Rob Ryan would like to coach the Raiders Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 15, 2010 10:28 AM ET Is the NFL ready for another Ryan as head coach? Rob Ryan hopes so, and he made it clear that he hopes to be considered for the Raiders job if Tom Cable is let go. "Hell, yeah, I'd have interest," Ryan told USA Today. "I haven't talked to Mr. Davis because he has a coach. Let's see what happens." The Browns defensive coordinator doesn't lack for confidence. No surprise there. "I will be a head coach in this league, and I will be damn successful, too. . . . There are a lot of good coaches out there, but there are only so many Ryans." The words are a small surprise because Ryan seemed eager to leave Oakland a year ago. But he reportedly didn't burn any bridges and even had kind words for JaMarcus Russell a few weeks back. He must really want that job. web page

I'd like him to be our defensive coach for a few more years but you can't keep a guy from moving up in the world. I hope he stays with us this year.

Hey, I liked that our defense was aggressive, and I'd like to see him stay.
But you can't blame the guy if he can get a promotion.

Hmmm. Okay, what DC's are out there in case Davis reads this? I'm sure Holmgren knows a few he would trust.

It better be a darn good promotion if he'd be working for Al Davis.

I want the guy to stay, too. But I'd wish him well if he left. I would trust the new brass to find the right replacement.

Ok..if Ryan can get a HC job, more power to him.
If he leaves, MH could put Mangini in charge as the HC/DC.
Then MH hires an assistant HC from the OC pool of coordinators involved in the playoffs or anyone he's comfortable with...and that coach would be in charge of the offense as assit. HC/OC...
That solves everything...we "fixed it"..

vadawg...first, welcome to the board..
second...Ray Rhodes is a defensive guy...
My idea is based on the fact that Mangini's experience is on the defensive side and it would be an easy move for him to take over the DC duties as well as remain the HC.
Then, the Browns could hire someone like Jason Garrett, the present OC of the Cowboys and promote him to assist. head coach, working with Daboll on the offensive side of the ball.
Just an idea that comes to mind to fill the opening created should Ryan leave.

I thought the Cowboys upgraded him a couple years ago to Ass Head Coach

I understand his desire to be a head coach.. personally without an opening in Oakland, and since he has a job here.. he should be a little less emphatic about wanting to leave.. that's JMHO...
But why would anybody want to go to the Raiders? That's like where coaches and players go to die... I like Ryan, I'm sure his image fits well with the Raider nation mentality and all.. but really, what are his chances of success there? Extremely slim.

DC...while this may be your opinion of what Ryan should do and how he should act...Ryan already let the NFL know, he believes he's ready to be a HC.
Obviously, Ryan does not share your opinion...
On the issue of there being no opening in Oakland yet...maybe Ryan has some inside info.
While some may feel Ryan is not ready to be a HC in Oakland..remember who he's trying to convince...Al Davis...considering that fact, anything is possible..even Rob Ryan and Al Davis tying the knot.

I would hope that Holmgren would allow Mangini to pick that coach. If we are running a 3-4 (which we retained the staff, so we should be), then adding a 4-3 DC would not help us much (the DCs Holmgren has worked with).
as for who we might consider....it might not be popular since he would be a 1st time DC in the NFL (was DC for Arkansas in college), but I really like this guy Dallas has as their LB coach:

But hey,, keep the door open cause with Al Davis you just never know.. Ryan could be asking for his old job back by November...... LOL

If this were to happen, does this open the door for us to go back to a 4-3 defense?

If you believe that MH is genuine and a "striaight shooter" as he himself claims to be, then you can expect EM to pick his own coaches.
As far as the rest,..should we expect anything less as Browns fans? I understand Ryans desire to be a HC,..but man, is it OK if we can enjoy at least a little success for just a little while?
I know,..in our case it isn't really success(God forbid) just some happiness in our hope right now.

I'm pretty sure Holmgren gave Mangini final say over the coaching staff. So when it comes to the defensive coordinator, it doesn't really matter who Holmgren knows.

