I know,... but the point is/could be, we need a guy like Revis. I don't care where he comes from, but I would prefer we draft our own. I think with Mangini being retained and all of the karma surrounding the new regime, this kind of thinking isn't a pipe dream.

Here it is again, mac... just like I predicted last week. I really don't know for sure what Mangini ever did to these folks for the hatefest to be so fueled up, but their disdain for the man is palpable. Here is a perfect example: Quote:
That’s understandable. Mangini is a very smart guy. He is a very persuasive individual who has the ability to tell you what you want to hear. He fooled Lerner and has now added Holmgren to his list of victims. Give him credit. He’s a survivor.
Talk about your 'backhanded compliments.' In one swift stroke, he managed to paint Mangini as a crafty villain and Holmgren as the unsuspecting dupe.
I said it in post #650239, and I'll repeat: these hacks wanted Mangini gone (for whatever reason), and it'll take a long time and many wins before they'll be able to ratchet down their hatred for the man.
Now Passan writes this bile-filled piece of tripe like some jilted high school girl and casts Holmgren as some fool... or worse, a lazy SOB who kept Mangini just because he didn't want to go through the hard work of hiring someone Passan likes.
It's clear to me that these beat writers were looking for ABM (anybody but Mangini) when MH came in, and were shocked when The Big Show threw a bucket of cold water on their wet dreams. Nobody enjoys being made to look foolish, which is exactly what happened.
Maybe they'd look less stupid if they'd stuck to reporting stories from right down the middle, instead of tilting the slant so far that they lost their balance. I for one said repeatedly that Holmgren might retain Mangini... but then, I never hated the guy. Maybe one of us posters should have his job instead... at least the readers would have a chance at a balanced article every once in awhile.
If Passan wants to retain any shred of credibility with his readers, he'd better tone down this malice right now, or risk looking even dumber than he already does. In case he hasn't been keeping track, jounalism jobs aren't all that easy to come by these days.

yea, i read that and what was interesting is that most of other beat writers all have had a "turning the page" article on mangini. pat, shaw, terry, they've all pretty much said they want to start over and see that mangini could be a good coach. dunno what's up with passan. Quote:
Holmgren said he has experienced no buyer’s remorse since telling Eric Mangini last week that he will be back as head coach of the Browns.
“Getting to know Eric ... it gets better every day. It really does,” Holmgren said. “He’s a good football coach.”
Holmgren says he wants to mentor Mangini. He’s trying to get him to loosen up a bit.
“Once in a while, I’ll crack and joke, and he’ll laugh a little bit,” Holmgren said. “I’ll tell Eric, ‘That’s good stuff. You should do that more often.’ ”

MH wants to mentor mangini. an arguably good defensive guy being mentored by a great offensive guy? hopeully that results in a dangerous coach...

I've never really understood this argument that Passan and others have made about Mangini, that the only way anyone hires/retains him is because he "fools" them. I could buy that he might have persuaded Lerner on certain things, but no way he tricks smart guys like Holmgren who have been around the game for decades.
This is underscored by this article by Mary Kay Cabot:
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/01/cleveland_browns_mike_holmgren_3.html
It says that Holmgren consulted with Parcells about Mangini and received a "glowing report." Now there is absolutely no way Mangini "fooled" Bill Parcells into thinking so highly of him; I've never heard of Parcells pulling any punches or going to bat for someone he doesn't believe in.

I'll add my two cents on Mangini. Some of the complaints about Mangini have centered on a few topics. Most of these complaints have merit.
1. The Draft 2. Mis-evaluation of talent, putting guys in the wrong places 3. Not playing the right players 4. Not getting enough for Braylon
My opinion is this (probably not a new one, but what the heck, its late and I don't want to read 200+ posts to find out if I am duplicating): Mangini has coached only four years in this league. IMO, in NY where he was just the coach, he did not have nearly as much trouble with 2 and 3; in fact many of the players he used are in the same positions on a pretty good Jets playoff team this year.
Here, through a series of circumstances we may never know, Mangini became a GM/coach. Now this rarely works with Hall of Fame caliber coaches, so why would it work with a young coach in his fourth year? Since he seemed to make a lot better coaching decisions in NY where he didn't have GM duties, I suspect that many of his shortcomings as a coach resulted from him handling GM duties as well. And his shortcomings in the GM department are probably a result of both overwork and never performing those duties before.
In short, to reach a fair assessment of what he is capable of as a coach, it's more applicable to look at what he did in NY, not necessarily what he did as a GM/coach here.
