Didn't see this posted...

Will Lewis, the director of pro personnel for the Seattle Seahawks, will interview for the Cleveland Browns' general manager's job Friday, a source told ESPN.com.

Lewis was flying to Cleveland on Thursday and will meet with Mike Holmgren, the Browns' newly installed president.

Lewis and Holmgren have strong working ties. Lewis joined the Seahawks in 1999 at the same time Holmgren became the team's coach and general manager. Seattle won four NFC West titles under their stewardship.

Lewis had been the Green Bay Packers' assistant director of pro scouting before going to Seattle.

Meanwhile, Holmgren interviewed Philadelphia Eagles general manager Tom Heckert on Wednesday. The Browns fired George Kokinis as general manager in early November, and Holmgren has yet to decide if Eric Mangini will remain the team's coach.

This would satisfy the Rooney Rule as well.

Here's his bio from the Seahawks page.

Will Lewis joined the Seahawks' football operations staff as the team's Director of Pro Personnel on May 20, 1999, following three years with the Green Bay Packers (1997-99) scouting department.

With the Packers, he worked closely with Seahawks' Executive Vice President & Head Coach Mike Holmgren. From 1998-99, Lewis served as the Packers' Assistant Director of Pro Personnel, following one year as a pro scout. Prior to his work with the Packers, Lewis was a defensive assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons, under June Jones, from 1995-96.

Lewis, signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent cornerback in 1980 out of Millersville State (Pa.), played in 26 games returning 45 kickoffs for a 21.4-yard average and 56 punts for an 8.0-yard average, including a 75-yard touchdown, as a rookie versus the Denver Broncos. Following his Seahawks career, Lewis played three seasons with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL from 1983-85, and three seasons (1986-89) in the Canadian Football League.

Lewis began his coaching career in the NFL Europe League with the New York/New Jersey Knights from 1991-92. He also coached defensive backs at his alma mater, Millersville State, from 1992-93, before brief stints at the University of Maine (1994) and the University of West Virginia (1995).

Lewis and his wife, Kimmberly, have three sons; Ryan, and twins Drew & Troy and a daughter Krysta.

Everything that I have read leds me to believe that Heckert is a done deal. This might be rooney rule only, esp with Heckert canceling his gm interview in Seattle.

Plain Dealer suggests that maybe we'd bring on both guys (I doubt it).

• As expected, Holmgren will interview Will Lewis, Seahawks director of pro personnel, for the GM position.

The Plain Dealer reported that Lewis would be a prime candidate as soon as Holmgren accepted the job as team president.

Lewis, a former NFL cornerback, broke in as a scout under Holmgren with the Green Bay Packers. After Lewis' contract in Green Bay ran out, he rejoined Holmgren in Seattle in 1999 in the pro personnel department.

Lewis' interview fulfills the Browns' obligation to comply with the Rooney Rule as it pertains to the GM position.

It is known that Holmgren values Lewis in the personnel department and it is possible that Holmgren will seek to hire both Lewis and Tom Heckert Jr., who interviewed for the GM job on Wednesday.

Heckert was also supposed to interview for the Seattle GM position, but a source told The Plain Dealer that Heckert canceled that interview following his visit to Cleveland.

No team has co-general managers. It's possible Heckert or Lewis -- more likely Lewis because of his experience -- could fill the role of player personnel director in Holmgren's plans.

But the Seahawks would be under no obligation to release Lewis from his contract for a lateral move. The fact the Seahawks are contemplating an organization overhaul, however, could free up Lewis.

I didn't hear that. Linky? I would agree with you that if he's canceling interviews (ones that he's already agreed to?) that that is a pretty good indication.

Ah, someone posted another article.

Anyone else think this interview is more about satisfying Rooney rule and hiring Heckertt and less about giving him a fair shake?

I'd like to think Mike Holmgren has more integrity than that.

Taking some leaps of faith here with logic, the Seahawks are contemplating a complete rebuild with their FO. If that's the case, they might not be opposed to Lewis leaving to take the same job with us. He clearly isn't in the same league as Heckert for the GM position, and Holmgren will know what's going on in Seattle behind the scenes more than anyone else in the league who isn't still on their payroll.

