Other than factors that have nothing to do with his play (i.e. acting like he's going to be exactly like BQ because he went to ND), what are all the arm-chair GMs in this thread basing Clausen busting on? You all seem to have arrived at such a solid, well-rounded conclusion.

I've also heard a lot about his attitude problems
Yep...Clausen's got Attitude alright...And I LOVE IT...Give me a dude that's gonna tell u right to your defensive face with 2 minutes to go "I'M COMIN' AT YOU"...
2 things will be pointed out about Clausen from now till draft day...
1) Attitude---BFD 2) Notre Dame...Bigger BFD
Clausen's gonna be a solid QB in the NFL...
PRAY that Bradford goes Top 5...I want no part of this dude...He's a MAJOR project coming from that Offensive System...He's a major hit or miss risk...
And anyone even thinking Tebow needs to realize he will get KILLED with that Slo-Motion delivery he has...And u don';t fix that...Winner or no winner...
Quinn if we stay pat...Clausen if we go new...
I hope not. Not after hearing about him being a grade a butthole.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Just clicking I was reading all this stuff on here about Clausen.. Wondering, how did another ND QB look back in the day.. I found this little bit of info on Joe Montana Quote:
Before the 1979 draft, one scouting combine rated Montana a 6½ (out of 9). The report said: "He can thread the needle, but usually goes with his primary receiver and forces the ball to him even when he's in a crowd. He's a gutty, gambling, cocky type. Doesn't have great tools, but could eventually start."
Phil Simms (Giants), Steve Fuller (Chiefs) and Jack Thompson (Bengals) were selected ahead of Montana, a late third-round pick by the 49ers acquired from Dallas.
Not for nothin, but he wasn't exactly thought of as a potential HOFer or Superbowl winner..
Nothing replaces heart and smarts.. with those two things, a player can overcome the lack of other tools..
I remember hearing things like, Can't miss, sure fire starter for years, leader, Rocket for an arm etc etc... said about guys like Ryan Leaf and David Klingler.....
Just thought I'd mention that...

Yup,, he sure did,, and no doubt, if there were a forum such as this back then, someone would have said that he sucks and shouldn't be considered because he has small hands and a weak arm..

I just love the small hands debate..
You could be the size of Shaq'zilla and have stick'm on ur hands, and a guy like Suggs, Harrison, Freeney are still gonna knock it loose.

I'd stop short of the Montana comparisons until he actually does something. I really hope we get a vet to start. Maybe i'll start the Hassleback pimp club, kind of like Toad's Cambell one

I wasn't comparing him to Montana.. I was speaking to pre draft chatter. How back in Montanas day, most thought he wasn't going to be a great NFL QB.. And how those same deep thinkers thought that Ryan and Klingler would be. Yikes,, talk about making snap judgements based on physical attributes while overlooking those things that can't be measured on a Stat Sheet.
Further, I don't know enough to pimp Clausen.. I've not seen him play beleive it or not.. So in no way am I comparing him to Montana..

What, you mean you weren't actually comparing Clausen to Montana??? On the topic, it is very annoying that we're going into yet another off-season with a muddy QB picture. It's like we are always doing THIS:

guess we would be best just signing an experienced QB, as opposed to drafting one.
If we can get a QB in the 2nd round and down.. I'm all for bringing in a QB for the low, cuz we need to ditch Anderson.. lol. other than that.. Keep Quinn in there..

doing my best Miss Cleo impression, here is how our QB position will prolly look in 2010:
- Quinn - a vet not named Anderson - a draftee/prospect
The development of Quinn into a starting QB is THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE SUCCESS OF THE ORGANIZATION at this point in time.
If that were to happen then the FO can concentrate on using the available resources to fill other areas of need. Those resources include Free Agency and the draft.
Mike has seen several good and great QBs and should be able to tell if BQ can be developed or not
Brady Quinn is NOT an NFL quarterback! I have NEVER seen a QB with a worse deep ball. In the NFL you don't have to have a rocket but you have to be able to complete a deep pass once or twice a game. I can only think of deep balls from Brady that were 5 yards out of bounce. Unless he fixes that, he not only doesn't have a career with us, he doesn't have a career with anyone.
So, I don't think either of these qbs are on our roster. After seeing Anderson not being forced to make plays, I believe our running game opened up because first we worked on the blocking scheme to make it happen with the current personnel and two, that is Anderson's only talent is being able to launch a deep ball.
Had Quinn been in there, I bet we would have lost at least two of those. I'd be more surprised to see Quinn on the Browns next year than Anderson. And I don't like either.

LOL the reason it feels like that is because we are indeed always doing that..
I think the only year that we went into the season knowing who our starter was for sure was year 2.. Couch and whatever year we brought in Dilfer.. oh, the year we brought in Garcia. I think that's it. So 7 or 10 years, we didn't KNOW who the starter was going to be.

If we have a or go the route of a stop gap I'd like to see them pick up Levi Brown out of Troy in the later rounds. Not sure where he'll go but he looked good in his bowl appearance and had solid season stats.