I thought Davis had forced the 4-3 on Ryan and that was a big bone of contention with Rob. I don't know, it's a HC job but you know how much interference and BS you're gonna have to endure right off the top!
Wonder if everything has been cool between RR and EM. Seems that had many heated discussions on the sidelines during the year.

Oakland is a mess and Rob Ryan didnt get along with Al Davis to begin with. Remeber Ryan was fired. Not sure why he would want to go there, esp with Al Davis making him run the 4-3 his last 2 seasons there. Doesnt add up to me. Doubt he gets consideration.

You know, I like the guy, he's entertaining to me.
But in just reading this comment that he made (and assuming for right now that he's serious and not just joking around) about there only being so many Ryans, etc., it makes me think the guy is an arrogant jerk. It just rubs me the wrong way.
Like his brother Rex, who I also think is an arrogant jerk, says things in the media about how he believes the Jets should be favored in the playoffs, so here comes Rob to say that he'll be a great coach, yadda yadda.
Like I said, just rubbed me the wrong way. But, if he stays with us and is successful, I'll take his arrogance every day of the week.

Some people are arrogant. No doubt. There ARE, however, some people that don't see the need or feel the need to speak in politically correct terms.
I don't much care for arrogant people. I do, however, like and respect people that say "screw p.c. - this is what I think and feel, and if it bothers you - YOU have the problem, not me". (and I don't mean you as in "you, brownsfan" - just in general)

Here's a name . . . . http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10015/1028525-100.stmSteelers linebackers coach turns down Miami offer Friday, January 15, 2010 By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Linebackers coach Keith Butler has turned down the Miami Dolphins' offer to become their defensive coordinator and will remain with the Steelers, the Post-Gazette has learned. Butler, 52, who has been with the Steelers for seven seasons, worked for two years in Cleveland with Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano (1999-2000). He is considered to be the person who will become the Steelers defensive coordinator whenever Dick LeBeau retires. More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

IIRC, "Assistant Head Coach" .. or "Associate Head Coach" ..... or anything other iteration of Head Coach with any preface to it is not considered a promotion from coordinator, and thus a coordinator could not leave to become anything other than just plain Head Coach without his current team's permission.

I doubt the guy would go to Cleveland if he turned down Miami.
Anyway, I think it is highly unlikely Ryan will get the job in Oakland. If they fire Cable it means they want to give JaMarcus Russell another shot. And that means they will probably bring in an offensive minded coach who could help out Russell (if that's possible.)
My guess is Jim Fassel.

Yeah, I guess Al Davis calls Dennis Green every time he has a head coach opening. And every time Dennis Green turns him down.

Great,, we finally take the weight off his shoulders and you want to put more on
I know what your saying, you want to take some of the HC responsibility off his shoulders and place them on a Garrett (or someone like that)
I'm not guessing anything like that is in the cards...

YTown...I didn't know that...
Rob Chudzinski is listed as Assistant Head Coach/Tight Ends for the Chargers. What does the rule say about Chud's situation?
I assume the Chargers added the position of Assist. HC/TE to get around the fact that he was a OC for the Browns and the Chargers already had an OC.
How did the Chargers get around the rule as you interpret it?

I agree. Holmgren has already said Mangini get to hire his own coaches.
Also, forget the hiring of a asst HC in charge of Offense.
Just like Holmgren has the final say on the big picture, you need that in the coaching staff as well...1 head coach. Not 1 guy over defense and 1 over offense and nobody over both.
And forget Holmgren....he has already said he isn't the coach. Eric Mangini is the coach.
Plus, we already have an asst head coach in Brad Seeley...the ST coordinator.
If we need a DC....Mangini will make his pick.
He might solicit a few names off one of the lists Holmgren has kept, but in the end it will have to be his decision.
I didn't see anything in Seeley's background that shows he is really a defensive guy to make him a candidate...was mostly a O-line coach in college before being a ST coord in the NFL....probably why we have some pretty good blocking schemes on kick returns.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

FWIW, Bob Sutton, the defensive coordinator under Mangini in New York, is still in New York as a Defensive Assistant/Linebackers Coach. So, in short, he would be available.
