I figure a RT is an absolute must, RG Fraley or Hadnot could fill in. Tucker ain't coming back. We do need some young'uns to develop for the future.

WR, Robiskie could develop and Stallworth might return. A second MoMass type would be nice.

RB, we keep Harrison, Jennings and the prospect Davis. Can we find the next Matt Forte?

QB, Quinn could improve to be barely adequate, but assuming DA goes due to dollars, we need either a backup to develop or somebody who makes BQ the backup. I just can't stand another crushing dissappointment here.

Cornerback, Francis or Lawson could develop, both untested youngsters so IMO we need one. McDonald needs to be the nickle.

Safety I think Poole should retire or we should force him to for his own safety, Elam may improve but we need at least one. Hey, I referenced safety safety here.

Linebacker we need a beast but I am OK with what we have. Roth seems a real find.

DL also OK, though if we trade Rogers and/or Williams, with Smith aging, we could get thin here.

I'm left with RT, CB, and Safety as absolute must areas needing improvement. If the FO does not address these areas, then they are not as smart as they are supposed to be. If they do, then I can start to dream again, at least until the season starts.

Needs in this order:

1) Right Tackle
2) Free Safety
3) Right Guard
4) Strong Safety

Every other position addressed in the off season is to unseat pretty solid starters or for depth.

I would add MLB to the need spot as well, but only address it if we can get either McClain or Spikes, otherwise, let Maiva take over.

I think, in order, our needs are as follows for 2010.

1. RB
2. RT
3. WR
4. FB
5. S
6. CB
7. OLB
8. RG

Resigning some of our FAs could take care of these spots, like Harrison and Vickers.

I see this a bit differently perhaps. I see one set of "needs" with proven vets who have produced' experience is a premium in some skilled positions more than others, and I want a few vets to develop and mentor (good sad case would be BQ with Dorsey's extreme skills and experience). I shutdown veteran corner, and one solid runblocking right tackle. One deep threat with serious speed.
Many of the needs in the draft can be had: premium on pass crushers, corners, maybe a later QB, and a premium punter. I think OL and defensive line dominate later rounds, receivers and corners in the middle, and get Suh if possible.

in no particular order:
LB
S
CB(2)
T
G
TE
QB

So much depends on the return of players like Heiden, Pool, Barton, Jackson, Roth, Anderson and Tucker among others.

We have the same needs when Mangini took over 1 year ago...just worse at some positions:

we still need a RT and RG and FS more than ever....a WR...a TE....a RB....a QB...an ILB, 1or2 pass rushing OLBs....a SS too since Elam looks like a bust pickup (sometimes decent against the run, absolutely LOST in pass pro)...and a CB

at least he upgraded on Fraley at C...at the cost of the highest invested pick on that position this decade ....yeah Eric, C was our biggest offseason need

4 1st day picks and 10 Jets pickups later...we still are (at best) where he picked this team up....as I said then: a bunch of useless lateral moves in FA and probably the dumbest drafting (considering our needs and BPA positions) I ever had to endure....drafting 2 identical slow footed poss-WR prospect with low ceiling in round 2 takes the cake though

Look at some idnetical thread last January....probably posters have the same positons listed (+1-2 more now)...no joke, look it up...so much for the "process"

Safety
Corner
RG
Inside Linebacker
QB
Big Running Back
WR
RT

Of course, that's JMHO. Safety HAS to be #1 though. Pool may never play again and we were starting a WR at the same position.

Corner because McDonald is a #3 ideally and Mike Adams is a backup.

I'm torn between RT and RG. We need one of them, though, and I think Womack is probably more serviceable.

We desperately need someone under 30 and good to play inside with DQ Jackson.

QB doesn't need any explanation. Get a stop gap QB and then draft someone next year/the year after that.

Someone to change the pace and shoulder the load with Harrison.

WR is there, but I'm quite happy with what we have, honestly, assuming we keep Stallworth.

Mine are:
Glaring needs in order of importance
1) RT
2) # 1 or another # 2 WR (robo will be a slot WR) MoMass is a #2 imo (stallworth doesn't impress me even if we do keep him)
3) FS
4) Stud ILB

5.) #2 CB
6) SS
7a) RG
7b) TE to replace Royal
9) QB 2 years from now

Not bad.
Considering we have no QB,we must improve the running game, therefore a RT is a must.Hadnot was playing pretty good guard at the end,and the other 3 are set for awhile.
Next we need a bruiser at RB,to pair with Harrison.
No need to worry about WR,no one can get them the ball anyway.
On the D side,1 inside and 1 OLB.We need to get better at stopping the run.
2 new safties,man they're bad.
Another top flight corner.
I think we're set on the D-line,it's hard to say with all the injuries. It appered as tho the back-ups to the back-ups did ok.

