Disclaimer: This is Devil's Advocate. I do NOT want to get rid of Cribbs, not at all.
[Devil's Advocate]
What if Cribbs is a product of a very good special teams unit?
I will say that he is a total beast on the coverage units. There's no masking that.
But what if his returns are opened up a lot by the guys around him? He has tackle breaking ability, no doubt. But is there someone else out there who could do just as much in the return game? That I just don't know.
He is extremely fun to watch. Every time he gets the ball, it could turn into something big.
But is he just a product of good ST play?
[/Devil's Advocate]
you don't really need to play devils advocate here. We have a very good special team unit, and Cribbs benefits from those blocks with his returns. This part of his game is easily replaced. The coverage on kicks he would be missed. As a WR, we will be a much better team when he is not out there. He is a nice gimmick player for the wildcat. Add it all up and what is he worth- I don't know the answer but 2-2,5 m sounds about right. Threatening a hold out when MH has been in town less then a week is stupid.

Where has the last 20+ months of him "taking the high road" gotten him? What are 3 wins a year worth to an NFL franchise?
The Browns make this much selling #16 jerseys - aside from everything on the field.

You're definitely not the only one.
His agent's comments on ABO were very telling, although they had to be taken with a grain of salt, obviously. Alas, that can't be discussed here until MKC or Grossi write an article about it.

Nobody is disagreeing with WHAT he is saying...
Nobody will say that he doesn't deserve a better contract and that one is long overdue.
It's the HOW. He (well, him and his agents), don't seem to understand that they have no leverage, yet they're making these power plays as if they're in control.
It sucks that he has to keep waiting through these regime changes. That sucks, but that's just how it is. They won't write him a new contract while searching for a GM at the same time.
Cribbs just has to be patient. I agree that it sucks, but it's just the situation that he's in right now. By signing that contract, he has no one to blame but himself.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

his leverage is his play on the field..
the browns would be picking at the 3 spot if it weren't for cribbs..
He helped them save money in that regard as well!!! PAY THE MAN!!

I guess I am not upset with what Cribbs is saying it is just the timing. I mean at least let them hire a G.M. and figure out who is going and who's staying before you start making demands. What if they bring in a new O.C. that is a west coast guy and does not use any wild cat. Is a special teams guy worth what Cibbs will be looking for.

It's rediculous, how many times this guy gets screwed. Steve Tasker said on Sunday, Cribbs is the best special teamer of all time.
Give the guys 3-4 million per year already. How many stiffs have received that type of money over the years?? Plenty, and not too many could say their the best of all-time at their position.
Giving Cribbs some more money won't put us in salary cap hell. Plus he could run the wildcat on offense. He's more than a special team player.

but he has gone too far saying that he is the reason why the coaches have their jobs still. What he's saying may be true, but only in regards to the coaches, not with MH. However, saying those words to the press was a bad move. He just devalued himself.
Next time, take the high road, Josh.
Just a thought... I wonder how much Josh thinks he's worth. I wonder what his agents are telling him he's worth.

he's not above the team. he's not above us deciding on mangini and on us hiring a gm.
they are acting foolish for the browns starting off at a low number. he will get his, but to put himself as such a priority when much BIGGER things are happening at the same time is foolish and will not get what he, and more importantly, his agent wants. his agent is going ape because this agent never saw any cribbs contract money. of course he wants to cash in asap. if cribbs were objective about this, he'd see that it makes no sense to deal with extensions before a gm was hired. now, if he saw 7 other guys got new contracts before he did, fine, be pissed. now is not the time.

I got to this point yesterday. Holmgren is barely in the building, he has a GM and coaching staff to worry about to prepare for the upcoming draft and here comes Cribbs and his agents wagging this trash in the press.
Yeah, I'd like him paid but I'm liking it a lot less as the days go by.

We all agree that Josh should get that kind of money but the way he is doing it is starting to bother people including me. Arrogance is annoying. Confidence is great, but I liked him better without his bragging that he is the reason that Mangini is still there. Making comments like "The more I play(on the existing contract proving himself), the more they gonna pay!

Anyone who is lamenting the timing of this has our FO to blame. They could've told him "let us get things in place and we'll handle your deal then" but instead they came to him and said "$1.4 mil, take it or leave it."

Still man, this franchise was a trainwreck! No surprise they couldn't rework a contract they could barely get out of their own way!
If he remained on the high road and decided to leave he'd have taken many fans with him. I thought he was the freshest thing in the NFL and a mans man but am rapidly viewing him as just another moron crying about disrespect!

Except that he's right. That's what is sad. He beat pittsburgh basically by himself. After all he's done and they way he's been, I'm giving him a helluva lot of slack for whatever he says now. He's responding emotionally. Probably he shouldn't, but I'm not going to hold it against him. He's getting screwed.

just clicking....
I haven't read any other replies, nor do I intend to, but here is my $0.02:
Cribb's agent is in the right on this. They were told to do their thing and that they'd be taken care of. Cribbs more than did his thing, and now he is getting a slap in the face. Yes, it is the initial round of negotiations, but damn man... at least come out and start things in good faith, with some respectable numbers. $1.whatever/year for what he brings to the team really IS an insult, it's a complete joke.
I'd be pissed, too if I were them. If not for Cribbs, I can almost guarantee that we lose those last four games - Harrison's contributions included - and Mangini would be hanging from a 1-15 record and there would be a VERY different feeling about town (not too mention that the damned Steelers would be in the playoffs).
Thank-you..
They have been playing ball for over a year now playing the waiting game as their client and them produced and towed the company line.
Now we are going to....excuse the expression....Jew them from the very bottom of the barrel trying to squeeze the last nickle out of this??
Screw that. His agents should be fired if they put up with that.
The only leverage they have at this point is to do exactly what they are doing....make the Browns look like fools because it looks like the Browns are trying to make them look like fools.
In the court of public opinion, Cribbs gets the votes. If we force the guy to sit, even if offered a 7th rounder, we look like the bad guy.
And we are.
The guy has earned every penny and more. He knows it. His agents know it, the fans know it, and the Browns know it.
Quit dicking the guy around.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I don't care how badly you are getting screwed, you still STFU in public. Just go about doing whatever it is you will do (trade request, whatever) like an adult. Be disgruntled all you like...with your family, agents, friends, etc. Don't let us hear you cry.
I like Josh and want him to get paid, but I don't like him running his mouth and taking credit for everything good this season. There's no "I" in team.

Nope its not just you. Cribbs has been the only bright spot on this team, the one and only guy who you can honestly say gave it his all. I think he is more than justified in giving management the middle finger here. In NFL terms he is making a paupers salary, yet is everywhere on the field. When even the soldja says the guy is superman people should take note. How often does a guy like Winslow give props to any other player ? Cribbs easily deserves 3 mill a year. Easily. Im offended that the team has gone this route.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...