I believe we will go with a two year stop gap QB until the rest of the pieces are in place. Then possibly draft our feature QB or Quinn developes into what we had hoped we where drafting when we took him. That would mean getting a guy that is young enough to give us a few quality years. I think there are a few on the UFA list that fit that bill but one name I thought about earlier in the season was David Carr, in my opinion he has the talent to be a serviceable starter somewhere.
Picking seventh in the draft assuming Berry and Suh are no longer available I would go best OT available. I believe I have seen three projected in the top half of round one. Just my opinion.

If we go offensive lineman in the 1st round without trading out of the top 10 then I will call the 1st round a disappointment. I really don't see a huge difference between Campbell, Okung, Bulaga, Davis, etc. Therefore, one of them can be had around 15-20.... I think we need to go defensive or offensive playmaker in the 1st round. Too many times you can find great offensive line production out of later round talent.

How about Kurt Warner? When he retires offer him the bank to come to Cleveland! Then when we bring him here we bring in Mike Miller, Passing Game Coordinator, from Arizona. Sure we might have to give up some picks, but we have a few extra. Just my .02.

Why would Warner come to Cleveland? What do we have that he doesn't in AZ? He has a decent running game and top flight WRs on a team that is a threat to go deep in the playoffs every year.
There is no way we lure him to Cleveland and if I'm not mistaken, he signed a 2 year deal, but there are a lot of rumors of him retiring after this year.

I'd bet he does actually. I've read that the concussion he suffered early in the season scared him and I think it's no mistake we're hearing about his retiring. He was having all kinds of vision problems after that hit. Bother's got 26 kids to think about.

It seems that both Walsh and Holmgren didn't need much time to decide on whether a QB had it or not. The story goes that Walsh needed someone to throw to a receiver out of UCLA that he was looking at and Montana was in So. Cal. before the draft. So, he brings him in to throw to the guy and Walsh finds his QB. When the 49ers bring in Steve Young and Holmgren puts him through the paces, that's it. He's got it. Kinda like the "eye test".
I have no idea whether Holmgren will step out on the field, but if he did and wanted to put QB's through some drills, I sure would like to be close by when he looks at BQ in the eye and tells him what he thinks.
I can see him bringing in Hasselbeck and even Pennington while grooming his next project. But then, he has screwed my head up bigtime with this Dabol thing and I have no idea where he's coming from.
( Warner and Rogers really looked good today. Man, if we could find someone who had anywhere near the game of those two... )

Actually Holmgren knew Young from his BYU days, he was his coach there and on Walsh's staff when they traded for him from the Bucs. Hell of an 'eye test' to have coached a guy to greatness in college.
But that is neither here nor there, Holmgren helped develop him, Favre, Hasselback just to name a few. Had to have been MH whispering in Walsh's ear that the guy had 'it'.
With MH in charge, whatever or whoever we start the season with I will have faith the guy sees something in him because MH never won anything without a marquis qb and he will want that in Cleveland too.

I've been thinking about that very thing and it confuses me also. From the beginning of the season to about the by week, the offense we ran was pretty darned awful.. Predictable, bland and boring.
Something happened after the by week.. it got interesting to watch. It wasn't an overnight thing but more of a gradual shift. They became less predictable and more effective. Certainly a hell of a lot more fun to watch as well....
Was that Dabolls doing? Dunno... Apparently Holmgren thinks that Daboll had enough to do with it otherwise, why keep him.
This is one of those things that if we didn't have a credible leader at the top of the organization, I might be upset about., but I'm not.

Donovan McNabb anyone?
I could see Philly going down the Favre/Rodgers route where they try to trade McNabb while he still has some value. I think they are high on Kevin Kolb and they have a lot of young weapons that he could start to grow with.....just a thought, not sure how likely or how much they would want in return?

At this point, I would really like to hear what Holmgren is thinking,...
I would just as soon gamble on a #2 or #3 LeFevour. (I don't believe Tebow will get out of the First Round). I know it would be a "project" but if Quinn doesn't work out, then at least you're in a position to retool with a long term possibility rather than a short term McNabb fix,...OR,...wait till next year for Locker, et al.
IF they go with the BPAQB in the first, then we'll know what's up.

i like the idea of LeFevour...He is a Tebow style QB but i think he's more apt to become a good NFL QB because he seems more willing to throw to a spot than Tebow.
Plus...more MAC QBs in the AFCN cant be boring

yeah wojo...once Heckert signs today...we will be hearing a lot of McNabb and Kolb solutions/rumors and speculations, especially from the Bozo's
We got Clausen I guess cause of Quinn? We got Hasselback cause of MH? We got McNabb n Kolb cause of Heckert?
Don't we have anyone here related to somebody from Oklahoma???

Is Ryan Mallet coming out in 2010?
If so, I wouldn't mind Mallet as a developmental pick for a year or two. Obviously, he would have to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd Round to be worthwhile.

Not a 100% sure on this, but I thought I read that he was staying in school next season.

I don't know if it has been offical yet or not, but staying in school would be his best interest. He's extremely raw, but the tools are there to be a Top 5 Pick next year or 2012.