You do realize we won one MORE game this year than last year right?
You do realize we got rid of Braylon and Kellen and (essentially) Jamal and STILL accomplished this right?

Your anti-Mangini bias is beyond old. Get over it already. Holmgren disagrees with you.

If Eric Berry slides to us at 7...You take him. If you can trade Quinn for a Kolb you do it, not that easy but somehow get it done. unfortunately, the chances of Philly trading McNabbs successor isn't likely. Heckert might know how they feel about their situation.. The worst we could do is get Hasselback a change of scenery and reinvent him here. Getting him would allow us to get this team built for his successor in 2 years..The other options are seeing if Weiss would overpay (draft Pick) to have him in his pocket in KC or we keep him and either use him as a backup or starter (sigh). I would draft a guy like Case Keenum later in the draft and develop him.

Cribbs is determined to get out of here..at least that's what his agents feel is best for them..errr I mean him. Is anyone desperate enough to give up a late first?? If so I say do it. I like Cribbs and the likelyhood of the guy we get in return will contribute as positively as Cribbs has is slim..Also the Chances of Cribbs keeping this up are slimmer and going to a team where special teams isn't as well coached and managed and keeping it up are even slimmer. I like Cribbs and would like him here and he deserves more money...but, he is not a receiver, he is not a RB and the wilcat is a gimmick offense and soon enough will be phased out or not as successful..(JMO) He is a great special teamer in every sense. Due to the history of KR/PR signing big deals and not producing, (Hall, Hester, Davis) plus the fact if our offense could move the ball 10 yards and our Defense continue to improve and the team as whole, his role and significance will diminish and not impact us in the same way. Most teams don't need Special teamers to be stars to be good..we did. Field position doesn't matter to Manning. Yeah, it's a luxury, but what good are leather seats in a car that won't start. I understand he is upset, but his timing and demeanor are to be desired. He is not thinking practical and there is not one person that has said he doesn't deserve more money..but he cut off the start of negotiations by alienating himself like that.(JMO)

IMO they're corner, safety, WR, QB, ILB, RT in no particular order.

OLB is a luxury right now. I'm more than comfortable with Matt Roth and Kamerion Wimbley getting after QB's in 2010. Wimbley FINALLY has his guy on the opposite side to draw attention.

I can't believe that others do not see TE as a major need. Moore was a nice pick up and just illustrated why the Browns were so inept without a legitimate TE.

You do realize we didn't score a RB or WR TD in 10+ games...that FACT alone should get any HC fired...I don't care what comes after this pathetic output, this is just a joke....this should be a NFL team not the training ground for coaches (be it HC or OC)

you do realize we were the 32nd (that's dead last) Offense in yds and yds/play (by a WORLD compared to the rest btw)

you do realize we were the 31st Defense in yds allowed and t30th in yds/play

How quick the homers forget...the last 4 games were essentially meaningless since we played dead teams...did we show more heart? you bet....but we aren't even more talented than those teams...folks, we even got CLEARLY outgained by OAK and KC in those games both in total yds and yds/play....we got lucky against KC that Cribbs had his career day....and against OAK we got big plays/TO going our way...we weren't even dominant against those bad teams

So we DID get rid of KW and BE...I know that....the problem is the ineptitude to replace their production....if what we got in return was "equal" value, than we should be improved somehow, somewhere, right? We aren'T though...so either their replacements are even worse or we didn't get "equal" value...I happen to think it's a bit of both

I know facts aren't welcome around here, especially since they "indicate" where we ARE compared to the rest of the league....but it is what it is

you guys overestimate our last 4 games....it's nothing new around here, it's homer's time again and it's ok....I just think you guys delude yourselves....MAngini didn't outcoach anyone down the stretch....his team is very easy to gameplan against on both sides of the ball and...to get back to the thread....we are heading into the offseason with more needs than last year which is unacceptable imho

Minimum, folks, MINIMUM.

I assume two starters at most from the draft, plus a possible couple more developmental guys. Plus maybe half that from FA.

That's three or four new, quality starters. I know we need more, but I have learned to lower my expectations.

