I finally got around to installing Ubuntu 9.10 using wubi. Everything appears to be in order and I plan to do a true dual boot the next time I do a clean install.

I'm certainly impressed with this free OS as I am becoming more accustomed to it's functions. I managed to get the cube running last night and I expect to make that a productive tool as I move along. After googling for a dock that would work I ended up installing AWN, but I had to use Terminal to get it work and it only works when Terminal is open. I need to continue to experiment. Does anyone prefer a different dock in Ubuntu? I'm open for recommendations, but keep in mind I am technically limited and do not want to compile it myself.

This Ubuntu install is running virtually on my old Dell with a 2.4 Ghz processor and just a gig of RAM. All in all it doesn't appear to be a huge resource hog even with Compiz and multiple workspaces running. My next venture is to run WINE and see if I can get a few games running. I also want to explore the possibilities / limitations to using Ubuntu as a multimedia machine.

I've used linux for about 15 years and Ubuntu is my fav distro. That an linux mint, but i am running karmic koala, i use the awn bar also, here is a good tutorial Link as far as wine, I use World of Warcraft using wine just fine, so you can get some decent games. Plus there are some pretty good linux games out there also. As far as multimedia machine, i run Cad, web design, video editing, and sound mixing apps all on my laptop with no issues. For something cool check out Linux MCE LINK

leadtheway.....Thanks for the links. They both look very helpful. I am quickly adding Linux / Ubuntu bookmarks to Firefox.

After installing AWN it didn't appear like I thought it would and then I read that I had to run it once. At that point I attempted to do so from "System", but to no avail. As mentioned, I did get it running with Terminal, but if I closed Terminal, AWN went with it. I did all this after installing the Compizconfig tool which assured there was an active composite manager (perhaps this was already done since Compiz is bundled with Ubuntu 9.10?). At this point I plan to uninstall it and use your link to see if I can get it to run without need for Terminal. I probably misstepped the first time through.

The Linux MCE looks very, very interesting. I have plans to build a quad core into the cabinet that my plasma sets on and MCE may be just, or at least nearly, what I'm looking for. Ultimately I want to be able to store and watch DVDs on a large hard drive (decrypted ISOs from DVDs that I own), view on line vid and tenyardtorrent content and play PC based games (even Farmville...lmao). Even if MCE isn't for me I do think that Ubuntu is promising.. Man, I love open source.

Tux....Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give AWN another go first, but I expect I'll try several to see which I like best.

I do have a few more questions (and probably more later although I do actually try to RTFM....well, sort of )......

As mentioned before I installed this using wubi which creates a virtual install...right?

Given that, I have not installed a Linux based ATI driver for my old AIW card so does that mean that the eye candy works via Windows where the vendor's driver is installed?

Along the same line......I was very pleased that my entire home network (all Window OS's) was recognized by this Ubuntu install. Is that also because of running it virtually or do the current Ubuntu versions automate this process. I hope so since that would make a true boot install simpler!
