Kerry Rhodes and Lito Sheppard are likely to be released by the Jets based on these two sources:

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/end_of_the_rhodes_dqlDnjJkR0BIXKfCf0ftoM

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/01/five_things_on_the_ny_jets_to-.html

Is anyone interested in either of these players since we definitely need our secondary upgraded?

I am intrigued by Rhodes. Admittedly, I haven't followed him that much, but his problems seem to be correctable, more of a need of a change of scenery. Some evidence for this is his better play at the end of the season. I guess one potential problem is I don't know about is his relationship with Mangini.

As far as Sheppard, I know he had good years in the past and he seemed to be having a good year this year, but I'm still bewildered as to why he got benched by Ryan for the playoffs.

I'm interested in both, but moreso Rhodes as I don't think we'll have as many opportunities to upgrade our safeties as I'm pretty sure Eric Berry will be gone by the time we draft.

IIRC, and even if I do this may mean nothing, but I think Rhodes was somewhat negative in his comments on Mangini. That may rule him out.

But I could be wrong.

We do need to upgrade the safety postion, major. It was better last year than before, but still needs improvement.

Wasn't Lito drafted by Heckert? Could be a possibility.

and traded away.....Lito was terrible for the Jets this year.

always a possibility for the backend CB job, but I wouldn't plan on him being more than that.

This.

He was on the field most of the time when they had "the best defense in the league"....so Ryan benches him and the Colts light them up. Would the Colts light them up with him in there, probably. But we will never know if Lito could have made a play considering the two guys that replaced him were very young.

With that being said, I don't think I'd want him.

Does this have any impact on our BE trade? Didn't our 2nd/3rd pick hinge on what they sent back to Philly (and that deal was based on if the Jets resigned him for 2010)?

Rhodes: yes, I'd be interested.

Sheppard: not so much, after seeing him get torched by Pierre Garcon. Too old, slowing down, too expensive.

There are rumblings of the team parting ways with safety Kerry Rhodes, cornerback Lito Sheppard, linebacker Vernon Gholston and running back Thomas Jones.

web page

I find Thomas Jones a little suprising.

i agree....even with his age, I would assume they could garner something in trade value for him. he's been productive these past 2 seasons.

that's easy to say when there is a better alternative.. If the best players available to us either via draft, FA or Trade are these two guys, and you feel as if either or both are upgrades, doesn't it make sense to jump on them?

I agree, not saying we shouldnt look, just seems like many get all excited over other teams cast-off and than when they dont perform here, get all up set becuase they cant cover a reciever or tackle a ball carrier, or cant catch, just wanted to......actually just wanted to squash peoples dreams.....LOL

LOL If I respectfully call you a meathead, will I get banned?

I actually do know what you were saying.. and it's not that you are wrong when you say we've gotten other teams castoffs.. But in some cases, it's worked out..

Costanzo, Roth, Jamal Lewis (for a couple of years anyway), Furrey (what a life saver he turned out to be huh?) Phil Dawson back in 1999 and Mike Adams.

You might want to put Eric Stienbach and Hank Fraley in that mix as well..

So while we have some that haven't worked out, we have a few that have.. It's just like the draft,, a crapshoot...

I wouldn't be surprised if we signed Rhodes and maybe Thomas Jones (change of pace to Harrison).

I've been saying we could be signing Rhodes for awhile. This would allow us to draft Joe Haden out of Florida, and we'd have a much better defense. We could go OLB or RT in round 2.

Rhodes had a bad year this year, but overall he's been a good player. Sometimes a switch of team can be good for a guy, and Rhodes is still young.

As for Shepperd, plenty of guys have been burnt by Garcon (Garson?) this season. The guy's gonna be good (Pierre). Shepperd could definitely come in and be our number 2 or number 3. He's definitely better than McDonald and Poteet and Mike Adams. The Jets D played a lot better this season when he got comfortable and emerged to be a better player, i don't know why Strickland and the other guy got so much Playing Time