Asking for 10-12 is just not likely to happen.

i think the want for a shutdown corner is so over hyped and over rated.

I'm almost wanting to say its the least important position on the field...

1) Safeties are a corners best friend.
2) Pass Rush are a corners best friend.

Django,

I don't think anyone believed we were trying to replace those players production. I think Mangini was and is trying to change the attitude and culture of this team. How did Tampa do? And do you think Braylon helped the Jets? No, both towns are already figuring out what we knew concerning their character. Nobody figured Robert Royal to be Winslow or Stuckey to be Edwards. As far as his other pickups, yeah they were parrallel for the most part, but he has a plan, believes in it and I believe he should get the chance to continue with it. You have to start somewhere, and nothing he did was as critical as getting guys that wanted to be here, want to play football, and don't pull against the grain and changing that locker room chemistry around. Now you can plug guys in, draft differently, approach free agency differently. I figure in year three this team will be competetive, and year four we should have a sound enough team to be more than a one and done playoff team. Of course this is only my opinion.

Number one: Safety.

Number two: Either tackle or cornerback.

Could we use other positions? Absolutely, but those are my top two/three DEFINTE must-haves.

Yes and no. You can never have too many good corners. Frees you up to bring the heat more by being able to put the corners in man coverage.

Hell, yesterday's Jets/Bengals game says it all...Lito Sheppard, Darrelle Revis and Dwight Lowery are 3 good corners (one of them a GREAT corner), allows for all sorts of defensive packages.

But safety is the most important defensive position.

I feel the teams needs are in this order:

1) RT
2) Safety
3 RG
4) dominant middle linebacker
5) Shut down corner
6) WR
7) Strong Safety
8) young DL

We may need to get a QB somewhere down the line but with all our other needs I do not think this is the year to worry about getting a quater back. once we have a good offensive line going and some talant to surround a quarter back then you look in to getting one. Then when you get the quarter back draft a good running back. I would get the running back last mainly due to most running backs only stay in the nfl for 4 to 6 years with the exception of your really good running backs. JMO

The trade for Braylon and KWII isn't even complete yet. They were traded for draft picks which we have yet to receive. Last year was another rebuilding year and it takes more than half a season to rebuild. Once his players began to understand the process they responded by winning the rest of their games. The process is working. At least Holmgren is smart enough to see progress.

1. I had no problems trading those 2...it's just what we did with the return value I have a problem with (Veikune + 5th this year for KW... ...doesn't look good)

2. Of course guys like Jennings, Ventrone, Costanzo, Trusnik, Benard etc "want" to be here...they are marginal at best NFL talents...they would lick Mangini's feet to stay in this league a couple of years...that's the problem I have with Mangini's "style"....Harrison just got a chance because Jamal went to IR...he had his worshipper Jennings over Harrison on the depth chart although it was evident to everyone that Harrison is clearly the better runner...I suspect something similar with Poteat-Francies

Your post was fair...you believe in his "plan"...and I'm ok with that...both the opinion AND EM's "plan"....I just think his execution is poor and I think he's a very poor gameday coach....I begged EM backers in the other thread to tell me what he does good in the coaching department...I still haven't received an attempt...I think it's more hope and winning streak delusion more than anything

One thing would be discipline...which had been sorely lacking for too long; the huge drop in stupid penalties.

Dj, might as well stop griping about it. You're stuck with him for another year. If next year starts out as bad as this one ... fire away.

Our minimum needs are in this order (assuming everyone already on the team returns):

Top 2 priorities should be:
*QB (would love to see Kolb or McNabb ... still can't believe people don't consider this a need and think the QBs are going to perform better with better talent ... these guys are bad folks ... very bad ... most important position on the team needs a serious upgrade)
*Safety (next closest to QB; an absolute must)

Remaining priorities:
*WR
*OLB
*ILB
*RG or RT (Womack quietly had a nice little run at RT late in the season)
*TE

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

One thing I heard from Schefter today, any team making the final eight teams in the playoff's, in an uncapped year can't sign any FA's unless they lose one. So the odds we can add some talent through FA's just went from 1 in 32 to 1 in 24. Unless a CBA is signed.

I actually make a lot of arguments, so I don't consider it bashing. I, like everyone on here, want the Browns to be good again but I happen to think we won't with EM and BQ....instead I get those kind of answers

Try arguing against it if you think otherwise....if not, just keep your sig up

Your perception of "equal" value is misguided. Getting rid of Brayon and KW with the savings in cap space and the shedding of two ME ME players would have been a good move with NOTHING in return. We got a bonus.