I wouldn't bring integrity into the argument...

It's called the Rooney RULE. The key word is the second one. He has to bring in a minority, even if he already knows who he wants.

The fact that there are all of these "sham" interviews is more of a reflection of how stupid the rule is, rather than the integrity of the hirers (is that a word? It should be.)

Just sayin...

Only thing that sucks is that if Heckert is the guy, we can't hire him until Philly is out of it. That will not bode well for many (including myself) as we demand instant gratification.

Not to worry... unless a completely different Iggles team shows up this weekend, we won't have to wait THAT long.

How can you have 4 NFC titles when your team has been to one Super Bowl? I'm assuming you meant NFC Worst, err...West titles.

Hehehe..............Well, take solace in the fact that while we can't officially hire him, he and Holmgren wouldn't be out of phone contact very long at all during the playoffs.

Regardless of whether or not Heckert is our guy, he and Holmgren have been in touch quite a bit for weeks, if not months. They know where they are at. If it's the right fit, the media will give you all the instant grat you'd ever ask for

It's also possible that MH actually WANTS Lewis here in Berea, and this is his opportunity to get him here... whether for a GM job, or as the article states, a lateral move.

2 birds/ 1 stone.

Him canceling pretty much spells done deal. I like him.

Mangini? still up in the air how that will go. Heckert will have his realm and Mangini his...I can see it will coexist...why we have Holmgren!

Complete overhaul in Seattle...then I would Assume complete overhaul here including Mangini.

Lewis would take care of the Rooney Rule...but also if an overhaul in Seattle happens he will come here to be Heckarts right hand man...head of Personnel.

Oh and Mangini gone cause Mora would be our new HC.

JMHO

"I shudder to think of us becoming the Cleveland Seahawks."

I know it would suck having a Playoff run every December and actually getting to a SB...I shudder too - Why would one expect the Worst of what Seattle did...and not actually see what they had and maybe Holmgren can work it and make it better here than what he made in Seattle.

Don't know if you cook but whenever I do - I make a mess and don't clean up...but I'm a pretty good cook

Anyways when I'm doing a New Dish...and then do it the next time, it seems to get better n better

Well his first try at the recipe was pretty darn GOOD!!! What makes you think he's going to get WORSE AT IT...and not BETTER.

Cause we are Browns fans and destined for Misery?

Sorry its easy to have this glass half filled

Any of them.

Not saying that I wouldn't be happy with their record, just that, in light of playing in what is far and away the worst division in the NFL over the past decade, its not as impressive as it looks on paper. Just not as excited as some in potentially bringing in the entire FO of a team that went 86-74 under Holgren's decade-long watch.

The news about Heckert potentially being our GM with Holmgren as president has me just itching to but out the nanner dance. I've been pimping Heckert (albeit not as loudly as most do their guys but he was my clear #1) since the job opening became available and think he is exactly the guy I want in charge of talent acquisition.

I remember someone asked me about that, "Oh great another 'young up and coming whiz-kid. Doesn't that sound too much like Savage?'" or something along those lines and just chuckled. He is no Phil Savage.

The entire FO? It's one guy. Its hard to argue with Heckert and Lewis being a part of this FO being a good partnership with Holmgren.

I'm referring to the people who are speculating that if there's wholesale change in the Seattle FO (which seems likely at this point) that we would bring on Mora and some of their assistants as well.

I want no part of Jim Mora JR. He is a terrible coach, even as an OC. Besides, for some reason, Seattle wants to keep JMJR.

Look at it this way... his background as a defensive coordinator would completely explain your impression of him as a lousy OC.

I have never been impressed with Seattle.
Seattle had the destinction of winning the worse division in football, and the advantage of visiting teams travelling three time zones to get there.
One year all the peices fell into place for them.
They had a good o-line in the mddle of the decade, decent qb,decent rb.Hardly a model franchise.
Holmgren, yeah ok if we must, but leave the rest on the west coast.
