Hi there,
Ok think we are clearly seeing signs that Mike Holmgren will coach again for the Browns and I'd say by the second half of next year.
1) - When Mike didn't fire the Coaching Staff was a very clear sign. He doesn't want any drama or excuses when he puts Mangini's head on the chopping block!
* IF he really wanted to "fix" the team he would have fired every coach on the Offensive side of the ball! Keeping the whole coaching staff in tacked, tells me he will fire Mangini and his whole staff when we get off to an average/bad start next year!
2) - Hiring the front office guy from Miami Brian Wiedmeier who I keep hearing that he is a top guy!
* So when Mangini is fired next year, Holmgren is setting up his front office with guys who can do the major jobs so he can focus on Coaching.
* What really does Holmgrin have to do during the season? Nothing.. He has a GM, he has front office guys with 26 years experience... why not coach!
#1 Is keeping Magini's Staff - tells the signs that Eric has a short rope to hang himself with. IF Holmgren changed the offense around under Mangini... then people in the media/public would give him excuses of learning a new offense/ new coaches, etc... Keeping the same coaches - it tells us as soon as we look awful next year like maybe whenever the Bye Week is... They are all out!

Holmgren didn't keep Mangini's offensive staff. Mangini kept Mangini's offensive staff.
If we are to believe Holmgren is the guy who's going to turn this team around then we should probably believe him when he says Mangini has his full support.

i am gonna go ahead and second this.
i really love all these theories.
how about this one?
maybeeee, just maybe, mike holmgren thinks mangini can coach! GAH! unbelievable!
in all seriousness, i like the possible mix we could have of the belicheck/holmgren style of coaching. i think holmgren should have the say on offensive talent, but with defense, maybe he lets mangini have a little more input.
we ended the year on a 4 game win streak, the first of such in forever. and 2 of those teams were playoff contenders who needed those wins.
but it was the style that i loved. the type of play you need to win in the conditions. tough defense, tough running game, and basically coming out of the tunnel ready to go. none of this give up an early lead and make a comeback every other week like in 2007.
i really honestly believe holmgren is giving mangini another chance. not he's giving himself an excuse for next year, or prepping himself for the job. i really honestly believe he thinks he may have his coach already.

First of all, welcome to the board DK.
Admittedly, you've got a bit of a conspiracy theory going on but I'll try to smooth your way in through your first posts and give you some counterpoints.
Why didn't he fire coaches? Holmgren was brought in to turn the Browns around. After meeting with Mangini, he decided to give him another chance. Once Mangini was confirmed in, he would have had input on the fate of the other coaches. I do agree on Daboll though....horrible. Hope he improves.
I think Holmgren realizes the need for a little continuity. The win streak showed progress which is all that could be asked for considering the state of the team.
As for your second points, of course he brought in top people. You think he's going to hire recent university grads for senior executive positions? His job is to turn the Browns into a winning organization....and it takes alot of people to do that.
I wouldn't rule out Holmgren wanting to coach again at some point but right now, I have no doubt that he is our "czar" and thats it/

I might be the only person on this board, maybe in America besides Holmgren and Mangini, that thinks Daboll deserves another shot. Yeah, he was putrid through most of the season, but he really started to mix it up, and showed some good ingenuity down the stretch. He was as much of an integral part of the run as the defense was. He made sure to get the ball in Cribbs' hands.
Don't get me wrong, there is much room for improvement, but with real qb play, and the emergence of Harrison, and solidifying the right side of the line...he might turn out to be ok.

it's amazing what happens when you can actually run the ball.
i don't blame daboll as much as i blame our inability to run the ball early on, as well as bad to mediocre play at qb
i'm ok with daboll getting another chance. we'll know more about our coaching staff, and qb at this point next year, it'll be a lot easier to make the decision to let go or keep them, as well as quinn.
i think DA is gone after this year.

I bet if we took a poll on this board, it would be at least close to 50-50.
First time coordinator, struggled in the beginning of the season but look what he had to work with............ And it was his first time calling the plays, which he got better at as the season went on. Like that final game against the Jaguars where we just stopped letting Anderson throw the ball after the interception. Genius!
He deserves another chance in my book as well.

I agree. I don't think Mangini would have kept him if he was as bad as a lot of people here think. He had no trouble getting rid of another friend who didn't cut the mustard. I'd like to see what he can do with a qb that can actually get a ball to a receiver.

Well 2008 was a huge dissapointment on offense compared to 2007, and we had a regime change. I'm sure that Mangini felt more comfortable with his own guy at OC who understood his values and his type of football.
I mean, it isn't like Chud wowed us last year.......... And that's what happens when new coaches come in, the previous coaches get fired. Besides, sometimes guys just don't mesh well. I mean why would McDaniels let go of Nolan, it isn't like the guy's got a bad track record either. Sure the team limped to the finish line this year, but it wasn't like the Broncos were expected to be that great anyway.

Yeah, because the whole coaching staff typically gets fired mid-season. So one guy can coach the whole team and pick guys off the street in a matter of a few days, throw together a playbook and some philosophies, and kick ass the rest of the way.

Your're not. DK may be on to something. In training camp, I could see MH standing very close to the QB's... whoever they are.