Yeah, he just trolls and trolls away about Mangini and whatever else he can pull out of his rear end to rip on. Only time I've ever used the mute button and I have to say, I don't regret it at all, especially each time he's quoted or replied to. Anyway... to the topic at hand...

I agree with you on this one. QB is the most significant need. I feel like I'm writing Quinn off a bit early here, but the inaccuracy (most crucial) and his performance even when the running game was working has me very skeptical about the guy. I could care less that he's a certain feminine hygiene product, he just looks bad. He may look like Peyton Manning before the snap, but when he drops back and actually throws the ball he looks more like Bart Simpson. The receiving corps and TE situation aren't optimal for success but I don't think that gives him a write-off for the year by any means. Better QB play is only going to help us and open up the running game for us. You cannot consistently move the ball on offense in football without a superior passing game. The QB is the primary catalyst in improving that. I don't care how, who, from where, or why we fix that position but it is the most important and needs to start being addressed this off-season.

Safety: We need an impact player at safety. I won't elaborate on it as this has been run to the ground, but look at the impact that is made at the position.

RT is a most obvious position in need of upgrading. It won't be difficult to improve it. Be it draft or FA (not sure who's available) I would guarentee that St. Turnstile is not starting at RT next year or else I'll change my name to CoachB3.

Then in no particular order...

ILB: We need a big hammer next to DQ so we can use his abilities better (in coverage). It's almost like upgrading 2 positions at once if we do that.

OLB: Replace Wimbley and get a solid pass rusher on the opposite side of Roth. That guy's a keeper. I know Grossi said Wimbley is "indestructible" and all but for all of us in Realityville we know we need someone better against the run and capable of getting to the QB (which might entail more moves than the simple dip move he's run into the ground).

Bruising/short yardage RB. I think Harrison would be most effective getting around 12-15 quality touches in a game in space that being a feature back. I want the primary back to be a tough, physical runner who I can trust to block.

TE: I say continue to see what we have in Moore (he showed real solid hands), a bulldozer, and a late round draft pick and that'll be our depth chart there going into next year. This one's on the bottom of the totem pole.

That's a lot of needs that we have to take care of. Not happening in one off-season I don't think.

Since when did KW become a ME ME player? Another one of those board myths...he wasn't the sharpest knife in the kitchen but he always played hard and was a shut up team player on gameday

I wouldn't mind Harrison being the feature back and pairing him with a bruiser to help spell him a bit - maybe even Vickers ... not sure why he isn't getting any carries at all. After the final quarter of the season, I'm not sure why people wouldn't want to see more of what we saw with Harrison. I can understand if he had all those carries and regressed as the game went on, but he didn't. Everyone keeps throwing out 12-15 carries when he was absolutely dominant getting 25+.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Yeah, he just trolls and trolls away about Mangini and whatever else he can pull out of his rear end to rip on.

Hey Josh, maybe you get to read this...thanks for the mute-compliment btw because it means you just can't get past my post without reading it, like the ones from random homers...somewhat like a shocker movie scene, lol...you don't wanna look at it but you just have to

Aynway, you seem to be a Mangini backer and obviously dislike my take on his coaching abilities...so you seem like the perfect guy to take on my challenge in the Mangini thread to write something positive about his coaching style that resulted in the worst Offense and 2nd worst D in the league....you got a big mouth and stuff too, so get over there and let me know

Here's a recap to you right now......

nothing (in the actual thread)

then someone mentioned discipline (in another thread though)

so the full recap is:

- nothing positive
- more discipline (less penalties...)
- media wasn't nice to him (added this one myself, homers love those conspiracy theories)

I'm sure you can add to his PRO list

GO Josh

Teams threw all over us, We need a CB and safety first then
RT
DL so Rogers can play on the ends
QB so we can score a TD
WR who can get open and catch
OLB we don't have a backup thats any good.
OL for backing up LT or LG

i think the want for a shutdown corner is so over hyped and over rated.

I'm almost wanting to say its the least important position on the field...

1) Safeties are a corners best friend.
2) Pass Rush are a corners best friend.

We have to fix the line while correcting a defense that continually ranks towards the bottom of the barrel each year. I'm confident with who we have at RB this year and I hope we pick up a vet QB to fill the hole while we rebuild. I think this years WR will do for now while we attempt to build a running offense. Momass did alright and Robo will still develop.
