not just folks on DT, but the Cribbs camp jumped to conclusions even worse and then flew off the handle.

the Cribbs camp should apologize after this is all over, but I doubt they will

Not the entire board... but just like seemingly every other board on the internet, those are the ones that scream the loudest.

Anyway, this is good news... as I hoped, cooler heads have prevailed, and it sounds like there's enough common ground there to get it done.

Line Judge...yep, Cribbs and his two agents took to the airwaves in a way that I have never seen before...only problem was...they thought the offer came from Holmgren...it didn't.

Holmgren had only been in town a matter of hours and had not yet hired the front office people who would be handling contracts for him when Cribbs and his agents hit every radio and TV program that would allow them.

Hopefully the Cribbs folks can show a little patients...

Thankee, Dong! A SENSIBLE read; I figured when MH stepped in that it would improve. Message is there that Browns want him; also, message is there that the club won't be strongarmed by artificial deadlines imposed by players' agents. Subtle message is also that maybe not indispensable, despite opinions to the contrary in a personal setting. Reasonable figures for a contract favor, talked about sensibly, and which rewards outstanding past performance, a demonstarted improved upside, and potential expanded future use. I never expected the first Aponte offer to be thew only "last, best" offer, or a "take it or else" play.

I thought the way that Cribbs and his agents handled it was tacky in light of it being holmgrens second day on the job when they decided to run thier mouths to anyone that would listen.. TACKY in the highest order..

But I'm glad that it appears to be moving in the right direction.. Cribbs should fire those idiots.. they have caused him to be embarrased.

Oh, I'm saying much more than that, but we'll just stick with what you said and leave it at that.

As for Cribbs, he needs to check his own ego. Twice this season he's put himself ahead of the team and looked like a spoiled brat-athlete doing it.

Aponte is still employed by the Browns, but The Plain Dealer reported that she might leave to join the Dolphins.

huh,....I thought she was gone already. I could've sworn there was an article posted a couple weeks ago saying that she and some others were fired.

We all figured it would go this way- no wait, we didn't. But I did.... not sure what would leave anyone to think otherwise. Holmgren said himself that they wouldn't make a take-it or leave-it offer.

I'm a little disappointed in Cribbs and his agent with their overreaction and drama queen approach to it all. Holmgren was there an entire 24 hours, and they think a contract should have been done and finalized? Give me a break, there were a LOT more pressing issues that needed addressed that week, where Cribbs' issue didn't need addressed at that time. Hell, they still have almost a month and a half.

Hopefully it gets done so we don't have to hear about it again.

yeah,...they really did seem to over-react considering all the changes taking place in Berea.........BUT........things are moving well now and who's to say their complaining didn't have something to do with it.

Me.

All the crying did was hurt the image of Team-Cribbs. What did it to the Browns? It forced them to go to the most drastic of extreme:

They made a statement

This reminds me of a kid I saw in 2003 at a local Ford dealership when I was buying a Cobra. He couldn't have been 18 or 19, and had sat down in the cubicle behind me to talk turkey with his salesman. My sales guy had been dismissed so I could talk to his boss directly, but his was working the kid over. I was eaves-dropping and heard the sales guy say "We're glad your interested in the truck, but this is our best offer." The kid stood up and started yelling about how he was insulted at how he was being treated and literally shed a couple of tears because he couldn't afford the truck of his dreams. His dad showed up at the dealership ten minutes later and reminded him that he'd warned he didn't have a clue how negotiations happen.

That kid was an idiot. Should have bought the Cobra you were looking at instead of the Pick-em-up anyway. Kids....

We can all speculate but unless we're in the heads of MH and TH.....NOBODY knows for sure. I never doubted the deal would be done and the original responses to the Cribbs issue were professionally and politically correct.

It's kinda like when you're trying to make your point toad,.....I'm not SURE why you'd include such statements like..." I was buying a Cobra." .....or...."My sales guy had been dismissed so I could talk to his boss directly".....but I can definately speculate.

$3.4-3.8 per year, really? You do realize that 3.6/year is the equivalent of the #18 overall pick in the draft from last year? Would you draft him #18 overall if you had the chance today? Would anyone trade a mid first rounder for him if they had the chance today?

I'm all for paying the guy, but at an appropriate salary. Offer 2 million a year base plus incentives - $200k per TD, 500k for pro bowl, things like that.

If you are going to stop paying old bums hopefully you are going to replace with legit players who are going to want paid.. and just because we have wasted money on other people in the past is no reason to give a good player an inflated contract.

Read down a couple of posts, and you'll see (from DC) why you don't dump that much money on a guy whos only well-defined role is that of an elite Special-Teamer. Money spent like that just ain't done, son. It ain't smart- for a variety of reasons that I won't go into now.

Here's what I might do, however:

I'd take your pie-in-the-sky 3.4 - 3.8, look at the 1.4 originally tendered, and split the difference.

That gives the inestimable Mr Cribbs a contractual payday of roughly 2.1 - 2.4M...and his slimy shark of an agent a nice 6-figure bonus, for being nothing more than an opportunistic anal orifice whom we want to go away.

I'd seriously backload the contract with year-by-year incentives to keep Josh hungry, and tell him that any extra gravy he earns will be based upon consistent, continued production.

THEN I'd tell him it's a 'take it or leave it' proposition.

Josh's agents will virtually hold him down and make him sign... because:

1. They want paid. Now.
2. They know it's a (more than) fair offer for the product they're selling
3. They know that they won't get a better offer from any other team.
4. They know that they won't get a better offer from the Browns.

End result: Team Cribbs gets a substantial payout, and stops looking like the whiny fools they've been so far. The agreed-upon deal looks close enough to the figure they initially broke to the public ("...if they had started at 2.5, we wouldn't have been insulted..."), and allows them to save face. The Browns get to quickly put to bed a stupid and unnecessary distraction, and most importantly....

Josh Cribbs gets to enjoy more than triple his current salary... without putting Cleveland Browns, Inc. in the poorhouse, without setting a dangerous precedent of overpaying future disgruntled performers, and without all the attendant bad press that a prolonged, nasty negotiation would bring.

3.4 - 3.8 is just plain stupid. I like my scenario much better. Millions is millions, yo. They all add up.

I hope for our sake that there's a lot of incentives/escalators in the contract. He'll need to continue to do what he did this year, particularly the second half, to deserve over $3million.

I agree.

But when I read the current salary of many of our players.........I don't even know how to say it. I'm amazed at how little some players that are good/decent get and how much some players that are bad/don't even play get.

The whole thing makes no sense to me - from a "current contributions" level. If that makes sense.

It doesn't make sense if you try and compare apples to oranges, and when you're trying to compare Cribbs' salary or even potential salary to existing players, that's exactly what you're doing.

It's never about salary versus salary. Tenure in the league is a huge factor. Position is a huge factor. Length of existing contract is a huge factor. So on and so forth.

If one tries to form an opinion based on what other players on a team make, nothing will make any sense and flawed opinions will be formed, which is why you have to compare what Cribbs makes against what others in the league at his position make and the structure of their contracts.
